I thought it dragged a little bit too long. "Gravity" didn't have that problem, and to be honest, I found the latter to be more entertaining. I know some people say it's vastly overrated, but I frankly don't think that way. The visuals in that movie were a little better than this one, but "The Martian" is still pretty to look at. Matt Damon is amazing and shows a tremendous devotion to his character. What I like about the character is how he used humor to get him out of a sticky situation. It doesn't feel forced or anything. I wish I could say the same thing to the other characters though. Sometimes the movie would fall into movie conversations that last longer than they should have, and that attempt to make you invested. Science fiction is clearly not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it when the film deserves it. Other nitpicking element I'd like to bring up is the "not so subtle foreshadowing". There was this scene where the NASA president says Damon's character has chances of survival... this of course if something doesn't go horribly wrong, and in the very next scene, what happens? Surprise, surprise, the airlock decompresses and Mark gets himself blown up!

Nevertheless, it was a good movie and one of the better Ridley Scott's offers to date. It may be a little plodding when it comes to pacing, but the rest elements of this picture is sure to thrill.

Final Score: 8/10

This is one of the best sci-fi movies in recent history and Ridley Scott does a phenomenal job of helming such an amazing story. The cast does an excellent job, and never do you feel like the story is dragging. Expand

Starring a strong ensemble cast of excellent actors who all deliver in their roles, and directed by sci-fi veteran Ridley Scott, the film is technically proficient in all aspects of its production, with high quality visual effects and production design. About the worst that can be said about it is that it feels a little lacking in character background and development; we meet the characters and see what happens to them, but we never really get to know them very well.

All in all, it is a well made, entertaining, and surprisingly family friendly sci-fi film that is well worth a watch.

nb. I saw it in 3D and didn't feel like it added anything to the film.

He determines to stay alive by using science, ingenuity and pluck, while NASA strategizes on rescue plans. Unlike "Gravity" (which it will be inevitably compared to) this is more about science than suspense. Solutions are methodically discussed and tried with few setbacks. Despite this more intellectual approach, Damon's performance is spirited, amusing and occasionally touching. Director Ridley Scott manages to make the moving parts and technical explanations acceptable, while mining a bit of emotion and even humor in the interactions. Overall, it's a well-crafted and captivating tale of human survival. Expand

Mix in stellar performances, a surprising sense of humor, likable characters, a compelling predicament, and a heck of a lot of intelligence and what do you get? A darn fine movie. The Martian works on just about every level.

It's a movie you can stay completely invested in. It's human and just all around fantastic. Minor shortcomings come in the form of some slower moments, but even in these moments the stellar writing takes control and makes it all worthwhile. Even watching Damon actually doing the work necessary to completing his tasks is something I was interested in watching.

It's just an all around excellent movie. One where all of the pieces come together into an intensely likable whole. It's a movie I highly recommend even to the point where I would say it's a must watch. Truly deserving of all the praise it has received.

Yes Murphy’s Law gets worked to death here (I stopped counting at SNAFU # 36) AND the script really does suffer from a serious gas shortage somewhere near the half-way point…..but Matt makes a lot of the film “work”. I mean HE’S MATT DAMON for God‘s sake ! Of course the world is on tenterhooks until he’s been safely returned to Earth !

Matt Damone, the left behind astronaut recovers from momentarily fainting and announces he is alive, and tries to use all his science to produce water, irrigate, and move to a point where he can be rescued using an old spacecraft. After lot of debates in NASA they decide to bring him back with the help of the Chinese. The teem mate crew who left him for dead goes back while midway to rescue him in a time lengthy trip from Mars to the Earth. A scientific movie that cannot be understood in all its details but that mainly reveals that technology matters and that humans have to keep going trying and thinking. Matt Damone the left behind astronaut is the main actor without in depth acting. Other roles are complementary and coldly performed within a scenario mainly focused on technology without light on someone in particular. It is a worth seeing game of mind and space graphics, though somehow boringly lengthy. Expand

