This brutal journey is intensified by director Alejandro GonzálezLeonardo DiCaprio plays a hunter/tracker whose encounter with a bear is only the beginning of his struggle for survival in the frigid American northwest of the 1800s. This brutal journey is intensified by director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s masterful vision for capturing the harshness of nature and malevolence of men. Some of the sequences are technically astounding. Add to that the incredible scenery and immensely beautiful (mostly available light) cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki. DiCaprio suffers with extreme commitment, but it’s the almost unrecognizable Tom Hardy, whose menacing villain is the acting standout. Even with the 3-hour running time, the intensity never slacks and the skillful storytelling creates a harshly compelling cinematic tour de force. Expand

Best movie of the year. Incredible performance by Dicaprio and Hardy. At 3 hours I was worried I'd get bored, but it never happened. The negative reviewers are paid trolls. This movie isn't for the typical american peasant.

Riveting from start to finish. Cinematography to die for. Leo completely wrong for the lead role but still nails it. The acting, the story, the adventure. Going to probably win all the rewards.

A simple, yet powerful score. And an endlessly fascinating narrative dwelling in the film's heart. "The Revenant" is easily one of the year's best films. I couldn't take my eyes off this movie. All the hellish conditions undergone by the cast and crew while shooting in sequential order and using only natural lighting really paid off with one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences ever (as far as I'm concerned). Though some of the wide-angle shots remind you that you're watching a film, the emphasis on realism is absolutely transporting. Some of the best action scenes are shot entirely with one take as well which adds to their immediacy. The performances by DiCaprio and Hardy are top-notch and both truly disappear into their roles. Can't recommend this enough. Lubezki's cinematography... it must have been such hell getting some of those shots. This is Inarritu's best work by far, beating out the gimmicky "Birdman" and the visionary but depressing "Babel". A true gem of cinema and easily among the top 3 films of 2015. Go see it in the best theater possible!! Expand

It's authenticity, acting, cinematography, direction--all superb. What resonated with me the most, besides the incredible battle scene with the rondelay of swooping camera work, was the weaving together of glass's loss with the search by the native American father. The convergence makes for an ending that is deeply beautiful. Since Idris Elba and Abraham Attah were tragically overlooked for Oscars, I'm fine with Leo getting the award. And this picture getting top honors along with best director and cinematography. Expand

Every moment watching this film I felt like I was in the same environment as Glass. It is a very long film, but because of how immersive the film was I never felt drawn out or slow to me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MASSIVE SPOILERS!!! I'm a bit shocked how people criticize this movie just because of some "unbelievable" scenes. Why don't you just accept the fact that some people (especially back then) where a lot stronger, immune and natural. Also, the idea of revenge kept him alive for his last mission! It's not very often when i give 10/10, but let me tell you why i'm doing it! This is one of the greatest movies about surviving and revenge! Fitzgerald killed his son, so he killed him! He killed the Grizzly mother, so nature took him (the final breath on the end)! I believe this movie is a true masterpiece and Leo should finally win his Oscar! Expand

Holy Smokes. I just finished watching this captivating movie a little
while ago and it was Absolutely Phenomenal. I will start with the story
which is about the explorer named Hugh Glass who is left for dead by a
friend after a brutal bear attack in the American Frontier of 1823. The
story is extremely solid especially since it's based on a true story. I
did find the story dragging a few times but it doesn't take off of the
score. I will now move onto the acting which was Breathtaking with both
Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio playing their roles to Perfection like
in every movie they have ever done prior. I must say that the two of
them together make for one Hell of a powerful movie experience. The
other actors played their roles just as well even though they were
minor in comparison. I will now move onto the action which was if I
dare say the most Savage and Barbarous Adaptation of combat during that
time period which took place on the American Frontier of the 1800's. I
mean it was Masterfully shot and truly one of a kind even to present
day Military movies. The military movies of today pale in comparison to
just how Ruthless it was back then for the men who fought. I will now
move onto the Cinematography which was done by Emmanuel Lubezki which
is a Master of his Arts. I mean they shot the film in both Canada and
Argentina and a small part in America but the dedication it takes to
travel all the way to South America for snow just to double as the
American Frontier says volumes on how dedicated the cast and crew were
on this film. I can't stress enough how visually stunning the shots
were and how realistic it all felt and the music was on point even
though it was sparse it was still Amazing. I will close with this
statement and that is that you must go and watch this film. I mean it's
one of the Best Films and the most refreshingly original films in terms
of the cinematography and the depth of the characters will power to
evoke just how Indomitable the human body and the human spirit can be
when it wants something bad enough.

