It takes awhile to get going, but the tricked out/heady ending is a strong payoff. Initially I was confused when the credits began to roll, but after a disecting post screening conversation, it all came together. Not nearly as tight as Momento.. tends to wander a little bit. Some fine acting and some interesting period pieces. The characters though are a little too promiscuous and shifting to hold our attention for long, they are like ciphers...maybe Not nearly as tight as Momento.. tends to wander a little bit. Quite a wonderful film ride, some may think this is a slow movie thats boring and pointless and with "plot holes" or whatever. I am not one of them. A true masterpiece. its one of my favorite movies. the scores giving to it by the critics don't do it justice. the ending is the best ending to any movie I have seen.

I went back a second time to see this one. The plot was that good. Every part of the production was very well done, from sets to the cinematography and every actor and line. I've seen most of the highly acclaimed films this year, and I went back a second time to see this one. The plot was that good. Rewatching this makes it pretty clear what Nolan's primary focus is in storytelling (if it wasn't obvious before) - perspective and the subjective nature of it. There are metaphors galore in this (how could there not be in a film about subjectivity and obsession) but it struck me this time how convenient the story is. It moves constantly and forcefully forward, revealing twists all the way, daring you to try and outguess it, so at first it's easy to miss on the plot contrivances and somewhat simple nature of it all. But I'm also not sure how much that matters. The film works, it really does, even when it's less than artful.… Expand

It took two viewings for me to fully appreciate The Prestige. I loved it the first time, but mostly because of the questions it left me with. I loved it the first time, but mostly because of the questions it left me with. The second time it just clicked and stirred up so many ideas and thoughts, I felt like I actually had witnessed something magical. There is so much going on in this movie, at times you lose yourself. The beauty of the film is in the intricacies of the plot. When asked at the start of the film, "Are you watching closely?" I only thought I was.

There are three parts to a magic trick. It begins with The Pledge. This establishes the illusion to be performed. Next comes the Turn. The Turn is the heart of any magic trick and initiates the perversion of reality. But actually doing the trick only prefaces undoing it. This part is called The Prestige. The title of the film is The Prestige for three reasons. The first involves rival magicians deadly pursuit of each other's Prestige. The second deals with the significance of consequence. Algiers and Borden never seem to learn they are responsible for their actions. Finally, The Prestige is aptly titled because it's about the pay off and quite literally the "undoing" of certain elements that made up the majority of the film. It is about refuting the false notions and suppositions audiences might cling to when watching.

Dueling magicians provide an intriguing stage to explore the competitive nature of man. On the surface, Algiers(Jackman) and Borden(Bale) seem well intentioned. Each wants a family, home and success as a magician. However, the basest characteristics of any type of performer are suspect in this film. Truth seems an empty word to all who speak it. Not one character in the film can be trusted. It sets up an interesting predicament as a viewer used to bonding with a usual protagonist. These characters endure countless pains and just when you start to care, they get back up and cause even more pain. The beautiful, horrible cycle within The Prestige reminds me of Nolan's Memento. Vengeance can be seductive; so much so, that the things each character thought they wanted become irrelevant.

Director, Christopher Nolan, dissects the boundaries man claims to put on himself. How far are we willing to go for success? Are we willing to get our hands dirty? What are we willing to sacrifice? The answers to these questions for Borden and Algiers are played out during the film, but they resonate past the narrative. Morality can't be part of a magician's repertoire because risk and death are essential to winning an audience. Nolan re-imagines death in this film. It is likened to the limits of human will. The "undoing" of death, or Prestige, comes at a high price. Our capacity to harm or love ourselves and others is unrestrained. Life is The Pledge, death is The Turn and then comes The Prestige.… Expand

Christopher Nolan never seizes to impress me, the magicians have nothing on this mans mind! I thought that the film was very good, I am a big fan of christian bale anyway so the fact that he was in this film was a must watch for me.

The narrative showed that bitterness and rivalry ultimately gets you nowhere in the end.throughout the film i felt that hugh jackmans character was the more charming and innocent out of the two of them however as the plot began to unravel at the end i did feel deep sympathy for christian bales character. that soon goes away though when the twist is revieled. which is a amazing twist non the less of all his other twists and turns in all his other films.
I recommend this film 10/10… Expand

