This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The meg is by no means a great movie, but it is at least entertaining. The special effects are great, which is expected by the big budget they had.

Jason Statham is very good in it, he's character is actually has a better characterization than i expected, unfortunately other characters don't get the same privilege, making the deaths not sink in. I liked dynamic between Jason Statham and this little girl character "Meying".

They tried forcing a romance in their, but it just distracted me from the real action, because it was totally out of place. Amongst all that, the movie didn't take itself too seriously, it was quite funny, which i can appreciate. When Jason Statham stabs the Meg's eye, was just that awesome Jason Statham moment every movie of his needs to have. Overall a good watch

It got right to business which was nice and never dallied between action scenes. The characters were underdeveloped and i wish they'd had someone other than Jason Stathan in the lead because he added nothing chemistry wise. The actor who plays Walt Longmire in the Longmire tv series was in it which was a bonus because i've never seen him in a film before.
The shark shots were very well done and the action sequences were pretty good.
Worth seeing if you like shark films.

Lu Bingbing wasn't that great, but she was nice to look at. I was hoping Page Kennedy got got, but it didn't happen. He was annoying, but had a few funny lines. Ruby Rose did not get enough screen time. She is a future star! I do recommend seeing this movie. It is worth it. Expand

To me, The Meg is like the diverse-futuristic-inclusive Jaws though lacks the extreme effort set in the story telling of Jaws. I recently got to watch Jaws and I literally would not take my eyes off the screen from the very beginning of the film to the end. Both films, The Meg and Jaws, introduce their primary menace early on — but — Jaws creates more than one menace beyond the threats in the water. Jaws brings the audience to render the situations of the town as is and sets an importance on the beach for the town. There’s an entirely different set of circumstances which the audience has to not only recognize but deal with. It’s one thing to think about dead family members and friends. It’s an even more serious matter thinking of the livelihoods of an entire town — the economy — and long-term functions that rely heavily on a season’s production in conjunction with deaths, publicity, and responsibilities — responsible persons. My goodness. The Meg throws a huge number at everyone about a station that only really seems to affect only so many people in a particular area and industry. I’m not knocking The Meg as a thriller film — but there’s no way to ignore its potentially greatest influence Jaws.

So, I’m going to discuss a few similar aspects that take very different routes of exploration. Let’s talk social. The Meg sets its social tone in a limiting way which Jaws explores way further. Jaws doesn’t simply throw out a large number then mention life being about sex, money, respect, and power (which I find to be a very lazy-overloaded-underspecified-vague term). The audience has to walk through the ins and outs of the town’s circumstances in Jaws and really has to set themselves in the shoes of many of the people in the film. What do you do as the mayor or sheriff of a town in need? That’s an initial question then the rest of the questions come concerning economy and safety which become of the greatest concerns of all parties able to affect change.

There’s no way to avoid talking about intelligence. I like the mini shark lessons throughout Jaws which develop as the plans adjust. The Meg doesn’t really coerce me into believing any of the acting partners are actually knowledgeable about their circumstances. Realistically, the audience is thrown into scenarios with acting partners either claiming to be all knowing of their circumstances or having been set in a position as all knowing of their circumstances. Jaws leads scenarios so well. There are so many moments of solidification which back up the character types set in Jaws. The Meg has really nice facilities and looks good. I always feel like technology can never really look smarter than its developers or users — no matter how flashy it may look. Why cost so much looking good — if it doesn’t work so well? I’m into future developments but don’t force technological-self-autonomy on me until auto-correct is flawless. This might seem like a random rant — but, I assure you, it’s not. In Jaws, technology comes as an extension of the specialists’ knowledge and necessities. In The Meg, technology is present as a necessity which allows for specialists to delve into and encounter that which is fully unknown. In Jaws, the specialists are always analyzing bits to ensure to know as much as possible before their delve into any scenarios involving the sharks. Why wouldn’t the specialists in The Meg properly analyze every bit of the cloud with a machine from that billion dollar station so as to ensure proper safety parameters were set instead of relying completely on technological specs that were crushed? Why wouldn’t the specialists secure their vehicles properly to ensure their swift mobility out of any potentially dangerous situations? Precautions aren’t meant to be taken post dive. Live to explore another day with more intelligence and better research. My goodness.

I’m going to take some time to appreciate the camera angles of Jaws. Cinematography really makes a film more effective. Jaws makes me feel like more matters than a complete movie; Jaws forces me to acknowledge all that is within the film as though constantly waving away the idea that I’m even watching a film. When I’m watching Jaws, I constantly feel like I’m receiving reminders that there is something more important going on here — look! When I’m watching The Meg, I’m more like — What’s going to happen next?! / What time is it?