But it is worth noting that the film is not only Leonardo DiCaprio. Its performance is overwhelming and it seems that the actor can actually lead a statuette home, but if not, there is no reason for the film being undervalued or overlooked. Movies are no longer made as well, combine perfectly the real thing with little CGI (bear attack scene is spectacular and an of the most stunning never seen), epic, violent and absolutely amazing, a true masterpiece.

It is an unresistant hypnotic drama that combines revenge, survival, violence and desperation intensely that would certainly chill audiences both physically and mentally. Each and every single detail of the film is taken care perfectly, death and evilness of the characters are well captured with beauty and horror thanks to the cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, the setting of the stranded nature background and the powerful orchestral scores add on the sombre effects which all contribute to the impressive technical aspects of the cinematic experience. Leonardo DiCaprio amazes again with his brutal and anchoring performance struggling to survive while the commitment between him and Tom Hardy into their respective roles have successfully turned the director's artistic visions into an immersive life of death journey. Although it seems to be a strange film with striking images of blood soaking ground, animals and humans, it is an inspiring wild expedition about humanity and inhumanity that is elegant in its own simplicity. "My heart bleeds. But revenge is in the creator's hands".

The Revenant is set in the 1820s, in the uncharted wilderness of America, Hugh Glass set out with a hunting party on an expedition. Glass was mauled by a bear and left for dead but through sheer will and to get back to his family, Glass survived - but that wasn't the only thing on his mind as he set out to payback the men who left him behind.

I remember last year around January time when I saw the two images for The Revenant, with Leo holding a Kentucky Flintlock Rifle looking like he's not playing around. Just by those two images caught my interest. I then found out it was directed by the magnificent Alejandro González Iñárritu who did the Oscar wining "Birdman" (A movie that I personal loved). The Revenant quickly became my most anticipated movie of 2015, as I was looking forward to this movie more than Star Wars, and yes I said it. And after finally seeing the movie myself, I can safely say that I was not disappointed. The Revenant is one of the most stunning, brutal, intense, grizzly movie experience I've ever had. The movie isn't for everyone, but I loved it.

Alejandro González Iñárritu is starting to become my 3rd favorite director working today, because he's such an old school director when it comes to storytelling by the use of art. There's been a lot of drama happening behind the scenes of this movie, with the weather stopping the production or if someone made a mistake while filming, the crew must stop for the day and wait until tomorrow, because one mistake could lose a lot of day light for a scene (It was shot in natural lighting). One of the studios suggested that the movie should be shot using computer generated to make things much easier, but luckily Iñárritu said no to the idea by stating, "If we ended up in greenscreen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of **** And after seeing the movie I gotta say that it was the perfect decision, because it's very rare for a director today to take that risk and avoid what the studio says. Yes there are some CGI scenes, but the way that the animated effect's blended together with the practical effect's is handled incredibly well. This is one of the best directed I've seen in 2015 and I know Iñárritu already won an Oscar already, but I hope he wins another one for this, because never before have I seen a revenge tale presented so unique and utterly magnificent.

I respect Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, but in this movie, he sleeps inside of a dead horse naked and eats raw food from animals, now if this doesn't get him an Oscar, nothing will. He's performance in this movie is what a call ''a silent performance'', because Leo barley has that much lines in the movie and the only time he dose get to talk is in a different language (Which Leo has said it was tricky to learn the language). DiCaprio has proven time and time again that he's more than the pretty face actor, but in this movie I only saw Hugh Glass, not DiCaprio. That's my biggest praise I have to give to Leo as he had to deliver all the emotions, the pain, the tortured soul that Hugh Glass was and it's all through his face and eyes, and trust me when I say this but it's not easy as you think. We are so use to seeing Leo as the angry, pretty boy billionaire in every movie he's in, but in this movie I thought he was fantastic, as he played the man who lost everything and the tortured soul that Hugh was as a person was. With very little lines he had, he still manages to make a powerful performance that's so far his best. I really hope Leo gets an Oscar for this.