great movie, the relationship between the two protagonists from good friends to sworn rivals is portrayed amazingly. although the ending was a little too sci-fi at the end for my taste, it doesn't spoil the rest of the movie. I think it's worth pointing out that this film is rather more intelligent than complicated. It showed this by hooking you in via the first few minutes with the scenario and then explaining in depth about it from different perspectives. That's one of the first films I've ever seen do that and it remained intriguing throughout - and the end! That was probably the best ending I've ever seen! There was no loose ends, but with what the film gave you, it left you awe-inspired and shocked - who was who and what really went on? I was fascinated by the psychological aspects - it helped unearth more of the more disturbing characteristics of humanity - obsession and revenge. When you look at it, the magician's theme reflected these secrecies and psychological tricks that were employed. The actors were amazing - I didn't think Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale would star in a film together, but who cares, they were a perfect pair! It's just like Batman versus Wolverine but with magic. Despite that, the science alongside magic was a bit interfering as I was still more interested in finding out the surprise over surprise that continued to entertain me. Try not to big it up too much, Mr Nolan, you're brilliant at directing, but just try not to make it appear too big before it becomes a confusing, bloated mess.… Expand

While I enjoyed what I was seeing, the story just twisted and turned in ways I couldn't really follow. I know I loved watching it, but afterwards I was still like what the hell? The ending was the most confusing part, not real sure what happened there, maybe one day I'll get it. This film had the star power, one of Hollywood's best directors, and a unique story, but it's going to be hard for a lot of people to follow. I've seen 1000's of films, and it's not often that I get to say, I didn't really get it, especially with something I enjoyed, but I guess Christopher Nolan will do that to ya!… Expand

This truly is the best film I've seen since Inception and I truly wonder why I have not heard more people going on about this film. Could it be too complicated for most audiences? I really hope that is not the case because the film is too extraordinarily awesome to go unseen. The only reason I didn't rate the film a 10 out of 10 is due to the complicated nature of the film. If it had been easier to understand, like Inception, which isn't all that easy, I would have given it that 10. At the same time, if the film was any simpler I don't know if it would be as mind blowing as it is. Thank you Mr. Nolan for another original and unusually fantastic ride! The Prestige was a well done and entertaining movie. Both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman did a great job in their respective roles and even David Bowie did a good job playing Nikola Tesla. We have seen several bigger, better and more ambitious films by Nolan by now, so this one about two magicians who become enemies pales in comparison. It has all the great elements present in Nolan´s films though. Very good acting, interesting story and quality. With an ending that always offers an enjoyable and intelligent pay-off. The things lacking in this occasion are the phenomenal score present in most of the other Nolan films and also, although this is probably a question of personal preferences, the fascinating topic. Space, how our mind works, etc are way more exciting than magicians, as proved by the stunning Inception, Interstellar or The Dark Knight films.… Expand

i spent about 15 minutes just thinking after the movie ended this is just one of the movies that remind you how christopher nolan a true genies.

The Prestige is a mysterious, eye-poping Nolan-classic that got magical and rememberable moments that truly gives your brain something to work with. Nolan really is a true, and of course ambitious director/writer, that got the courage to do something different.

The structure in The Prestige is similar to Memento, but still a bit less confusing. But it's still a non-linear movie and I really admire that! There're a lot of things in The Prestige I would love to talk about, because it really is a stunning movie, and it have over the years become one of my all time favorites. It's so ambitious, mind-bending and overall awesome! This is a movie that's up for discussion, over what it's really about and what REALLY did happen in it. I don't want to spoil anything but there's a lot of mind-bending in this one, especially after the first time you watch it. I really recommend to check this movie out, because it got so much to tell, especially when it comes to obsession, basic life and of course; "magic".

One of the greatest aspect with the director/writer C. Nolan is that he makes movies that's ambitious and that's bigger in every scale. Just look at Memento; he successfully combined the main character and his dysfunction to make new memories, to the whole movie. It's the same with The Prestige; the whole movie is a magic trick! Thats how incredible Nolan is! Great aspects with this movie are of course flawless performance's by Michael Cane, Christian Bale and of course Hugh Jackman, but also a high amount of unique moments that we haven't seen before and of course the magical ending! I also love that the movie is so much more than a basic classic one, it feels like a real trick, a real show with a real artist performing on stage. It even feels like I'm sitting in the audience, watching closely on the tricks. That's definitely a wow-thing with The Prestige! I also feel greatly entertained every time I watch it, because there're hints throughout the whole movie about what REALLY happen near the end. One smaller negative aspect might be the soundtrack, it's not by Hans Zimmer (surprisingly), and it doesn't feel that epic as it could have been.

