With an impressively deceptive screenplay, one believes everything that Grace (Nicole Kidman) goes through and believes, but as her perception changes, so does the viewers until one is not quite sure what one ought to believe. Excellently directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who also did the soundtrack and wrote the screenplay, with some amazing cinematography and film editing, "The Others" manages to create such a genuinely spooky mood that one just cannot tear oneself away from watching the film through the end. The cast is impressive, to say the least. Nicole Kidman gives one of her best performances to date, as the grief-stricken, somewhat psychotic mother trying to protect her children at all costs. The children actors are excellent, also, as well as the servants in the film - especially, Fionnula Flanagan, who delivers a chilling performance as Mrs Mills.
Overall, the film is definitely worth seeing and is one of the scariest and gripping films that will make you wonder about it for days and days...

MASTERPIECE

The acting is fantastic, the atmosphere is present throughout the entire movie which holds it up quite well even to today's standards (or possibly even better).

The scarry elements of the movie were well placed and elaborated upon by the characters and the narrative.

I highly recommend it to any horror/thriller fan out there. The ending is pretty fantastic as well and I doubt it will disappoint most of you.

Because the characters are well written and Nicole Kidman's performance as the quirky mother is great that one of the most underrated performance see her facial expressions in the mirror while she is removing the sheets in that empty room.

If the others came out before the sixth sense , I bet everyone would diss the sixth sense.

This isn't a typical "haunted house movie" or "ghost story" either, and there is absolutely nothing corny about it. Kidman, of all cast members, delivers a fantastic performance (as usual). The film tells the haunting tale of a woman who returns to her mansion, after her husband begins to fight in World War II, with her two young children, who are highly sensitive to light stronger than that given off by a candle, and an elderly woman serving as a nanny. The terror begins when her two children begin claiming to see "ghosts", which at first she does not believe, but is eventually forced to, when she sees no coincidence between her children's tellings and the evidence of intruders in the house. If there's one horror movie that should have been won the awards for (at least) Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing at the Academy Awards, THE OTHERS is that film. It creates enough suspense and terror to keep you on the edge of your seat for the whole, entire feature. It is a definite must-see. Expand

Featuring a stellar score composed by Amenabar himself, The Others also has a great lead performance from Nicole Kidman and good supporting turns from Fionnula Flanagan, Alakina Mann, and James Bentley. Relying largely on the fear of the unknown, the film is a major success and really keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to piece everything together. The great music accompanying the film is also a major player in this role as he truly keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot as a whole is also very good and the storyline is well conceived and executed. In addition, the twists and turns this one takes really elevate it above your typical ghost story. Finally, the cinematography is gorgeous. Largely taking place at a single location, the film utilizes it to its full creepy potential and quite beautifully at the same time. Overall, The Others is an expertly crafted horror thriller that manages to entertain while also bringing a lot to the table artistically. Expand

You're gonna think I'm insane, but after doing some digging, I think I was just looking at The Others completely wrong. I watched it again, and now I realize it's not about "ghosts" or something. This movie seems too intelligent to only have like 2 scenes involving them. It's about some crazy mom and her kids in this creepy house. I think I was wanting this movie to be like The Innocents where it was actually about the evil kids and a ghost.

okay, i was shown this as per the "gothic" section of the year ten english curriculum (in australia), and DEAR ZOMBIE JESUS DOES THIS MOVIE SUCK!

first off the bat, the twist ending, for anyone observant enough, is downright obvious within the first half hour, why? m. night shayamalan made the sixth sense in 1996, a decent film that had a mind-blowing twist, in 1999, the japanese, whether they had heard of the sixth sense or not, nonetheless, refined the formula and gave us a more psychologically daunting and horrific take on the idea with silent hill, and in 2001, the others completely leeches off both of them (even the fog) to try and refine the "people who don't know they're dead" concept, which fails pitifully to bring anything fresh to the table, or to even creep me out, and even if you hadn't seen or heard of either of these things, it would still be obvious if you payed attention, because it is executed so sloppily!

secondly, the scares are NON-F**KING-EXISTENT, why? because the twist is so obvious and, just like paranormal activity, it does not give you anything to be scared of, oh, the curtains are down, how scary, oh, the plastic tarp (plastic tarp? one word: ANACHRONISM) rustled, how scary, oh, someone is walking loudly on the floor above, how scary... need i say, er... type more? only two scenes are creepy throughout the mercilessly dull 105 minute runtime: that iconic scene with anne in the pretty dress, and the scene where the housekeepers are confronting grace on the steps of her manor, after the little revelation that they're... TAKE ONE GODDAMN GUESS!