The man has not made a good film since Kingdom of Heaven in 2005, so no way this one will turn out well, right? Wrong and thank God for that. One of the funniest, exciting, and most well crafted, films of the year, The Martian will stand tall amongst the heavy hitters of 2015. Matt Damon is fantastic, as is the entire ensemble cast, namely Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott who's return to science fiction is most certainly a welcome one, as he manages to perfectly manage the blending of Mark Watney's colorful personality with the hard science, without getting bogged down in the details. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the breathtaking cinematography. The shots taking place on Mars and in the ship are perfection, as are the visual effects, which are truly stunning. One of the best science fiction films of the century, The Martian is an enjoyable, masterfully made, and visually spectacular, film that deserves its praise and will hopefully net some additional recognition for its star, who turns in one of the best performances of his career. It's an evolutionary improvement over earlier Mars films like Mission to Mars and Red Planet, which lacked this movie's compelling characters and strong script. However, there are several surprising letdowns, particularly coming from a great director like Ridley Scott. There are a few too many comedic moments that rob the dramatic weight from key scenes, particularly at the climax. Watney's joking tone plays well when it's cast as a coping mechanism for the vast problems that he faces, but it takes us out of the moment when he's cracking jokes while others are risking their lives to try and save him. And towards the end Mission Control starts to feel like a gag reel, with them as the butt of every joke. A little more dramatic tension and a little less slapstick would have made this movie great. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Martian is a crowd-pleaser of a movie. Less visually spectacular than its obvious comparator, last year's Gravity, but more intriguingly plotted and engagingly acted. The plot is speculative fiction; none of it seems terribly far from the truth, though I'm sure it can be scientifically dissected. Astronaut on Mars mission gets left behind, people try to save him as he struggles to survive in basically a tent. Self-talk, MacGyvering, and adventure ensue.

There are a few missteps, notably that the Earthbound HQ lies to the astronauts for months to conceal that their comrade survived, which strains credulity and is glossed over. As far as acting, Matt Damon makes for a charismatic everyman hero, and some of the supporting cast are strong, notably Donald Glover and Benedict Wong in fun and surprisingly credible mad scientist roles and Mackenzie Davis as an insightful desk jockey. Jessica Chastain, however, was decidedly overpaid for her bit part (despite claims to the contrary), and the spaceship crew in general are not as strong as the ground crew. Sean Bean is in this movie in another missable bit part and (surprise!) does not die at the end.

This being said, the film manages to cram a complex and technical story into a very watchable and understated couple of hours. There's no reason to see it in 3D, but it's definitely worth seeing at a nice theater.

In this film,Finally, a film about Mars that works! The previous few Mars + Science related films, such as Mission to Mars and Red Planet have been very average due to them coming up with antagonists/ villains that were not quite believable. In this film, the villain is the environment and the limitation of supplies and communications, potentially dull subjects, but the writer and the director have put it together well.

I love how the story invokes quite a bit of science content and present it is an easy to understand manner. The film also got many of the realism right. It has been reported that the storm that is central to the story could not occur on Mars. The film makers should have used a meteor strike instead to generate the 'storm' to eliminate the major unrealistic part of the film. Even so, this film is more realistic and has more story than Gravity. As a result, I think it is better than Gravity.

I do dislike one major part of the film, the part where they needed the Chinese Space Program for help. I would imagine that NASA would look to the Russian Space Program first rather than the less well developed Chinese Program. China only allows 34 foreign films into its market per year., so Hollywood bend over backwards to include a scene where only the Chinese could solve NASA's problem, hence giving the film a leg up into being allowed into the Chinese market. The reward could be hundreds of millions of dollars. The scene is awkward and could have been done better. It happened in Iron Man 3 too, where in the Chinese version, of which the particular scene is available on Youtube, only a Chinese surgeon is expert enough to remove the shrapnel from Stark's chest. It's stupid and it make the naive and self-important Chinese citizens accept the Chinese government propaganda that their country is so great at this moment.

Who would think the film is great? Most people of all ages, particularly those who like science.
Who would think the film is only so-so? Those who prefer a faster-paced film. The film is a bit slow.
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

The US PG-13 rating of the film should be due to a short scene involving trauma surgery. Blocking it from the children should enable them to enjoy the rest of the inspirational film.

Score: 4/5 (No half score). It' worth to pay to watch it in the cinemas.

