It's definitely not scientifically accurate at all levels due to minor flaws, but the story mainly focuses on the survival skills and rescue efforts which are presented in a straightforward, entertaining, chilling, educational yet inspiring way. The film is surprisingly funny compared to Interstellar and Gravity thanks to the outstanding performance from Matt Damon who delivers the character's positive attitude overshadowing the fear of being a stranded stranger on the red planet, other strong star-studded cast including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor have solid performances as well as scores composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, not extremely powerful but strong enough to fit into scenes. While it seems to be a rescue mission, the film is able to deliver an important message - regardless the help from the whole world, self-initiation determines the survival opportunity. Overall at a smaller scale and fans perception, The Martian fits perfectly as sequel of 2013's Gravity and prequel to 2014's Interstellar. Expand

The Martian is a thrilling journey into the deep space anchored by
amazing visuals, terrific humor, and great acting. In the recent past Ridley Scott had
been struggling to make a great movie, but he went back to his basics,
and churned out one of the better Sci-Fi movies not just of this year,
but of the past few years. While all actors are good, this movie is the
Matt Damon show, and he shines as a desperate man stranded millions of
miles from home. The film will undeniably be compared to Interstellar,
because the cast and some of the premise are similar, but these are two
very different movies. The amazing special effects, and constant
obstacles make this movie truly thrilling. The Martian is my favorite
of the Space Sci-Fi movies in the recent years, more than Gravity or
Interstellar. The Martian is truly a theater experience, so see it on
the biggest screen you can.

By all means, a return to form from Ridley Scott, who maybe left us a little bit unsatisfied with last year's Exodus. Back to the film, it offers competition for Mad Max, and that is saying A LOT. It manages to be witty, dramatic, charming, somber. There are seamless transitions between those moments in the film. A formidable cast and crew prove plot is in no way a limit for their skills. And Go Matt Damon! He, as expected, delivers a star performance as a (supremely intelligent) man trying to survive the dreadful odds. Every part of this movie is increasingly satisfying (though a cameo by Sigourney Weaver would've been incredible). Think of it as Moon meets Interstellar meets Gravity, just through Ridley Scott's splendid eye for dramatic action with a touch of funny. Expand

Yes, the Alien director has been fairly inconsistent of late but put together a great film in the Martian. Obviously we can't give Scott all the credit because the performances were top notch. Matt Damon was both hilarious and electric in his role as Mark Watney. Also Chiwetel Ejiofor was so good in this movie, and i can definitely see him getting a supporting actor nod for his role. Now lets attend back to my hard on for Mr.Scott. One thing you can always expect when walking into a Ridley Scott film is that it will be visually stunning, and this film is GORGOUS. Mars is a character of its own in this film like Mount Everest is to "Everest". The planet looks like the coolest sandbox you'll ever visit and probably had people checking Expedia for one way trips. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that i they try and tie in his parents at one point late in the film and i just wish there was more to that. His parents seem to be the only family he has on earth and i believe that if they were able to just touch on their relationship just a bit more then that would add a scoop of give a **** for the viewers. Overall the film is great and that con is really just nit picking at what was a well acted, directed, written and shot film. Expand

Matt Damon, I felt a bit like a martian as well, although admittedly you are the bigger star. In what could have easily ended up as Interstellar's backwash, the The Martian holds its own. I've found so many similarities in my life here so I can't imagine a better movie to see at this time in my life. Loneliness, learning how to survive in a new environment. What's missing, however, is the rescue mission. Enough about my life – the plot was pretty much always known yet I was always intrigued by the details. The obstacles from Earth, strained communication, and especially the potatoes. Real-life martian problems are probably the most entertaining part, making us wait in anticipation to see the new innovative ways that the botanist will avoid death yet again. Expand

It is 9/10 because it was 15 mins longer than it was supposed to be. The finale requires a new cut to leave out all the bombing and ironman nonsense. Those did not add to the suspense or the fun factor, rather removed from it.

