Okay guys, come on. It wasn't that bad. In fact, it was quite enjoyable. I mean, it wasn't the best movie this summer. By ANY stretch of the imagination, but it was, in my opinion, a good movie. Very disturbing, but a delectable treat.

At its core this is a morally reprehensible and despicable premise pandering to the baser instincts of human nature, which we can only hope remains a filmic fantasy. As a movie, fans of the horror and thriller genres will be in their element. Directed with cold efficiency, atmospherically photographed and grippingly edited the film makes many social political statements along the way. Surprisingly the story strands come together fairly well and generally make for credible viewing. However, a scene in which the protagonists take sanctuary in a house of a friend strikes a definite false note and is risible in its ridiculousness.
The gulf between rich and poor is a prominent theme as is the corruption of governments and politicians. Also, one sequence takes us directly into 'Hostel' territory. There are a couple of jumpy moments along the way and if the film ever so slightly out stays its welcome it still has a satisfying ending of suitably ironic redemption.

I thought it was an original concept and even though it was a home invasion thriller it had many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat! With It's amusing acting from It's brilliant (and unique cast) and a story that actually brings "The Purge" to a greater height, The Purge: Anarchy finds James DeMonaco creating a sequel that succeeds as a definite improvement over the original.

Definitely a better picture in comparison with the first Purge movie! It has an ok characters, an interesting plot with well done ending! Its flaws aren't substantial enough to bring it down

“Just remember all the good the purge does.”

Some purge for money, some purge for revenge, and some just purge for the fun of it. Whatever it is one is purging for, one can’t help but be drawn to this crazy and maniacally satisfying cinematic story concept.

Stock brokers hang from the front doors of banks, people are killed for being caught cheating on their spouses, and those with repressed feelings are all questioned as to why they are out on the one night of the year where all crime, including murder, is legal in 2023 America.

The Purge: Anarchy is story-telling brilliance. Outdoing its predecessor in narrative, character building and spectacle, the sequel reveals the many questions audience members were thinking during The Purge. Such questions include; what happens to people who are caught outside unwillingly on the streets on the scariest ‘holiday’ in America, what happens to the people who cannot afford to protect themselves the same way the rich can, and just how far are good people willing to go for vengeance?

Unlike the original Purge, director/writer James DeMonaco decides to do what every good director would have done with a story idea like this, and that is multiple-character narratives that eventually intersect.

As the evening is coming to an end and the 12 Hour Purge period begins, the world that DeMonaco created does not seem as far away from our own as we are introduced to an array of different relatable characters. Single-mother Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and her daughter Cali (Zoë Soul) along with her ailing father Rico (John Beasley) are a hard working family. Eva, who works as a waitress at a local diner in the projects of Los Angeles, asks her boss for a raise on the eve of the Sixth Annual Purge that will help with her father’s piling medical bills. Denied, Eva makes her way back home to lock-down her little apartment with very little means of security. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) are having their own problems in their relationship, as well as being following by a gang of anxious masked maniacs who follow them upon learning that their car is stalled on the side of the road due to ‘accidental’ mechanical problems. Both pairs of people, unprepared and scared of participating in the purge, try to survive the night on their own, until they luckily stumble across the Sergeant (Frank Grillo), a man who is justifying his night by killing the man who took his son away from him.

Hours before the annual commencement, people flood the streets, searching for last minute ‘protection’ from their partners, their bosses, their disgruntled family members or friends and say goodbye with the words, “stay safe”. They treat the purge as a holiday; some as a patriotic day of cleansing, others as a religious right of passage. Some call it “releasing the beast”, others refer to it as “enjoying the cleanse”, but one thing becomes clear, it reminds us of the crazy times of the year where people are uninterested in your feelings or concerns, a time that could be compared to the holidays, where the ‘dog-eat-dog’ attitude of people becomes ever more apparent. Purging could easily be compared to practically every holiday we experience where people are animals on the road and on the streets, but perfectly behaved citizens in their homes and within the walls of church halls and religious centres and perfectly adequate images in social settings.

