It's video game-esque sense of strategy to it makes it rich in science and just glorious shots of 'Mars' panned out like a real planet. THe acting is superb with Matt Damon believably delivering his lines and perfectly embodying a man stranded on Mars, and the rest of the cast is also sublime. It's hard to see a sci-fi movie that doubles as a comedy, and this one is spot on. Matt Damon's role as Mark Watney is absolutely wonderful. You just can't help but love him and care for him. He just really draws you in from start to finish. The cinematography is lovely as well. Everything just feels so elegant and engaging. I couldn't ask for more this year! Highly recommended Expand

Each movie has their own distinct style and can be enjoyed for different reasons. Of the four, The Martian is probably the most light-hearted and fun to watch, but don't let my words fool you. There are some insanely intense scenes to be found here. Based on the novel of the same name, The Martian is about astronaut Mark Watney who is presumed dead after a violent storm and left behind by the crew. He actually lives and must survive on Mars for months with meager supplies and his own ingenuity. Ridley Scott directed this film, and he was desperately in need of a success after the financial and commercial disappointments of Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counsler. Luckily, he delivers one of his most spectacular movies to date that's capable of making you laugh and putting you on the edge of your seat. The final act of the film is particularly nail-biting, drawing comparisons to some of Gravity's most terrifying scenes. But what makes The Martian such a hit is its heart. Besides its great humor and amazing characters, it emphasizes the value and integrity of the human spirit. It may not go into the more philosophical implications of those themes too much, but when a movie is this well crafted, that hardly matters. The Martian is up there with the other great sci-fi epics of recent years, and it's certainly one of the best films of the year. Expand

That said it came close enough that there is no reason to nitpick on any little thing just to find fault with it. This coming from someone who read the book before the film was even announced. Adaptations always have a disadvantage to the book reader audience but they pulled it off well enough that I have no complaints even if the improvised measurement of "pirate-ninjas" was left out. :P

The film is about some astronauts who after a storm blast off the planet Mars but they leave behind Mark Watney as he is presumed dead.He turns out to have survived the storm and with only a few supplies and food for counted days,he must use science and grow food in a place where nothing grows in order to survive until the next rescue mission comes for him.
I seriously loved this movie, the performances are all very great, especially Matt Damon who gives the performance of a lifetime. He seems very much committed to the role and he is full of emotion that equals to a great and Oscar-worthy performance.
Ridley Scott does an incredible job here with the way that he decides to take on the story and also the ending is just brilliant and very well directed.
The score by Harry Gregson-Williams is also very haunting and memorable but what stands out the most here is the incredibly amazing cinematography by Dariusz Wolski.
The Mars scenes look great and they just feel real, them mixed with the very good visual effects just make for the perfect once in a lifetime experience.
I really enjoyed The Martian and it's certainly one of the best movies of 2015.Ridley Scott is back with a bang.

But you then have to compensate and calculate the leap years also to which would be 18.75 Leap Years in a 75 year span. To which the total then equals to 657,450 Hours.

Take into account all the maths I just spoke about and you got an idea of how this movie works on every detail. It truly is the very best parts of MacGyver’s and Burn Notice’s gadget moments rolled into a movie.

To have just under 3 measly hours take over your life and engross you the entire time does not seem such a feat when compared to those 75 years. But it is. I do not think I blinked much during the course of its 2hrs and 40 minute Runtime.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

I cannot even fathom touching the surface of how almost flawless this film is. How everything Watney does to stay alive feels real. This all makes sense on a massive, realistic scale. This could be very possible. The science and mathematics they do in this film makes you feel so underwhelmingly minor in the scale of things. I felt extremely stupid for the most part. But it wasn't the type of stupidity I hated. I envied every single moment of it and it kind of made me want to go back and focus in science and math class more than I did. These Scientists that work for the real NASA are genius.

To think The Martian actually all came from, apparently, an equally amazing book by Peter Weir is even more incredible.

The scale of its screenplay (written by Drew Goddard of Cabin In The Woods & Daredevil Tv Series) is well above par. It is a fine form of cinema and a brilliant return to form for Ridley Scott.