Probably my favorite movie of 2015 so far, sure Jurrasic World and Ant-Man were amazing, but The Martian is one of the most gripping movies i've ever watched. The characters are great and feel real, they don't feel as if they're the only people that can do it; they feel as if you can relate to them. Also, this film is hilarious, it 's good to see that they can make such a motivational movie and still have some adult humor in it. This movie is amazing, and if you're a fan of science fiction, go watch this movie right now, or if you're reading this in the future, go buy it. It's seriously that good.

The Martian gets a 9/10.

It’s easily one of my favorite films of the year and it’s only October! The movie stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut who gets left behind on Mars and has to survive with limited resources available until help arrives. Damon’s portrayal of the character is stellar! His comic timing and his acting is spot on. The way his character keeps himself positive even during overwhelming odds in which the average Joe would probably lose all hope of survival (on a planet where nothing grows, which Watney himself admits) is extremely enamoring. There is a genuine concern that you feel for the character’s plight. And whenever he achieves something like, being able to establish contact with Earth or grow food, you want to rejoice with him.

The screenplay is brilliant. Usually in these types of movies, people pay to see the stranded guy on the alien planet. And whenever it shifts focus, people tend to turn off and lose interest in whatever is happening. That was NOT the case here. The efforts made by NASA on Earth to help their stranded Astronaut is as interesting to watch as Watney’s exploits on Mars. And all that comes down to a genuinely well written screenplay by Drew Goddard. The dialogues were pretty damn funny and had me in stiches. The material was kept very light without complicating matters a lot but still managed to keep me on edge.

This is a welcome return to form for Ridley Scott. Now I can’t comment on The Counselor or Exodus as I haven’t watched them yet but it is widely known that since American Gangster, he had failed to make a truly great film. This is that great film! An evenly paced, uncomplicated and utterly fun film which proves what Scott is capable of when he’s in his element. The cinematography is beautiful and the CGI is inch perfect. The background score truly is a BACKGROUND score. It doesn’t jarringly blare out and tell you to go “OMG OMG OMG” but complements the visuals perfectly. The 3D aspect of it is brilliant as well. Not since Gravity has a film used 3D this well.

This is a near perfect film. The texts which pop up on screen describing a character or a place were kind of bothersome and unnecessary. The Chinese CNSA cooperating with NASA seemed a bit too convenient and felt like a fantasy on the writers part (maybe he was going for the “Greatness of Human nature during insurmountable odds” but I didn’t really buy it) but that’s just me nitpicking. Go for it. This is a fantastic piece of work. Scott is back. Damon looks to be the man of the moment right now and we may very well have an early contender for Best Actor as well as Best Adapted Screenplay.

What a comeback for Ridley Scott.
Lets first off discuss this director is a risk taker and is either a hit or miss but has always been a visionary.
Adapted from the novel by the same title by Andy Weir, The Martian tells a not so distant story of space exploration on Mars.
Classic man vs. nature structure but told so eloquently.
Matt Damon shines a botanist left alone on Mars for approximately 500 SOLS (Mars days) and you get fluid scenes between the crew that left him, NASA back at Earth trying to bring him back home and of course Matt Damon alone on Mars; keeping spirit to a great soundtrack of 70's disco and adding an excellent array of comedy making the best of his situation.
Go see this film for its realistic achievements and excellent visionary directing, the resolution of the film will have your eyes glued the whole time.
Definitely recommend this tremendous achievement for film and space exploration.

Matt Damon plays an astronaut who is stranded on Mars and has to survive and find a way off the planet. He did a good job with the role being serious and funny at the same time. While at times he can be a bit goofy it does prevent the movie from being too depressing.

The way that he survives and finds ways to communicate was interesting to watch kind of like a science film but more exciting.