Overall Grade: C-/C

“Well, I’m in trouble”

Jason Statham vs. giant shark - How’s that for a movie pitch. Ridiculous, but could be fun. And it was enjoyable, especially the last 20 minutes. Which shouldn’t be surprising the film swept at the box office and lives up to the concept of Statham fighting a 2.6 million year old, thought to be extinct shark. Just don’t be surprised if this becomes a meme in a few years.

The movie literally ends with a Thai version of ‘’Hey Mickey you’re so fine’.

Still, ‘The Meg’ was a lot of fun. Is it going to change cinema forever or give you a unique experience? Not really. It’s one of the dumbest movies of 2018, and yet, you can find some enjoyment out of it. You can even laugh at the corny scenes which was meant to be taken seriously. However, if I have to critique, I will gladly do so.

This movie lacks balance in tone and knowing what it’s trying to be. There’s horror elements when the Megalodon attacks. There’s comedic elements that stops it from being gloomy. There’s dumb popcorn fluff to keep things vibrant. And there’s suspense when the shark is near. All tones mashed together with uneven results. I didn’t find any of the humor that funny and the only time I chuckled was something unintentional.

The amount of charm Statham brings to the character already makes his presence likable. Too bad they didn’t give him any memorable one liners. You could pick out lines like “Chomp on this you ugly bastard.”, or “My god, it’s a Megalodon” - those are alright, although nothing will top “Smile you son of a b-”.

Every time there’s a death scene or somebody is going to die, it’s telegraphed and obvious. Supporting characters with very little screen time - They goners. Also, I’ve haven’t seen Masi Oka in anything for awhile and I was surprised to see him here. Loved him in ‘Heroes’. Man, they did him wrong here.

The CGI is OK, some of the acting wasn’t that good, and the overall experience feels like a water down blood-fest.

Jon Turteltaub (the director) openly said the original cut was brutal and "Horrifying, Disgusting". In interviews, Turteltaub expressed his disappointment that we won’t see this cut in cinemas. Which makes me wonder what the original cut was like, not just in violence, but how terrifying it might be. Will it add anything? Who knows. Could have taken an enjoyable dumb film into a bloody good time. Perhaps this generations “Deep Blue Sea”.

I found this movie very uneven – some parts were good but other parts were incredibly dull. My family liked “The Meg” so much they are looking forward to “Meg II”!!! My main problem was how uneven the movie is. Some parts (and some of the actors) were pretty good, but other parts/actors were incredibly dull. The long section that I’ll call “Asian Humor at the Beach” was really boring and not at all funny, but maybe I was in the wrong audience. Let me just say this – The Meg is not Godzilla, King Kong, or any other famous monster. He/She is also not Jaws, although the film references the Spielberg masterpiece from time to time. Not terrible, but not very good either. Expand

A prehistoric monster that is madlyA would-be underwater "Jurassic World" that revitalizes the US-China film deal. Diving into the deep sea, Warner Bros. and Gravity Pictures release their latest Hollywood's big seasonal blockbuster. A prehistoric monster that is madly swallowing millions dollars because of three keystones: the first, of course, is the commercial hook a gigantic shark means in any cinema in any country around the world; the second, the "great cultural diversification" among the crew and cast in, from afar, an American-bodied mega-production, still, however, according to the box office results, it was enough for Chinese audiences to reward it with a boffo gross; and finally; Statham, who claims his action-hero crown after kicking hundreds of asses as "Deckard Shaw" from "Fast & Furious" film series and "Rick Ford" from "Spy," two fabulous scowling characters that makes him an unfailing A-list movie star in the States. Pulling the gimmicks together wisely and promoting them worldwide freshly and genuinely, there was no doubt they were being cooking a powerful smash hit up, satisfying the less stringent moviegoer's guilty pleasures via an unapologetically over-the-top American blockbuster that never attempts to go above and beyond what it really is: a thoroughgoing popcorn finisher for the most flamboyant, unprejudiced film season of the year, B-movie entertainment of overwhelming visual magnitudes by dint of magnanimous visual effects, with charismatic enough characters to make up for the screenwriting inconsistency and dizzyingly clumsy narrative growing exponentially as the movie runs. Go and buy your ticket, then your snacks, lay back and relax, shut your brain off and get in the malevolent jaws of this B-movie giant-shark crowd-pleaser floating above Michael Bay's film style.

Erich Hoeber, Jon Hoeber and Dean Georgaris, adapting freely "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror," the first of a sci-fi novel series from American writer Steve Alten, pen a script devoid of any iota of soundness. With an artificially effective opening, the material is moderately convincing for non-connoisseurs, of course, until sanity fades and Hollywood spectacle take its place. This film is simply a big-budget 2 hour-long action/adventure exercise that wants you to have a blast, only that.

