I'm giving this movie a 5, because although it is quite weak, it's not by any means terrible. Kirsten Dunst can't really be in terrible movies.

The movie is Terrence Mallick lite; lots of sweeping cinematograph and introspection. The main character's personal conflict is so obvious that you'll guess it within a couple of minutes and in 2023, it's in no way original or daring.

This movie behaves like it's a classic, but it just isn't. Good effort, but try harder.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, one doesn't know where to start. The film has a potential to be great, but constantly falls short. The characters and their motivations are not convincing at all. For instance, i dont believe that anyone's issues with in-laws or their stepfamily can amount to their killing each other silently.
Phil's motives are not well-established for us to believe his actions toward Rose, Rose is not well established to become a drinker, Peter's motives not clear to become a murderer for the sake of his mom. I understand he is capable of killing a rabbit, but it's not enough.
Some lazy symbolism too, like carrot, as phallus or under the tree as a place of subconscious . Much less than convincing

What a beautifully odd, slow, dirty, character exploration, atypical western. Every shot here sia like a painting, the acting is terrific by all the members of the cast and Jane Campion's directing here is at his best. McPhee is so good and Cumberbatch is great shape. The choice of the sound is perfect here as well as the cinematography, the score (Johnny Greenwood is easily the best musician in the world) and the editing too. Every shot here is functional to the next, this is amovie that talks mpre with images and less with words. You have to pay attention to every shot in this movie because each of them just brings you to a crucial point of the movie since this movie is so visually potent. I never went mad for Jane Campion but she surprised me this time. The atmosphere is so thrilling and suspenseful and this movie gets better vision after vision. The Power of the Dog is a masterpiece. Great Book, poor film.

I watched film and only then I've read the book. So I can understand why this film has so high rating. So I want to advice read book firstly if you want feel full experience.

Story and directing. I really don't like that in film they cut a lot of explanation about Peter, Rouse, George. In film we can see mainly Phill, but to understand everything you need to understand other characters why and what they did. And it's the biggest minus of this film. Directing is good but some scenes doesn't match whole picture.

Acting. I like only Camberbetch's acting in this film and Cristen Dunst. Other actors are good but their characters are bad written in screenplay.

Music, postproduction, colors, costumes are great I like them. I feel the atmosphere of the book.

All in all this film is overrated. You have to read book first and if you like the book you can enjoy film.

This movie, aside ratings/ nominations, is one of the worst ever.
It is incomplete, in clarity of message, lacks innovation, is incomprehensible, and miscasts. It has interesting ideas, and if the flow were clearer, I’d just pass it as one I didn’t see as worthwhile, but this isn’t there.
It must be the high end actors and high quality team, production, etc, with an attempt at a message; I appreciate that it has given a base to compare critics (and the acadamys) ability to critique (though good choice with CODA).

It's amazing anybody agreed to fund another boring Jane Campion movie - what is her obsession with pianos!? Everybody overacted except "Bronco Henry", a too-friendly uncle represented by a shrine featuring his saddle. The plot was unintentionally funny because it was so absurd. The music score sounded like a bunch of novice musicians all playing different songs. However, these are the kind of movies that "critics" love because it checks all their PC boxes. I suspect the vast majority of 5-star "audience" ratings came from those who funded or worked on the movie. You can always tell rating manipulations when there is an overwhelming number of truthful 1-star reviews. Rating sites need to do a better job filtering out these economically biased ratings. Expand

This film is not powerful or progressive. Cumberbatch is miscast and obnoxious with his phony western accent, ridiculous chap fetish and one-dimensional meanness. Campion is a narcissist who can't even accept an award without cluelessly dismissing the accomplishments of greater black women who had to overcome so much more than a critic's darling like Campion can even imagine. Sam Elliott is not a homophobe for calling this a POS but Campion might just be the worst opportunist "ally" of gay people ever. Truly wonderful actors wasted on cardboard characters with overly predictable and manipulatively depressing motivations. A gay cowboy pinup calendar has more substance than this dog of an "art film." Cinematography is beautiful but this movie is ugly, mean, small-minded and ultimately just boring. It does not work as a critique of "toxic masculinity" because real people aren't so one-dimensional and easy to despise. It probably does qualify as toxic, self-important "artistry." Is there not room in the world for men who embrace traditional manliness with eyes wide open, gay or straight? Are you a true feminist if you're so hung up on paper-thin gender roles (see Kirsten Dundst's Rose)? Shame on professional critics for their self-serving overly laudatory take on an at best mediocre "PC approved" effort. Expand

