He rents an old mansion, builds stables for his wife’s horse hobby and sends the kids to new schools. All of this disruption, plus his faltering career cause challenges to the family’s relationships. The spouse and both kids get moments that examine the evolution of their new situation and how it affects their connections with each other. Even so, it’s Law’s complex character that drives the drama and his creation of the man’s flaws and charms that makes for an absorbing character study. Interestingly, other than the teen’s music and the fact that the wife smokes in restaurants, there’s almost no evidence that this takes place in the 80s.… Expand

The critics love this movie because of the good acting. However, the plot is merely a big tease. Story lines go nowhere. If you like to watch a family bicker and lie to each other, this will be your cup of tea. I thought the tea got cold.

Marriage is not a dream story. At least not always and cinema has known how to exploit that in many ways, but not always in the best way.

Yet sometimes comes along the way a story that it may not convince you that marriage is something to aspire to, but I guarantee that it will be a good experience to watch it.

The Nest comes to touch that theme in the story of Rory and Allison (Jude Law & Carrie Coon) who apparently already had a worn relationship, but the routine of the family life masked the signs.

Something very interesting about this film is that for the most part it looks like a horror film, but it just isn't.
There's nothing supernatural stalking this family, what's hunting them, is their inevitable breakdown.

Director Sean Durkin delivers his second film after the notorious Martha Marcy May Marlene nine years later, and this one is unequivocally more challenging and far more accomplished.

But I must warn you, if you watch the trailers before you decide to see the it, and get expectations of a sort of suspense thriller, you will be quite disappointed.

The approach of The Nest is elegant, intricate and thorough.
It doesn't reward the casual viewer, it rewards the one who pays attention and is willing to dive into a story that isn't looking to satisfy you with a happy ending.… Expand

Pretentious .. overwrought.. pointless.. ham fisted symbolism that was more confusing than symbolic. Feels like half of a film.. gawd I despise these artsy-fartsy abrupt endings from hell! There are moments of dramatic human insights within this labored work, otherwise, it comes across as overstretched pretensions of a failed family unit - falling apart from greed and superficial delusions. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman or Eugene O’Neil but without the solid literary groundings of the latter. Direction is too often heavy handed and the trendy foul-mouthed dialog, along with a needlessly voyeuristic sex scene, limits its suitability to a wider audience. It also dangerously flirts with other genres, at times suggesting it's heading towards a Horror theme; this will also put some audiences off. Performances from Jude Law, Carrie Coon as the parents, with Oona Roche and Charlie Shotwell as their children, are delivered in hard-working and convincing form but mostly the characters are unlikable. Cinematography is pleasing in its own drab way and it has a pensive music score that props up its drama quite well. Perhaps if given a more even-handed approach, this might have had broader appeal. As is, can’t see too many ‘enjoying’ this one.… Expand

I loved how the story starts to give you subtle, little hints that there is a big problem lurking within this family that seems picture-perfect on the outside. Lograda crónica de una crisis matrimonial y familiar resultante de una mudanza de EE.UU. a Inglaterra que impone grandes cambios para sus miembros. El planteo de la historia como un curso de colisión de crisis personales que se van desarrollando en paralelo es un acierto narrativo, en una película que cuenta con brillantes actuaciones de Jude Law y, sobre todo, de Carrie Coon.


Reseña:

Rory (Jude Law) es un bróker inglés que vive hace 10 años con su esposa Allison (Carrie Coon), la hija de ella y el hijo de ambos en EEUU. Hasta que él decide volver con su familia para instalarse en un enorme caserón rural de Surrey para reformular la empresa londinense en la que trabajaba antes de su partida a EE. UU. Corre el principio de los años 80 y el thatcherismo y comienzan a soplar los vientos neoliberales de desregulación y globalización financiera y económica.