thirdly, the performances... dear god... nicole kidman is TERRIBLE, what is particularly amusing is roger ebert said the following "nicole kidman succeeds in convincing us that she is a normal person in a disturbing situation" her character is painted, from the start, as a thinly-veiled psychotic lunatic, i had no empathy for her, and because of that, all the scares that should have worked despite the poor twist fall flat, james bently was a terrible child actor playing a terrible child character, frankly, i wouldn't care if he died a violent horrific death, and that is not a good thing, alakina mann was one of three talented people in the entire movie, she was a decently realized character, and thus, i cared about her, which is why the scene i mentioned earlier worked so effectively, eric sykes and fionulla flanagan were great as the housekeepers, who manage to make otherwise flat dialogue oddly chilling, the story behind the maid was chilling, even if elaine cassidy wasn't really good as the maid.

finally, the sorry human being who made this, when you can't get kidman to act properly, and your movie rips off shayamalan and a video game, YOU NEED TO REVISE YOUR F**KING MOVIE!!!

too sincere to its mannerism..

The Others

The Others is a character driven horror drama about a mysterious house that reveals horrifying truth to a slightly superstitious and a bit deranged family. Amenabar's execution is brimmed with such panache that it uses concepts of mirage and lightings and such other tricky camera work to scare the bejesus out of the audience rather than relying upon typical hokum equations like creatures or benign art designing to enhance its intensity. The malleable mythological tale with an updated version that actually warps us back to ancient times, is the key and the theme that fuels this poised and reserved tale that is too sincere to its mannerism. The background score is brilliant along with the jaw dropping cinematography, sharp sound effects and fine editing. The narrative is way too sharp than it seems and the primary reason to that is the awareness of the writer of the chemistry and the equation and each tiny characteristic of the characters. This is not your average scoreboard mentality natured script, it runs on merit of bratty and rebellious kids against the overprotective emotions which will leave you shook on your seats. Kidman is the only performer in here that makes it all work and flaunts her potential to make you writhe on your seat by being on the same side of the coin as yours. Each mirror on screen, each ray of candlelight, each shady room and each painting, everything that Amenabar places on screen, he is fiddling with you subconsciously while we sit nervously and our fingers half eaten off as he narrates it. Kidman's stellar performance and Amenabar's finesse on execution and his jagged script are the high points of the feature. The Others is a lot about us and that is how we are able to easily communicate with them, you'd want to find out who is singing.

While her husband is fighting the Nazis, she lives isolated in a Channel Islands mansion, keeping the house in partial darkness along with three mysterious servants. The lead role is played by Nicole Kidman, who does a brilliant performance in a character who sometimes seems very loving, almost needy, and other times seems unusually hard. But she's just a woman trying to bear a burden that seems heavy: the burden of carrying everything back while her husband is away. The children are equally interesting: played by James Bentley and Alakina Mann, two very competent young actors, they are naive, sweet but also very mischievous, and their mischief contributes greatly to the suspense, especially the girl. She seems to know something that nobody else knows or to have a particularly sharp intelligence. The father, played by Christopher Eccleston, is almost a mere figure. He is purposely an absent character who is permanently present for the simple fact of all the others are constantly speaking of him, and this absence has great importance to the psyche of his wife. But the true life of this film is borrowed by Fionnula Flanagan and Eric Sykes who (along with Elaine Cassidy) give life to the house servants. The way they acted and how counter-acted with Kidman is brilliant, giving the film a deeply conspiratorial atmosphere. The constant darkness, the gas lights, the huge old house, the permanent haze surrounding the grounds are cliché elements that give the film a touch of elegance and help the audience to grab to the movie until the end, which is quite unexpected and disconcerting. I thought it was a good movie. It did feel pretty spooky and atmospheric and the story was intriguing enough to keep me interested to watch it right through until the end.

It was a good length and didn't seem to lag at any particular point. It had good acting, I felt that Nicole Kidman and the two child actor/actresses were particularly good, giving very realistic and believable performances and all in all it felt like a pretty high quality production, so it is worth seeing, although its not a particularly fast paced movie but rather more of a spooky slow burner, I suppose.

