Helen Mirrren is excellent as usual and a great choice for Prospero and stands out among a very uneven cast. The biggest problem with this film is the direction. The visual effects were laughably bad. Much of the movie reads like a perfume commercial. Another huge problem was two of the most important characters in the Tempest, Caliban and Ariel. Both were so downplayed as to almost be nonexistent. A terrible adaptation of an amazing classic with some stand out moments and performances. Overall, a deeply flawed re-imagining. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Tempest: This film was awful. The writing was great and that was just about the only thing that was good. Everything else was absolutely horrifyingly bad. The CGI is the most unconvincing I have ever seen, the effects around Ariel are so edgy and overdone that it’s downright laughable. Don’t get me started on the sound design; most scenes are way too quiet to hear and often find yourself replaying each scene to hear what was said. The music is a horrible cacophony of noise and often serves no purpose to the scene (the rock scores are the worst). The representation of Prospero too; this really isn't the right actor to be playing this sort of character, why couldn't you get the likes of Christopher Lee or Ian McKlellan? I would not recommend this movie to anyone and I would immediately say no to anyone who asked me if it was good.