My main problem was that some of the science I found false or unbelievable. However that is few and far between. But overall I loved the movie and is one of the top movies of the year. Final score 9/10

The Martian is definitely a movie of the year contender for me, and could definitely be my #1 this year. Matt Damon nailed this performance and kept me at the edge of my seat for the entire film, even with the potential for some boring moments while he waited for rescue. The pacing was on point, but I do think that the pacing may be my only complaint, as the last half hour or so seemed to take a little longer than I personally desired, but still is just a small complaint as I truly enjoyed it all. Aside from the organic, martian potatoes that he planted, Watney was able to inhabit in Mars because he planted a seed in himself when he said, "I'm not gonna die here."
Like Ridley Scott's past pictures, the movie has a simple focus and meaning. It focuses on Watney's sense of hope in midst of uncertainty and reminded me that humans are capable of "flying around like Iron Man" as long as they believe that their tiniest of seeds will grow one day.

The writing is flawless, combining high intellect with lots of comedy. The only downfall is a few scenes that stretch reality and goofs such as unrealistic gravitation. Those are clearly not issues warranting complaint, but to give you an idea those are the strongest flaws in the film. The story is incredibly inspirational and every performance does the job. Overall it's an incredibly entertaining survival story, but the strongest aspect is surprisingly the large amount of comedy that will surely keep you smiling all the while rooting for the story. I agree with the underused characters played by Donald Glover, Jessica Chastain and Jeff Daniels. But, Matt Damon's portrayal of main character Mark Watney was well deserved of the Oscar Nomination, and makes up for the underused characters. Harry Gregson-Williams' score fit the film exactly, and his use of electronic themes and classical strings made the score even more remarkable. I believe that The Martian was a gripping survival story and deserved all of it's praise and awards. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Put simply, The Martian is like Red Planet (2000) except good. Really good. It's not every film that movies me to tears, but this was one.

I don't know if it's the best space movie, but it is certainly in the top 10. It's the kind of film that doesn't just melt your heart, but stirs the mind with the possibilities its events presents. Aside from that, it has what you'd expect from an expensive speculative fiction film. High-profile actors, great effects and vistas, historical nods.

What surprised me was the soundtrack- but really, what space film is complete without David Bowie?

As the film tees off, we are instantly given a first-person view of the dangers of Mars and the fight for survival each astronaut is living out each day on the planet's surface, that is until their emergency evacuation - but nope, even Damon couldn't do that right. Abandoned upon the desolate surface of Mars after being presumed dead by his crew, Damon must do all he can to endure the martian environment. One huge thing I admire about this film's plot, is that it doesn't care about the intellectual level of its audience, as the quote above states so well: it'll science the **** out of them. It's such a complex and well-executed premise that on paper seems nothing more than a impossible feat to pull off.

Technically this film is stunning, the cinematography, the CGI, the production design, all utterly gorgeous, and according to the Golden Globes, it's one of the best comedies of recent years too... yeah, sure. Admittedly the tongue-in-cheek humour does add a more fresh appeal to the film, making it a little more unique than previous sci-fi adventures, it piles on layers of thrills, emotional value and complex character development to create one of the finest science fiction films of recent years.

I get that China's state version of NASA would have scientists that wanted to help for pure science sake. I was not however convinced that the CCP would let them? Unless to own the Amercians which was never ever mentioned. Could of been a near perfect film without the confusing China motivation stuff.

That really shows in the movie, as believable problems continue to arise and the creativity of people works to come up with solutions to the situation of how to safely bring home a single man stranded on Mars with scant resources.

Easily one of the best Ridley Scott movies, this movie delivers a beautiful blend of wonderful Mars vistas and an excellent score, with lots of humour from the main character, Mark Watney, who is ideally played by Matt Damon with a stoic continuous sense of humour throughout the challenges as he breaks the wall and talks to the audience throughout in the for of video diary entries.