The Prestige was a great movie the first time, but it wasn't until my second or third that I really understood that this really is one of the greatest ever made. In my eyes is it even greater than Inception and Memento, and just perfect. Everything from the dialogs to the acting is stunning, even though the soundtrack could have been better and that the trailers did spoil one specific part, so don't watch them! Watch the movie instead, because it's freaking incredible! This is a classic work from our beloved director/writer Christopher Nolan, he gives us these ambitious mind-bending movies of art that impresses everybody. I wonder how he does it, but remember; "the secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything."

"Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled."

This is what I wrote while watching this movie, (I wrote it down about 5 minutes from the end) and I was going submit it as my review; until I saw the last three seconds of the movie. My rating has jumped to 8/10. I shall say no more, except that the greatest trick Nolan pulled on me was almost making me believe he had made a very predictable and dull movie. But, he continues to amaze me, as 3 seconds of a movie can make such a difference.… Expand

Along with Memento, this is one of the two best films by Chris Nolan. Like Memento, you have to watch it more than once to get the whole story, but compared with Memento this film is more thought provoking: 1. there are many little details in the story you might not notice until you really look for it, 2. characters are more interesting, 3. everyone can interpret the story differently, and 4. the title actually fits the whole film perfectly and you have to probably watch it three times to find out how you didn't realise this before.

This film also made me appreciate Jack Hughman much more, by the way. I always thought he was overrated, but this film changed my view.… Expand

It seems that in most Nolan's film, the ending scene always appears at the opening but his narrative style however manages to make audiences to forget that regardless on the complexity of the content he tries to confuse us, it is actually a straightforward plot with the key answers already revealed indirectly at the first scene. The performances of Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are extremely outstanding, thanks to the character developments that allow them to be both the antagonist and protagonist at the same time due to their eagerness for glory that they have eroded not only the morality of this magical great art, but to sacrifice their own lives and the one they love. The duality is a brilliant central concept of the film extracted in two different ways on both leads, it never stops engaging but to challenge the mindset of the viewers with several dark twisted plots and ambiguity. Although with a bit of weaker scores (due to no Hans Zimmer), Nolan's smart piece of magical art is interesting to stress that the trick of victory comes only when a person overlook and think that he has already won the rival.… Expand

As said in my review for his masterpiece 'Memento', Christopher Nolan has always struck me as a very talented film-maker, and most of his films are ones that have impressed me a lot. Even weaker efforts, where his ambition can get in the way, have a good deal to admire. His films are all impeccably crafted technically, and often entertaining and thought-provoking, also knowing how to get good performances out of talented casts.

'The Prestige' is not quite perfect, but is still very good and one of Nolan's better films. To me actually it was close to outstanding, which makes my issues with the denouement even more frustrating. And it is the denouement that's 'The Prestige's' biggest problem, being over-baked and with one twist too many, the second of which being a convoluted cop-out and like the other twists before the denouement didn't happen.

Was also, to a lesser extent, expecting more from David Julyan's music score, having done such a great job with the score for 'Memento'. His score for 'The Prestige' works within the film and has a mystical and dread quality, but it is not one of those scores that is listenable or even re-listenable as music on its own, lacking the cleverness and mood and thematic complexities of his work for 'Memento' and being somewhat too simplistic to be entirely memorable.

However, 'The Prestige' looks wonderful. The cinematography is slick and the production values in general are suitably gritty and audacious, complete with gorgeously evocative Victorian period production and costume design. Once again, Nolan directs impeccably, not letting his ambition get in the way of the storytelling, while the script is smart, thought-provoking and intricate without trying too hard and treating the audience with respect. The pacing is taut while deliberate, and while the film is long there is enough to keep one riveted.

The story for 'The Prestige' is quite the fascinating tale, with an incredible period and darkly magical atmosphere and twists and turns peppered throughout but done in a way that the storytelling is coherent and taken with sincere seriousness while not coming across as emotionally cold.

Fine acting all round, with a charmingly flamboyant Hugh Jackman and intensely charismatic Christian Bale perfectly cast and playing off against other wonderfully. Michael Caine brings class and dignity to his role, and seeing how he altered his voice and posture for it it was clear he was right in the zone. Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo and Scarlett Johansson also do well, as does surprisingly David Bowie in an unlikely role. Andy Serkis is similarly memorable.

Overall, imperfect film but also a fascinating one, flaws and all it is for me one of Nolan's better films. 8/10 Bethany Cox.… Expand

The Prestige

Prestige is probably the most shrewdest adaptation that nothing but serves the "wow" factor on our face, it feels plastered. Adapted from Christopher Priest's novel of the same name, by the Nolan brothers, this remains about a magic in that very sense. That you are hooked and wowed at the end of the show, till it's big reveal. The film is about a two friends-turned-rival magicians who loses themselves and their loved ones in order to prove the superiority over each other.

