I love this movie because the characters are unique. The Maze Runner is really different from the book. My favourite character is Mimo because he is very courageous. This film is very thrilling and suspenseful. You should watch it!

I gave it a 5 because it had moments I wanted more, and obviously there is with a sequel to this movie.

Really nice and compelling children's movie, very engaging and good in all respects. It does not have too many defects and is really suitable for the whole family even if at times it is perhaps a little too raw.

I just thinkI actually think that the concept of this movie is very interesting, if it had been more along the lines of Cube or The Platform, but what you get here is an incredibly fast-paced YA movie with sometimes hilariously bad dialogue. I just think it's hilarious that mankind, on the brink of extinction, decides to build a massive maze structure to experiment on some dull teenagers. That's exactly what I'd do. Also, the organization keeping them there is literally called "Wicked", subtle as always. ALSO, Thomas, the generic white male protagonist is apparently incredibly suicidal and decides to run through the maze multiple times, seeing his comrades getting brutally murdered and all that doesn't touch him in the slightest.
The more I think about this movie the more bad things Ifind about it and the more I hate the whole YA genre.

After seeing both franchises, I feel that it is terribly difficult not to give in to the temptation to compare the "Maze Runner" and "Hunger Games" films because they are extraordinarily similar, although "Maze Runner", for several reasons, is much more adult and raises even deeper moral questions.

In "Hunger Games", we saw a dystopian future in a kind of new Roman Empire where a dictator, in a centralist megalopolis called, simply, Capital, throws young couples into an arena to fight to the death, as if they were gladiators. Well, this film gives us almost the same thing, with slight changes: the arena is a maze, we don't know what puts the kids in there, and we don't know what's outside the maze, but it doesn't seem like anything good. However, the point where the film actually gains an important advantage is the mystery factor: like Thomas, we, the audience, do not know anything of what is happening, and we will have to follow the boys to find out. Another thing that I found interesting is the way in which the film is concerned with showing and developing young people's relationships with each other: we have suspicion, admiration, conflicts and, after a certain moment, crossed love interests.

The film features a number of young actors, but almost all are safe bets and have already proven their talent in other works. This is the case of Dylan O'Brian, the protagonist, and the actors Aml Ameen, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. The cast's performance is quite good, and they are very committed to their characters. I really liked the work of O'Brian, Lee and Will Poulter, I think they are the strongest actors in the film. Scodelario is an interesting actress, but I think that in this film she didn't have much to do besides being the love interest of almost the entire cast.

The film has excellent production values and there is a lot of money tied up in high quality CGI that makes the maze look like an amazing death machine, made by someone who can only be mad. The biomechanical creatures that inhabit the maze are equally extraordinary and intimidating. The film has excellent cinematography, is visually magnificent and makes the most of light and colors. The soundtrack also deserves a mention. Composed by John Paesano, whom I did not know, it is an intense soundtrack, with an epic and deep sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The concept of the movie is great there's no denying that. However, the acting portrayed is absolutely awful especially from Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) every time I see him run I want to chop his legs off to not see another second of it. It's so over exaggerated just run normally for god sake. Not to mention his awful performance overall along with the other actors in this movie. Shambolic. Expand

I also thought the pacing was totally off in the second half. The film came to a grinding halt and failed to get even interesting in the slightest, It was almost too predictable IMO.

And it kind of sucks because I enjoyed the cast and the premise, at first, but as the film went on, I kind of lost interest. They didn't do a good enough job carrying your interest throughout and maintaining the mystery.

Only saving grace is that the boys are earnest and too young to know the disaster they are creating so are somewhat endearing in their stupidity to sign on for this train wreck. It kept you guessing and wondering what was in the maze and how all of the characters got there in the first place. However, when Thomas finally enters the maze is where the film gets terribly bad... the maze's mystery is a disappointment and it leaves you to thinking of why "nobody survives a night in the maze." This film is packed throughout with the character's stupidity; the film doesn't develop characters well either. Expand

‘The Maze Runner’ by James Dashner is a film of dystopia. It’s really spectacular film for teenagers. Trailers prior to its release left me in two minds but I was thoroughly enthralled.
The cast includes familiar actors such as: Will Poulter (Gally), Dylan O’Brien (Thomas),Thomas Sangster (Newt) and Blake Cooper as the quirky Chuck. In Summary the story follows a group of boys (Gladers) who live in a glade (special settlement) positioned in the centre of a giant maze. They are unaware of the reason why and of whom they are because their memory has been altered. The glade is protected by a wall to the maze which closes at night concealing deadly monsters known as grievers. Runners of the maze try to find an exit but are unsuccessful despite 2 years of searching until the main character Thomas arrives who is sent to reveal the hope of escape.
Sometimes it can be difficult to see the film version of a book where characters/settings aren’t as you imagined or the storyline isn’t quite the same but I was pleasantly surprised. The cast and scene worked well and despite the slight difference in storyline the main body of events were present. Fortunately, I read the book after the film. So I could enjoy watching “The Maze Runner”. Overall the casting was brilliant, the storyline was thrilling and the grievers were frightening but I would like to see more details and elements according to the book. So if you’re going to read this book, I’ll highly recommend you firstly to watch the film.

