His career however looks like it might save him as tries desperately to become a national weather man. Overall very uplifting and it might have changed the way I view the world. Do not watch for light entertainment. This movie may answer the question of the meaning of life.… Expand

Such a good movie, Cage is at his best in these kind of roles. I think he would be viewed very differently today if he stayed away from the blockbusters.

Recently noticed that this was one of the top streaming selections on Netflix -- seven years after it came out. So I think my sense that this would be a sleeper has been vindicated. So I think my sense that this would be a sleeper has been vindicated. After four viewings it is still laugh out loud funny, largely because of the usual passion Cage brings to the part. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the movie is that Spritz, bedeviled by his sense of mediocrity, is actually the least complacent character in a sea of dreary mediocrities. (Pulitzer Prize? Please. Does his estranged wife with the big sad house write sci-fi novels? What about her new blob of a suitor?) I think Ebert had it right -- this is a film about a person who thinks that the standard American measures of success are bunk. But he can't escape from the shadow of his menacing father, who, to his credit, admits in the final scenes that his "like a rock" life hasn't been worth as much as his son thinks it might have.

The film has its false notes -- the creepy counselor scenes and the whole "camel toe" excursion -- but on the whole there's something transcendent about it.… Expand

Hyper realistic with great and relatable characters, the film really hits home quite often. Nicolas Cage, Hope Davis, and Michael Caine, are all great in their respective roles and, much like the film itself, bring a human quality to their characters. The writing is also very good and the direction from Gore Verbinski is solid, all winding up with a top-notch character study. However, what truly hurts this one, is the main character. Though realistic and relatable, he is entirely too easy to hate to the point that when things go well for him, we do not care. When things go poorly, we feel he deserves it. This may be the point, but it makes it tough to enjoy a film when you hate the protagonist. Honestly, serial killer and mob movies have more likable people as the protagonists than this one. Despite this, as I said, The Weather Man is decidedly average on a wholistic level, but does bring a lot of quality to the table and was quite an easy watch and never drifted into boredom territory, in large part thanks to its honest and realistic approach to its characters.… Expand

A while back, I remember catching a bit of this on TV, being really captivated by the use of narration and the lead performance, and then never getting around to finishing it. It's remained on my watchlist until this very day. It's remained on my watchlist until this very day. And as far as I can tell, my first impressions of the movie weren't exactly too far off from my more thorough thoughts on it now. As a showcase of narrative voice and tone alone, "The Weather Man" is definitely worth a look, featuring a refreshingly acerbic take on life, death, work, love, and the human condition. And though some of that sardonicism can get a bit too esoteric at times for my tastes, I found this to be a pretty vibrant effort from writer Steven Conrad overall. Director Gore Verbinski also manages brilliantly, somehow making the familiarly desolate winter landscapes of the Chicagoland area palatable to the eye. And Nicolas Cage is in top form, proving once again that there really, truly is a gifted actor underneath all of the goofiness he's showcased in some of his more recent entries as a performer. All in all, I'm glad I revisited this. It's a successful dramedy on the whole. Even if it does tend to veer a little too far into the weeds here and there.… Expand

The Weather Man is a plot driven comic drama about a dysfunctional family and the dysfunctional protagonist that attempts to make things better. Yes, it is hilarious. And none of the sketchy sequences are forcibly imputed they blend in aptly with the storytelling and lightens things down. But the rest of it relies upon emotional drama that unfortunately fails to communicate where the performance isn't on trial but its familiar structure, cliched screenplay and typical quirky characters. The chemistry between Cage and her daughter doesn't go as anticipated (don't get it wrong, it's good, it's sweet) in fact if anything that bounces back in, it's the relationship between Caine and Cage that works on merit of performance and nothing else. The background score is almost non-existent, cinematography is daft along with editing and camera work that only is successful on offering the palpable cold environment to the audience. What it aces on, is the weaving of all the bickerings among characters that is done with such nuance that it draws out laughs easily from you. Cage's thoughts are also real gem as they are more practical, and resembles a lot with the audience as it fiddles with mutual things a lot. Cage's portrayal is subtle and complex to the core and gets a decent support from Caine's sane character whilst Davis fails to live up to it. The primary reason why it doesn't work, is its solution to all the issues that were piled upon, they aren't executed cinematically by Verbinski for it to offer the anticipated glorifying experience. Few hilarious gags, the flamboyant screenplay and Cage's emotionally attached to this bubble are the high points of the feature. The Weather Man is a feature you wouldn't want to explore and frankly will neither remember after leaving the screen.… Expand

This surprisingly acerbic film is a little suggestive of what Todd Solondz would do if he went mainstream. Director Gore Verbinski should be commended for not casting out the naughty words as a means of securing that PG-13 rating. "The Weather Man" makes better use of the "f"-word than any studio film in recent memory. What should be mentioned foremost about this very caustic movie is that it's a savage indictment against our culture. David(Nicolas Cage) describes his job as being akin to fast food, and yet it's he, and not the father, who is arguably the success in the family, because nobody recognizes Robert Spritz(Michael Caine), the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Caine is absolutely brilliant as a writer who's not stereotypically a brusque, egomaniacal monster to his loved ones. He's the first person to recognize that Shelly(Gemmenne de la Pena) isn't happy. The artist is almost never the most humane person in a film. In a wonderful scene, David takes Shelly shopping and improves her life by dressing the girl in clothes that's not self-defeating, and this is all stems from Robert taking an interest in his granddaughter's life. This is Michael Caine's best performance. As for Nicholas Cage, we might finally have him back from his post-"Leaving Las Vegas" period.… Expand

Similar in nature to "Punch-Drunk Love" with Adam Sandler, except that PDL was a good movie. Depressing, tedious, dark, plotless, and a waste of time...The only bright points were Michael Caine and a few chuckles.

