If you liked Petite Maman or Aftersun, you'll probably like this to a similar degree. Although it is not as innovative as either of those, it is just as tender and well written with a similar tone. The child lead is wonderfully subtle and acts without ego.

I almost gave the film a nine because it lacks the ambition I usually reserve for tens, but when I look to the way this film made me feel, I think it perfectly achieves its aim.

This is a film about a neglected young girl who is sent away to live with relatives for the summer where she is loved, probably for the first time in her life. It is heartwarming, life-affirming and heart-breaking. It is a tender, beautiful film.

This intimate film has beautiful performances, supported by cinematography that is at times contemplative and watchful, but not coldly-detached or voyeuristic. The film has a bleak aesthetic but a warm directorial touch that ultimately creates a deeply emotional experience. It also has additional sociopolitical layers. I give it my highest recommendation. After seeing Aftersun where one of the main characters couldn't figure out how to be a parent, now it's the turn of a story in which parenting is the main point. What it actually means to be a parent.

The Quiet Girl is a small, intimate, slow, absorbing, heartfelt and rewarding film. It does so much with so little. A lesson many filmmakers have forgotten.

I was fascinated by it.

She's sent away to spend the summer with 2 relatives, where she's nurtured into a better outlook. It's obvious that this film has a British heritage: The performances, the direction and the emotions are all restrained yet effective. Even though it moves at a deliberate pace, it's never dull and the final few minutes are quietly touching. Expand

I grew up in Ireland during the same era and it brought so much back. Incredibly accurate depiction of that time, down to the type of biscuit placed on the table. It may feel understated to some but if you know Ireland you'll be hit with hammer blow after hammer blow of recognition and feeling. I felt like I was back in time. It especially captures the Irish psychology and way of speaking. TBH I prefer it to Banshees of Inisherin. Expand

THE GOOD: An intimate drama supported by good performances and nice photography.

THE BAD: It did not make an impact on me. Harmed by its own simplicity.

Director Colm Bairéad encloses in his images of everyday life a deep sadness but also the hope that everything can be better.

Through the experiences of a girl who discovers a new life when she is sent to live with distant relatives after being neglected by her own family, the Irish director immerses us into the bowels of his country (the movie is in Gaelic) to conceive a story of kindness and second chances to be happy.

Catherine Clinch is an incredible discovery; her voice, which seems to always be on the verge of breaking, contains absolute melancholy. The young actress feels natural and convincing from start to finish.

The film has some things in common with 'Love According to Dalva' (also recently released in Mexico). Although what happens to each main character is very different, both find in a new "family" an unprecedented world full of surprises and genuine love.

The final shot is probably the most heartbreaking in years. Unmissable.

Set in rural Ireland in 1981, this film, whose dialogue is mostly in Irish Gaelic, tells the story of a misunderstood young girl, Cáit (Catherine Clinch), whose dysfunctional family can’t be bothered with her, so she’s sent to live with her mother’s relatives for the summer until Mam delivers yet another child who’s likely to be just as unwanted as she is. While separated from her parents and siblings, however, she discovers a whole new way of living – and loving – with people whom she’s never met. And her presence in their household does much to rejuvenate their lives as well, a relationship that benefits all concerned – that is, until it’s time for Cáit to return home. The emotions stirred here are indeed palpable, but the narrative is a tad thin, requiring the picture to be embellished with plenty of gorgeous nature shots, emotive closeups and a heart-tugging background score to shore up the lean aspects of this offering. There’s certainly nothing wrong with any of that; in fact, it provides viewers with more than most other comparable releases supply. However, as an offering that earned best foreign language/international film nominations at both the BAFTA Awards and the Oscars, I expected more, a film that would truly have me more engaged and potentially on the verge of tears at any time, goals that came up a little short. It certainly raises important issues related to child neglect and emotional abuse, and it shows that change is possible where such circumstances prevail, but it just didn’t grab me that way I would anticipate a picture like this should. Enjoy it, but don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t live up to your expectations as well. Expand

One of the most deeply moving, heartfelt and beautifully heartbreaking films I've ever seen!!

"The Quiet Girl" tells the story in POV of a little girl slowly and empathetically, with the most simple narrative yet full of emotionally magnificent cinematography and masterfully well-crafted visual storytelling.

The film was purely driven by subtle emotions that was so quiet yet loud to the core of human heart, in the most simple way it could ever managed but it worked flawlessly astounding.

I can instantly say that this film is definitely an all-time classic cinema without any doubts.

I don't remember the reviews saying the movie was in Gaelic. Had to read the subtitles. The story of this girl and her life is beautifully done.

In reality a child growing up in those conditions probably wouldn't be so nice and wellbehaved, but never mind. It does show some other kids when she visits another family briefly, that was well done also; even those short moments hinted at the predatory nature of other kids, the majority I dare say. The only thing I would change is the absence of music. The makers either hate music or don't like it. Except for some background filling near the end, you only get to hear three notes on the radio before they switch it of. There is a radio in the car, and in the living room, and a tv, but its ALWAYS just voice broadcasts, or even commercials. They even had to do extra research for these adds and parts of period tv programs! Thats all good and well but there is also period music, what else is there to help you trough the day in the countryside, nature has a lot to offer(beauty in human eyes but otherwise the deathcries of animals falling prey to others...), but not decent songs. They chose adds! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a truly beautiful film. You want to step right through the movie screen and come out the other side at the Kinsella dairy farm. I love the evocation of life in the Irish countryside--the lush green meadows; a forest grove echoing with birdsong; a shaded, spring-fed well of cool, crystal water; and above it all, a pale-blue, high-summer sky. Then there's the Kinsella home with its kitchen warm and bright with the glow of reflected sunlight, where Eibhlin and Cait tend to their daily chores together. This is a home without screens--not even on the windows--where the only handheld devices are potato peelers and galvanized zinc pails.

Some critics have called "The Quiet Girl" a simple story simply told, but the film does hold complexities. You have the contrast between Cait's fractious parents and neglectful family home, and the Kinsellas' loving marriage and caring, comfortable dwelling, yet Cait will prove to be more at risk at the latter household than the former.

There is also the theme of secrets which runs through the film, the secret of the Kinsellas' dead son which Cait only learns from a nosey neighbour who, in turn, interrogates Cait to find out secrets about the Kinsellas. When Sean and Eibhlin return Cait to her parents, all three agree to keep secret Cait's near-death experience at the well.

The last moments of the film found me sitting misty-eyed in the dark, but a happy ending leaving Cait with the Kinsellas would have seemed contrived and unconvincing. As it is, Cait returns home mentally and emotionally fortified by the life lessons in grief and joy she has learned from the Kinsellas and the other adults she has come to know over the preceding summer. And above all, she knows that she is loved.

In Carrie Keegan's story, "Foster", she has her little girl say of her improved reading: "It was like learning to ride a bike; I felt myself taking off, the freedom of going places I couldn't have gone before, and it was easy." It's a minor point, but I wish the film had highlighted Cait's burgeoning love of reading a little more. Incidentally, my two adult daughters still have their copy of the same 1920s vintage edition of "Heidi" that we see Cait reading in the film.