Strategic business or not, it severely differs from the adventure found on the pages written by the New York Times Bestselling author, swapping blood-filled attacks and raw scenarios for lighter sequences and humorous deaths which are as frustrating as amusing. Posters and official trailer as evidence to say much of the story takes place far away from shore, a matter commercial advertisements kept hidden at all cost and shattered the hopes of many for a giant-sized "Piranha 3-D," for an in-your-face big-budget splatterfest. The savagery betokened from opening sequence takes place just in the last quarter of its running length, savagery quickly transmuting gracefulness. There is no denying Warner deftly crafts its pictures. This sumptuous C.G.I. fanfare could be the finest you'll see in a movie theater from a killer big fish blockbuster. Grant Major's production design is gargantuan, concordant with its gigantic budget ($130 million), creating a visual magnificence that propels and defends its nature: big, dumb action film.

The Herculean set-pieces are compelled by Harry Gregson-Williams' soundtrack, mixing environmental and suspenseful compositions that are assembled with popular hits and '80s-'90s classics such as the Thai version of "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil or "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin, which endows it that nonchalant feeling, that PG-13 the executives have decided to embrace. Unfortunately, the cinematic suspense is fair to middling, keeping in mind this vital ingredient must be handled masterfully in a film about, you know, a Megalodon. Setting aside Steven Spielberg's mandatory, unavoidable reference, it demonstrates careless tension building in the very first glance of the monster, the deaths aren't entirely imaginative and the encounters are far from memorable. This doesn't mean there is no iota of tension, there is, especially in the first act of the film, but Statham's heroism and Li's bravery manage to save this key role.

"The Meg" by Jon Turteltaub is a late-summer playfully over-the-top blast. We're not witnessing this year's revolutionary event movie, we're in front of a dumb actioner that brings US-China co-production deals back up— something Matt Damon's "The Great Wall" couldn't achieve —due to its unbelievable profitability and shocking— for good —mixed response from the critics. Seriously, Turteltaub's Statham vs big fish storytelling doesn't need a closer look, save your strength. This is pure popcorn entertainment and it's one of this year's finest. Take the bait, turn off your brain and let this monumental profit-driven shark open wide its jaws and try, just try, devour you for nearly two hours.

The Good:
- It has a big shark.
- The big shark kills people. - I actually cared about Jason Statham's character. - The story is actually interesting past the fact that a big shark is involved. The main group of characters is very likable. -

- The CGI is pretty solid.
- The little girl who plays Meiying steals all of the scenes that she's in.

The Bad:
- Some of the dialogue is extremely cheesy. - Ruby Rose is not very good at acting.
- I wish that the shark got to terrorize more large groups of people.
- The trailers were pretty misleading as to what this movie was going to be like. - A lot of the humor falls flat.

Overall: A solid movie to watch on a boring summer afternoon.

If this were more of a self aware comedy like the trailers suggested, it would be much better. It had self aware moments, but it didn’t take as far as it should’ve. I also feel that an R-rating would’ve help it as well. The visuals are surprisingly impressive. The shark looks pretty good. I will say that I was never bored at any point. I’ll give it that. Expand

Every summer, there seems to be a new shark movie that is released just as folks are heading out to the beach. The Meg is by farEvery summer, there seems to be a new shark movie that is released just as folks are heading out to the beach. Maybe they’re made to scare people off, or maybe it’s based on the fact that these movies make a lot of money. The Meg is by far the most high-profile, effects driven shark movie since Jaws. No, the terribly awful Sharknado films do not count, and they are made for TV. Going back to this film, the previews marketed the film as a fun time and exhilarating ride. However, even though I can say that the movie was not terrible, it definitely wasn’t much fun, and that is the major disappointment. As always, let us begin with the aspects of the film that were good. First off, we have Jason Statham as the lead role, which is an opportunity that he makes the most of. His character, Jonas Taylor, is a former rescue diver haunted by an incident in the past that resulted in the lives of two scientists. Living a quiet life in Thailand, he is recruited by Mana One, an ocean research facility, to rescue trapped members in a submarine that have been attacked by an unknown creature. His character develops as the movie progresses, going from a loner who wants to live a quiet life to a leader who places the lives of his crew mates above his own. Along with Statham, I also felt that Dwight K. Schrute (I mean Rainn Wilson) was entertaining as Dwight K. Schrute being a billionaire and fighting a prehistoric shark. Of course, the most important aspect of an action movie is the action, in which the film di not fail to deliver entirely. The effects were realistic CGI, which is an achievement considering that computerizing a 75 foot-long shark to fight props and submarines is a hard feat. We can thank the Chinese production companies that spent the money to make this film when a Hollywood-based probably wouldn’t do so. However, even though the action sequences are intense, there are much fewer scenes than I would’ve preferred to see.