It is Ridley Scotts best film in a while. The legendary directors recent films have been mostly forgettable, but The Martian is an easy addition to his list of classics. The film is so well directed and the visuals are outstanding all of the scenes on Mars are very neat to see especially in 3D. I was completely sold by the look and I don’t think it could’ve been any more real. Matt Damon also gets some redemption in this film after a couple years of performing in average films like the Monuments Men and Elysium. Damon offers his best performance in at least the last 5 years in this movie. His character is certainly a smart one but there is a normal person in there and when you watch him you can almost see yourself in his shoes. His role is also just altogether fun, this is a good movie but it is also a fun movie which does not always happen.

The whole cast really shines here and the whole supporting cast is rounded out with big names. Chiwetel Ejiofor is great in this movie. Its nice to see him in a good role as he has been quiet after his strong role in 12 Years a Slave. Jeff Daniels and Jessica Chastain are great as well and I know there was some worried about similarities to last years blockbuster Interstellar and I’m happy to say that this film really has its own identity despite having some of the same actors involved. I think I still enjoy Interstellar more but this is certainly a film worth watching.

What I liked about the film was that, unlike the book, it had more
gravitas. You felt the seriousness of Mark Watney's situation. It had
more emotion and more human character. The film also had less swearing
and crude humour, and I never thought that I would ever be saying that
about a book.

But the film also inherited some of the books flaws. My biggest dislike
is that it lacked a sense of time. You didn't feel just how very long
he'd spent on Mars, you were just told that. And I think too much time
was spent back on Earth and it really took away from the sense of
isolation that should have been there.

My final big flaw is the uneveness of the film. I didn't like the
beginning of the film as it felt rushed and they were just cramming
everything in. The ending however I loved. It was exciting, nerve
racking and everything you'd want out of a movie like this.

Matt Damon did a great job in correctly portraying everything that was
likable about Mark Watney. And it's just nice to see a smart person
that isn't another House-esque smug, arrogant Genius. The rest of the
actors did a good job as well.

Overall I think I liked this movie better than the book. It's very
recommendable.

The plot of TheAfter the highly successful 'Space Odysseys' from Alfonso Cuarón and Christopher Nolan in the form of Gravity and Interstellar, Director Ridley Scott made an unimaginable yet convincing attempt in the form of 'The Martian'. The plot of The Martian got revealed from the poster itself, "Bring Him Home" where one can understand that the lead character got stuck on the Red Planet "Mars" and the intelligents in NASA tries to get him back. Lead Character "Mark Watney" played by Matt Damon is a treat to watch. Mark is a Astronaut who's indeed a Botanist and Chemist totally we can call Scientist. His hardships on the planet Mars makes the movie a horrific thriller with essence of his comedy timing. Mainly in 3D one can really feel the presence of Mars just at a distance of his eyesight. This credit goes to the Cinematography and VFX department who has really done a wonderful job. The Martian is a great attempt from Ridley Scott after Oscar winning Gladiator. The only confusing element in the movie is 'Time', where one can feel some logics are missing but the humorous part in the movie is Mark got survived on the Mars only by potatoes. Apart from Interstellar and Gravity, Martian gives us a fresh feel, who knows in the near future it may be our home. Expand

You can slap Ridley Scott's name on anything and everyone (including me) will go see it. It's so awesome that you still can go to the cinema today and see a new film directed by the guy who brought us Alien, now that's freaking awesome. But Ridley can be a hit or miss with the movies that he's releasing recently such as: Robin Hood, The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but Prometheus (In my opinion) was pretty good and I know a lot of people may not like that movie and that's okay if you didn't like it, but I did. When I first heard about The Martian being directed by Ridley Scott, I was exciting but nervous at the same time, because as I said before about Ridley being a mix bag recently. But I kept a positive and open mind, I mean this might be the film that Ridley Scott finally went back to he's roots from the good old days.

After seeing The Martian on my first viewing I liked it, but I wasn't amazed by it. It's not until the movie actually started to grow on me as I thought about it more and more, and now after thinking about it for awhile now, I can safely say that The Martian is a great movie. Ridley Scott's back everyone.