Exquisite Cinematography (Check). Beautiful direction (Check). Superb acting: Benedict Cumberbatch, and a truly scene stealing Jesse Plemons were real stand outs amongst superb performances. But all of that together did nothing to elevate a predictable script to be anything more than an annoying bore. Many may say that the story was gritty, artistic, and that they did not see the ending coming. However, the cow chips used in the actual west, had more substance than the ones that were the final result in this film. And the "unpredictable" ending, that could be seen a cattle train away. That 4 of 10 would have been a 2 out of 10 in a lesser group of artists hands, but that is the best that can be said for this. Expand

Loved the Piano and other works, but this film is a predictable tired display of modern PC culture to which professional critics feel obliged to herald, because of it's fleeting importance of subject matter. This film has been made many times within the last few years. It's extremely cookie-cutter and a low point for Campion. As one can see the user reviews are way lower than the obligatory handouts pro-critics have been giving it. That is not a mistake by viewers, and you're not missing anything that these pro critics are seeing. I also cannot take Cummerbatch as a cowboy. It just doesn't work for him. A shame too, as Plemons and Dunst truly shined bright. The only two beams of light to be emitted from this bland attempt at Campion staying relevant. Bummer for sure. And painfully snoozy. Throw some award noms at Plemons and Dunst, and just walk away, as those two performances are the most redeemable portions of this film. Expand

The interpretation in which Cumberbatch is the "dog" and Dunst is the "darling" is anti-textual nonsense. Also, the movie is boring, passive-aggressive drivel. The whole plot hinges on some nonsense about burning piles of extremely valuable cured animal hides, which no one would ever do. If you think this is a film about cowboys doing cowboy things, it's not. If you think it's about characters making logical choices based on competing interests, it's not. The acting was great, especially Kirsten Dunst, Benedict was perhaps miscast, the music was grating, overdone, and the cinematography was great. Take away the soundtrack and there seemed to be very little "there" there. Expand

This movie tells you its more important than it is, and the critics believed it.

Absolutely nothing happens, just grunting and nodding while the score makes you believe something epic is moments away. Spoiler: It isn't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Power of the dog was not Oscar worthy. First of all, its filmed in New Zealand that is very clear, the two brothers are still sleeping in their childhood room, but their mother and father have moved out of the house (why) never explained. The movie moves from the marriage, to being a drunk to her son in medical school in 10 minutes. Phil went to Yale really since he was having an affair with Brono Bill when did he have time to do this? And how did her son know that he would find a cow dead from Anthrax lucky find. There were HUGE holes in the story line, and I could not figure out why this movie would get any nods. If you want to watch a great western in the early 1900's watch Legend of the Falls so much better. Expand

It took a while for me to get invested in The Power of the Dog, it’s a slow burner and may not be to everyone’s tastes. If you’re expecting a shoot-’em-up kind of western then you may be disappointed.

A charismatic rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) is feared and awed by those around him. His brother, George (Jesse Plemons) brings home a new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Upset by their arrival, Phil torments them at every opportunity until he finds himself unexpectedly exposed to the possibility of love.

Regardless of your preconceptions The Power of the Dog was not the film I thought it would be. You’re not sure what to expect when it introduces the characters and gradually develops them to a point where you become totally invested in what happens next. That’s really how I felt watching this, the more I watched it the more I liked it and by the end I absolutely loved it. It tackles many different themes at once such as grief, loss and toxic masculinity which honestly was the last thing I was expecting from a western. It creatively blends a few genres together and is more on the psychological drama side with a truly haunting finale. It’s a strongly character driven story and the entire cast are absolutely brilliant, particularly Benedict Cumberbatch and Kodi Smit-McPhee. I’d expect some awards buzz around The Power of the Dog.

Director Jane Campion really has created a stunningly picturesque masterclass in filmmaking. I love a good western and honestly it seems to be a neglected genre nowadays. I haven’t seen one this good since Hostiles, more westerns please. Film fans if you haven’t already taken the time to see The Power of the Dog be sure to check it out. Highly recommended.

The Power of the Dog is simply outstanding. It's one of the most beautiful movies of the year featuring heartstopping cinematography of sweeping landscapes and a tonally perfect score from Jonny Greenwood who is, in my opinion, the best composer working today. This absorbing atmosphere takes you into a slow burn of a story with four characters that all have loads of depth. The main focus is on Phil Burbank, played flawlessly by Benedict Cumberbatch, as he inflicts his masculine wrath upon his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew. The interactions between these four creates a tension-filled ride despite there being little action for much of the film. On first viewing, my only flaw was that I wasn't able to grasp the ending, but on rewatch I was able to catch onto all of the foreshadow and clues that lead up to the shocking climax. Overall, I believe The Power of the Dog to be the best film of 2021, so if you can handle a slow burn please give it a shot. Expand

It's been some busy first weeks of 2022, but I got around to watching a Netflix release from December 2021, The Power of the Dog. It is one of Netflix's "prestige pics" that is an awards favorite. Let's see what's all the hype.