Gripping, lots of really excellent supporting cast with developed characters. I have found myself coming back to re-watch The Martian countless times in the years since its release. I think that's because the story is uplifting and positive, combined with an inspirational glimpse into the potential near future of Mankind as we step forward to becoming a multi-planetary species. If you love a good sci-fi movie, look no further than The Martian, it's in the top 5 of the last decade in my opinion, and crafted by a legendary director.

BAFTA finally limped in with an Academy Fellowship 2018 - well done Blighty - but come on guys? How about Best Director for The Martian? Or Blade Runner, or Thelma and Louise or Alien?? The man is one of the best - if not the best visual storytellers in the business. At least he's made money. The Martian is a superior science fiction tale about a lone astronaut (Matt Damon) unwittingly left behind by his loyal crew after a mission to Mars. While Moon and Gravity succeeded with effectively a single player (sorry George) The Martian adds another storyline which includes NASA and Damon's crew - now on a mission at an impossible distance from where Damon resides. The added storyline adds to his isolation and Damon is utterly endearing as a man who will stop at nothing to survive. Gripping, funny, beautiful to look at and ultimately extremely moving - The Martian is THE film of the year bar none. Expand

Although many of the screen adaptations unfortunately lose a good part of the beautiful and important details of the stories in the books, The Martian still manages to capture the essentials. The first scenes seemed to me to be exactly as I had imagined reading the book.
I really liked this movie, sci-fi is often my innocent pleasure, and the more realistic the story seems, the more I like it.

Overall the movie kept to the heart of Andy Weir's story, so bravo for that! We saw it in 3D, which was effective in a several key sequences, but the film is strong enough on its own that you don't need to see it in 3D if you're not into that. Being alive but wounded heIn “The Martian”, botanist astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is presumed dead after a sandstorm on Mars forces the mission to be cancelled and the crew must return to earth, without him or his body. Being alive but wounded he quickly takes care of himself and makes an inventory of what he has food wise and what he has to do to stay alive until the next space mission arrives on Mars four years in the future. Regarding the former he knows there is only a month’s supply but being a botanist he starts working on rationing and possibly growing food with what he has on hand.

Though director Ridley Scott has had success with sci-fi pictures such as “Alien”, and this is very much a picture in that genre, it is more a picture of a man’s will to survive in spite of all the odds against him. We follow Mark through a series of video diaries explaining how he grows potatoes using human waste, exploring ways to get in touch with his crew on the way back to earth or the people at NASA monitoring the mission along with fighting the elements. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay based on the book by Andy Weir, has a lot of technical talk to relay to the audience and, truthfully, though I didn’t understand 80-90% of what was being said and/or explained I was able to follow and be intrigued what was going on in the film.

With a strong supporting cast of Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and a memorable cameo by Donald Glover, strong direction by Scott and many outstanding jobs by the various production personal who will certainly win awards, “The Martian” belongs to Matt Damon.

Damon, as Watney, shows the man’s humor, determination to survive, resourcefulness, not to forget his drawing the audience in wondering if he will make it back to earth. He can depreciate himself while at the same time listing his accomplishments as the first person to do many things in space always keeping the viewers on his side and hoping he will succeed. It is this element of doubt that adds a surprising suspense to the story before the end.

One quibble is that at 2 hours and 20 minutes “The Martian” is about 20 minutes too long. Oh yes a warning---no, not a spoiler--hope you like disco music along with Abba and Gloria Gaynor!

By the way though I saw it in 3D it really isn’t a necessity to appreciating and enjoying this film.

This is my favorite movie of the year. Yeah, Mad Max was absolutely incredible, but the Marian is easily one of the most satisfying science fiction films I've seen this year, and i love science fiction.

This is the most grounded science fiction film I've seen. Everything felt so real, and the tension experienced by the main Character, excellently portrayed by Matt Damon, makes the situation feel ever so human as he find the determination to beat the odds and try his damnedest to survive. Also the film is just so dammed funny, its great to see a film not make this horrifying situation a sad angsty ride. The Martian is also the most motivational film i've seen in years. Do yourself a favorite and go see this amazing science fiction film and then read the book.