Matt Damon plays Mark Watney brilliantly in this movie and this might actually be the best performance I've seen from Damon. He's hilarious, always positive and never gives up even when a lot of things don't go quite as planned, he always finds away. I also love how Damon's character can crack a joke there and then even when he's in this horrible situation; and to me it made he's character more relatable and likable. This is Matt Damon finest work as he was terrific in this movie.

Ridley Scott's directing in this movie was absolutely magnificent and this has to be one of he's best films in years. The movie isn't all hilarious as there were some real suspenseful scenes in this movie, but what I thought was so brilliantly well done is that Ridley Scott mixed the humor and the suspense perfectly together. Nicely done Ridley.

The rest of cast: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ekiofor were all freaking great in this movie. Everyone in this movie was great.

The writing has to be the biggest strength in this whole movie, because it was clever, funny, never lost me attention and it had a fantastic sense of humor to itself. It matched the tone of the movie perfectly as I felt that The Martian needed this type of tone.

Now for the problems: My only flaw in this movie is this 25 minute sequence where it cuts back to earth with the NASA crew talking about different ways of bringing Mark back, but the stuff on Mars was more interesting. I'm not saying it was bad as the earth stuff scene was handled well and it was very well acted, but I was more interested on the stuff that was happening on Mars with Damon's character.

Overall The Martian is absolutely worth checking out. This is Ridley Scott's and Matt Damon's best work in years. It's beautifully shot, well acted and a entertaining movie.

Yes, the Alien director has been fairly inconsistent of late but put together a great film in the Martian. Obviously we can't give Scott all the credit because the performances were top notch. Matt Damon was both hilarious and electric in his role as Mark Watney. Also Chiwetel Ejiofor was so good in this movie, and i can definitely see him getting a supporting actor nod for his role. Now lets attend back to my hard on for Mr.Scott. One thing you can always expect when walking into a Ridley Scott film is that it will be visually stunning, and this film is GORGOUS. Mars is a character of its own in this film like Mount Everest is to "Everest". The planet looks like the coolest sandbox you'll ever visit and probably had people checking Expedia for one way trips. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that i they try and tie in his parents at one point late in the film and i just wish there was more to that. His parents seem to be the only family he has on earth and i believe that if they were able to just touch on their relationship just a bit more then that would add a scoop of give a **** for the viewers. Overall the film is great and that con is really just nit picking at what was a well acted, directed, written and shot film. Expand

The film is about some astronauts who after a storm blast off the planet Mars but they leave behind Mark Watney as he is presumed dead.He turns out to have survived the storm and with only a few supplies and food for counted days,he must use science and grow food in a place where nothing grows in order to survive until the next rescue mission comes for him.
I seriously loved this movie, the performances are all very great, especially Matt Damon who gives the performance of a lifetime. He seems very much committed to the role and he is full of emotion that equals to a great and Oscar-worthy performance.
Ridley Scott does an incredible job here with the way that he decides to take on the story and also the ending is just brilliant and very well directed.
The score by Harry Gregson-Williams is also very haunting and memorable but what stands out the most here is the incredibly amazing cinematography by Dariusz Wolski.
The Mars scenes look great and they just feel real, them mixed with the very good visual effects just make for the perfect once in a lifetime experience.
I really enjoyed The Martian and it's certainly one of the best movies of 2015.Ridley Scott is back with a bang.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Space fans are being spoiled nowadays, what with Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014) and now The Martian (2015) coming to the cinema. I liked Gravity because it felt close to reality, while Interstellar was more of a sci-fi movie with in my opinion too much emotional drivel. So how is The Martian then?

Visually this movie can be compared with the movie Gravity. The views on the planet Mars are spectacular and almost everything that happens feels realistic, except for the ending of the movie. The disco music, ABBA, David Bowie... is a nice touch because it clashes so much with the setting on an alien planet far away in space.

The main thing this movie is missing though, is some psychological tension. After a big sandstorm astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars by his crew, yet all he does (after taking care of his belly wound by operating on himself) is immediately putting his thinking cap on and finding these smart solutions. There is no panic or fear whatsoever to be detected in him. he just feels confident as ever and starts the first potatoe farm on Mars.