The Power of the Dog is directed by Jane Campion, who is best known for her film The Piano, but she hasn't directed a film since 2009. Campion also wrote the screenplay, which is an adaptation of a novel by Thomas Savage. The Power of the Dog is a story set in Montana 1925 where brothers, Phil Burbank (Bennett Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), own and run a cattle ranch. Phil is more hands-on, getting down and dirty with the ranch hands while George is focused more on the business end. While on a cattle drive into the nearby town, Phil, George and their ranch hands encounter Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst) and her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) at their boarding house and restaurant. Phil's cruel and acerbic nature lashes out at Peter leading George to offer Rose a kind shoulder. George and Rose's relationship blossoms - hijinks ensue.

While the plot to The Power of the Dog is important, Campion has focused more on developing the characters in the story. Each main characters has their particular quirks, and the movie seeks to tell the audience why they are this way. The film uses its vast landscapes and the big, empty Burbank estate to inform the audience about the loneliness and isolation of all four of the main characters. While this atmosphere is established quickly, the rest of the story unfolds at a very deliberate pace. The film is well-edited and there doesn't seem to be any unnecessary parts, but it does feel drawn out for what it ultimately becomes. Essentially, the audience has to be captivated by at least the conflict between Phil and Rose in order to enjoy the 2-hour ride.

Speaking of Phil and Rose, the main cast does a good job of bringing their characters to life. Benedict Cumberbatch is an interesting actor, but he's not always the best. Here, he gets the nastiness that permeates Phil and portrays how Phil's loneliness has morphed into acidic prickliness. To put it bluntly, Phil's a jerk! Kirsten Dunst does well in a tricky role. Rose has to be empathetic, but there is a stark turn for her character that is confusing and difficult to swallow. Dunst rolls with it and makes Rose convincing. Cumberbatch and Dunst are responsible for at least 2 unintentionally hilarious moments in this movie. You either like that or you don't. Finally, Smit-McPhee and Plemons round out the ensemble with strong performances that fill out the picture of this fractured family and its fraught relationships.

Ultimately, The Power of the Dog comes to Netflix as a 2-hour, "prestige pic", Academy Award-hopeful; so, you know what you're going to get. It's very serious and reveals its plot too slowly. If you're not into the characters and their intricacies, then you may not vibe with this Dog's power. While I enjoyed the look of the film and was drawn into the exploration of these characters, I've read the book, so I knew where it was going and was willing to stick with it. Since this is on Netflix, give it a handful of popcorn on a Sunday afternoon.

The entire plot is just hints and subtext, with hardly any dialogue. Music and cinematography make it seem like something tense is brewing, but no plot developments happen until the last 10 minutes. The only female character (though well acted by Dunst) is so undeveloped she is just a wilting flower - we're led to believe she is so weak that her brother in law playing mandolin a bit loudly and not coming to her dinner party was enough to torment her into alcoholism, despite the fact she apparently already survived one husband's suicide and ran her own business just fine. We are given no insight into the inner worlds of any characters and are instead left guessing at the meaning of it all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is subtlety in the slow reveal of this film, and a finesse of characterization in the acting that I appreciate. The smallest of gestures and glances tell much of the tale; the omissions are themselves key to the plot, some of which is hidden from direct view, and requires attention to the details. As an example, for the commenters who cannot understand Rose's resort to alcohol, there are indeed clues. The whistling Phil uses to torment her (Peter's mother) is lifted from the tune she was trying to practice on the piano ... when he interrupted her in the house as she played, alone; we may infer he abused her then in some more fundamental way (take your pick of possibilities). It is part of why she cannot play as planned, despite all her practice, when the governor visits for dinner. And it is only after that critical hidden moment that the whistles and the memory of Phil's abuse drive her to drink (which she never had a weakness for, prior). a

It seems her son recognizes the tuneful torture for what it means, or at least he suspects it. Thus, his trip to collect the anthrax-riddled hide is toward an already-planned purpose, and quite intentional. Note, as well, that Phil is shocked in the moment at which Peter easily kills the rabbit Phil has injured with his 'log tossing' torment. Peter is quite able to put it out of its misery without qualm, which shocks and surprises Phil because he didn't think Peter had it in him to do such a thing. All of which speaks to Peter's hidden strength and Phil's inability to perceive it. A hidden strength that itself is commented upon outright, and explicitly by Peter himself -- "... because I was too strong" -- which Phil mocks and questions, thus earning a sidelong and meaningfully penetrating look from Peter at the oblivious Phil in response, as an additional tell to the audience that there is much more strength and planning going on under Peter's surface than Phil realizes.