I hate movies that waste great characters, funny ones, smart ones, ones that make you say 'I wish we had seen more of them in the film'. But here, every single character is used so well on a scale that works. I cannot say too much about anything in this film. It needs to be experienced before a spoiler talk. Suffice to say, you can see this film in 2D or 3D (I saw it in 2D). The second half of this film, with its outstanding ending, should be a 3D Fever dream. However there is 2 hours roughly, worth of nothing that would come close to a massive 3D experience. So do not worry too much as both options still leave you loving it either choice you make.

Harry Gregson Williams scores the music and I have to note his work here. In this movie, just as in many of my fave scores (Metal Gear Solid 3 video game and Armageddon movie), it is moving and without it, a lot of Matt Damon’s alone screen time might not have worked the same magic it did.

Matt Damon really deserves something amazing from this film. To actually invest 3 quarters of a film with nothing but one actor on screen is a hell of an accomplishment. See This Movie! It is one people will be talking about and others will aspire to be like for many years to come.

The Martian is an inspiring, interesting and really enjoyable movie.

Ridley Scott knocked it out of the park with this movie, the cinematography is phenomenal, Matt Damon gives one of his best performances to date, I was skeptical going into this movie as I thought "how could this movie be any good if I'm watching one guy on his own, talking to no one but himself (like tarzan) be any good?" I was wrong, it wasn't like Tarzan, yes I know it's a terrible pun/joke.

Mark Watney is a **** idol in this movie, when people say "he makes the best out of a bad situation" they're not joshing you he is truly inspiring and I'd rather more characters like him in movies rather than the ones that always get depressed about midway through because of something happening or something they've done, and have this over indulgent crying scene, I don't care about that **** I'd rather a movie that is fun, instead of ones that have a **** ton of crying in them.

This movie is impeccable, it's not perfect by all means, I got a little annoyed by the fact it had to cut forward at the end, (you'll understand if you've seen it) but I see why they did it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie, a great break from those depressed characters we get in every single movie about surviving.. This movie made me want to get the book, in fact, next time i go into a store, I'm going to go into the book shop and buy this book. I loved the movie, sure it has a few problems but I have enjoyed this far more than any other movie I had seen since the Imitation Game.

In my opinion this movie should get a nomination for best picture and I honest to god believe at this moment in time, it should get it.

The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Drew Goddard. It stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kirsten Wiig and a slew of other equally talented actors.

The Martian is about manned mission to Mars in which Astronaut Mark Watney(Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Ridley Scott did it again offering one of the best science fiction movies of this century. After Blade Runner, my personal Favorite of his, and a slew of if-fie movies I wasn't sure how he would ever meet his standard. Well He did!

Scott offers some of the best direction I have ever seen in a science fiction movie. With intense camera-work Scott unleashes the sheer despair of being four years away from one's family, friends, and and most of all planet, while keeping glimmers of hope through out. This works hand in hand with the awesome cinematography done beautifully by Dariusz Wolski. A true beauty technically it holds up just as well in script and acting. My personal favorite scene in the movie was second to last scene in the movie. I was terrified but enthralled.

The script from this movie was brilliant. Excellent Work From Goddard made the movie gripping as well as intellectual. With actual scientific ideas to boot this movie is very hard to pull apart. It holds not only great science fiction but comedy so funny I found myself crying at the hilarity of the moment. With inside joke galore, this was a great script.

Finally the acting. Matt Damon was magnificent in the role of Mark Watney, demonstrating is comic chops and his dramatic finesse. He was optimistic, funny and smart, three characteristics it takes to pull of a role like this.I enjoyed Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Wiig, Kate Mara, and Micheal Pena. I loved Jeff Daniels' somber but caring portrayal of his character. One of my favorite characters was that of Rich Pummel, played by Donald Glover. He was magnetic in the part for such a small role. My favorite character in the movie was Vincent Kapoor played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He was highly intelligent, witty, charming and resourceful.

With a tight script, direction, cinematography, acting and no glaring issues, I am forced to do this. The Martian Gets an A+. The Martian is truly out of this world.