Certainly it is well made and not sleep-inducing, even though it is about science and not myth (Ridley Scott’s usual interest). It is a long two and a half hours, and although it never gets boring (especially if you like “reality” – ha ha) and even though the end from the start seems like a foregone conclusion – we will make this a happy ending dammit, regardless of the real hazards of space. You have oodles of time to admire all the incredibly unrealistic hero-geeks, and I didn’t believe it for a minute. Definitely it is not even half as good as Alien (a classic) or even Prometheus. But you really have to be a master filmmaker to keep people awake for 150 minutes when there is no real antagonist and you have to shut your mind off and just depend on raw skill and Matt Damon’s likeability to pull a film off. I bought the book a while ago, but I think I will recycle it. Once is enough. Expand

I am a bit of nerd of this kind of realistic science fiction movies and therefore I had high expectations of this movie. I regret to say I was a little bit disappointed.

The Mars landscape is beautifully rendered en very credible with dust clouds and all. This is the main attraction of the movie.

The main problem that there is nothing novel about this movie. There have been better movies for every aspect of the film:

Human aspect/psychology of being marooned in a strange place: Cast Away did it so much better; set in space: Matt Damon's role in Interstellar was more credible than his performance here. Space action scenes: Gravity had me on the edge of my seat Ground control scenes: Apollo 13 already set the standard

In summary, the movie is a beautiful, funny, but nothing new or breathless.

The non-space opera, non-action and non-emotional enduring version of Interstellar. But that stands out as an original, highly entertaining and beautifully directed sci-fi-adventure of science.

The year was 2013, and ’Gravity’ broke all expectations. Both the critics and the audience adored the space-drama. It opened an almost closed subgenre; the more realistic and scientifically accurate side of sci-fi. It smashed the box-office numbers and it’s going to be the movie that changed the space-genre. 2014 delivered an ambitious and mind-but also a heart breaking-sci-fi adventure of the relationship between a father and his daughter. Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ couldn’t match ‘Gravity’ and its box-office numbers, but it managed to bring big directors to the genre. 2015 is no exception and one of the most influential directors in the genre of space/horror is back; with ‘The Martian’ – the third installment in this realistic-science(-fiction) adventure that Gravity managed to put on the map.

‘The Martian’ stars Matt Damon as the leading role, and he subsidize with emotion and surprisingly much humor to the film. The direction by Ridley Scott is without any doubt excellent with the extraordinary cinematography and realistic views on Mars. The science-aspect is just as present and it keeps giving the movie realism in a not very distant future. We follow Mark Watney’s struggle to survive on the hostile red planet, and he’s very self-entertained, funny and extremely optimistic. Just his presence is exciting and the movie therefor never felt boring. He struggles with these almost impossible tasks, we see him develop through his ups and downs on his journey back to the blue planet. There’re much human traces like humor, attachment and morality, and it really is about one character, left alone by himself. So uniquely done!

It’s not a movie that’s action-packed nor high-paced; it’s a well preformed and well written art of work and that really is entertaining. It’s one aspect that might result in lost of interest by some individuals, but there are some incredibly great wow-and-high-paced moments where you really want to be there, and experience it by yourself! The 3D is better than the average movie, but doesn’t add anything extraordinary to the experience. But something that totally did is the soundtrack; so fitting and baffling to the specific character and moment! But the dialogs might drag the movie down a bit; they can feel forced to the audience from time to time when it comes to facts, etc.

The plot is not one-dimensional (but sometimes a bit predictable); it covers many characters at different locations (even planets). We have strong leading actors and well visualized characters. One minor concern is that it might have too many smaller roles, they absorb some of the excitement and focus of the movie. It loose some of the magic, especially in the third act. The main characters could also have had a greater attachment, there’s no strong chemistry between them. But these are just minor aspects that could have been even greater, and it really is good movie, even though the ending might be a bit too rushed and could have covered more of the climax.