This makes the viewer less involved emotionally and there's never any doubt that Watney will make it in the end. The constant switching from the planet Mars to earth, where the people of NASA are working on a solution to get Mark Watney back, takes away any feeling of abandonment or solitude of a man being left alone on another planet.

The Martian has a positive vibe and it's nice to have some comic relief in the story. As soon as I saw Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Life and Jeff Daniels from Dumb and Dumber, I was waiting for them to start making comical faces and talking with a silly voice. But luckily it didn't get that far!

Matt Damon as Mark Watney is his usual dullness. I could never appreciate him much as an actor, it seems he can only do the typical american action hero boy and he has only one facial expression. Just as in Saving Private Ryan (1998) he has no emotional reach: "Oh my brothers died? That sucks... well, back to business I guess. Let's kill some german soldiers!"

The Martian is not a bad movie by any means and can be enjoyed as a light hearted family movie. I rate it 7 out of 10.

The movie is fantastic but it felt so extremely rushed to fit everything into the 2 hour time slot. The characters had the potential to be so much deeper (as they are in the book) and the limited time to tell this story left even the main protagonist, Mark Watney, with what seemed like an untold story. Nobody does it anymore but this would have been perfect for a 3 or 4 part miniseries on TV as the flushing out of the characters and their struggles could have been so much more profound. That said the movie stuck very close to the book for the most part and I love the use of real science behind everything. Overall a good movie but left me wanting so much more, I wouldn't have cared if they extended it an hour and made it an epic long movie it would be worth it. Expand

The Martian is an inspiring, interesting and really enjoyable movie.

Ridley Scott knocked it out of the park with this movie, the cinematography is phenomenal, Matt Damon gives one of his best performances to date, I was skeptical going into this movie as I thought "how could this movie be any good if I'm watching one guy on his own, talking to no one but himself (like tarzan) be any good?" I was wrong, it wasn't like Tarzan, yes I know it's a terrible pun/joke.

Mark Watney is a **** idol in this movie, when people say "he makes the best out of a bad situation" they're not joshing you he is truly inspiring and I'd rather more characters like him in movies rather than the ones that always get depressed about midway through because of something happening or something they've done, and have this over indulgent crying scene, I don't care about that **** I'd rather a movie that is fun, instead of ones that have a **** ton of crying in them.

This movie is impeccable, it's not perfect by all means, I got a little annoyed by the fact it had to cut forward at the end, (you'll understand if you've seen it) but I see why they did it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie, a great break from those depressed characters we get in every single movie about surviving.. This movie made me want to get the book, in fact, next time i go into a store, I'm going to go into the book shop and buy this book. I loved the movie, sure it has a few problems but I have enjoyed this far more than any other movie I had seen since the Imitation Game.

In my opinion this movie should get a nomination for best picture and I honest to god believe at this moment in time, it should get it.

BTW, wouldn't it be nice if Metacritic did what so many other rating/polling services do? They toss out the highest and lowest scores before calculating an average. What I wished however, was that "The Martian" was more about surviving on Mars and less about "MUST-RESCUE-MATT-DAMON". The rescue mission is a theme used far too many times, and this movie would have been at least a 9 if it took time to tell the story, slowed down the pace, and used the amazing potential it has, that a scientist has to figure out how to survive on Mars. I mean, it only took 54 days before he had contact with earth. Wasted opportunities. Assuming that criteria is fulfilled, what would have made the movie a solid 10, would be to cut out all the political NASA/USA/China bull crap, that is just so unnecessary and leaves you wondering why this is relevant, when you could be watching Matt Damon trying to solve his survival situation.

Despite the many failed opportunities to make this a regular masterpiece, it is a well-crafted movie, that doesn't show off, as you could feel its relative "Interstellar" doing. Where "Interstellar" was all about bragging about all the cool space-effects, "The Martian" is more about telling the story of the science behind putting men on Mars. I still wished they would have emphasized on that, and cut out most of the sub-plots, that really blurs the plot.

