The story
The Lion King is a timeless classic that has captivated audiences since its release in 1994. With stunning animation, a beautiful soundtrack, and unforgettable characters, this film has earned its place in cinematic history.

The story follows Simba, a young lion who must come to terms with his destiny as the rightful king of the Pride Lands. Along the way, he learns important lessons about responsibility, friendship, and family. The characters in The Lion King are all memorable, from the wise and benevolent Mufasa to the conniving and power-hungry Scar. Even the comic relief characters, Timon and Pumbaa, provide heartwarming moments that complement the film's more serious themes.

One of the film's greatest strengths is its soundtrack, composed by the legendary duo of Elton John and Tim Rice. The songs are catchy and uplifting, adding an extra layer of emotional depth to the story. "Circle of Life", "Hakuna Matata", and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are all instant classics that have become synonymous with the film itself.

The animation in The Lion King is also top-notch, featuring stunning landscapes and lifelike animal movements. The attention to detail is evident in every frame, making the film a joy to watch even after multiple viewings.

Overall, The Lion King is a masterpiece that continues to inspire and entertain audiences of all ages. Its timeless story, beautiful animation, and memorable soundtrack make it a must-watch for any movie lover. A 10/10 rating is well-deserved for this cinematic gem.

It was one of the first movies I ever saw, so that accounts for how much I love it. The animation is superb, the backgrounds look so rich, and for once, there are no stiff movements. The highlights were the stampede and the fight between Scar and Simba. The music by Hans Zimmer is outstanding, a perfect mix of African chants and pure Hollywood. The songs are absolutely great, I had no idea that Elton John could write like that. The best song is "Can you feel the Love Tonight?" but the others go without fault, "Circle of Life" is so spirit rousing especially. Likewise with the voice overs. Jonathan Taylor Thomas is very likable as Young Simba, and Matthew Broderick, while not as good, is above average too. James Earl Jones lends his booming voice to the majestic King Mufassa, and Nathan Lane, Rowan Atkinson and Whoopi Goldberg provide flawless comic relief. The vocal standout is Jeremy Irons as Scar, who frightened me when I was little. Scar is up there with the best Disney villains, like Jafar, Malificent and Frollo. The humour here is fantastic, and you cry here a bit here as well. I highly recommend the stage version in the West End, and the sequels are actually two of the better DTV sequels.10/10. We used to be taken to the AV Room of our school where we would watch this on a projector. We were only allowed to watch it till the period was going on, so I never saw it after the 40 minute mark. I could not even watch it anywhere else since we didn't have a TV at home (and even if we did what was the guarantee that this movie would be coming on it?) and internet wasn't as popular as it is today (although there are many reviews here dated before the time). So I finally watched it in 2006, and here's my review.
Yes, I'm fully aware of the fact that even though Walt Disney Animated Pictures claims this is their first original story, this is in fact stolen from the anime Kimba the White Lion. So in protest I will also not take as much effort as the writer of this movie did. But even with that fact in mind this movie is in fact a spectacle for the eye. The voice acting, the animation, the songs, the coherence, the characters - everything is so wonderful. Simba was pretty cute as a child, which is what brought my interest in lion documentaries.
Instead of remaking the movie in live action, Disney should have just remastered this movie in 4K using AI. It would have been much cheaper and the final product would have also been more well received. They could have removed the 1994 one from their Disney+ library for good which would have made everyone watch the remaster and that would have been a huge profit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Timeless Film
Warning: Spoilers
Ah..."The Lion King." There's so much I can say about this movie but all my comments always come down to one thing: this movie is beautiful. Pure genius. A timeless story. I might be a little biased in my beliefs, seeing as the first movie I remember seeing in theatres is "The Lion King" and I still watch it on a regular basis and know all the words but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who agree with what I have to say. "The Lion King" is beautiful; hands down, it is the best Disney film ever created.

The story is something that everyone can relate to, whether they are a lion ;) or not. Simba is destined to become king one day and just can't wait to rule the throne; everyone can relate to wanting to grow up and become an adult, to do whatever they want and not have to worry about anything. His father tries to teach him that, despite the fact that he will one day be grown and king, his life will not be easy. Simba has to learn his lesson the hard way when his Uncle Scar, who, too, wants the throne, kills his father and convinces Simba that it was his fault. Suddenly, growing up doesn't seem so great anymore (I can *really* relate to that).

And so, Simba flees his home and comes across Timon and Pumbaa, two other outcasts. They teach Simba the "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle, something that idealizes a life free of stress, worry and responsibility. Now, don't we all wish we could live this way? No worries for the rest of our days... But when Simba's childhood friend Nala returns, he realizes that he can't live Hakuna Matata forever, for he does have a responsibility to his pride and his homeland. Simba understands that he must grow up, as we all do, and does what's right.