’The Martian’ might not be flawless but it got a strong and funny lead from Matt Damon, and very rememberable moments that you should love to experience by yourself. It really is a realistic sci-fi flick full of humor, adventure, optimism and hope. It’s the 2015-Interstellar.

First off, I was highly excited to check this film out after reading the book and seeing that Ridley Scott was directing and Matt Damon was starring. And while it certainly met my expectations, it didn't quite exceed them like I had hoped. There was a major plot point or two in the book that was nowhere to be found in the film unfortunately. Also, the ending was slightly tweaked and added on to, but other than that, the rest of the film was entertaining, Damon gave a confident and often times humorous performance (staying true to the nature of his character in the book), and Scott's direction was superb and a great return to form after some of his previous mediocre films (e.g., The Counselor, Exodus.) Overall, I'd say it's definitely worth checking out, even if you haven't read the book. Heck, you might be better off not reading it so you aren't too disappointed by some of the things left out from it like I was. Expand

I thought it dragged a little bit too long. "Gravity" didn't have that problem, and to be honest, I found the latter to be more entertaining. I know some people say it's vastly overrated, but I frankly don't think that way. The visuals in that movie were a little better than this one, but "The Martian" is still pretty to look at. Matt Damon is amazing and shows a tremendous devotion to his character. What I like about the character is how he used humor to get him out of a sticky situation. It doesn't feel forced or anything. I wish I could say the same thing to the other characters though. Sometimes the movie would fall into movie conversations that last longer than they should have, and that attempt to make you invested. Science fiction is clearly not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it when the film deserves it. Other nitpicking element I'd like to bring up is the "not so subtle foreshadowing". There was this scene where the NASA president says Damon's character has chances of survival... this of course if something doesn't go horribly wrong, and in the very next scene, what happens? Surprise, surprise, the airlock decompresses and Mark gets himself blown up!

Nevertheless, it was a good movie and one of the better Ridley Scott's offers to date. It may be a little plodding when it comes to pacing, but the rest elements of this picture is sure to thrill.

Some of the plot devices, story line elements and science aspects don't work quite as well as they should, but these drawbacks are compensated for by its aforementioned strengths, as well as a capable performance by Matt Damon. In this film,Finally, a film about Mars that works! The previous few Mars + Science related films, such as Mission to Mars and Red Planet have been very average due to them coming up with antagonists/ villains that were not quite believable. In this film, the villain is the environment and the limitation of supplies and communications, potentially dull subjects, but the writer and the director have put it together well.

I love how the story invokes quite a bit of science content and present it is an easy to understand manner. The film also got many of the realism right. It has been reported that the storm that is central to the story could not occur on Mars. The film makers should have used a meteor strike instead to generate the 'storm' to eliminate the major unrealistic part of the film. Even so, this film is more realistic and has more story than Gravity. As a result, I think it is better than Gravity.

I do dislike one major part of the film, the part where they needed the Chinese Space Program for help. I would imagine that NASA would look to the Russian Space Program first rather than the less well developed Chinese Program. China only allows 34 foreign films into its market per year., so Hollywood bend over backwards to include a scene where only the Chinese could solve NASA's problem, hence giving the film a leg up into being allowed into the Chinese market. The reward could be hundreds of millions of dollars. The scene is awkward and could have been done better. It happened in Iron Man 3 too, where in the Chinese version, of which the particular scene is available on Youtube, only a Chinese surgeon is expert enough to remove the shrapnel from Stark's chest. It's stupid and it make the naive and self-important Chinese citizens accept the Chinese government propaganda that their country is so great at this moment.

Who would think the film is great? Most people of all ages, particularly those who like science.
Who would think the film is only so-so? Those who prefer a faster-paced film. The film is a bit slow.
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

The US PG-13 rating of the film should be due to a short scene involving trauma surgery. Blocking it from the children should enable them to enjoy the rest of the inspirational film.