It's a science fiction movie (Mars, duh) with desperation (alone with limited supplies), but also shows the humanity of the world as everyone pitches in to bring him home (a la Apollo 13.) The man on Mars is Mark Watney, and since he enters a daily journal, he lets us know what he's thinking so we don't have a narrator or voice over (clever use of technology.) To keep the mood going up and down, Mark has humorous comments (like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.) All in all, a well put together, enjoyable movie. Expand

Ridley Scott really shows again that he can make a good movie after the two not so good movies he made called The Counselor and Exodus: Gods And Kings. The acting is phenomenal (Matt Damon is oscar worthy on every level), the cinematography and special effects are beautiful, the writing is excellent and there is some really good tension, humour and drama. This movie is so diverse that Science-Fiction fans will love it, drama fans will love it and just the movie fan in general will love it. The music used in the movie which takes up a great portion of the original soundtrack is from the 80 's; songs like Waterloo from ABBA or Rock the boat from the Hues Corporation really set the tone for this movie. The movie's atmosphere was just so great you just want this movie over and over again. And that brings me to my only little flaw with the movie (this really not a big thing). Which is that the movie's re-watch ability is not that high because the movie is over two hours and it also really feels like a long movie. So when you've already watched this movie you're just going to wait for the parts of the movie you really liked the first time you watched it. The rest of the movie is just a bit boring then, because it's a bit repetitive a times too. Which obviously is due to the slow phasing (which is not a bad thing) and the same environments the movie takes place in Expand

For astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) in The Martian, that nightmare has become reality. After a mission goes horribly wrong, Watney must survive alone on Mars with limited life support and find a way to communicate to NASA that he is still alive. He uses his knowledge and botany expertise to come up with endless MacGyver-esque solutions to problem the planet has to throw at him.

While The Martian predominantly follows Mark during his struggle for survival, the scenes of NASA back on Earth really bring everything together, and prevent the movie from being just two and a half hours of Matt Damon talking to himself. As great as Damon was, the actor who really stole the show was Donald Glover, who plays astrophysicist Rich Purnell. Glover was only in a few scenes, unfortunately, but he gave us all the comic relief that Damon’s cheesy one-liners failed to provide.

The stunning special effects and absolutely beautiful soundtrack combined to create a perfect atmosphere and an incredibly immersive experience, and I often felt as if I was actually there. Some would point out that the raging storm at the beginning of the movie would be impossible in Mars’ atmosphere. While that is true, it didn’t break the immersion for me at all since the rest of the movie is extremely scientifically accurate. As well-done as this movie is, however, the immersion was broken at times, mainly during Damon’s aforementioned one-liners. I cringed when he muttered, **** you, Mars,” to himself, and even more so when he said, “I’m gonna have to science the **** out of this.” The lines seemed forced and, amongst a few other lines, tarnished an otherwise-perfect script. It really took away from the serious tone that the rest of the movie had established. That being said, if 10 cheesy lines are all I have to complain about in a 2.5-hour movie, I’d say it turned out pretty well.

Between the fantastic cast, awe-inspiring special effects, amazing soundtrack, and near-perfect script, director Ridley Scott made me almost wish I was stranded on Mars right alongside Mark Watney. The Martian is an absolute must-see and I give it 5 stars out of 5.

There is only one genuine scientific error in the story, and it was committed knowingly and deliberately as a plot device to strand astronaut Mark Watney: the atmospheric pressure on Mars is so low that the fiercest sandstorms could barely flutter a flag, let alone do the damage portrayed in the opening sequence. The only other quibbles involve things that we know more about today (thanks to NASA orbiters and rovers) than we did when Weir started writing: Mars does have tiny amount of liquid water at places on its surface, but it's hypersaline and undoubtedly full of toxic perchlorates; the dirt Watney wallows in would probably also have enough perchlorate in it to poison him; putting your intestinal bacteria into Martian soil, on Mars, is a major no-no according to international treaties about planetary protection: we still don't know whether Mars has any bacteria of its own, and we don't want to confuse the issue by contaminating the place with E. coli. Also, although the terrain at the novel's landing site looks smooth in maps made from orbit, in high-res view it turns out to be covered with huge potholes that would make driving vehicles difficult. And finally, the orbital maneuvers at the end of the novel, involving releasing air and flying "like Iron Man" are more comic book than physics book. But those are "errors" only uber-nerds would cite. The novel is as hard as science fiction ever gets. The most improbable idea in it is that the US Congress would ever fund NASA enough to do these things, but NASA probably could do them were it given the funds.