I was so excited hearing that there was going to be a movie based on the book. I feel like if there were no book to compare this movie with the movie would have done just fine. There were so many changes to the story in the movie than the story in the book.
Changes:
1) Thomas and Teresa in the book could communicate through each others minds.
2) Instead of them using a camera (or whatever thing they took out of the Grievers) they find a hole that is very well hidden to escape the maze.
3)They do not get picked up on a helicopter, instead it was a bus.
There are a lot more changes in this movie, but these are the ones that annoyed me the most.
Now the sequel is out I don't even plan to see it knowing how the story will probably be about 80% changed from the book just like before, which completely destroys the storyline. Although the acting was great I feel like the movie was not put together as well as it should have.

This movie had something going for it in the beginning, with its tribalism and the promise of an interesting journey ahead. This was completely destroyed by the ending and ridiculous cybernetic monsters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bit cheesy and predictable in places but the action sequences are amazing and special affects. It'll leave you wanting to find out what happens next, doesn't talk down to kids and actually very scary in parts, also leaving you gripping the edges of your seat and heart racing, very interesting twist at the end that I hope they'll explain more on and go into the issues of morality of WICKED in the next movie, that was hinted about near the end and generally is a good movie, not the best movie ever but still a pretty good one and one I wouldn't mind watching again. Nothing to scream and shout about but a still a very entertaining watch. Expand

Of course, I like movies of this theme, and so it's going to earn some points merely for that. There are good parts of it, but in other ways, it's implausible. And maybe it should be called "Maize Runner", because it has a lot of corniness.

Although we saw similar plots before, I have to say that there was something new in this one. It was not all repetitive from the previous films of the same kind, it had something new in it. Those big spiders we saw before in some other films, I can not recall which ones but some similar animals were shown all the time in other sci fi films. The maze was spectacular and scenes inside were great. I really enjoyed it.

Acting was good for the teen actors, I especially got fond of the character of the chubby little boy.

All in all I have to recommend this film, especially to the crowds who enjoy sci fi films. Go for it!

"The Maze Runner" is a pointless movie; a non-sensical plot, terrible acting from B-list actors, and the usual cliffhanger ending that probably will (and did) bring up a sequel to follow up to this film. Nothing really to see here.

Reminds me of M.Night Shymalans "The Village". Decent beginning, but once the plot is revealed, becomes really stupid. (I liked the Village better.)

This movie also has some really dumb dialogue and apparently clueless characters, to try to painfully make the main character seem like the only "smart" one, but its not even believable the level of stupidity the characters encompass early on. It was OK for the first 20-40 mins and was all downhill from there. Very mediocre. Worth seeing if you really like YA sci-fi films with semi-bad endings.

There is absolutely nothing in the whole movie that carries any weight. The actors are mediocre, the characters they play are hare-brained and everything around them makes no sense at all. None of the characters act even remotely like a human being. They keep secrets for secrets' sake, conceal important information from each other for the hack of it and eventually the whole story is artificially revealed to be complete and utter nonsense with the sole purpose of luring more naive viewers into watching the next movie. To make all that even worse, even the movie itself lies to the audience. Things are stated that clearly aren't true. The maze is said to be changing, yet for the most part it is not and people are mapping it. Rules just established a moment before are broken as if they meant nothing, which is among the biggest problems of the film, because they really don't. Nothing in the movie matters, starting with the fact that the characters are barely characters at all. All in all it is a complete waste of time. Expand

Essentially, modern Lord of the Flies. Spirited performances wasted in service of typical characterizations, resulting in minimal investment. For what is essentially a locked-room movie, there aren't many twists

Better writing could have made this a winner.

