Ryan Reynolds is actually very enjoyable in this film and easy to watch and the other cast member play their roles fine too. The film does seem to slow a bit getting towards the end and may have a few rough edges at time but it is a nice unique and more comedic take on something similar to American Psycho.
The personification of the animals are also great and make a nice contrast of the Id and super ego fighting between itself, it shows in a comedic and visual way the psychological battle going on inside a psychopath’s head as he slowly bends toward the Id.
I would say this film is well worth a check out. It may not be the best film ever and may have a few slip ups at times but it is quite an easy watch, despite all the blood and dismemberment. A nice unique and slightly thought provoking dark comedy. Also, the ending is extremely bizarre but I can kind of understand what they were doing with it.

If WTF kind of black comedies it is you are after you will not go wrong with 'The Voices' which if it weren't for the slightly deflated ending it would have been a brilliant film. Reynolds and the cat are both absolutely amazing.

Ryan Reynolds is excellent as the loner looking for love in a small town who has a nasty habit of killing people, aided by the voices in his head, which he hears coming from his pets, while Kendrick and Arterton seem to be having a blast. The film really comes into its own in the final stretch as we see the life Reynolds has really been living instead of through his drug tinted spectacles, and its in these claustrophobic, disturbing scenes that we see the tone the film maybe should have taken throughout. This isn't a bad movie, wasn't what I was expecting at all and was thrilled with the results. The concept of shifting realities based on perspective was pretty good and made for some interesting designs.

Ryan Reynolds is a terrific actor, and Jerry in "The Voices" might be his best performance yet. Wonderfully weird and psychologically twisted, "The Voices" is a mix between "Filth" and "Donnie Darko" with its own personality. A must-watch.

Who every thought that a movie starring Ryan Reynolds where he talks to his pets like Doctor Dolittle that tell him to kill people would actually make a pretty damn enjoyable film.

The story is about are main character Jerry who is a likeable bachelor living in a seemingly normal apartment along with his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Mr. Whiskers. But under his innocent facade lies the minds of killer - thanks to the advice he gets from his evil cat, even while his benevolent dog tries to steer him right.

I don't think I'm the only one who thought this movie was going to bad and extremely laughable, I mean look at the plot for this movie and you may think to yourself "Wow this is going so awful but at least I'm going to laugh of how bad the movie is". That was my prediction before seeing the film and after seeing it I was surprise of how much of the film I took seriously and didn't really laugh much. The movie would be a lot funny if Nicolas Cage was cast for this role it will be the best comedy in years because we all know the kind of acting style Cage users in his movies which makes them comedy gold.

Ryan Reynolds is the kind of person that I feel sorry for, I mean give the guy a break his past movies got poor ratings and most of his films flopped hard at the box office. He seems like a really nice guy in real life judging by his interviews, and that's why he fitted the role so perfectly has this nice, lonely and also insane killer. What Reynolds got so well about his character is how he can switch personality, one minute his nice and the next his insane. Good work Ryan.

The director of this movie Marjane Satrapi who previously did a film called Persepolis which I think not a lot of people saw, which is a shame really because it's a great movie. Satrapi directed this movie with style and a sense of passion from other films or TV shows to make this movie and the main character, because through out the movie I got that mix of Doctor Dolittle and that Elijah Wood film Maniac. She directed the movie and she actually made the whole film for me serious. Nice one Marjane Satrapi.

The movie itself is beyond weird and strange, but it's the kind of strange that I look at and accept the strangeness because well I think the world and people are strange, because we are just ants living on a floating rock in the big galaxy, think about that.

For problems these only some like: With out giving anything away, the ending to this movie has to be the biggest What The F*** moment that I had. I not going to say what happens but when you see the film you probably think that to yourself has well.

With that mixed genre, the viewer is whipped hither & yon, never quite sure what to expect or what to make of the goings on. The day after I saw it, I liked it even better & have to give it a pretty high score just for originality and the fact that it doesn't go off the rails (at least not in a bad way, you know, where the concept devolves into some annoying miasma of plot twists & artsy imagery.) Not only does The Voices cover all the aforementioned ground, but the film also provides insight into mental illness & childhood trauma in an entertaining way. Ryan Reynolds & Anna Kendrick wouldn't especially draw me to a movie, but they did a nice job here, especially Reynolds in his turn as a Dexter-esque dude. The topic of women getting stalked & slashed is something I'd typically avoid (hate that fetishy vibe & have seen it too much) -- but somehow this turn manages to embrace that theme in a OK way & give it a fresh take. So I was waiting for it to premiere in Paris. I hoped that more of the cast would come but I was glad to see Marjane Satrapi. I know Reynolds is shooting Deadpool so he gets a pass, as for Aterton I know she has her musical but London is a mere two hour train ride away she could have made an effort. Anyway, Satrapi quickly spoke about how the movie came about. Persepolis and her Oscar nomination for it changed her life. Her American agent offered a lot of projects that she wasn't feeling but to me it sounds like they sort of put her in a box. But The Voices was different and refreshing from what she had dine so far, so she went for it and in my opinion it was a good decision.

The movie is hilarious, quirky and very entertaining. The Voices could be a mix between Dexter and a good comedy. It's charming and pulls you into the madness with a wicked sense of humor. The director did an amazing job in delivering a good horrish comedy. I expected the comedy but I was surprised by how dark and depressing the movie gets. The focus shifts between reality and fantasy, which makes for very colorful shots that lightens the mood.