The movie stays about as close as it can to the novel, given that some of the explanations need to be simplified and some of Watney's language and humor expurgated for American audiences. So if you like rock-hard sci fi about survival on the real Mars -- with no aliens or monsters, but lots of "I'm going to science the hell out of this", you will love this movie.

It reminds me of the old action adventure movies--- lots of "cliffhanging" (not literally) scenes--- verging on the implausible-- but a lot of fun. But, what makes this different, is how thoughtfully it approaches not just science and technology, but rationality in general. It really is an advertisement for "thinking" --- facing the facts and thinking the problem through. Not something very popular in America's political landscape these days--- especially among the Greedpublican cult.

As they used to say, for a rollicking good time, go see The Martian.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Matthew Paige Damon (I hate abbreviate like "Matt" seems GAY, **** When we'll no longer freshness and call the correct name?), managed to overcome in this film.
Fox don't make more good films like "Titanic" and "Fight Club" and so on, Warner in the command.
This film won't compete to oscar, (except for special effects, which are few) but shows a different perspective as it was with Gravity and Interstellar covering other aspects, the limit of human beings in certain situations. I do not see how fantasy film as others clowns have said.
Fantasy to my way of seeing is "Tomorrowland" and all alienation from Disney! (no forget "Twilight zone", this bull****, I think so some day will forget this **** to
fifth category from hell) Alias the only fantasy is that man never walked on the moon !!! It is the purest reality !! Tactic of war, hollywood's show in the cold war.
Man on the moon?
NEVER! Don't forget! NEVER! Just a freak show in the labs from HOlly Youdy.
A true history hurt some like you, but the better off all is knowledge of reality.

Going in i was afraid this movie was somehow going to be bad since Ridley Scott hasn't done a deal of great things since Gladiator, so me expectations were low, and on top of that i was prepared to witness an incredibly depressing and dower but great survival story (like The Revenant), but man was i wrong, I had some of the most fun watching this movie, i laughed so surprisingly hard at many points throughout the film, man what a special treat.

When a movie like this can achieve both incredible, emotionally driven story and acting (Matt Damon was phenomenal by the way, also one of the best in years for him) and be hilarious, uplifting and witty at many points throughout the film, a movie like this gets my vote as (one of the) Best Picture ('s) of the year.

It's a movie you can stay completely invested in. It's human and just all around fantastic. Minor shortcomings come in the form of some slower moments, but even in these moments the stellar writing takes control and makes it all worthwhile. Even watching Damon actually doing the work necessary to completing his tasks is something I was interested in watching.

It's just an all around excellent movie. One where all of the pieces come together into an intensely likable whole. It's a movie I highly recommend even to the point where I would say it's a must watch. Truly deserving of all the praise it has received.

A powerful, inspiring and possibly full of future awards story of Saving Matt Damon, in space!

There's one common message on this year's cinematic experience: if you find yourself at hostile sci-fi world, see Charlize Theron (Furiosa) or Matt Damon for a lovely road trip. The Martian is an uplifting castaway tale on Mars. Brilliantly executed and acted, it's a triumphant story of a man surviving on his wit and sheer positive determination on live.

The saying "he might as well be on the moon" doesn't apply to Mark Watney (Matt Damon) as he's stranded on a world much farther. After a critical failure on space mission leaves him alone on Mars, he must overcome multitude of problems to keep himself and the hope of rescue alive.

For a desolated story, The Martian is incredibly inspiring. Much of it charm depends entirely on Matt's performance, his effort keeps the movie light and humorous even though tougher times linger just steps or miles away. It probably wouldn't have worked with lesser actor, not just with the dialogues but physical transformation. He brings strangely infectious joy instead of constant wallowing. The positive and identifiable attitude of his character will translate well to audience.

This is not only a solo mission since there's also perspectives of people working on our planet. The assembly of cast is very good. From Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Jeff Daniels and many others, these personalities are highly memorable. They make the arduous and lengthy process of space travel into an engaging spectacle. While not everyone has contact with the solitary astronaut, they convincingly unite on the larger-than-life endeavor.

Visual is amazing. This is not the beast Gravity was, but when it gets going, it's utterly beautiful and also bizarrely captivating since Mars is a barren soil. At times it appears that Matt Damon walks across red desert which is so strange but still give the feeling that it probably exist somewhere. The amount of details on science is amazing, it feels like an inviting project or a trip audience could take with these characters. The bits of pop culture reference from comics or movies are icing of the frosty cake.