What a comeback for Ridley Scott.
Lets first off discuss this director is a risk taker and is either a hit or miss but has always been a visionary.
Adapted from the novel by the same title by Andy Weir, The Martian tells a not so distant story of space exploration on Mars.
Classic man vs. nature structure but told so eloquently.
Matt Damon shines a botanist left alone on Mars for approximately 500 SOLS (Mars days) and you get fluid scenes between the crew that left him, NASA back at Earth trying to bring him back home and of course Matt Damon alone on Mars; keeping spirit to a great soundtrack of 70's disco and adding an excellent array of comedy making the best of his situation.
Go see this film for its realistic achievements and excellent visionary directing, the resolution of the film will have your eyes glued the whole time.
Definitely recommend this tremendous achievement for film and space exploration.

The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Drew Goddard. It stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kirsten Wiig and a slew of other equally talented actors.

The Martian is about manned mission to Mars in which Astronaut Mark Watney(Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Ridley Scott did it again offering one of the best science fiction movies of this century. After Blade Runner, my personal Favorite of his, and a slew of if-fie movies I wasn't sure how he would ever meet his standard. Well He did!

Scott offers some of the best direction I have ever seen in a science fiction movie. With intense camera-work Scott unleashes the sheer despair of being four years away from one's family, friends, and and most of all planet, while keeping glimmers of hope through out. This works hand in hand with the awesome cinematography done beautifully by Dariusz Wolski. A true beauty technically it holds up just as well in script and acting. My personal favorite scene in the movie was second to last scene in the movie. I was terrified but enthralled.

The script from this movie was brilliant. Excellent Work From Goddard made the movie gripping as well as intellectual. With actual scientific ideas to boot this movie is very hard to pull apart. It holds not only great science fiction but comedy so funny I found myself crying at the hilarity of the moment. With inside joke galore, this was a great script.

Finally the acting. Matt Damon was magnificent in the role of Mark Watney, demonstrating is comic chops and his dramatic finesse. He was optimistic, funny and smart, three characteristics it takes to pull of a role like this.I enjoyed Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Wiig, Kate Mara, and Micheal Pena. I loved Jeff Daniels' somber but caring portrayal of his character. One of my favorite characters was that of Rich Pummel, played by Donald Glover. He was magnetic in the part for such a small role. My favorite character in the movie was Vincent Kapoor played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He was highly intelligent, witty, charming and resourceful.

With a tight script, direction, cinematography, acting and no glaring issues, I am forced to do this. The Martian Gets an A+. The Martian is truly out of this world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Matthew Paige Damon (I hate abbreviate like "Matt" seems GAY, **** When we'll no longer freshness and call the correct name?), managed to overcome in this film.
Fox don't make more good films like "Titanic" and "Fight Club" and so on, Warner in the command.
This film won't compete to oscar, (except for special effects, which are few) but shows a different perspective as it was with Gravity and Interstellar covering other aspects, the limit of human beings in certain situations. I do not see how fantasy film as others clowns have said.
Fantasy to my way of seeing is "Tomorrowland" and all alienation from Disney! (no forget "Twilight zone", this bull****, I think so some day will forget this **** to
fifth category from hell) Alias the only fantasy is that man never walked on the moon !!! It is the purest reality !! Tactic of war, hollywood's show in the cold war.
Man on the moon?
NEVER! Don't forget! NEVER! Just a freak show in the labs from HOlly Youdy.
A true history hurt some like you, but the better off all is knowledge of reality.

The Martian is a great realistic science-fiction movie of a man trapped on Mars. The science works well and it's all glued together by Matt Damon's energetic central performance... And Sean Bean actually survives!!

Mourning the loss of their colleague, the crew begin their journey back to Earth not realising he is still alive and now trapped alone on the red planet. Although Matt Damon shares more screen time than Tom Hanks did, The Martian is very much Castaway in space with much of the movies focus on Watney’s attempts to survive against all the odds. As one would expect Damon does a great job in the lead role, managing to infuse his character with enough charm (and humour) to make the audience care about his plight. In fact, despite the grand scenery this is very much a character based movie and in that regard it largely succeeds even if it’s never quite going to be considered as an all time classic. Expand