Bosco, the dog, and Mr. Whiskers, the cat, are just gems. They are the movie's representation of the devil and the angel appearing over a cartoon character's shoulders. They simply steal the movie, that's how funny they are. So The Voices is colorful and dark at the same time. It gets real but it's fun. It has a very serious mental illness at the center of it but there are a lot of hilarious twists that gives a unique look at Schizophrenia.

Ryan Reynolds is amazing as the sweet-faced, socially awkward Jerry. He gave an amazing performance in this film in all of his roles, because he has several in this movie, he's really good. He showed a nice range in his acting ability. The cast in general elevated the movie. Gemma Aterton, Anna Kendrick, Jacki Weaver were all great in the movie, they each brought something to the table and made the experience worthwhile.

He is phenomenal in a truly unhinged and chilling performance. He plays the mentally ill psycho very well and almost convinces you it's not an act. The film is kind of funny, but operates better when it focuses on the psychological aspect and really offers some interesting viewpoints on mental illness and the thoughts of the everybody in the world as well. It is actually an interesting film in that regard, but the final scene is where it truly goes off-the-rails. That final sequence that stretches into the credits is one of the worst things I have ever seen and really took the air out of the rest of the film. It was so bad, in fact, it made the film as a whole suffer. Fortunately, it is a really fun and horrifying time made all the much better by the fact that Reynolds is truly engrossing as the lead. Don't let the "talking animals" in the promotional materials for the movie fool you. Despite comedic elements, this movie is not really a comedy. I cannot say I have been a fan or follower of Ryan Reynolds in the past. After seeing his performance in "The Voices", I will definitely be watching out for future performances.

The only times I even grinned were when the protagonist, Jerry (Ryan Reynolds), talked with his boss -- Reynolds knows how to make those light moments funny. When the killing started, there was absolutely nothing humorous about it (and I have definitely laughed at killing in other more skillfully directed black comedies).
With this kind of material, the director needs to be especially deft with tonal shifts, but the tone almost never felt right to me.

I bumped my rating up a couple of points for Reynolds performance and the film's refreshing weirdness, but it's only worth watching if you're bored and can watch for free, IMO.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is very much a dark comedy and crime related film, with horror elements present and themes including murder, trauma and impersonation. Its very much a surreal and wacky type of a film, which is made clear from the start, probably about the second scene onwards. The ending is also particularly spookily light hearted and fun to watch.

I felt there was a strongly artificial feel of what I can only term as 'enforced happiness' present relatively early on, with the film having somewhat of a corporate feel to it as well. It struck me, somehow, as possibly like a live action, darker version of something like Garfield. It also reminded me of the relatively new Netflix series 'Santa Clarita Diet', due to the more gory elements and dark humour, of course.

Cast wise, Ryan Reynolds plays the main character, Jerry, who comes across, certainly initially, as quite a regular inoffensive, run-of-the-mill type - a pretty average-joe. I found myself feeling sorry for him after the initial turn of events. He is the sort of person who, I imagine, most wouldn't think it at all likely that he'd do what he does and in a way I suppose that could make the film more disturbing, or distressing but I felt it added to the dark humour. Reynolds was, I felt, a good choice to play Jerry - he certainly looks the part as an average-joe. There is a certain bumbling naivety that he shows through his portrayal, I felt. Meanwhile, Gemma Arterton plays Fiona, portraying a bright and breezy young English girl and Anna Kendrick plays Lisa. Jacki Weaver plays Jerrys doctor, doctor Warren.

I did find it relatively amusing in parts but, as I say, it is quite surreal. Some may feel it to be a bit distasteful, not least as it seems to portray someone with mental health issues, who hears voices clearly being prone to sudden violence and far from everyone is that way - its an unfortunate stereotype of sorts but I mostly enjoyed the film, for its quirkiness. I wondered about describing Jerry as an underdog type but then I'm not sure if we'd be wanting to 'root' for him, giving the circumstances. If I had to compare it to a TV show then the first one that would come to mind would be Dexter, which was (is? if its still going - I watched it for a few seasons but then stopped as it got quite 'same-y' and a little overly bleak for my liking overall) quite heavy with dark comedy. At times, I noticed the use of a sort of child like, instrumental, perhaps including harp music, which added to the artificial, corporate and naive feel of the film. There was relatively little other music. Content wise, the film features frequent strong language, sex references and some TV footage that seems to show various animals mating. There is also some quite bloody violence, some of which isn't entirely shown on screen but we see a fair amount of blood including on people, in the form of blood spatter and the like. Severed body parts are also shown, so if your very squeamish in relation to blood then this is likely a film best avoided. There is also a flashback scene featuring Jerry as a child, with his mother, which involves violence and may be particularly upsetting to some. Otherwise, Jerry's behaviour when things turn dark may well frighten people, particularly younger people. Due to this content, the film has been given a 15 rating.

While its a good film and its moderately memorable, it didn't strike me as being especially great as such. The characters are ok, mainly Jerry but the supporting roles were a little bland and I felt that, with a stronger script, perhaps this could have been a bit better, a bit more substantial. Overall, yes, I suppose I would recommend it. It won't suit everyone but it is relatively amusing and it features a good performance by Ryan Reynolds, with some dark humour, its worth a watch, although it may seem a bit distasteful to some.