The Martian is what a movie should strive to be, an amazingly told story of men against their predicament. It's incredibly inspiring, highly enjoyable and simply unworldly.

Matt Damon does the perfect job as a fantastic main character to follow the film through, with whom you share his pain, anguish and eventual joy. What's refreshing about the film is how positive it is, and how it has a good amount of comedy in the script. That, along with immense cinematography and a perfectly atmospheric score, puts it above a lot of other sci-fi films, such as Gravity.

89/100.

This is a movie about survival and problem solving. I enjoyed the scientific focus of the story of a man marooned on Mars and desperate to survive and be rescued. I have always enjoyed Ridley Scott's movies and was excited to see this when I realized that he directed this. This is a 2 hr and 20 minute movie, but not once did I look at my watch. Matt Damon did a great job in the lead role. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A brilliant film and a grand return by Ridley Scott. We both want to see it again. Matt Damon is a standout and the main cast was great. Some slight missteps by the characters played by Sean Bean and Donald Glover but nothing major that I could not forgive.

I read the book before seeing the film so the changes to the final moments of the rescue in the film were slightly jarring. The way he was rescued in the book was perfectly fine so I do not understand why they felt the need to change that in the film to a far less realistic rescue that is even more implausible. That was my only real negative for this film and stopped this being a 10/10 for me.

The length of the film did not worry us. At no stage did we feel things drag on. If anything there was quite a bit of content cut from the book but I feel it did not damage the film. The way Mars itself was filmed (CGI, etc) was beautiful and haunting at the same time. Full credits to the cinematographer.

Lastly we were worried US patriotism would infect this film but it was downplayed quite a bit. For us the film is a 9/10 and we will definitely see it again.

The man has not made a good film since Kingdom of Heaven in 2005, so no way this one will turn out well, right? Wrong and thank God for that. One of the funniest, exciting, and most well crafted, films of the year, The Martian will stand tall amongst the heavy hitters of 2015. Matt Damon is fantastic, as is the entire ensemble cast, namely Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott who's return to science fiction is most certainly a welcome one, as he manages to perfectly manage the blending of Mark Watney's colorful personality with the hard science, without getting bogged down in the details. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the breathtaking cinematography. The shots taking place on Mars and in the ship are perfection, as are the visual effects, which are truly stunning. One of the best science fiction films of the century, The Martian is an enjoyable, masterfully made, and visually spectacular, film that deserves its praise and will hopefully net some additional recognition for its star, who turns in one of the best performances of his career. The Martian is one of the most anticipated movies this year for me that turns out to be very entertaining and definitely one of the best so far in 2015.
The cast in this movie is huge, there are a lot of big names and talented newcomers. Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor are among the best performance in this movie. Ridley Scott did a really great job directing this movie as well as Drew Goddard for writing the screenplay. The movie is beautifully shot especially for the Mars and the space stuff. I didn't see it in 3D, and didn't think it would make a lot more differences since there are more "non-space" scenes than I expected. But I wouldn't mind watching it again in 3D as it is that enjoyable movie you could watch many times.
The writing in The Martian is good enough to keep you on the edge of your seat given how predictable the ending of this movie is. Few surprises are thrown here and there which is exciting. There is a lot of funny stuff that keeps this movie light and family friendly. For a sci-fi movie, there sure is a lot of science in this movie. For a person who knows just a little about science, this movie left me in awe watching what Mark Watney and NASA could do in a very messed-up situation one could imagine. This is also one of the weakness of this movie for me because with a lot of emphasizing in the science aspect, this movie lacks of depth for Mark Watney as the main character of this movie. I would love to see more beyond Mark Watney's optimism and his sense of humor and what is going on his mind that would make me not only root for him but also empathize for him just like what Gravity did with Sandra Bullock character. However, it is still very refreshing to me personally to see this optimistic character in a movie these days.