I believe DeMonaco has crafted a story idea and made a film that is a lot deeper and more complex than people would like to admit. After all, the film is a free-for-all excuse to have people watch just exactly what people are thinking of doing to others that hurt them, without ever getting their hands dirty. Anarchy really goes with the idea of what people would actually do if that little thought in their head of killing their boss, could actually be materialized in the real world, without any consequences.

In addition, Anarchy shows the very faint hints of social, racial and economic inequality that is plaguing DeMonaco’s America of the future. Unemployment is less than 5% and poverty is at 1%, and the purge is to thank for this tremendous social statistic, yet, the rich hide and buy their way to an American tradition of cleaning through their heavily-secured houses while the poor help deliver homeless people, hostages found on the street and ‘martyrs’ who offer up their bodies as a bloddy canvas for rich families while their next of kin receive momentous amounts of money. In any direction you put it, the ones who suffer the most are the poor and lower class, and Anarchy spends most of its time showing this obvious and super disturbing truth of an American society whose idea of ‘cleansing’ is no different than the idea Adolf Hitler had in the 1930′s.

By drawing the action onto the streets and through a range of environs, the sequel covers most of the wasted potential of its predecessor. Though a horror, Anarchy avoids tacky, dull torture porn and instead relies upon its multitude of creative villains, superb slow-motion camera pans, tense atmosphere and sudden shocks to make the audience jump.
The film’s political message is thinly-veiled: references to the (new) Founding Fathers, love of guns, religion and the connection between these abound. On the streets villains brazenly “open carry” while the ultimate villains hunt their “purges” in the safety of their mansions.
Realism does take second place in favour of grotesque caricatures of American gun culture, but this is hardly grounds for criticism of a horror film.
The film does have its problems: there is the odd cringe-worthy forced line and there are some noticeable loose-ends, but these do little to upset the film’s neat balance between entertaining thrill and intelligent parody.

I just finished watching it and I will first say that I loved the first movie a lot but the sequel kicked everything into gear 100% more then the original. The story was better it focused on five individuals coming together to survive the night and being centered on Frank Grillo as "Sergeant". The action was Top-Notch with Tons and Tons of violence which I absolutely love. I must add that them taking the movie to the streets did it wonders and I don't ever jump in movies but there were one or two jump scares. The acting was very good but obviously the star was Frank Grillo who kicked Ass in acting and just being Awesome. I will say overall that this is a must see movie especially if you liked or loved the original then go see it Immediately and you will not be disappointed I promise you that. The best horror/thriller movie I have seen in a long long while. Expand

The Purge: Anarchy focuses on 5 characters. The first two are a couple named Shane and Liz who are driving to one of their sister's house in Los Angeles to wait out the Purge when their car is sabotaged and breaks down in the downtown area. Meanwhile, police sergeant Leo Barnes goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son. The last two are a mother and daughter, Eva and Cali, who are rescued by Leo after a group of men breaks into their house and attempts to kidnap them. The five people meet up and attempt to survive the night together. The concept of this movie is great, meanwhile the movie itself doesn't execute it as well as it should. The plot is pretty interesting including a lot more thrill than the first movie. The people purging are more exciting and although it doesn't give a lasting scare, this movie still does have some good jump scares. If you liked the first Purge movie or thought it was okay you will enjoy this movie. Don't expect too much, but the concept and the plot of this movie are very interesting to watch. Expand

This sequel takes the great concept of the first movie, the annual "purge" where all crime is legal for 12 hours, and uses it to bring unique, crazy, and occasionally tense scenarios. It's political and social commentary is still lacking, but overall there's still enough fun here to make it worth a watch.

Watching a group of people trying to survive unprepared during a time when psychos are everywhere is quite entertaining. Even better is that the characters you will follow are much more intelligent than the ones from the first movie. I actually found myself wanting to see most of them make it through the night. The inventive scenarios and constant threat of danger kept me entertained. Even though it fails to deliver any fear it provides plenty of thrills.

The themes that are behind the movie though could still use some work. It's political/social themes are so simple and presented in such a heavy-handed manner that it just comes off as dumb. The way the movie has it's fractions limited to only one racial group is ignorant. All the rich purgers and government agents are white, all the anti-purge revolutionaries are black, and various groups of psycho purgers are all comprised of only one ethnic/racial group united. Honestly I think this series should quit trying to say something deep and strictly focus on the craziness of it all, because every time it tries it just ends up making the people behind making the movie look stupid.

