It deserve a cult status: if both the movie and the musical are still played for 30 years there is a reason.
Watch it with some friends to do some proper audience participation (throw back dialog, dance, sing along... even in your couch) it is meant to be vieved with company.

It's the ultimate guilty pleasure that's so wrong it's right. It's definitely a movie that shouldn't have ever worked by any means but by some cinematic miracle it does and brilliantly so. You know the story, a recently engaged couple Brad played by a sexy Barry Bostwick and Janet played by the iconic Susan Sarandon are traveling home from a friend's wedding and their car breaks down. So they head out in the rain and come upon a giant haunted looking mansion. Upon arriving they are greeted by a creepy and fabulous brother sister duo and than they meet the doctor a "sweet transvestite" played the charasmatic and timeless Tim Curry. Filled with amazing songs and an abundance of infinite creativity. Rocky Horror picture show is one of the best films ever made and should never try and be remade (let's forget about Fox's travesty). It's an undeniable classic of epic proportions and has one of the biggest and deserved cult fan bases of all time.

Budget: $1.4M

I'm not sure if its just nostalgia but I still absolutely love this movie and I believe that this has probably one of the best performances in all of cinema and the story and just everything about it is so fun and entertaining. The music in this is also absolutely great with exciting or beautiful instrumentals along with beautiful singing. That is to say, the film is a masterclass in gaudy costumes, flamboyant song-and-dance numbers and hammy dialogue - it's fully aware of what it is and is not afraid to exploit it to the nth degree. Rocky Horror is far more than a mere camp-classic, however, it's an extremely clever semi-parody of cheap 50s sci-fi movies presented in the form of a rock-musical - there's nothing else like it in the world! The film has undeniably become a cultural phenomenon over the years thanks to its fanatical cult following, and it's easy to see why. The songs are catchy and easy to join in with, there's plenty of humour throughout, of both the unashamedly bizarre and more grounded variety, and of course, there's Tim Curry. He gives the performance of his career as Dr. Frank N. Furter - part mad scientist, part cross-dressing rockstar, and you can't help but smile whenever he's on screen. The creative mind behind the whole Rocky Horror project (both film and stage show), Richard O'Brien needs to be commended for bringing together such a staggeringly wide range of ideas into one (relatively) coherent entity - he's obviously an avid film fan, so he packs Rocky Horror full of references for cinephiles to lap up, but he's also a talented song and screen writer, musician and of course he portrays the decidedly creepy, yet strangely likeable "handyman" Riff Raff. You're carried along supping this strange filmic **** quite happily for the majority of the film, but it is in its last twenty minutes or so that Rocky Horror disappoints a little. It's almost as though everyone's run out of steam, and so we drift towards a rather damp and unsatisfying conclusion. Perhaps we were taken in by all the bright lights and fishnets of the rest of the film, but the fact remains that Rocky Horror's final act is its weakest element. That said, you'll hardly care if you see The Rocky Horror Picture Show as it was meant to be seen - with a group of friends, perhaps dressed up, and participating in the whole experience, especially the Time Warp. Couple at wedding, get engaged themselves, long drive home, take wrong turn & get puncture, stop at castle, gender-bending mayhem.
Richard O'Brien's musical which has caused students to dress up in underwear everywhere and do that bloody dance!
It is very tongue-in-cheek, and the songs are well written, mostly in that early 70s style with a fifities feels that was going on at the time, although some of the acting a little wooden. Tim Curry however stands out oozing sexuality as the cross-dressing Frank N Furter & blows everyone else away whatever scene he is in.

The first half is a wonderfully chipper exercise in fantastical film making. The second unfortunately drags as the film becomes too wrapped up in making a point, be it through the music, or the bizarre costumes. However the 2nd half doesnt stop Rocky from being one of the most unique, exhilarating films I have seen in a while with an opening hour that trundles along at a brisk pace to some loud and proud musical numbers too wonderful to spoil.
The best part of Rocky, even as the film turns glacial towards the end is Tim Curry. His portrayal of Dr Frank N Furter is so honest and electric that he lights up the screen. He is so incredibly fearless in his actions and his performance, its a pleasure to watch. The film strives for camp and achieves it but it also has great satire mixed in providing some hilarious moments. Overall the film is thoroughly original with some great comedy and musical numbers with a great lead in Tim Curry. It's only flaw is the last 30 minutes slow the story down so much it ruins the thrill given by the rest of it.