The songs are catchy and fit the movie well (the original songs, of course, though "The Morning Report" isn't too bad) and the score is haunting and beautiful. Along with the art work, the music captures the heart of Africa.

With the types of shows that children watch these days (boy, doesn't that make me sound old?), it's a wonder they'll learn in virtues and values at all. "The Lion King" is a great teacher when it comes to learning lessons that will carry throughout their lifetime. "The Lion King" teaches children that it's all right to be a kid but you must understand and accept responsibility for things you can and cannot control. Everyone has a place in The Circle of Life and we must find it; the film also teaches that we will encounter bad and even terrible things during our lifetime but we must accept them and move on. These are important, meaningful lessons; heck, I even used them in my SAT essay! "The Lion King" is a film for every generation and is a powerful film that all children should see. I'm past my childhood now and I still watch it whenever I get the chance; I look forward to sharing it with my children.

A timeless film!

However they „borrowed“ heavily from Kimba the White Lion from Osamu Tezuka. If you ask how heavily lets say if it were in reverse Disney would have unleashed hell and sued them into oblivion. There is even a reference or side-blow by the Simpsons in one episode. To be fair I must also admit that they used some original themes. It is the story of the lion Simba who is the son of the king of lions Mufasa. It is a coming of age or self discovery story transferred in the animal Kingdom. There is a lot more to the story that I cant spoil but will say the story was always entertaining. It has a lot of great additional characters like Timon and Pumbaa who transcended the movie and became the stars of their own show. This is not surprising as they are funny, enjoyable and have a dynamic like only a few duos in Disney movie history. There is of cause Mufasa himself who is a role model for a good and wise king and his brother Scar who is one of the best antagonist in Disney movies. There is also Rafiki who nailed the role of elderly wise man. I will also praise the three hyenas Shenzi, Banzai and Ed as Zazu the majordomos and Nala (cant spoil). The greatest strength are the facial animations that are well transferred to the animals. You can see all (human) emotions and can relate perfectly to the characters. This is a weakness of the remake as more realistic means lifeless or emotionless here. But back to this movie. The overall animations are still looking good today (Aged well). I also praise the soundtrack. They got Elton John and Hans Zimmer (and a lot of other stars). I am the kind of person that does not enjoy singing in Disney movies but this is the exception as it won me over. “Hakuna Matata” is great as are “Circle of Life”, “Can you feel the Love tonight” and “I cant wait to be King”. Overall it has a great story with enjoyable characters and you can see the care and thoughtfulness. One of the best Disney movies but a shame that they had to “borrow” so much ideas. Expand

So, I decided to give the original movie a watch since we're in Lockdown and my god, this movie holds up so well. The animation for this movie holds up very well and it doesn't look dated at all. Also, the plot for this movie is great and so are the characters and the voice actors for these fantastically well developed characters. Even the characters are very memorable, I honestly don't think they're forgettable at any moment throughout this masterpiece of a movie. Finally, the score is outstandingly beautiful from the man himself Hans Zimmer and it works very well throughout the movies scenes. Also, I forgot to mention the sing along songs throughout this movie worked very well, which I really liked. Overall, it's a masterpiece from Disney and it's one of my honest favourite's and it holds up very well if that's with the animation, voice actors, the score you name it, all together it's an amazingly well made movie and it's worth the watch. King Mufasa's and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill, the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and is angered by the birth of the new prince. This is the subject of an argument with first Mufasa's majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, then Mufasa himself.

A few years later, Mufasa shows a young Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life", which connects all living things. Meanwhile, Scar plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom Simba is betrothed) into exploring a forbidden elephants' graveyard by tricking Zazu. However, the cubs are soon attacked by three spotted hyenas, Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, who are in league with Scar. Mufasa intervenes and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba.

Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. Scar himself does not interfere to save Simba, but instead informs Mufasa of Simba's peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son. Mufasa saves Simba but ends up hanging perilously from the gorge's edge. Scar refuses to help Mufasa, instead, sending him falling to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advises him to leave the kingdom and never return. He orders the hyenas to kill the cub, but Simba escapes. Scar tells the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede and steps forward as the new king, allowing his three hyena minions and the rest of their large pack to live in the Pride Lands.

Simba collapses in a desert and is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, who are fellow outcasts and chase away the vultures. Simba grows up in the jungle with his two new friends, living a carefree life under the motto "hakuna matata" ("no worries" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, telling him that Pride Lands have become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar's reign. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He then encounters Rafiki, who tells him that Mufasa's spirit lives on in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take his rightful place as king. Realizing that he can no longer run from his past, Simba decides to return to the Pride Lands.