Tom Hardy also gave an Oscar worthy performance in this movie. I've heard that some people had trouble understanding him in this movie (Or just in everything that he's in really). Sometimes I didn't understand what he said but most of the time I did. But all that a side, I still think he was fantastic in the movie. He really added a lot to his character, because sometimes you understand the things that he dose in movie and yes the things he dose in the movie are wrong, but in a rough environment that these people are in, you would likely do the same. I'm not sure if he would get in for best supporting actor, but I hope he dose.

I'm running out of things to say about Emmanuel Lubezki breathtaking cinematography. The camera work and how he makes the camera feel like a character of it's own is seriously impressive. Lubezki captures nature on film, that shows it's beauty and it's unpredictable surprises. The people running the Oscars should just give Lubezki his third Oscar right now, because he's going to take that third trophy home.

Now for the flaws and there's not that many for me: Some of the character logic towards the end of the movie didn't make that much senses to me, and that's really it.

Overall The Revenant is one of most intense, stunning, brutal movies I've seen in 2015. The score is haunting, the editing was top notch and that bear attack scene was just terrifying, I mean how the hell did they do that?. I don't know about you, but I honestly can't stop thinking about this movie. It's one of those movies that sticks with you after it's over and it isn't going away anytime soon.

Leonardo DiCaprio gives one of the best,if not the best performance of the year by a male in a leading role and I truly hope that this time he actually gets to win an Oscar for this. He's so committed to the role and it shows especially in some of the more brutal scenes.
Tom Hardy also nails the role perfectly and gives almost an equally great performance as Leo.His voice is weird though but by now we're used to him having different voices on different roles, even though sometimes is hard to understand what he's saying.
It does get brutal though and some of the things that the characters have to do to survive are beyond disgusting but reasonable and understandable for the situations they're in.
The soundtrack is also very good but it's not what you take away from the movie the most, because the amazing cinematography and the style of the movie, the direction that Alejandro G.Iñárritu goes including here the two amazing performances of the leads are what you take away the most about this amazing cinematic achievement.
At 153 minutes it is a bit too long but that doesn't take away from the movie that much because this still remains as one of the best movies of the year with some of the best performances, cinematography, visuals a really good score and memorable scenes that are bound to stick in your mind for a long time after.

Alejandro González Iñárritu has proved that he is not a one hit wonder with this movie. The cinematography is the best I’ve seen all year with great single shots instead of cutting scenes. The natural lightning used in the movie was just beautiful to look at and made the movie viewing experience great. Leonardo DiCaprio‘s performance in this movie hands down the best performance of the year and his career. If he doesn’t win the Oscar then no one will. The other performances were great. I was really fascinated with the gore aspect of this movie it felt more realistic than any other R-rated movie. The score of the movie is brilliant. The only issue I have with the movie was that it’s a slow paced movie and I’d have loved to see more of Hugh Glass’ backstory.
In the end The Revenant is one of the best movies of this year. I recommend everyone to watch this movie just for Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance .

" The Revenant " direct to the Academy Awards.

Why is there betrayal? Has always existed the revenge? What is survival? Does God exist? These are some of the millions of unknowns that the director Alejandro G. Iñárritu allows us to experience with his cinematic gem. "The Revenant" a visceral but artfully delicate piece that surpasses his previous project (Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and marks a new era in the survival movies.

Based on the 2002 novel by Michael Punke, chronicles the life of a man of the 19th century that after a couple of misfortunes must survive and seek revenge in a risky and hostile, territory, discovering that the more dangerous is not abroad, the more dangerous is where can reach.

It is a survival story, It's an ancient epic, It's a drama, It's a western, It's a teaching and explanation of the spirituality of a human being, It's all. Mark L. Smith and Iñárritu manage to create perfect DNA between a frozen forest and a frosted heart questioning the human potential to its maximum splendor.