El refugio es algo más que el relato de una crisis matrimonial, ya que en realidad describe el desarrollo crisis personales relacionadas pero que se van desarrollando en paralelo y siguen un curso de colisión. Rory es audaz y ambicioso y su concepción americanizada de la economía y la empresa choca con las resistencias de las prácticas más conservadoras (hasta el momento) de las firmas británicas. La cartera de Rory incluye una importante dosis de simulación y algo de autoengaño.

Su esposa Allison debió dejar atrás su trabajo como entrenadora de caballos y comenzar con la gestión de un establo propio y su primer caballo (que adquirirá resonancias especiales) en el mismo campo de la casona en la que viven. Viene soportando varias mudanzas y tratando de preservar cierta independencia económica.

Pero es en esta aventura inglesa donde los problemas matrimoniales que se venían negando bajo una fachada de familia perfecta y exitosa comienzan a imponerse.

Me atrevería a decir que la protagonista de la película (o mayormente su punto de vista) es el de Allison; su crisis es más evidente ya que es una personalidad menos negadora. Carrie Coon (que ya viene de grandes papeles en The Leftovers, The Sinner 2 y Fargo 3) realiza una actuación extraordinaria, con los matices necesarios para cada una de las escalas de su recorrido emocional. Jude Law también está muy bien, pintando las aristas de su insoportable personaje.
Un acierto de la película es la relevancia que toma el caserón como escenario, acaso como metáfora que permite al relato asomarse al suspenso e incluso al terror.

Summary

Achieved chronicle of a marriage and family crisis resulting from a move from the US to England that imposes great changes for its members. The presentation of the story as a collision course of personal crises that unfold in parallel is a narrative success, in a film that has brilliant performances by Jude Law and, above all, Carrie Coon.


Review:

Rory (Jude Law) is an English broker who has lived for 10 years with her wife Allison (Carrie Coon), her daughter and their son in the US. Until he decides to return with his family to settle in a huge rural house in Surrey to reformulate the London company in which he worked before his departure to US. The early 1980s and Thatcherism are beginning to blow, and the neoliberal winds of deregulation and financial and economic globalization are beginning to blow.

The Nest is more than just the story of a marital crisis, as it actually describes the development of related personal crises that unfold in parallel and follow a collision course. Rory is bold and ambitious, and his Americanized view of the economy and business is met with resistance from the more conservative practices (so far) of British firms. Rory's portfolio includes a significant dose of simulation and some self-deception.

Her wife Allison had to leave her job as a horse trainer behind and start managing her own stable and her first horse (which will acquire special resonances) in the same field as the house where they live. . He has been enduring several moves and trying to preserve some financial independence.

But it is in this English adventure where the marital problems that had been denied under the facade of a perfect and successful family begin to prevail.

I would dare to say that the protagonist of the film (or mostly her point of view) is Allison's; her crisis is more evident since she is a less denier personality. Carrie Coon (who is already coming from great roles in The Leftovers, The Sinner 2 and Fargo 3) performs an extraordinary performance, with the necessary nuances for each of the scales of her emotional journey. Jude Law is doing great too, painting the edges of his excruciating character.

A success of the film is the relevance that the mansion takes as a setting, perhaps as a metaphor that allows the story to glimpse into suspense and even terror.… Expand

This film has fantastic cinematography, pitch-perfect acting, a perfect score, and a wonderful mood. It seemed to be inspired by Hitchcock, from the patient unraveling to the font choices. I also enjoyed the cultural commentary on British manners and American gruffness that was perfectly portrayed in the marriage dynamics. That being said, that plot of this film never fully develops. After the O'Hara family moves to husband Rory's native UK and rents out a dismal mansion — the plot sputters to a question mark. The film is marketed as a "thriller," but these plot devices are never fully explored (suspicious deaths; intimations of the supernatural) — and ultimately, it leaves little as fodder for analysis. As a character study, it's interesting and nuanced, but it never hits the mark it could. Jude Law's character never faces his denouement, and thus a catharsis is lacking. I was very disappointed by this film, mostly because it had so much potential.… Expand