And the film walks for that unsaid scoreboard mentality for the most part of the film. Grabbing points by excelling or cheating, this mano-y-mano aspect of the storyline deteriorates very quickly when bigger themes like art, science, philosophy and ethics dive in. The clash between art and science is what fascinated me the most, especially after the film started accounting in, the infamous feud between Tesla and Edison.

Often in a film that deals with parallel characters going awry and coming home, the film cheapens its content in latter stages by manipulating the audience emotionally. But the film dodges this bullet by wisely never revealing the hand that helps us in surviving this film. Empathy is never installed forcibly and even when for a brief period in its last act, you feel the film going soft on the characters, it actually turns the tables by revealing information that is always said to be hidden and not reversing the roles of any elements. This underrated genius often goes unmentioned, but it requires a closer and a second look. Nolan's film's malleability has been arctic over the ages. Not stiff, nor cold, but moody. To a degree that you will bow down to its celebratory behavior and PG-13 language. Something you don't see nowadays.… Expand

Films such as Memento, Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Night and Dunkirk reaffirm him as one of the best directors and writters in Hollywood. However, this is probably his most underrated work. The plot of this film is so consistent and brilliant that keeps you thinking about it for some days. Furthermore, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and David Bowie are terrific in this film.… Expand

I love Christian bale, who makes one of his finest performances here (I can't decide if this is his best performance or the one in American Psycho). I love how they show you how some of the illusions are performed and the trick STILL feel like true magic.

And no, I'm not forgetting the other actors. The performances are all wonderful. Hugh Jackman is never bad in anything he is in, and The Prestige is no exception. I also love the small part David Bowie plays in the movie - a shame we didn't get to see more of him on the silver screen before his passing.

This is no action movie filled with magic trick, like the equally brilliant Now You See Me. No, The Prestige is a mystery film, and a great one at that. The thrills of this film are contained within the magic, the competition between two illusionist in love. The storytelling has a nice flow to it, and the movie feels compelling from the beginning to the end. And just when you think you've figured it all out, the Nolan brothers throw in a final twist and shake it all up again! It makes the entire film itself feel like one, massive magic trick.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an interesting movie that gives you a bit of insight into the world of magic and illusions, in the late 1800s. It does well as a period drama and it is quite intriguing, uncovering the murkier side of magic, with some strange but fascinating characters.

The movie teaches you that its not the trick of seemingly making something disappear but rather tha trick of making it re-appear, that truly captivates and endears the audience. This is what they call 'the prestige', hence the movie title.

There is quite a mystical aspect to the movie, which kept me interested to see the movie through to the end. There is alot of mystery involved and you get a real feel of how obsessed such magicians were back then, at a time when they were at the top of their game and huge audiences flocked to see such acts, with a constant strive to come up with more spectacular illusions to keep such audiences amazed and amused and it obviously touches on what consequences can occur, when such people become so obsessed with this and try to out-do their competitors, with more and more riskier tricks.

The performances from Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, among others, are all good and mixed with the pretty captivating special effects, it makes it a pretty good movie.

This is an itneresting movie, with a real twist at the end that certainly I was not expecting.

It is quite sinister and sad in a sense, exploring the darker side of the publics interest in magic and illusions at that time (late 1800s and early 1900s) and showing what dark things such an obsession with this can lead to and bring.

This movie is fairly complex, story wise, but its interesting enough, at least im not usually one for period dramas but did find this interesting enough to watch through to the end.

If the story interests you, then you should definitely check it out, though be sure to pay attention to it, to be able to follow the story properly. Recommended.… Expand

Besides that, the final twist in the end is really what summarizes the movie: unpredictable and just a great movie. The cloning device the controversial part of this otherwise Oscar-worthy movie. The plot is not simple, I will try to resume it : Two young apprentice wizards, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, are taught and tutored by Cutter, an illusionist engineer and former wizard, but during a number where a woman is tied up and placed in a glass case full of water, something goes wrong. and Angier will blame his friend for what happened, trying to take revenge. Thus begins a cruel game between the two men about who is the best and the rivalry will gradually turn into obsession.
Here Nolan stages a great direction, with tight and precise camera movements, fantastic shots and also the script which is usually one of his weak points turns out to be solid. Fantastic Bowie in the role of Tesla, brilliant even to have thought so. From start to finish it all comes together.… Expand

An excellent film, delighted with the performances of Jackman, Bale, Johansson and Caine. It keeps you on edge until the last second. Chris Nolan may not be my favorite director, but it must be said that he never disappoints.