Although a little invisible, the spiritual concept of God is often present in the development of the main characters (forgetting the Indians red skin) around the film, hidden in some scenes but in others this fully explicit (the analogy of Hardy between God and the squirrel). Literally this movie is "in the hands of the creator", any being that breath has reflected on their forehead the concept of a God, for Glass his son and his wife, for Fitzgerald a profitable future, for an Indian the loss of his daughter, In general are based on the physical, making stress upon the strong Glass wounds, creating a very temporary container to enter the presence of God. A measure that advances added more and more injuries in the metaphysics of the protagonist, but this only creates more strength in his head.

DiCaprio is the touch of any movie, it has been part of Quentin Tarantino in "Django Unchained", it has given it hand to Martin Scorsese in "The Wolf of Wall Street" but not even "Django" or "Wall Street" or "Titanic" Leonardo has made a physical, mental, psychological and spiritual performance so overwhelming and complicated as did with Alejandro. Walk dragged all the time, eat unimaginable things, murder, fight, pretend, and burn in locations devastated, have few hours of shooting, enduring cold, and experience work more complex (in all senses) of his career.

DiCaprio is a master, even when doing something as simple as a bath naked, rimmed his physical scars and emotional in below-zero temperatures. Will be this the Leonardo year? Hardy has not lost his talent, especially coming from the infernal desert "Mad Max: Fury Road" and the double performance of the gangsters in "Legend". He is alive, again. Hardy takes part to give a bit of testosterone and to demonstrate the customs of the (mostly male) Indians where kill, eat, shoot, hunt and rape was the only thing that could make a few heads, but that well was the 19th century.

Inarritu assassinated our minds, ears, eyes and hearts with a close-up images uncomfortable and bloody but both tense and exciting Open our auditory canals with a battle with arrows, shooting and adrenalin and close our eye focuses with blood, cold and fight. Number of elements are used in the film, forming the perfect union of the director and the crew a product with 12 nominations in the Academy Awards.

"Birdman" most striking point was the apparent recording in only one take, now, the point most visually striking was the Emmanuel Lubezki stunning decision in record fully with natural light for once again generating something new in the Hollywood world.

Auditory and visual accompaniments are perfectly incorporated, resonating strings and the ashes of a campfire is a clear example of the excellent work done by Ryuichi Sakamoto , Alva Noto, and others, having some results quite compelling. It is interesting that if we think, usually all the films nominated for a statuette from the Academy have such cohesion.

DiCaprio, Hardy, Inarritu and the team effort is analogically in the shedding of blood in the Glass front. Alejandro is breaking schemes, limits and stereotypes of Hollywood. It is all proud to see that a Latin American triumph in the most top of the podium. It makes me dream, the show me that it is possible.
"The Revenant" has shattered its competitors and Gonzales stands out more and more, but, Have already done so with "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)"? "The Revenant" closes a year deepest with a flourish, being terribly shocking and perfect, visceral, tremendous, real, spiritual, human, natural, exceptional. And care!

Thats honestly not even debatable, this movie is world class in the beauty department. Its hard to not enjoy a movie presented with such overwhelming views, the directing is wonderful as well and the unique ways of capturing tense scenes and using only natural lighting was a win. DiCaprio is solid, and his commitment to the role made the journey worthwhile. The story is simple enough, its not meant to be mindblowing or even clever, its just meant to be a journey. Its unrelenting and vicious. The bear scene in particular and the wounds close up after the fact is hard to watch, but its the realness of the actions/consequences that make it such a great piece of cinema, all the ingredients put together seamlessly throw you into the wild along with all the characters. Revenant: el renacido (2015)

Sinopsis:

The fact that this was shot without any CGI lighting in the most brutal of conditions should already put this movie on the radar for any movie-goer. Add to the movie that this is by Innarritu who directed Academy award winning Birdman, and you know that this movie sets expectations high. There isn't a scene anywhere that is wasted, those who complain about length and dullness (critics and average movie goers alike) seem to forget the adrenaline-pumping moments that demand your attention. In an era where comic movies with excessive CGI and low effort writing are winning views and reviews, this movie should be a stunning reminder to everyone that this is the real deal when it comes to film-making, entertainment at its highest form.

Addedum: How does a movie with a 76 metacritic rating end up with a 78% on rottentomatoes, when The Avengers that scored a 67 here ended up with a 92%?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolute masterpiece. I admit some bias in my rating because I love wilderness survival, and this film's era greatly appeals to me.