I'm not usually interested in period dramas but I do like a good supernatural movie, or ghost story, so this fit that well.

The main downsides to it, if any, is that it doesn't feature any amazing special effects, so don't watch it if thats what your looking for, its more a modern 1940s movie I suppose and it may be possible for others to guess some of whats going on before its revealed, though there is an extra twist at the end, which will probably surprise most. I thought that the end was pretty good but I suppose if you've seen many similar movies then it may be possible to figure it out.

All in all, it struck me as being a good, quality production. The story was interesting enough to keep me interested and there are some twists towards the end, although we, as viewers, are kept somewhat in the dark (har har) for most of the movie, its worth it to wait until the end when all is spookily revealed.

I thought that the story was pretty good in general and I would say that its worth watching, for the performances alone almost. It did seem a pretty traditional ghost story made for the screen and it did work, all in all, pretty well, so I would recommend it.

the movie is special for sure and it has the element of surprise as well. but the rhythm is a little slow and some audiences may find it hard to go with the movie to the end.

One of the best films Kidman has done. Her performance is first rate. She will do fine without Tom Cruise.

Awsome movie!!! Great performance by Nicole Kidman. It scared me a lot. Which scared me weren't ghosts or monsters but the saying that sums up the movie : "sometimes the world of the dead gets mixed up with the world of the living".

A supernatural thriller that relies too much on Nicole Kidman, (in for me, her best performance to date), dragging it through an hour and forty minutes.

Moreover, the thriller is quite average, suspense is not sustained throughout the film. The first half of the film is very tight, all the main action takes place in the last 20 minutes. The main twist is not surprising at all. And as a result, you don't understand why everyone liked The Others so much. For me, this is a completely passing thriller Expand

The quiet thriller mood, Nicole Kidman's outstanding performance, and the ending will propel The Others to a climax similar to The Sixth Sense.

I first saw the creepy, infuriating Others when I was still figuring out what made a good movie and what made a bad movie. Even then, when I thought New Year's Eve and even Catwoman were funny, it was obvious to me that the film was a waste of time, relying on acting ability. Some time later, I saw this movie on TV, and my opinion was not only unchanged, it was solidified by the "movie power" I had developed by watching many movies.

The film is dark from beginning to end. I don't mean the style, but the brightness. The main character Grace's (Nicole Kidman) two children die when exposed to sunlight. Therefore, there is no electricity in the room, and it is boring from beginning to end. Honestly, why did they set it up this way? It's boring, boring, boring. Boring to death.

You want to know when the real horror comes into the movie? It's about an hour into the movie. Until then, Nicole Kidman makes a scene and leaves a creepy remark about her kid seeing a kid named Victor. It's creepy, and yet nothing is going on. There is a heavy air that something is going to happen, and yet nothing happens for an hour after the movie starts.

Those who like this movie will say that the great performances of the cast members are not to be missed. Well, sure. Great performances, especially from Nicole Kidman. She played the character of Grace, a frightened, yelling, and screaming woman, beautifully. However, that may have been rather counterproductive. This Grace character yelled at the children and seemed to me to be a character who constantly shifted blame. It is a mystery horror film, so it is predictable that something spiritual will come out. I am annoyed by the characters who self-centeredly deny it. You can tell it's counterproductive to the cast members who play these characters well.

As you can see, there is not much to this film. It is not particularly scary, and even the acting is wasted. Well, I could forgive it if the ending was better, but it's a rip-off of The Sixth Sense, and that's all I can say. Was the entire script made for this ending? When I think so, hatred rises from the bottom of my heart.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is nothing better than being taken by surprise, and it's even better when the surprise is damn good.

This movie, at first, introduces us to a family and its new employees. The atmosphere begins to go down, adding a little discomfort to each scene when, together with the peculiarities of the house and the family, leave us thoughtful. The suspense is well-developed. Make us crawl in several moments, without the use of **** jumpscares. Beyond that. The movie develops the plot in a phenomenal way. It gives us factual, subjective, and even omits points, making the plot twist crazier and "plausible" at the same time.

The characters are good, mostly the protagonist's daughter.
Also, the acting is great. The employees surprised me a lot, mostly by their finesse. Photography serves its purpose and has its moments. The illumination gives a good immersion eventually.

In the end, I loved the proposition - revealed in the end. Showing the side we are not used to seeing in horror movies.