It's a light toned, clever, visually impressive, well acted movie. It's always engaging and you'll never be bored with the outside the box ways Matt Damon adapts to his situation. It's perfectly paced, has a great cast, and is unusually fun for Scott. It really didn't even feel like a Ridley Scott movie, because in terms of mood and tone it's the antithesis of the darkness from Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator... to almost any Scott movie. I don't think it's as good as Alien. I don't think it's as good as the rapturous, and profound Interstellar, but it is one of the best and most enjoyable movies of the year and will go down as another Ridley Scott sci-fi classic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely masterpiece, this is second Interstellar. Fusion of sci-fi and drama movies - fusion of movies like Interstellar, Moon 2112, Gravity and Mission to Mars. Breathtaking.
However, I want to explain why I didn't put 10 mark here.
First, at the end the plot was quite predictable - it was obvious that Mark will survive. After they lost a rocket it was quite clear it could not be for nothing, also no one from his team wont die either - would be very stupid to trade one for another.
Second, thing I disliked most about this movie - after 2 years of isolation he meets with his colleagues like he left them a week ago. He spend 700 days in isolation, this could not pass unnoticed for his mind. Remember Mission to Mars - how the guy left on the planet reacted after he saw his fellows? Interstellar had the same problem, btw.
But still this movie is awesome and worth watching.

The pacingThe acting in this movie is excellent, the zero-gravity special effects are perfect, the design of the equipment and sets are all seemingly perfect as well. You can just about believe that everyone involved is in fact an astronaut. The pacing is good, and keeps you interested, which is fairly difficult for a movie in which so much is just one man against the world; someone definitely learned from Castaway's mistakes and improved on the theme.

Just about the only imperfection is an inexplicable use of an IED to open a door in the movie that leaves you wondering if there was an explanation for why they couldn't just open it some more reasonable and/or sane way, that leaves me wondering if there was actually a valid explanation that got lost in translation from book to movie. Considering the length of the movie, and that this brief setup is the only flaw I can really see... this is a ridiculously well-made movie.

The Martian stays true to it's source material and on it's own, spins a wildly entertaining yarn of human spirit and survival at impossible odds. As a movie, 8/10. But with Matt Damon's terrific acting and Ridley Scott's brilliant directing, 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Martian is a crowd-pleaser of a movie. Less visually spectacular than its obvious comparator, last year's Gravity, but more intriguingly plotted and engagingly acted. The plot is speculative fiction; none of it seems terribly far from the truth, though I'm sure it can be scientifically dissected. Astronaut on Mars mission gets left behind, people try to save him as he struggles to survive in basically a tent. Self-talk, MacGyvering, and adventure ensue.

There are a few missteps, notably that the Earthbound HQ lies to the astronauts for months to conceal that their comrade survived, which strains credulity and is glossed over. As far as acting, Matt Damon makes for a charismatic everyman hero, and some of the supporting cast are strong, notably Donald Glover and Benedict Wong in fun and surprisingly credible mad scientist roles and Mackenzie Davis as an insightful desk jockey. Jessica Chastain, however, was decidedly overpaid for her bit part (despite claims to the contrary), and the spaceship crew in general are not as strong as the ground crew. Sean Bean is in this movie in another missable bit part and (surprise!) does not die at the end.

This being said, the film manages to cram a complex and technical story into a very watchable and understated couple of hours. There's no reason to see it in 3D, but it's definitely worth seeing at a nice theater.

It is Ridley Scotts best film in a while. The legendary directors recent films have been mostly forgettable, but The Martian is an easy addition to his list of classics. The film is so well directed and the visuals are outstanding all of the scenes on Mars are very neat to see especially in 3D. I was completely sold by the look and I don’t think it could’ve been any more real. Matt Damon also gets some redemption in this film after a couple years of performing in average films like the Monuments Men and Elysium. Damon offers his best performance in at least the last 5 years in this movie. His character is certainly a smart one but there is a normal person in there and when you watch him you can almost see yourself in his shoes. His role is also just altogether fun, this is a good movie but it is also a fun movie which does not always happen.

The whole cast really shines here and the whole supporting cast is rounded out with big names. Chiwetel Ejiofor is great in this movie. Its nice to see him in a good role as he has been quiet after his strong role in 12 Years a Slave. Jeff Daniels and Jessica Chastain are great as well and I know there was some worried about similarities to last years blockbuster Interstellar and I’m happy to say that this film really has its own identity despite having some of the same actors involved. I think I still enjoy Interstellar more but this is certainly a film worth watching.