Score: 4/5 (No half score). It' worth to pay to watch it in the cinemas.

This is a great movie and probably the first non-animated movie I have seen in 3D (though I had no choice) that I didn't leave feeling they added a bunch of random crap to make it 3D.

For anyone who hasn't read the book, I would say do that first. I thought the movie did an excellent job of creating a Mars environment, but it will cloud your imagination if you see the movie first.

The movie made some of the characters too goofy and the communication between them far fetched. However, because the movie is long as it is I understand why this was done. Not sure many will agree with me but I thought the movie did a pretty good job of pace for overcoming the hurdles Watney faces. In the book, it happens quickly and seems silly at how quickly he can overcome challenges.

Great cast, great acting, and definitely a must watch - but could easily miss this one in threatres and still get a great experience.

The plot of TheAfter the highly successful 'Space Odysseys' from Alfonso Cuarón and Christopher Nolan in the form of Gravity and Interstellar, Director Ridley Scott made an unimaginable yet convincing attempt in the form of 'The Martian'. The plot of The Martian got revealed from the poster itself, "Bring Him Home" where one can understand that the lead character got stuck on the Red Planet "Mars" and the intelligents in NASA tries to get him back. Lead Character "Mark Watney" played by Matt Damon is a treat to watch. Mark is a Astronaut who's indeed a Botanist and Chemist totally we can call Scientist. His hardships on the planet Mars makes the movie a horrific thriller with essence of his comedy timing. Mainly in 3D one can really feel the presence of Mars just at a distance of his eyesight. This credit goes to the Cinematography and VFX department who has really done a wonderful job. The Martian is a great attempt from Ridley Scott after Oscar winning Gladiator. The only confusing element in the movie is 'Time', where one can feel some logics are missing but the humorous part in the movie is Mark got survived on the Mars only by potatoes. Apart from Interstellar and Gravity, Martian gives us a fresh feel, who knows in the near future it may be our home. Expand

His charisma and funny lines help us engage with his fight, besides the well written script, which develops naturally and with a good rhythm. At the same time we enjoy his time in Mars, following NADA attempts to help him is also captivating and supporting characters have a great chemistry on screen. You can slap Ridley Scott's name on anything and everyone (including me) will go see it. It's so awesome that you still can go to the cinema today and see a new film directed by the guy who brought us Alien, now that's freaking awesome. But Ridley can be a hit or miss with the movies that he's releasing recently such as: Robin Hood, The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but Prometheus (In my opinion) was pretty good and I know a lot of people may not like that movie and that's okay if you didn't like it, but I did. When I first heard about The Martian being directed by Ridley Scott, I was exciting but nervous at the same time, because as I said before about Ridley being a mix bag recently. But I kept a positive and open mind, I mean this might be the film that Ridley Scott finally went back to he's roots from the good old days.

After seeing The Martian on my first viewing I liked it, but I wasn't amazed by it. It's not until the movie actually started to grow on me as I thought about it more and more, and now after thinking about it for awhile now, I can safely say that The Martian is a great movie. Ridley Scott's back everyone.

Matt Damon plays Mark Watney brilliantly in this movie and this might actually be the best performance I've seen from Damon. He's hilarious, always positive and never gives up even when a lot of things don't go quite as planned, he always finds away. I also love how Damon's character can crack a joke there and then even when he's in this horrible situation; and to me it made he's character more relatable and likable. This is Matt Damon finest work as he was terrific in this movie.

Ridley Scott's directing in this movie was absolutely magnificent and this has to be one of he's best films in years. The movie isn't all hilarious as there were some real suspenseful scenes in this movie, but what I thought was so brilliantly well done is that Ridley Scott mixed the humor and the suspense perfectly together. Nicely done Ridley.

The rest of cast: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ekiofor were all freaking great in this movie. Everyone in this movie was great.