It is also the best Mars based film ever made. Emotional, heartfelt and most of all, a love letter to science and human ingenuity, it is also a great space thriller. As if apologizing for Prometheus, which contains scientists doing some really dumb things, the astronauts in The Martian are cool folks, solving problems left and right. At its heart though is Matt Damon's incredible performance, an Oscar worthy one where you believe that despite incredible odds, his optimistic astronaut will survive. As per usual, The Martian is a gorgeous film, and along with Gravity and Interstellar, somehow made them an 'unofficial' trilogy of absolutely great hard sci-fi films that need to be seen on the Big Screen. Is it one of the best film of 2015? For sure. Expand

Matt Damon does the perfect job as a fantastic main character to follow the film through, with whom you share his pain, anguish and eventual joy. What's refreshing about the film is how positive it is, and how it has a good amount of comedy in the script. That, along with immense cinematography and a perfectly atmospheric score, puts it above a lot of other sci-fi films, such as Gravity.

89/100.

The visuals: phenomenal. You could really feel you were in Mars. Absolutely beautiful and fascinating. The film itself is kind of a mix of things we have already seen, but like I said the difference is the approach. It also spreads a positive message of how we humans could work together to become better. Matt Damon is great in the role and all the extensive supporting cast full of respectable names if good too. It´s not the masterpiece of the year but it is one more great occasion to celebrate oscars finally included several blockbusters among their nominees for the big categories, and for a good reason this time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely masterpiece, this is second Interstellar. Fusion of sci-fi and drama movies - fusion of movies like Interstellar, Moon 2112, Gravity and Mission to Mars. Breathtaking.
However, I want to explain why I didn't put 10 mark here.
First, at the end the plot was quite predictable - it was obvious that Mark will survive. After they lost a rocket it was quite clear it could not be for nothing, also no one from his team wont die either - would be very stupid to trade one for another.
Second, thing I disliked most about this movie - after 2 years of isolation he meets with his colleagues like he left them a week ago. He spend 700 days in isolation, this could not pass unnoticed for his mind. Remember Mission to Mars - how the guy left on the planet reacted after he saw his fellows? Interstellar had the same problem, btw.
But still this movie is awesome and worth watching.

I am a bit of nerd of this kind of realistic science fiction movies and therefore I had high expectations of this movie. I regret to say I was a little bit disappointed.

The Mars landscape is beautifully rendered en very credible with dust clouds and all. This is the main attraction of the movie.

The main problem that there is nothing novel about this movie. There have been better movies for every aspect of the film:

Human aspect/psychology of being marooned in a strange place: Cast Away did it so much better; set in space: Matt Damon's role in Interstellar was more credible than his performance here. Space action scenes: Gravity had me on the edge of my seat Ground control scenes: Apollo 13 already set the standard

In summary, the movie is a beautiful, funny, but nothing new or breathless.

He just really draws you in from start to finish. The cinematography is lovely as well. Everything just feels so elegant and engaging. I couldn't ask for more this year! Highly recommended Expand

This is a great movie and probably the first non-animated movie I have seen in 3D (though I had no choice) that I didn't leave feeling they added a bunch of random crap to make it 3D.

For anyone who hasn't read the book, I would say do that first. I thought the movie did an excellent job of creating a Mars environment, but it will cloud your imagination if you see the movie first.

The movie made some of the characters too goofy and the communication between them far fetched. However, because the movie is long as it is I understand why this was done. Not sure many will agree with me but I thought the movie did a pretty good job of pace for overcoming the hurdles Watney faces. In the book, it happens quickly and seems silly at how quickly he can overcome challenges.

Great cast, great acting, and definitely a must watch - but could easily miss this one in threatres and still get a great experience.

Many scientific principles need to be distorted in order for the movie to progress - I thought that Matt Damon did a fairly good job, and he's the only reason the movie even deserves a passing grade. Loved the fact that he was able to make a potato farm and survive as long as he did because of his background (conveniently) in botany. Loved how he communicated figured how to communicate with NASA, but that's about it.
NASA is headed by a bunch of idiots, China all of a sudden becomes a massive charity. Donald Glover is a physics nerd who introduces the "slingshot" maneuver, which apparently is a revolutionary concept (not).
All in all - was an OK movie, had good and bad bits.

It is 9/10 because it was 15 mins longer than it was supposed to be. The finale requires a new cut to leave out all the bombing and ironman nonsense. Those did not add to the suspense or the fun factor, rather removed from it.