Aided by his friends, Simba sneaks past the hyenas at Pride Rock and confronts Scar, who had just struck Sarabi. Scar taunts Simba over his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to him that he murdered Mufasa. Enraged, Simba pins Scar to the ground and forces him to reveal the truth to the rest of the pride. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fend off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape, is cornered by Simba at the top of Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and attempts to blame the hyenas for his actions; Simba spares his life but orders him to leave the Pride Lands forever. Scar attacks his nephew, but Simba manages to toss him from the top of the rock. Scar survives the fall but is attacked and killed by the hyenas, who overheard his attempt to betray them. Afterward, Simba takes over the kingship as rain begins to fall. He also makes Nala his queen.

Later, with Pride Rock restored to its usual state, Rafiki presents Simba and Nala's newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.

The picture is saturated with good, which recalls such important things as family and friendship in the era of left-liberal **** and tolerance of the concept of family and friendship they want to cut to hell. The plot, the art, the music - everything is gorgeous. Incendiary dances, songs and dialogues of the heroes, and their humor - all this for a long time stuck in my head. We wound up shaking our heads afterwards, wondering what made it such a winner. The story is simplistic and violent, and some of the images seem awfully retro in their impact -- for example, all the good guys are a lovely light tawny shade while the villains are dark and, in one scene, the huge glowing eyes and teeth in the dark faces seem designed to make children afraid of African faces for life. The music was very so-so, the voice-acting generally good. There are many other movies I would want to see before trying this one again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Totalmente recomendada. Expand

Even when the characters are all animals, their emotions are conveyed through great facial expressions that can make you watch the movie with the sound off and still understand what is going on. The vibrant colors really help to make the settings feel alive. It also tells a rich, compelling and mature story about learning to confront the past and not running away from it. The reason why this movie's story feels so compelling and mature is thanks to wonderful writing. This movie is for kids, sure, but it never feels like dumb or immature, this is a movie that I appreciate a lot more now as an adult and understand the themes this movie tackles. It's unbelieveable how much effort was put into every single aspect of the visual presentation and the writing. All characters are filled with personality thanks to genius character design. The songs are some of the best in any Disney movie ever. Every single song is memorable and amazing (personally the "worst" song of the movie is Hakuna Matata, but even that isn't a bad song) and help the story move forward. The score...Oh my God, the score, it must be one of the best scores I've ever heard in my life and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks this movie's score is phenomenal. I honestly want to cry when I hear the score played during the last 10 minutes of the movie.

My only issues with this movie is probably some writing problems. As much as I praised the writing, there's only one fart joke that honestly felt annoying and almost ruined what was a flawless humor, I said almost because, thank god it was just one of that obnoxious type of humor. Probably Scar's motivation is also a really nitpicking issue, like...Why did he want to rule the kingdom? Anyway, that's literally the only issues I have and they do not lower the score in any way.

Seriously it's shocking to see how much effort was put into every single aspect of this movie, literally every aspect. This is a flawless movie, sure, it's not the best Disney movie but it's still a masterpiece of animation.

P.S.: No, this is not a Kimba ripoff. The story of Kimba has absolutely nothing to do with The Lion King. Kimba doesn't have characters as compelling as this movie, nor a score as epic, nor an animation as stellar as this movie. A stolen concept or not, I really don't care, because the result in the end, it's just wonderful.

I liked the music and its messages. It still remains a classic and l think its sequel was equal to its prodecessor. One of my favorite Disney movies. Expand

I had high hopes for this movie, but on all my viewings, I felt very disappointed. The film does not have much to offer, unlike other Disney masterpieces. I hope to have better viewings of this film in the future.

Lion King is an old and repeated story's unilateral model, as seen in Romeo and Juliet, but even so it's a film full of soul and beauty and visually, even after 25 years, it looks like it was produced yesterday.