It does manage to be a lot better than the first by delivering on some of the promise the whole "Purge" setting that the first just failed to do. There are still some issues when it tries to come off as more intelligent than it actually is, but overall the increased sense of anarchy makes it still worth a watch. Here's hoping that the next "Purge" ditches it's political and social commentary altogether and just focuses more on the craziness like this one did. It's what makes it work.

I was so excited to see the film, unfortunately it amounted to little more than a slasher movie. The story had all the potential in the world, but they really didn't go into it, they just wanted to show off the violence and hatred people had towards one another. I was hoping they would correct this in the sequel and boy did they ever! Anarchy isn't about some family hunkered down in their home, fighting off attackers. In the second installment of the Purge, we learn a lot more about it. The pro and anti-purge factions that exist, the professional companies that make a fortune off that one night, the way the rich purge, and the main story which centers around what happens on the streets when two families are trapped outside on purge night. Two families are easy pickings until they find Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), a man on a mission that he can only complete on Purge night. Barnes however is a man of conscience and won't complete his mission until he begrudgingly gets the families to safety, which means a wild trek through the city. The Purge: Anarchy is a wild ride through a city of ordinary people turned into killers, with home made weapons, booby-traps, and pure anarchy, just as the title promises. If you're looking for action and violence, there are a million places to turn, that's not what the appeal of this movie is. It's the idea, that crime virtually is nonexistent, except for this one night, where society turns on each other. Where almost everyone's craziest fantasy becomes reality and just how some people react. What will each character turn into when they are allowed to do whatever they want? How does society feel about this law and is the benefit worth the cost? This story has just so many directions it can go in, that why I'm not surprised to hear they're working on a fourth film. The Purge series may just be a series of action/slasher films, but this one idea puts a whole new spin on them and makes you see things through a whole different set of eyes and I for one think it's ingenious. Why I gave The Purge: Anarchy a 10.

Blumhouse Studios has successfully started a new franchise with the original Purge. In this suspenseful grimdark and edgy sequel director James Demonaco paints an America tapping into its primal instincts for one night of survival of the fittest.

This is a great piece of alternative history fiction. I would put it right up there with other popular names in the genre such as Fatherland, The Watchmen and even Hunger Games.

I am not going to put any spoilers in this review, I am just going to recommend this movie for numerous reasons.

1) It's different and pushes certain social-economic topics in our face that we, as Americans refuse to see. The treatment of the poor, the privilege of the rich and how the government caters to one while punishing another.

2) Great concept that dates back to an old short story called The Lottery and expands it on a nationwide scale.

3) The suspense was compounded by great music that helped build an eerie and foreboding atmosphere. Remember old John Carpenter movies? Same aspect.

4) Great acting, I didn't have to get emotionally attached to anyone, they all played their parts accordingly, making the tension even more believable.

5) Cinematography was very good as well. A little darker than I would have liked it, but it is fitting for the content.

6) The violence is not too graphic. You can see worse on cable television. It's not gratuitous at all. Which it could have been, little dissapointed about that. I have to commend the studio on not making this a torture movie.

There are some deeper issues touched on in The Purge: Anarchy, you just have to look a little bit beyond the darkness to see them. Infidelity, trust, revenge, poverty, forgiveness and the bourgeois are all present. If you can get past the fear and suspense you will see how the studio wove them into the story.

Yeah, I know that there are a lot of movies out now vying for your $30-50 date night or if your out with your boys, you matinee night. I would recommend this to horror fans, suckers suspense, violence thrillseekers and anyone else who wants to watch the birth of a new franchise.

Thank your for suffering through my 2000 word dissertation, I felt this movie deserved it. And for the TL:DR crowd. It's good. John Carpenter style of good.

I will leave you off with a prediction of the future. Coming soon to a theater near you: The Purge: Rebellion.