Instead of him dying by a knife wound from Gally, he dies a from a gun shot. Also in the movie, Thomas was ignorant at the beginning. They changed how Teresa escape and meet Thomas. They also changed how they found out about "WICKED". They also changed "WICKED" into "WCKD". It's like the director didn't even f***ing read the book. Did he/she get someone to read book and make the movie by memory? This is the last time I even watch a movie based on a book. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Extremely lame movie most of the time. It begins with a lot of tension which gets lost immediately because of the way the movie focuses on the relationship of the members of the maze prison. This is done by using an extremely high amount of teeny clichés and bad voice acting it almost made me quit the damn thing. The only interesting part of the movie is when they first enter the maze. All that comes after is simply bad story leading to them finding out who's behind the maze and seriously that's so full of illogic crap i wont even write about it. 2/10 because most of the gang died in the end. I enjoyed that. Expand

I honestly think it may be one of my most underrated movies ever seen. There are several good things about this movie that many people find bad, and I just don't understand why. Here's a list of what I find compelling:

+Great performance by Dylan O' Brien and the other actors/actresses

+Pretty good story (one might say that it is overused and a mere copy of The Hunger Games, but I enjoyed it and found several differences)

+Relatively believable drama

+Orgasmic visuals

+The "Maze at Night" scene (fight me)

It's far from perfect and nothing close to the books, but a movie cannot be judged by how accurate to a book it is. The ending is lame, yes; I do believe that all movies, even if a book-to-film translation, should have a solid ending instead of a cliff-hanger.
But I do have to say, The Maze Runner was a blast. I may have what people call "a different (or even bad) taste" because I actually DO enjoy this movie better than The Hunger Games and Divergent (especially Divergent), but I'll go ahead and give The Maze Runner a double-thumbs-up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great visuals and action sequences, had me on the edge of my seat when we were in the maze, but left me rolling my eyes most of the time when we weren't. Heavy on exposition, light on character, curious in it's heavily biased gender commentary? I felt the actors had very little to work with in terms of depth, and the more we learn about the world of Maze Runner, the more complete nonsense it is. Maybe instead of building a multi-billion dollar maze armed with two ton bionic scorpion monsters, WCKD could have better focused its funds building idyllic green glades for apocalypse survivors to live in? Gally changed his mind last minute, got through the maze on his own without the key so he could...??? Hold them at gunpoint, spouting meaningless maze rhetoric? Manipulate us into caring that one more maze kid predictably died after like ten of them just got ripped into bloody pieces? O'Brien is a talented actor but he can only do so much in yet another clichéd "chosen one" narrative that has no interest in creating unique or interesting characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Seems to be riding the wave of the "let's make a movie out of a series of books and target it to teenagers for some reason" craze that people turned into a thing after Harry Potter and possibly LOTR. The movie was actually halfway decent, with an interesting, shifting maze to explore, and a bizarre scenario in which the characters found themselves. Too bad the movie spent about 60% of its time focused on the encampment, rather than out exploring the maze. Also, I was very upset that we only got to see the characters learn and uncover secrets of the maze rather than getting to uncover the mysteries ourselves. Rather than present any sort of mystery to the audience for any length of time, it felt like we were quickly shown solutions to mysteries in hindsight, or in passing. The maze exploration was the best part of the movie, but only accounted for about 5% of it. Another 25% of the movie was action sequences that were also halfway decent, but didn't substitute for much less budget-intensive mystery, suspense or exploration.

The vast majority of the acting and drama was of a made-for-TV style and wasted frames of the movie; the black guy was the worst actor I think I've ever seen in a movie, using "black sounding" lines that felt forced and totally unrealistic: way too friendly for how little he knew the new recruit. Unrelatedly, at the end, as the group stormed the command center with only sticks and primitive found objects, they discover a massacre and handguns are lying in reach of the dead. Rather than, you know, upgrade from STICK to GUN, their primary concern is to gently kick the guns away from the dead. Oh yeah, that's totally what I would have done. It should have been a weapon upgrade shopping spree moment, but instead, it was the common "kick the gun away" routine / gesture on autopilot even though it made absolutely no sense for them to do that there. Then someone got killed.

I'd watch a sequel, though.

Im not going to pretend i've read the book, but the film was disappointing. So many things were poorly done, the way the group are always vague to the main character because instead of them saying what normal people say they have to be vague just to add more pointless mystery. The acting of a lot of these actors is also fairly poor and the ending "video" is a complete **** of exposition for no other reason than to try and get some interest in you going to the cinema to see the impending sequel. As it ends and shows the vastness of the maze you begin to realise that these people built an immensely large maze in hope that it may tell them something about why these children are immune. In my opinion if I was asked to describe the film in one word it would be "Absurd" Expand

I have no idea about the music but it's sometimes nonexistent as I think it was intended that way. However, for those wondering if they should watch this film or not, the movie is extremely as random as the maze itself and the plot goes from alright to crazy.

Be warned about this movie and enjoy the intense action that exists. I kept giving this movie a chance throughout the duration of it but I ended up sorely disappointed. I may I have set the expectation a bit too high and didn't read the book.