This leads to the main weakness for this film: the lack of action sequences and fun. I care about quality more than anything, but when a film is marketed as a fun, action-packed adventure, that is the expectation that you go into the theater with. Unfortunately with The Meg, there is a lot more talking present. It ruins the pace of the film because the action will be interrupted multiple times by dialogue that, while relevant, is misplaced with the pacing. Also, the lead actress, Li Bingbing, did quite poorly when speaking English lines that it was distracting. When she spoke Mandarin, the scenes were well acted. It may be strange, but the same thing happens in Bollywood films. Since english is not the first and primary language for these actors, it is hard to speak and act it out properly in a movie.

I went into the theater expecting to have a good time, but a good time is not exactly what happened. It wasn’t a bad film because there was a clear objective for the characters as part of the plot and it wasn’t cheesy. However, it wasn’t fun or action-packed, which was seemingly the goal that the movie had in order to attract audiences. It certainly has, with over $460 million made across the globe at the moment. However, it definitely isn’t worth viewing in theaters. I say, it may be worth your $2 renting it on Redbox, but only if you want to see Jason Statham and Dwight take on sharks.

Rating wise, I would bestow this film 6 stars out of 10. No shark puns here.

The moment when the word Fin appeared at the end of the film caused me to laugh so hard that my soul exited my body.

the movie was beautiful and definitely a movie that should be watched in the cinema when you are out of sight and if you buy it as a dvd and watch it on TV you will not like it frankly i think you will not like it.

okay I have to admit until the last time I watched without being bored but I enjoyed it very much but when the movie was over I thought about how the TV would be.The subject was a little weak, only the effects and the shark chasing the people were nice.

It was a beautiful movie but you should definitely watch it in the cinema before you go out of sight or you will not enjoy it the same way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I mean this film is really stupid but at the same time it was kind of fun. I think my main issue with this movie is that it takes itself way too seriously. With that being said, I think this movie is a silly fun time that one can enjoy. I do want to mention one scene in this movie because it is awesome but it is also a spoiler so there's the warning:
Towards the end of the film I love how they handle the Megalodon. Jason Statham's character is piloting this underwater glider thing and he turns the glider over and cuts open the shark. He also stabs it in the eye, and then when the shark is bleeding, all of these other sharks come and start eating the Megalodon. Overall it was a fun movie but not anything special. I personally enjoyed it but my biggest issue is the tone of it. It is way too serious in the middle, but towards the end it gets back to crazy town.

i actually quite enjoyed this movie. It was pretty decent. The special effects were surprisingly good and the shark looked amazing. I loved the idea of Megalodon. The special effects were surprisingly good and the shark looked amazing. I loved the idea of Megalodon. I watched it in 3D and there were actually some really good 3D parts. Better 3D movie i've seen in a while. *spoilers* Like the part where the shark bites that ball and a piece flew at you, it made me jump. A lot of decent jump scares as well. I enjoyed the storyline and they didn't try to set up the ending for a sequel because i feel like this is good the way it is. One and one only. There were a lot of funny parts as well LOL like DJ was super funny and Meiying was pretty funny when she was telling DJ to shush haha. There were some parts, though, where the acting was a little off putting like, for example, when the shark bites the glass when Meiying was playing. Her acting when she got scared wasnt believable to me, though she is a kid, but also when they ran to her the acting just seem super weird like as if they often see HUGE bites all the time. i dont know how to explain it, but either way i still really liked the film. Decent video shots and there was some good actors/actresses in it. Jason Statham was a weird pick, but i must say it still worked. The film never bored me and there were really some good killing scenes where the sharks eats people in cool ways. I definitely wished the shark ate more people when it found all of those civilians swimming. It was still a decent film and i enjoyed it. Not something i would see twice, but fun nonetheless. Expand

The premise is as preposterous as it sounds. At least Jaws (1975) ‘could’ be true. This feels like a corporate movie made to make money, there is zero creativity for this film, just a whole lot of money thrown at it. It also feels like it was made for the Chinese who like American movies market. It has such broad appeal it is boring. Jason Statham annoying. The rest of the cast are totally forgettable. On the positive side the special effects and technical aspects are near-perfect. The pace is also fast and keeps you entertained. For a mindless film it works but as a society haven’t we moved on from this yet? Give me some depth and entertainment. Expand

The downside of the different countries producing the film can be felt in the casting and the chemical reaction between the roles. The chaotic plot and the pointlessness of many of the supporting roles make this prehistoric Meg not at all scary.