The comedy is feels a bit forced most of the time, but Curry, as, usual, give a fantastic and unforgettable performance (yet leaving me feeling really confused at the same time.) However when the movie tries to have a serious moment, or just plain old exposition, it tends to drag a bit.

Overall:
For what it is and when it came out, it is surprisingly original. But it is the songs that steal show and make this the cult classic that is. Like I said before, I despise this movie. Yet I also really enjoy it. The movie leaves me feeling wrong all over, yet entertained.

Not a perfect script, but what's more shocking than the plot is the perfect premise of the film, which says more about humans than either characters' spoken words alone. I've never seen a movie that is so charismatic in it's extreme weirdness, and it uses a main villain who is at once sexually liberating but hedonistic and maniacal. Like many other good movies, it ends by leaving a new view of the world on the viewer's mind, left for us to sort out the good and the bad. What kept in my mind after seeing it was that beyond the ridiculousness, there is so much truth in the film, which could be felt but not described until much more thinking.

Other aspects worth mentioning are the occasional great songs along with a mixture of movie "styles" that is if not unique, uniquely effective. This movie feels much better in retrospect than while watching, but the music or Tim Curry's acting can keep the fan going.

Despite the movie's flaws, this is probably one of the best movies ever made.

If you haven't seen it already, give yourself a treat! I will warn youI have this on VHS, and it is one of my all time guilty pleasures. It has a great cast, a catchy music score and unforgettable satire on monster movies, like Frankenstein. If you haven't seen it already, give yourself a treat! I will warn you though, it is extremely silly at times, but that is all part of the fun. And I seriously don't care whether it's poorly made or not and I don't think so personally, all that matters is that it's entertaining, and that is what exactly RHPS is. The cast is wonderful. Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick do a great job as Brad and Janet, although I didn't know they could sing, which really surprised me. Richard O'Brien is solid as Riff Raff and he also wrote the songs. Also solid are Patricia Quinn and Peter Hinwood. The best performance, however, comes from Hollywood's most underrated actor, Tim Curry, who I must say looks hot in fishnets and heels. He has a great singing voice, that is always overlooked. FrankNFurter is a landmark performance, but Tim Curry has also done other great films such as Clue, Legend,Muppets Treasure Island, Blue Money and It. (which has his career-best performance by a mile.) Voiceovers include Captain Hook, Slagar, Hexxus, Drake, Forte, Von Talon and the Mouse King. The songs are so catchy, especially "Time Warp" and "Sweet transvestite" that I actually wanted to dance to the music, but I am a novice at dancing. The complaint about this movie, which is undoubtedly the best cult movie ever, no matter how many times it's been imitated, is the song "Science fiction" which is not in the same league as the more uplifting songs. Still I am happy, and lets do the time warp again! 9.5/10. Bethany Cox. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is saucy, loud, perhaps brash but also...a bit of fun! its quite sexual and won't appeal to all but I can understand why it has a cult following. Most of the songs are catchy, not least the well known Time Warp song.

I imagine this was regarded as very risque when it first came out (so to speak) in the 1970s. There are obviously sex references, partial nudity and implied violence, although most of the content is quite comical (frightfully so!). As a bit of entertainment, its not at all bad, although it isn't necessarily the kind of film late teens (its rated 15 in the UK, which seemed about right to me - I wouldn't recommend it be shown to anyone under the age of 15 or thereabouts) would want to watch in the same room as their parents, shall I say!. I liked the settings, various rooms with some colourful items and such like.

My favourite scene featured a young Meat Loaf seemingly crashing the party, which didn't entirely go down well. It was certainly an amusing watch, one thats worth seeing.

The film holds a very special meaning, which in 1975 wouldn't have been accepted, you could say it's revolution. It was something that people could watch and feel accepted and then express themselves. I've got to say though, the story was really crazy, like if I was to explain it you'd think I was joking.

You could tell it was very cheap, but I was surprised to see some really interesting shots that were very experimental, in fact there was a lot of technical aspects that were very experimental. I thought it was really cool how the narrator was telling the story directly to us, breaking the fourth wall. The music was really fun, and I'm glad I finally got to see the "Time Warp" song. I didn't even know it was in this film, so I had a lot of surprises in this viewing.

Definitely go into this knowing nothing like how I did thinking it was a horror.
