The concept of noise impacting your mood is something that fits pretty much anywhere, and that very same concept is enough to arouse interest and curiosity.

However, the concept never makes of this a prominent film, because the whole ordeal is a boring and flat story, unable to do its idea justice.

Both Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones are sufficiently good enough to prevent the film from becoming lost, even given its short duration, but they're not enough to transform this story into something more significant or transcendental. The Sound of Silence is an insecure film that never seems to have found the best way to proceed and be more suggestive, or at least more diligent, so the result is bitter and underwhelming.