Totally underrated and often laugh-out-loud funny. Both this film and Lord of War inexplicably got buried by critics and audiences. Nicolas Cage must have run over a nun last fall to warrant this kind of karma.

I've thought about it for a little while afterwards, and the more I thought, the more disgusted I got. This is a pseudo art-film with an unbelievably obtuse lead who is more antagonist (to himself and to reality) than protagonist. The offbeat attempts at humor/angst are merely offbeat. Furthermore, nobody could conceivably be as dense as this character in his personal relationships be this a fast-food, shallow culture or no. Sell anxiety ridden someplace else. This movie is nothing but a vehicle for blatant advertising of fast food. The ads are totally distracting from the otherwise plausible acting. I do not recommend this movie.

I hate it when movies advertise for companies. We pay for entertainment not advertisements. Another flaw is the movie seemed to draw on towards the end and did not succintly make a profound point. There were functional points to be made such as being present and accepting yourself for who you are but these points don't seem that profound to me any more, just plain common sense. On the up side the movie was well acted. honorable mention to Michael Caine. The movie seemed to have a realism about it which was not ment to be a downer but more so to show something and learn from it. There were truly some funny moments that most males can relate to. In short it well worth seeing, but do not expect perfection.… Expand

Very well done. Not a true comedy, but a true black comedy. I think the movie reflects how people really think and act. Nixolas Cage is brilliant as is the directing and the cinematography. Highly recommended.

Nobody but Nicholas Cage could pull off making such a neurotic, selfish, unsympathetic character such as Dave Spritz embarrassingly likable. He is perfect in the part. Excellent movie. A great black comedy and character study. Occasionally depressing but it pays off in the end. Nicholas Cage is wonderful in his role. It reminded me a lot of Alexander Payne's 'About Schmidt', so if you liked Excellent movie. A great black comedy and character study. Occasionally depressing but it pays off in the end. I was very impressed with this movie. I went in pretty ho-hum about even watching it but I'm glad I did. The characters, acting and cinematography were great (Chicago looks fantastic). But the raw-life story unfolding is the centerpiece. The main character's journey figuring out who he is, seems kind of like a common theme in movies (identity crisis) but this story was still pretty unique and quite raw. Props to the writer-- and I highly recommend this movie.… Expand

If you and I had been sitting in a bar a year ago, and you had tried to tell me that the director of Pirates of the Caribbean and Mouse Hunt's next project was going to be a character study that resembled the witty but somewhat downbeat If you and I had been sitting in a bar a year ago, and you had tried to tell me that the director of Pirates of the Caribbean and Mouse Hunt's next project was going to be a character study that resembled the witty but somewhat downbeat work of Alexander Payne (About Schmidt, Sideways), my immediate response would've been to ask the bartender to cut you off. Gore Verbinski deserves all the credit in the world for using his commercial clout to make this literate, challenging account of a highly self-absorbed individual in a midlife crisis (some might say "middle-age meltdown") who seems completely incapable of maintaining a satisfactory, mutually nurturing relationship with his ex-wife, his kids, his dying father, or anyone else; at its best, Steve Conrad's screenplay is reminiscent not only of such character- rather than plot-driven early 1970s films, such as Five Easy Pieces, that seriously questioned the meaning of success in America, but also some of the similarly-themed short stories of John Cheever and John Updike. (Those moviegoers who address the fact that Dave Spritzel is a professional local TV weatherman who makes $240,000 a year with statements like, "Well, gee, if I brought home HIS paycheck, I'd be glad to have some of his unhappiness!" are not only missing the point entirely, but either never read Edwin Arlington Robinson's classic poem "Richard Cory", about a wealthy pillar of the community for whom financial success wasn't enough, or completely forgot that they had.) The movie, photographed by Payne favorite Phedon Papamichael to make the city of Chicago where Spritzel works look like its weather consists 100% of clouds, rain and slush, is darkly funny and insightful most of the way; I thought the best scenes involved Spritzel's two adolescents, who are both dealing with serious growing pains but prove to be far more resilient and "adult" than their father. (Overweight daughter Shelly's naively optimistic interpretation of a derogatory nickname given her by her classmates is a real heart-tugger.) Many audience members will find the heart of the movie to be in the faltering relationship between Dave and his dad Robert (a pitch-perfect Michael Caine), whose disapproval of everything Dave does is especially agonizing to Dave because Robert NEVER RAISES HIS VOICE. As for Nicolas Cage as Spritzel, nobody does hangdog better; if someone gets the incredibly misguided notion of making a live-action movie about Charles Schulz's Peanuts gang in their 40s, here's the perfect Charlie Brown. The Weather Man is so good when it's good, and it's so good much of the time, that it's even more frustrating when it's less so, especially since most of the flaws could've been corrected with maybe another rewrite or two: Dave's mother is a virtual nonentity; the film uses the comic device of having the last person in the world that you want to see or hear you doing or saying something embarrassing show up at just the time you're doing or saying it occurs about half a dozen times too often to keep being effective; wouldn't even a schlump like Dave keep a Visa or ATM card in his wallet--and what big US city in 2005 has convenience stores that allow 12-year-olds to purchase cigarettes? Then again, maybe the movie is its own object lesson in style as well as substance: namely, life is what it is, so learn to live with it.… Expand

The constant advertising for every fast food restaurant didn't bother me as much as others because of a certain line in the movie. It really stuck with me on the ride home; there were many great quotes that were seriously laugh out loud funny. Go see this movie.… Expand