The movie is about the main character of the film wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. This movie started off pretty good with the opening scene, but then the movie turns into a rip-off of other franchise. The acting was pretty good in the movie and the characters are fine, but the ending has to be the worst ending that I have seen this year. I was hoping that like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner would be a page for page telling of the story, but it wasn't and in fact several important elements crucial to the sequels were left out. The story begins with a boy named Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) waking up in an elevator, surrounded by dozens of other boys. Thomas has no memory other than his name and quickly learns that none of the other boys do either. They are all trapped in the middle of a maze with no idea why or how to escape. This film was done well, but compared to the book, it is like a seventh graders book report. All the players are the same and the events are relatively the same, but all those little things that made this series so special and unique were left out. The film is just a simple story with some terrific special effects, but the book was really extraordinary and non-readers will never have any idea of just how good this movie could have been. Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien stars and really was the perfect choice to play Thomas. Unlike some of the other casting choices, O'Brien really seems to jump right from the pages to the screen in a defining role that almost seemed made for him. Thomas was the same in the movie as he was in the book, but he was the only one. It's very hard to be objective about this, because if I hadn't read the book, I still would have enjoyed the film, but realizing just how much of the story is missing really bothers me and skewed my review of the film. The story is unique, the special effects are great, and their some very good young actors here, I still highly recommend The Maze Runner, but if you are a reader and you enjoy Science Fiction, by all means read the book first. But there's this one part near the end if you get disgusted real easy (kinda a light spoiler) where theres this disease that they show at the end of the movie that has this guy who has a brain disease (don't remember that much) and he dosent have any skin. No, it is not great, with only very young actors in the cast the performances are weak (except for the leading actor maybe), the movie ends without really explaining anything and it is prepared for a sequel. It will not move you or stand the test of time. But it is surprisingly entertaining but slightly better than a similar film released the same year like Divergent. It was not needed to see it in theaters but you can stream it and you will have a good time. Expand

EvenDarker than your average YA book turned movie. It starts off kind of slow and it takes a bit to get into Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) as the lead, but once things get going it's an entertaining movie that keeps you interested in the mystery. Even if this movie seems solely created for setting up big stuff in a sequel.

It's got a talented cast playing these strong, likable group characters. There's also some nice action and a cool dystopian world that I wanted to learn more about. The problem is that it doesn't really answer any questions at all. What little explanations it does offer make no sense and just leave you with even more questions. Especially when you find out everything you have been told might be a lie.

This sort of vague progression seems only in place to set things up for a sequel. Whether or not it's like that in the book I cannot tell you as I have not read it. However even if it did this type of formula doesn't work too well for this movie. It doesn't ruin it, but certainly hurts the overall experience.

Still it's an enjoyable watch. One that is sure to please fans of movies like the Hunger Games series and Divergent. Even better is that it isn't preaching the same message of non-conformity that many other similar movies are. It's more wrapped up in it's own thing. Overall a solid first outing that has left me wanting more, even if mostly for the wrong reasons. I'll be coming back for the answers to questions, some of which this movie should have offered. I still think it's a solid flick though.

It builds up a very mysterious story that you are going to want to unravel all the way through. The plot sometimes can seem a little dumb, but the film is still great. The acting is very nice, great casting, good script and nicely-done directing. There are going to be maybe some things that you won't understand, but there's no problem with that because the story doesn't end in this movie, it prepares you for a sequel (one that I really hope that comes to life). I would have liked they explained much more things, though, but that's ok compared to how awesome this movie is. Expand

A total disappointment, being a fan of the novel I was let down entirely. Bad acting, the story was not followed well, it practically made no sense, I do NOT recommend.

"The Maze Runner" came out and I watched it yesterday. So, is it better than most of average YA fare? Absolutely yes. Although it's not refreshing as it should be (mostly because of the exposition which I think it's too much), the movie does a commendable job at letting the actors give excellent performances and the director smartly offers some stunning visuals.

A boy wakes up in an elevator with no recollection of his name, where he comes from, or where he is. As he emerges from the earth, he finds himself in a community of boys, living in a glade. As the boy slowly starts unearthing memories, such as his name, Thomas, he also finds out more sinister things from the other boys about the place he's landed. The boys are held prisoners within the centre of a gigantic maze, and for three years they've been looking for a way out. And now it's up to Thomas to find that way. But the road isn't going to be easy, as any who dares enter the maze finds himself hunted by the Grievers.

Like I said earlier in this review, the acting and the directing are pretty good. Wes Ball seems to have an understanding of the movie's pace. As the movie flows throughout the movie, we get to understand the characters and the build up of what it's going on the maze. I perfectly understood the story thanks to its sweet premise. There is one intense scene where Thomas is trying to hide so that the Griever can't see him, and I loved that part. I also like the tone and the visual effects.

Overall, it was pretty enjoyable and if you're a fan of "Young Adult" movie, you will love the sequel set-up, YES, there is going to be a sequel. The ending will explain that. As I was saying, it gives occasionally expository dialogue, but the movie is well acted, nicely directed and the atmosphere is just appealing.

And I'm gonna give this movie a 6.5/10.