Anyway, I'll start with what I believed was the best element of the movie: the cinematography. The natural lighting creates the perfect atmosphere for this movie. From the orange glow of torches in the dead of night, to the beautiful light of the rising sun on the rocks in the final battle, every scene is stunning. The use of gory, uncensored practical effects were very realistic, and the CGI held it's own with motion and appearance.

The story started of with fast-paced action but then led to a tense quest for revenge leaving me at the edge of my seat at some of the most thrilling encounters. It's a story of suffering, survival, and bloodthirsty revenge. The villain, Fitzgerald, plays a unique role in which, unlike the typical bad-guy, isn't necessarily evil. He is just a selfish man concerned mainly with his own self preservation. Hugh Glass, the protagonist, borders on godliness with ridiculous, yet not completely unscaving, feats such as riding a horse off of a cliff into a fur tree. The drive for revenge in Glass pushes him throughout his journey into intense action balanced by calm points of travel. I've heard some complain about the movie being slow, but I believe some of the slower scenes really help to calm down from the heart-pounding intensity.

Overall this movie, even if one doesn't care for it's genre, is a beauty to see, especially in theaters. The acting was solid, and the dialogue, while minimalist, suited the environment of bitter, unfriendly cold. I don't often give movies a perfect score (this is the first movie review on this account though), but the thrills, beauty, and brutality of this movie combine to create the most epic frontiers movie ever. Then again, I may just be overly obsessed with survival and the outdoors, so take this amateur review with a grain of salt.

A masterpiece that only every few years can be seen. Only big movies are who manage to unite the mind of the viewer with what you see and hear on the screen, but most of the movies who succeed are feelings easier to translate, it's like doing a painting and capture on canvas the most beautiful colors, it is more difficult to make something beautiful with more openings or plain colors. Redemption, revenge is something that the viewer recognizes it in the movies as a blockbuster and nothing else. Inarritu put together an incredible photography, some majestic scenery, magnificent Leonardo Di Caprio and a good soundtrack (which to my taste is weak). Who else enjoy this film are the most exclusive observers who have a thin and sharp eye for the film. Expand

They leave him to a fate that seems inevitable, so when against all odds he lives he must then avenge the death of someone he loved, murdered by those who abandoned him.. That’s the basic story but The Revenant is more than that .

This movie drags you through the mud along with Glass, it is such a visceral and real experience, an experience i havent had since watching Saving Private Ryan. The beauty of the movie is the silence, the quite, the alone, that gets to you after 2h30m
It's more of an experience than an ''entertaining film'', it takes you in, and drags you along, very few movies can do that effectively, that you forget about everything except about the movie. (whilst watching)?

My biggest compliments to Alejandro and Lubezki for pulling off this incredibly difficult to shoot film.

It is impossible to take a film that has been nominated for twelve Oscars and not be left with any kind of expectation, especially if the film manages to bring together two of the big names in cinema today: Leonardo Di Caprio and AlejandroIt is impossible to take a film that has been nominated for twelve Oscars and not be left with any kind of expectation, especially if the film manages to bring together two of the big names in cinema today: Leonardo Di Caprio and Alejandro González Iñarritu. In this case, the film exceeded my expectations. The narrative tells a fictional story about one of the trips of Hugh Glass, an American pioneer and adventurer who actually existed. In this film, he is the guide of a group of hunters who venture into native territory to collect animal fur, a valuable and profitable item at that time. When the group is attacked by Indians and only a few survive, Glass leads them until he is attacked by a bear and is abandoned on the verge of death. Then he begins a struggle to survive, to return to the colony and to punish those who abandoned him.

Firstly, I loved the story. It is a classic story of revenge with an aroma of "Count of Monte Cristo" that has nothing astounding, but works well. Iñarritu knew how to give the film an excellent rhythm and dynamics, where there are no dead moments and everything is perfectly articulated and completely clear and noticeable. For me, what displeased me most was the invention of a son that the main character never had and that only exists in the film to increase the dramatic effect, but it is something that we managed to forgive before all the redeeming qualities that this film presents. It also has several action scenes with struggles, ambushes, deaths and even a rape (not explicit, but clear).

