It is a slow burn but when the pieces add up, it is devastating and extremely satisfying. It really dives into the horrors of manipulation and the struggle of mental disorders. The performance all around was incredible especially by Tye Sheridan. This is probably one of the saddest movies I have seen in over a decade and I loved every minute of it. I do not understand the bad reviews. Great movie, give it a watch. Expand

This film is too boggy and has devastating plot weaknesses.
There's no suspense, there's no believable mystery, and the performances are remarkably forgettable.

Absolute fiasco.

A good episode of Law & Order is more intriguing, by far.

Almost a century ago, in 1928, Propp had already taxonomized the possible narrative structures. Since then, writers and screenwriters racked their brains to devise some new paradigm. Cristofer is one of those who have aligned themselves with the tendency to adopt the perspective of a neuropsychopathology, perhaps passing it off as a case study, like the seminal Nolan brothers of "Memento" for anterograde amnesia and the recently awarded with two Oscars "The Father" for senile dementia. Waiting for this fashion to end, as a thriller the film does not work: no scene of the murder is shown, the protagonist goes to the barber, gets a different haircut, then magically returns to have it as before, the supporting players (Helen Hunt, Ana de Armas, John Leguizamo) are humiliated for their use as simple character actors.

Hey everyone! It's been a tough week in the real world and I implore you all to seek solace in the company of friends and family. It's been a tough week in the real world and I implore you all to seek solace in the company of friends and family. Seek love and share love because love and caring for others is how we will begin to heal. While healing through caring and understanding, we should also call for action from politicians to make change from that place of healing. But until then let's watch a movie or two, shall we?

This weekend I was struck by the simple title on my Netflix list, The Night Clerk. Already intrigued by the title, the description of the movie sealed the deal. The Night Clerk follows a young man working the night-shift as a front desk clerk at a hotel, who finds himself in a sticky situation. His teaching tool is also his damnation when a murder occurs under his watch. Intrigued arent you?! Well, let's dive in.

Tye Sheridan plays, Bart, the night clerk in a small cast accompanied by veterans Helen Hunt and John Leguizamo and scene siren Ana De Armas. Each cast member is pretty good, not perfect but absolutely believable, I'm side-eyeing you, Helen. The combination of the four is the most awkward and mesmerizing thing to watch. I don't know whether to love them or hate them, but I'm invested. So I know they did a good job. In fact, without each actor filling out their characters, the storyline is uber normal with slight tweaks of humanity and understanding. Oooh! Someone dies in a hotel. Who done it? Let's blame the socially awkward person we don't understand. Yes, he's awkward and more than likely he's prepping to kill someone when he get's older but that's not the point here. You've gone off the deep end if you make assumptions in the movie early on. There is depth to this seemingly shallow storyline. I know it's an oxymoron but that same contradiction is what makes the movie work. You're screaming this doesn't feel right but strangely it makes sense. I just can't put my finger on it, but Michael Cristofer was on to something. I think it could have gone a little further. Just something is off to not make this really pop.

Needless to say, there was just something about this movie that got to me. It's not perfect but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I knew what was coming but was awkwardly kept off guard. The Night Clerk is perfect for streaming because it's just interesting enough, just familiar enough and just racy enough to get you to talk about it. For that, I must admit this is a guilty pleasure film of mine and I enjoyed my bowl of popcorn.

La trama es genérica y predecible; aunque la actuación de Tye Sheridan es excelente.

Acting in it is good. The plot is kinda soft with minimal twists to it. But still enjoyable.

Extracto

Abstract

The Night Clerk is a film about a young hotel concierge with Asperger's syndrome who becomes a witness and then a suspect in a crime. The movie works better as a drama than a thriller, building on some accomplished intimate moments.

Review:

Bart, a young man with Asperger syndrome (Tye Sheridan), works as a night shift concierge at a small hotel. He has surreptitiously set up a camera system inside the rooms to spy and record the guests in order to improve his particular ways of relating and talking to people. But in this way he becomes a witness (and later a suspect) of a crime that he observes through the cameras.

Michael Cristofer's film (which refers to spy movies like Rear Window, Body Double, and Sliver) is a combination of drama and thriller that works best as drama. Bart's character is well outlined, with his curious (and typical) combination of naivety, intelligence, and communication difficulties, with his consequent loneliness. The film takes its time to create effective intimate climates between the protagonist and a new guest, Andrea (femme fatal from the story by the versatile Ana de Armas) and to delineate with few and effective strokes the relationship between Bart and his mother (a unrecognizable and intense Helen Hunt).

As for the thriller side, the story opens its letters, but certain elements of the intrigue and its resolution are somewhat confused and perhaps forced.
