In execution though it flops so so so hard. It's biggest problem in my opinion is that it doesn't fully commit to any of the themes it sets up. "Good people are pretty bad people are ugly", a good idea to show why the pretty people aren't all good and the ugly people aren't all bad. Nope it's ignored unless it's convenient and the bad teacher is the prettiest person there, why isn't she ugly?? That's just one example without a spoiler, there was massive potential here and it was all wasted. Expand

Every time a movie like this comes out, especially if it's from Netflix, you should mentally add an extra 3-4 points to the average.
It's so sad what Disney has been doing to review sites the last few years. If only they'd put as much effort into making movies, they might start making something worth watching again.

The movie depicted evil as narcissistic entitled posers pretending to be good while real goodness is empathy and compassion. That’s a significant message for these times. The acting ranged from passable to good, although I do expect better from Charlize Theron. She is such a phenomenal actress, but her role in this movie was just acceptable. I thought both young stars gave believable performances. Most of the characters were stereotypical high school kids which were adequately portrayed. The effects were acceptable. Overall I’m giving this movie a higher rating because I think the message is culturally important rather than for story or acting. Expand

A mostly faithful adaptation of the novel. I do think it would have worked better as a TV series. It's good for what it is.

Me encanta la película Más Pensaba que Sophie terminaría dándole el beso a tedros , y lo hace Agatha , lo más importante es que su amistad es tan fuerte eso es lo que destaca entre ellas dos ,espero una secuela

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Please, Winx Saga: Fate did a better job at friendship between girls than this. The movie gave off all the wrong vibes. Don't recommend it to anyone - waste of time. To begin, the vibes the movie gave off were wrong from the very start and the settings was too unrealistic and underdeveloped. Also, the movie seemed to glorify evil more than good even though it kept saying good is better. The supposedly cool scenes were given to acts of witchcraft and demon magic and what not. Songs were played in scenes of evil being demonstrated rather than good, as if it was screaming: "do evil, it's powerful and cool". Also not a fan of the songs they chose for this movie, it didn't sound magical at all, just plain evil. Some of the actors were terrible at acting; some scenes made me cringe so hard, like the younger version of Sophie and Agatha at the graveyard. Some scenes were also too long and boring and others were too fast, like flashes of Sophie catwalking - also cringe. No characters other than the two main ones got any sort of character development throughout a 2.5hr movie - unforgivable! Some of the details were not satisfying rather creepy in a very unaesthetic way - like Sophie's hag form, biting fairies, blood magic with no specific source, and whatever Hort was eating (these truly disgusted me, but so happy they omitted the potty humor stuff from the book). Finally, the kiss at the end. I know its from the book, but it made me cringe in the book and also in the movie. I was hoping they would change it to something like Maleficient - like a kiss in forehead. Who kisses their dying friend in the mouth? I know there is a culture somewhere in the world that does that, but that does not apply here. Totally awkward. The ending was not so good either, of them returning to their own world and the cliffhanger was blunt - Narnia's return to their own world was 1000 times better and their music was magical. Overall, it was one of the most boring movies I ever watched and I wish to forget that it ever existed tomorrow when I wake up. Thank you very much. Expand

Special effects, cinematography, casting, storyline and overall quality of the film were excellent. From watching the trailer, I knew it would be a good movie but after watching, my expectations were surpassed. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.

Paul Feig has never directed a good movie in his entire life and he was given what is probably the biggest budget of his career to helm an overstuffed and boring story of fantasy.

There is no soul or strength in this movie. I didn't find any of its characters to be really interesting and that's more of a problem than you can imagine.
Truth be told I wasn't expecting much, I had an idea of what I was going to see and that was basically it, so my disappointment is not based on what the film is, but on its inability to achieve any of the splendor that its proposal and production size seemed to aspire to.

The irony is that I think this might have worked more for Netflix as a series rather than a movie, but had that happened, they wouldn't have been able to secure the biggest names in its cast.

This is content filler with the ambition to create a franchise.
I certainly think they will get a sequel though.

The School For Good And Evil

This fantasy movie based on a novel of the same name trails two best friends who are whisked to a school that grooms future heroes and villains. In this new environment, their friendship is put to the test.

There are some things that are undeniable about this movie. Firstly is the acting of the cast. Sophia Anne Caruso as Sophie and Sofia Wylie as Agatha delightfully lead this movie, the chemistry between them carries the movie. And with Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh and Laurence Fishburne in supporting roles, this movie was handled by capable hands. Secondly, the cinematography and visuals were splendid, with a very campy feel to everything on display. The costumes were beautiful. The score was also interesting.

With all of those praises, it's a shame that a lot was crammed into it. The story is convoluted and would have worked better as a series, this way, character development would have been more seamless.

This movie packs a good amount of humour, action and magic, and it should be the young adult fantasy franchise that Netflix seeks.

My Mother and I watched it the other day, and we could both say it's an iffy movie. It certainly had it's fair share of ups and downs; every movie does. However, The School For Good and Evil's negatives outshined the negatives. Again, I'm not here to bash it. I'm just saying there was more that could have been done to make it better. Expand

LOVED IT!!!! I know a lot of people aren’t the biggest fan of the movie because they’re different from the books, but I really enjoyed it and the author of the books wanted the movie different from the books to add a bit more flavour.

The combination of veteran greats (hello Charlize, Kerry, Lawrence & Cate) and younger new comers was fresh. The entire movie is quite stylized and there are some great music/fashion/vampy montage moments. The special effects were B+ but it kinda only adds to the playful, campy vibes. Like any good fairy tale, there are moral messages baked in and if you love fairy tales like I do, you'll appreciate this modern spin. Expand

Devotees striving to save trash are just as sad as devotees angered by diverse casting and unwelcome plot divergences. Luckily this is just entertainment and not real life. Oh wait these same folks are also responsible for the real life we're experiencing.

In their defense, "School" fans are just trying to get themselves a series, not as malicious as review bombing, because if they get what they want and come out to watch it, well that's how capitalism works. and I understand that. For the rest of us this film will make sure we don't waste another two and a half hours should any sequels materialize.

I just watched this movie today and all I can say is, it was fantastic. The whole storyline and narrative of the film was brilliant, the casting was also very good. It is definitely worth the watch.

Both young actors playing the main characters delivered convincing performances, in my opinion.  The majority of the characters were stereotypical high school students that were well represented and portrayed. The visual effects, setting and camera work throughout the film was satisfactory. Overall, I give this film a higher rating as I believe the message is culturally important and I also adore the fact it was filmed in Belfast, my hometown in Northern Ireland.