The cast is a fundamental part of the value of this film. Leonardo Di Caprio is a great actor, one of the best of our time, and he had nothing more to prove when he decided to make this film. He started a career in roles where all he had to do was be pretty, but he evolved, he became a real chameleon capable of surprising us with each film. But he still wanted to win the Oscar for Best Actor, for which he had already been nominated three times (in 2005 with the film "The Aviator", in 2007 for his work on "Blood Diamond" and in 2014 for "The Wolf of Wall Street"). Di Caprio appears here as we have never seen him, with an almost raw and violent realism. Tom Hardy also did an extraordinary job, giving life to the greedy selfish Fitzgerald, and Will Poulter, who we still remember to see emerging for the cinema in one of the Narnia trilogy films, is truly moving in a naive and nice character. Domhnall Gleeson was also excellent.

In addition to the engaging story and a strong cast that gives everything it has to surprise us, the film features the skill and detail of González Iñarritu, attentive to the smallest details and realism of what he is filming. Once again, he had the collaboration of the experienced Emmanuel Lubezki, who had already signed the cinematography of "Birdman", also by this director. The film is visually magnificent: the camera moves in our perspective as if we were part of everything, running away from the Indians and crawling on the floor; the skillful use of colors, natural light (not a single spotlight was used), filming in a real location, contrast and the effect of blur and depth gave the film a realism that almost transports us into the screen. The use of excellent costumes and the construction of genuine sets has also helped, and allows us to be better placed in the historical period when everything is happening. I can understand those people who criticized the film for exaggerating a bit in the filming of trees, sky and landscapes, its something that can tire some viewers, but I liked that and, for me, it was an additional quality. The use of CGI has not been overlooked, in particular to recreate the animals and the bear, but everything is so realistic that we can almost doubt the use of CGI. The sound and special effects also worked perfectly and the soundtrack is truly effective.

This film was so beautifully filmed because it was all filmed in ambient light. No extra lights, just with the light around them, and reflectors. From a photographer's perspective, this is extremely hard to do so this film is absolutely phenomenal.

A harsh winter for beast and man.

While having Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio is a definite boon, what really makes “The Revenant" a splendid cinematic experience is the utmost care for visual and cinematography. It's a series of immersive events taken with extreme care, minimal editing and a continuous shot after continuous shot of wintry landscape as it witnesses revenge and ordeal of savages.

It tells the story of Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he fights against beast, nature and fellow man to stay alive. There are a couple of other subplots though Glass' perspective takes the focus. One can argue that this is Leo's closest chance at Oscar in recent years, and it's hard not to see why. He's an expert on conveying emotions with sheer gestures and psychical attributes alone. If this movie is advertised as actual survival show, Leo would make people believe it.

On the other spectrum Tom Hardy as Fitzgerald is just equally amazing. He presents a much different persona than his other roles, I admittedly didn't recognize him for half of the movie. This is a brilliant act on his part to showcase the brutality of the time. Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter round up the crew nicely as duty bound captain and the more inexperienced frontiersman. The average length of scene is demanding and the cast delivers pleasantly.

The other subplots happen simultaneously as Glass' predicament, they could be highlighted more but this is just a slight scratch on the narrative and also not to impose on the main story line. Its visual is certainly a triumph in film making. There's no shortage of refinement on the sequences, whether it's dialogues or action. It's a precise, deliberate and unwavering presentation, captivating with its pronounced details as well as slight whisper or howl of the winter.

Few other movies manage to allure the audience into the world of the movie with stern excellent production and acting, "The Revenant" is truly breathtaking.