The writing has to be the biggest strength in this whole movie, because it was clever, funny, never lost me attention and it had a fantastic sense of humor to itself. It matched the tone of the movie perfectly as I felt that The Martian needed this type of tone.

Now for the problems: My only flaw in this movie is this 25 minute sequence where it cuts back to earth with the NASA crew talking about different ways of bringing Mark back, but the stuff on Mars was more interesting. I'm not saying it was bad as the earth stuff scene was handled well and it was very well acted, but I was more interested on the stuff that was happening on Mars with Damon's character.

Overall The Martian is absolutely worth checking out. This is Ridley Scott's and Matt Damon's best work in years. It's beautifully shot, well acted and a entertaining movie.

With Matt Damon in the lead role as Mark Watney, Damon pushes his boundaries as an actor, before he was pretty much the supporting character, but now, he proves that he can carry the movie.

To sum up; this movie is pretty much like a "Robinson Crusoe" or a 'Cast Away' (2000) in space. Watney, along with other astronauts (Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Kate Mara and Sebastian Stan) travel to Mars and he is left for dead when the others do not know what happened to him.

Obviously, if you've seen the trailer, then you'll know that he is not really dead, we see him stranded in Mars fighting for survival. We see him growing potatoes, making water and trying to contact his crew members and with the rest of the crew on Earth.

This is a beautifully filmed picture, with some ambitious establishing shots proving how big-scale this movie is. Sometimes you cannot tell whether you are looking at green-screen, or if it might actually be filmed in space/Mars. We see Damon's character trying to cope, physically and emotionally just living in an entire planet all by himself with limited-to-none human contact. The movie also does a good job at teaching how to survive on a planet like Mars, obviously, it is harder than it looks, but you get the idea.

There is a lot of surprising comic relief in this movie, mostly from Michael Pena's character, who did the same thing when he was in 'Ant-Man' (2015). I was surprised as to how little screen time Jessica Chastain had throughout this movie, but this is Matt Damon's movie, and spending just over two hours with him is good enough.

I will admit, there were times where I grew a little restless throughout the first two acts of this movie, there are many long stretches and the way it jumps back-and-forth through Matt Damon in space, to the people back at Earth can feel a little choppy.

But by the time we reach the third act of the movie, that's when the movie starts to get really interesting and that's where the tension rises. Director Ridley Scott is good at building up tension and the music by Harry Gregson-Williams complements the really intense moments throughout the movie.

Drew Goddard, who also wrote the movie's screenplay (based off the book by Andy Weir), does a magnificent job at crafting clean dialogue without making some of the jokes feel too forced and out of place at times.

Overall, 'The Martian' is a great movie, proving how great Ridley Scott is as a director and how much of an amazing actor Matt Damon is, he could be seriously considered for an Oscar nomination for his performance. If you are a patient viewer, who didn't mind sitting through films like; 'Cast Away' (2000), '127 Hours' (2010) and 'Life of Pi' (2012), then this will be an unforgettable experience. It's a movie that may not be that entertaining, but it mostly benefits from great acting, and amazing special effects. You will not want to take your eyes off this movie.

The movie is fantastic but it felt so extremely rushed to fit everything into the 2 hour time slot. The characters had the potential to be so much deeper (as they are in the book) and the limited time to tell this story left even the main protagonist, Mark Watney, with what seemed like an untold story. Nobody does it anymore but this would have been perfect for a 3 or 4 part miniseries on TV as the flushing out of the characters and their struggles could have been so much more profound. That said the movie stuck very close to the book for the most part and I love the use of real science behind everything. Overall a good movie but left me wanting so much more, I wouldn't have cared if they extended it an hour and made it an epic long movie it would be worth it. Expand

Since Interstellar was further and deeper in emotions, future and science as compared to The Martian which only deals with near future and every scientist's science. Gravity on the other hand had much similar substance "Survival of a single protagonist", but differed in aspects of visuals and the fact that we get to see only one character in space, where The Martian has a lot of dramatized characters on screen.