I do not get what the fuss is about. I once heard or read a saying about ambiguity not being profoundness - and this movie is bang-on ambiguous. I can only imagine that it is its ambiguity that's been taken as profoundness.

Two brothers - both weird, one's a bully and then stuff happens. All this set in the old west, so the movie is a western - it does not have a reason to be but it is. To its credit, the movie holds your attention and lingers on and on - as if something is going to happen, but nothing especially does and then the movie ends.

It definitely has some talent and quality - but for some reason the not-main-actors (i.e. The extras/bit part) were its most interesting bit. The Power of the Dog is a ridiculously unexceptional and unnecessarily abstract movie lacking in anything particularly noteworthy. Again, I do not get what the fuss is about.

Phil is not the villain we're led to believe, nor Rose the saint. George is practically absent, as is any kind of weight to any of the characters. Their motivations are entirely mysterious to us and never resolved in any meaningful way. If this is about toxic masculinity, as Cumberbatch recently lectured all us menfolk on, where is it in this film? Is Phil toxic? Or a product of his times? Is Rose noble because she, lost her first husband? Has a gay son? Married George? Or are we seriously supposed to believe that Phil picking on her was the source of all that suffering? In the end, Phil is the only one who tries to make a meaningful connection to Peter.

If this is some diatribe against toxic masculinity, the only thing we learn is that Campion has no idea what that is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually astonishing, with a soundtrack that gives an uneasiness that puts you in a state of constant expectation of the dread to come, "Power of the dog" is a western where death comes not from a bullet but from a cold calculated mind. It start with on of the main characters saying he need to protect his mother and ends a perfect loop with him doing jus so. The best scene of the movie shows Pete and Phill in the bard, Phill working on the rope he was crafting for Pete, and Pete subtly gaining the upper hand though crafted small gestures and at first innocents questions and becoming the tormentor after so long being the one tormented in the relationship between the two. While the movie does not have a plot filled with events, it's strength lies in the character development and arch. What happens is mostly in their minds and souls and is perfectly portrayed by the acting and the camera that at times seems to put you right in the midst of their angst. Expand

The film doesn’t really have an overarching story but instead focuses on small character journeys instead. The main focus of this story is on Benedict Cumberbatch’s character with the other characters contributing to it without really having a major story of their own. I would take a bigger issue with that if the performances from the supporting cast wasn’t great but they are. Jesse Plemmons and Kirsten Dunst give amazing performances. It’s fascinating seeing them contribute to Cumberbatch’s arc with both of them showing his character what love is even if Dunst’s character goes about it the wrong way. Jodi Smit-McPhee gives a good performance as well but he’s usual overshadowed by Benedict Cumberbatch. Speaking of him, Cumberbatch gives the best performance in the entire film. His character goes through this arc of learning to be more open to others about who he is. He mascaradas around as a tough cowboy but he isn’t like that at all on the inside. He has a more feminine side in him that he doesn’t want to come out but learns by the end that that’s okay. It’s a very compelling arc even if the story does it very slowly and subtly. The writing and directing here are top notch. Jane Campion has a great eye for what she wants to show and her style for slow burns works great for a western. The music and cinematography are some of the best aspects of the film. The film just looks and sounds absolutely beautiful and I loved how it looked. It’s amazing what you can show if you film a western on location. This is a film I would definitely recommend checking out when you can. It’s a great performance piece for Benedict Cumberbatch. Its a smart and cunning movie and probably the best of the year.

A beautifully crafted film by Campion. Benedict Cumberbatch once again shows us the range he carries as an actor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Didn't expect it to be this good, but it was really, really good. And extra points for a female director not trying to be a male director. There are scenes here only a woman could have pulled off - you will never see a man make love to a hankie this beautifully. Or forgive a murderer this easily. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a dreadful movie. I couldn't sit through it to the end.

Cumberbatch has 2 speeds- getting dirtier (by bathing in mud, for example) and glowering. That's it. He's charismatic? How?

Jesse Plemens role could have been played by a store mannequin, that's the level of the character's physicality and emotion. Kirsten Dunst is ditzy squared but it gets tiring pretty quick. Her Pee Wee Herman wannabe son is laughable and wouldn't have survived in 1920's Montana for 10 minutes. If you need a list of a hundred movies released this year, to see ahead of this one, drop a me line and I will send it to you.

I barely finished watching to the middle. It is one of the most boring movies I've seen in my life.