You won't get much complexity from this movie. Very little dialogue is actually said in the movie. Most of it is told from the actions and reactions to the world that the movie is set in, which is the real star of the show. DiCaprio does a great job at the main character Glass, and his reactions to what happens to him is basically the whole movie. The pacing is a bit slow and, for a close to 3 hour movie, it can be hard to sit through some of the more dull moments that happen. However the wonderful and gory fights scenes take the cake and deliver a very realistic way of fighting, whether it be against man or beast. I definitely enjoyed this movie more than Birdman as the focus on, basically, one character was far more precise here than in Birdman with it's many different scene stealing characters. Tom Hardy does a good job as the title villain but his thick accent can make understanding some of his lines a chore. I'd recommend this movie to alot of people, with the mindset that they can sit through alot of down moments and some definite gore that you don't see in alot of other movies of this type. Expand

First off, this movie is incredibly gorgeous. From its beyond beautiful cinematography to its gorgeous locations, it's a real cinematic movie that traps you in this environment. The cast (particularly the two leads) is fantastic. Tom Hardy gives arguably the best performance of his career in my opinion. He's an antagonist with layers and even brought unpredictability to his character. But Leonardo DiCaprio, is what you go to see. Saying that he gives a great performance is an understatement. He is Hugh Glass. Not once did I think to myself that I'm watching Leo give a performance. He felt like a real person! Maybe it's not my favorite performance of his but it's beyond damn good to say the least. I loved that it was a revenge story and one that makes you clinch your fists during the big combat sequences. You feel the brutality! And you feel Hugh Glass wanting to seek his revenge. It even has really good pace for a two and a half hour long movie. I never got bored because there was always something at stake. I will say that the very end felt a little too ambiguous for its own good. Other than that, I believe you have a strong contender for best picture at the oscars. Overall, it's a brutally beautiful movie with grit and heart pounding intensity. I'm going to give "The Revenant" an A! Expand

I had the chance to read Michael Punke's novel that this was based on before seeing this. So when watching the film, I noticed that it was straying awfully far away from what was happening in the book and at first I was disappointed. However,I had the chance to read Michael Punke's novel that this was based on before seeing this. So when watching the film, I noticed that it was straying awfully far away from what was happening in the book and at first I was disappointed. However, by the time the film ended, I understood more why this was the case. First off, the credits read "based in part on the novel by Michael Punke", so that was a dead giveaway right there. Also, Punke couldn't promote, do any publicity, or even be on set or aid in the making of the film due to the fact that he's currently an ambassador to the World Trade Organization, which prevented him from helping the filmmakers include many of the events from the novel. I also realized that since so little is known about what happened with the real-life Hugh Glass that multiple stories and plot points can be made up about him. Even Punke admitted to having to make up several events that were in the novel. So basically Punke was telling his own version of what Glass might've been through or experienced, while the filmmakers were telling their own as well. For these reasons, I'm able to forgive the fact that the film drastically strayed from the novel. In fact, the more I thought about it after the film ended, the more I realized that I actually liked the film better, because the third act in the novel kind of strayed from the revenge plot that it so specifically advertised and went more towards the justice route, whereas the film stuck firmly with the revenge plot, which made for a much more exciting and satisfying third act that truly made the film a great story of revenge! In addition to this, everything about this film was absolutely perfect and phenomenal! The gorgeous cinematography and landscape shots throughout, the hauntingly effective and powerful score, the brutal and unflinching violence and action, etc. And of course, the acting from everyone involved was outstanding! Leonardo DiCaprio will win his long overdue Oscar for this film, mark my words!!! Tom Hardy also delivers a very aggressive performance. Even Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter make the most of their characters and screentime. So overall, director Alejandro G. Inarritu does it again with a film that's just as intriguing and engaging as his last film Birdman was! It's undoubtedly one of the most impressive, powerful and memorable films of 2015! Expand

