Despite it being during a time where the blue color filter was starting to be overdone on every horror film, this one generally avoids that, though it is often grey and like it's always cloudy or nighttime but that's not as bad as blueing out the whole film. I looked into its background and it appears it was a victim of bad timing, was supposed to be released in theaters but the parent company got bought out and new one axed that and sent it direct to DVD. It's like a mix of witch films, Suspiria, and Evil Dead but not heavy on the gore. Now for negatives. First, I'm a huge fan of Bruce Campbell but his character in this seemed like a comic relief at times and I am not sure why they did that. It did not fit with the rest of the film. Second, the audio was often off. Sometimes you could barely hear what they were saying without cranking the volume up, which is annoying when the witches are trying to explain things. Third, the relationship with the bully and the main character went from one extreme to another and didn't make sense. If she was fake bullying from the beginning and really wanted to tell her the secret as she later claimed, she missed a ton of opportunities for that. Fourth, what the whole witch and woods thing was all about nor how the main character is so important in that is never 100% clear. I think they just went with the angle it is supposed to be mysterious and getting too detailed about it may make it sound more ridiculous. Major spoiler alert here, but I think the girls who were taken out in the film were supposedly special ones who had some special powers like the witches did and could hear what they could, while the rest were just some sort of sacrificial normies that they wanted to offer to "the woods" but for some reason they wanted to force those 3 girls to work on their behalf against their will. The main character had a stronger rebellious will the the first 2 but eventually was weakened. Expand

If you have the patience to watch The Woods then there is a lot to gain. This is not your usual witch affair and contains slow boiling intrigue and great storytelling. This is not your usual witch affair and contains slow boiling intrigue and great storytelling. The pace is a bit too slow and there is too much emphasis on thriller rather than suspense for my taste. Still a very good psychological film for the patient among us. Expand