It took me a year to finally get around to this, but I'm glad I did. The Purge: Anarchy is an action horror film and a sequel to 2013's The Purge. Both films take place in the near future where the US government sanctions an annual 12-hour period where all emergency services are suspended and all crime, including murder, is legal. While the premise itself is completely unrealistic and stupid, it is extremely interesting and original. The first Purge takes place in 2022 and only took place within one house that was being invaded by some purgers. It was a major letdown for some, but it was incredibly entertaining for me. The sequel takes place a year later and is really the Purge movie everyone had hoped for. It tells of five people who are simply trying to survive the night on the streets of LA during the Purge. The Purge: Anarchy rights most of the wrongs of the original Purge and doesn't mask itself by being a home invasion thriller or revenge flick. Anarchy is definitely its own unique movie. It does introduce some new ideas to the Purge story. It shows that not everyone purges just because they want to; some do it for revenge and some do it just to stay alive. The film also shows what the richest people would do. They hold auctions where poor people are auctioned off to upper-class purgers, and the scene showing this is probably the most interesting scene in the movie. Not only does The Purge: Anarchy show off some well-executed ideas, it's also an incredibly thrilling and entertaining movie from start to finish. What made this movie so fun to watch was that each character had their own unique struggles and reasons for being out in the Purge, and there was some great acting from the entire cast to make them even more interesting and real. The Purge: Anarchy proves a significant step up from the original film, and it's the perfect summer thriller film that I would recommend to almost anyone. Expand

Instead of keeping the film contained to one house like the first one did, it took us to the streets during purge night following 5 characters. Although I do have some problems with this movie I would say it is a massive improvement over the first one. The biggest problem I have with the movie is the pacing of action and the acting at times, which can be wooden and cringe worthy in places, the writing could have been better but it isn't horrible although I do think the writer completely missed the mark on the 'horror' genre here jump scares do not make a horror movie. in summery i would say if you have thought about watching The Purge Anarchy then it is a good action movie with some jump scares thrown in the mix. The action part and suspense and all that was really good and the movie was exciting to watch throughout, plus this one was better than the first one, but anyway, some of the ideas or what happenned there at some parts felt so dumb or so unrealistic that it made it harder to watch it without laughing etc at some moments. Anyway, if you watched first one and thought it was ok, then you will like this one more and will actually enjoy it, if you hated the first one, then these Purge series are not for you. If you were not hating or liking first movie, then give this one a chance so that you know where you stand. Expand

Definitely a lot more fleshed out than the first. I was able to get quite attached to the characters and though the story was a bit slow at times the second half really gets going. It has a very mad max feel as if for 12 hours the country falls into an apocalypse. In the end though if you can't role with the silly premise than it won't be enjoyable and there's quite a bit of brutality to it so it's only going to appeal to a niche audience. (The Fight Club kind of audience). Expand

Seriously, right till the end you dont know who will survive and who not ! What makes truly great movie is not just to build up some character you love and care about and then at least half of them die. So many directors go after this formula, this so many times lived cliche - first story build up and then some monster or serial killer or supernatural entity slowly kill one after another, but this is so boring cliche and you dont really care about those characters, their story is plastic and they are plastic, so they die, big deal. My skin got so thick after watching so many horror movies over years that I dont care any more ! But in Purge Anarchy we have character that are not plastic,, they are real, they have soul and they care for others not just for themselves ! So real quality of movie is not to kill everyone up there, but how powerful is factor of unpredictable, if this is done good, doesnt matter if someone dies or not, the catch is in this; you just dont know ! And in Purge Anarchy factor of unpredictable is so much high, right until last minute of movie, death is there lurking just around the corner, right until the very last minute of purge ! Who cares about movie, if you know who will get killed after watching movie for 20 min.! But if you really dont know what will happen, then its really worth watching. What is more interesting, seeing some idiots in friday the 13th and you know exactly who will die and they are not important ! But if someone is intelligent and sensitive as all main characters in Purge 2 surely are, then you care for them, and if you really dont know if they will make it or not, until the end then thats it, thats all that is needed for great movie. And Purge Anarchy has it, one of best movies in last 2 years I gor pleasure to watch !

Better Than The First
With a good amount of tension and suspense, Anarchy is an improvement over it's mediocre predecessor.

This movie improves upon the original by exploring its idea way more. It has more action, more tension, and more excitement. It also features a kick ass performance from Frank Grillo who actually is a little bit developed unlike the rest of the cast.

A decent thriller, nicely shot. Has a few twists and turns, uses the concept well.