The film follows Glass after he is mauled by a bear and left for dead by his fellow fur traders. One of the frontiersmen, John Fitzgerald, kills his son, and Glass voyages over 200 miles to exact revenge on him. The Revenant is one of the most violent movies I've seen from 2015, although the incredible scenery and cinematography also make it one of the most astonishing movies to look at. It combines some intense, difficult-to-watch scenes with amazing scenery which makes it one of the most beautiful violent films I've seen. Leo's committed and demanding performance is certainly one of the best of his career especially because of the lack of the dialog in the film. The 156-minute running time, relentless brutality and limited dialog does take a bit of a commitment to finish, but The Revenant is a masterfully directed film that makes the most of its subject matter's intriguing story. The Revenant is a movie with a lot of backstories that makes, it even more impressive than it already is, and it is impressive. The Revenant is brilliantly acted, features beautiful cinematography all the while showing deep narrative heft. The film is poised to receive major awards attention, and rightfully so.
The first piece of backstory surrounding this film is fairly well known, and that is that Leonardo DiCaprio is still fighting for his first Oscar. After seeing this film, it seems safe to say that his performance is oscar worthy. DiCaprio carries the movie as long stretches of the film feature DiCaprio alone, acting in an isolated surrounding, which is even harder to do. DiCaprio often balances soft-hearted empathy and stone-cold revenge within small stretches, and every emotion is well accentuated. While the focus is on DiCaprio, because he’s the cornerstone of the film, Tom Hardy and Domhall Gleeson are also brilliant in this film as well.
Another piece of backstory that may not be as well known is that Director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki decided to shoot the entire film with nothing but natural light. To go a little deeper, considering exposure and reciprocity this gave the filmmakers only a few hours to shoot per day in order to get a good exposure. Even more impressive is that the film is stunningly gorgeous, and by that I mean that the film looks professionally lit, despite the use of no lighting. This is Lubezki’s third consecutive cinematography masterpiece, and he’ll probably end up winning his third consecutive Oscar for cinematography.
The other impressive aspect of the film is the story. Most westerns tell straightforward stories, with simple characters (good guy vs. bad guy), that’s not bad it’s just easier to follow. The Revenant mixes traditional western conventions such as the use sweeping panoramic vistas, and the typical setting, but has far more complicated and deeper characters. All of the characters in this film are relatable because their motivations are easy to follow, just not always pleasant. The end result of the realistic character development is that the story is far more realistic and thus thought provoking.
In conclusion, The Revenant is brilliantly acted, and may be the film to finally get Leonardo DiCaprio his much awaited Oscar win. The film is beautifully shot and will, more than likely, win the Best Cinematography oscar. The story is uncompromising, and graphic when it needs to be. For those who love artistic films, this is right up your alley, and for those who love westerns, you’ll probably enjoy it too.

This film is excellent, but it's not laden with a mess of subtexts or any disorienting storytelling gimmicks. It's extremely straightforward, as are the characters, and there are some moviegoers who cannot forgive that. Personally, I see something simple executed to near perfection, and I appreciate it as such. This film is visually stunning, and incredibly immersive. The early battle scene is extremely reminiscent of the infamous beach scene of Saving Private Ryan in it's chaotic realism.

The film doesn't pack much in the way of fun or glitz, it's just different people making their way through the woods for one reason or another with a fight here and there. But I loved this, there was something just brutally serene about the whole film.

If you liked the scope, story, and overall picture in DWW you will love this movie too. The Cinematography in "The Revenant" is over the top, absolutely beautiful. The film itself can be a little bloody and graphic so if you can't handle that sort of thing then its probably not for you. True depiction of the era and the hardships of the time. I thought as with DWW it shows the Indians could be compassionate, and most of the time we as white men were the ones taking advantage of them. We were on their land and treated them badly. Everyone in the theater was glued to the screen, might have been a tad long, but so enjoyable and well written that it didn't seem all that bad. Great movie and glad to see they are making some movies in this genre again. I really enjoyed the movie and was money well spent. The only thing I could be critical of is perhaps the super human feats that the character managed at times, but you have to figure that happens on the big screen to make it more appealing!! Expand

There is some beautiful overly-long and wide takes, every shot is more impressive than the other and executed to perfection. The story is quite simple, a man versus nature guided by revenge, but like in mad max 4, a story doesn't need to be complicated to be good when it is well executed. That's what this movie does, the concept is simple, but is so well-made, cohesive and entertaining that it doesn't matter. Expand

A technically stunning drama filled with extremely gruesome but awesome special effects. Aside from that, Di Caprio's performance is stellar, and plot is strong.
Though that, I would say it isn't perfect, so that i give it a 9/10

Shot in all natural light, Alejandro Innaritu provides audiences with one of the most beautiful looking films of the year. The camera work helps to convey the harshly realistic conditions the characters must face, harsh to one scenes spectacularly terrifying extent. Leonardo DiCaprio inevitably provides an amazing performance, although matched equally by brilliant character portrayals from both Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson. The theme of revenge drives what is a superb story, a story that matches the amazing camera work and character development to create a great film. Expand
