The scant action scenes are decently staged, but what holds this film back is the continual drop of long monologues. They happen several times and not only do they slow down the momentum, but they don't add anything to the narrative. Cage does his usual threatening dead-eye delivery and Armstrong possesses plenty of pluck. There's virtually nothing about this movie that's original and it might have been a bit more bearable if it stuck to Western tropes instead of dramatic monologues. Expand

Especially the little girl's scenes at some parts, where she pretended to cry and such, just too much cringe (not her fault, but the writers). Expand

I like Nicolas Cage, but that's hardly going to change my opinion of many of the movies he makes. Bad is bad no matter what.

In this case, The Old Way couldn't be considered among his worst, but it's really a western that provides very little entertainment and feels severely unbalanced at times, mostly due to the simplicity of its script and its obviously low budget.

The dynamic between Cage and the girl is good, but that can barely do half the job overall, because the rest of the cast doesn't help much, and as I said, with such a mediocre script, there are only certain places to go, and in this case it all leads to disappointment.

The Old Way has decent technical credits, but it lacks a personality. A western starring Nicolas Cage should be a lot more interesting.

Everything here is completely serviceable in terms of performance, setting, and action. The script is just the most bland and stereotypical western revenge movie. Nothing original or inspiring in any element.