First of all, the music in this film is just so iconic and no matter what generation you are a part of you have heard these songs more than once. It’s not just the songs that I’m talking about the score, composed by Hans Zimmer, isFirst of all, the music in this film is just so iconic and no matter what generation you are a part of you have heard these songs more than once. It’s not just the songs that I’m talking about the score, composed by Hans Zimmer, is spectacular. The score fits so well with every scene and it helps to intensify the scene. The entire movie is just filled with incredible music. The animation in this film is stunning and, in my opinion, looks better than some of the animated movies we have now a day. The animals have amazing detail on them and you can easily tell that the animators put a lot of effort into making each and every detail. Not just with the animals but the background as well. This is best shown in the “I Just can’t Wait to be King” song where the animators took the time to change up the backgrounds to help convey that this is a dream sequence. I know it’s weird to mention cinematography in an animated film but honestly, this film almost feels like a live-action film and I will do whatever I want because the cinematography is outstanding in this film. From shots where they are showing a bright scene and then quickly changing to dark is just amazing. The characters in this film feel three-dimensional and anybody can easily relate to one or more of the characters. From the people who are free and easy-going like Timon and Pumbaa to the protective parent like Mufasa they all are relatable and had great voice casting. Everybody was perfectly voice casted and I could easily see them as that character. I only really had a problem sometimes with Matthew Broderick where a couple of times I couldn’t really hear it. This film has a great message in it that you shouldn’t run away from your problems but deal with them right then and there in the present. In the end, this film is perfect for anybody and everybody. I've seen the trailers from it in VHS's years ago when I was a kid and teenager, taken from The Fox and the Hound, Sleeping Beauty, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Pocahontas, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Aristocats, Aladdin and The Sword in the Stone. This movie did so well it grossed a total of $968. How's that for a Disney movie. I gotta tell ya, this is one of my favourite Disney films of all time. I think it's everybody favourites as well. Hell, I actually cried at one scene but I'll get to that later. The songs are catchy and memorable like songs called Circle of Life, that's a powerful song, I Just Can't Wait To Be King, the one that I've sing is Be Prepared, there's Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel The Love Tonight. There's another by Elton John which my friend Sam Hudson liked cause he likes Elton John. As you know, the songs are by Elton John and Tim Rice. Even the music sounds different. Listen to the powerful verses from every music taken from every scene from this masterpiece. It's composed by Hans Zimmer. I've just found out that he most movies in the decade. He just the master of music. One of my friends loved it. actually there's only one person who actually love it and that is my friend who is from my old school and who is obsessed with this The Lion King, he's name is Matthew Fender. I gotta tell you, me and Matthew have been quoting dialogue. Like I said me and my friends been doing it non-stop. We were singing songs from it. The animation is just top notch. The animator used the same animation what they did like in The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. They use hand drawn animation and computer animation together to make the animation look realistic. It's fantastic. The characters are memorable and hilariously funny. There's Simba voiced by Matthew Broderick, Mufasa the most powerful king in the entire world and teaches Simba how to become a great king, he is voiced by James Earl Jones, there's Scar who is my favourite Disney villain who is makes me laugh and takes over Pride Rock. He also gets some funny lines like ''That was today? Ohh, I felt simply awful! Must have slip my mind.'' and ''An elephant graveyard is no place for a young prince. Oops!'' Hilarious, isn't it? The two pals Timon and Pumbaa, they're funny and they get there own TV show. Nala who is best friend, Zazu Mufasa's majordomo and guess what? He's voiced by Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson. How fascinating is that, huh? The wise old Rafiki, shaman of the Pride Lands and then there's three funny hyenas, Shenzi who is sassy and she plays by Whoopi Goldberg, Banzai who is funny and aggressive and he's voiced by Cheech Marin who also voiced Tito from Oliver and Company. Actually two characters from Cheech Marin is hilarious and funny. And Ed who does not talk but only laughs. Man, these characters are so great I could even think the three hyenas who are the highlight of this movie and they even get some funny lines like Banzai says ''Mufasa!'' and other characters Zazu even Timon and Pumbaa. Now let's get on with the scenes. The scenes are hilarious, powerful and groundbraking even the story makes the film strong and extraordinary. The scene where Mufasa shows Simba how to become a great king and the scene where Simba, Nala and Zazu went to the elephant graveyard after Simba singing I Just Can't Wait To The King they come across three hyenas so they escaped but Zazu is captured and puts into the geysor and flew away, the scene where Scar singing ''Be Prepared'' that's a really great song. The stampede scene is just brilliant and so powerful with the most powerful music ever put on film where Simba gets chased by Wildebeests in the gorge and Mufasa saves him and begs Scar to help him but Scar kills Mufasa. Now while I was watching Mufasa's death I was in tears. Remember what I said in the Turner and Hooch film? That's what I mean. And I gotta tell you guys, much like Bambi where Bambi's mom is shot, you don't see the body. In this one though, you see Mufasa's body. That is a saddest and upsetting thing for kids! But what makes the stampede scene look great and magical is the animation. The wildebeests is made from computer animation and the characters are hand drawn animation. It is big! If you take a look of that scene you might be look at it on Blu ray standard because that is the magic. Everyone remembers the songs, the story, the characters, the music, the animation, everything about it is A-MA-ZING! Matthew Fender and I love quoting the lines from it and just like me, Jacob and Liam though this is the most powerful Disney film to be ever remembered and loved. Absolutely phenomenal film! Remember, we are all connected in the great Circle of Life. Expand

Good : A. Family. Entertainer. Those three words have apparently lost the meaning at the present date, or should I say, they have lost the quality. This is a movie that everyone will enjoy. At a time where a movie with a G rating usually means "Garbage", revisiting a really incredible G rated movie is a really strange experience. A kid's movie will usually have unrealistic optimism, a ton of cheese and boredom. Even kids don't like them so much. This being a kid's film is still a very excellent movie, with no cheese or unrealistic optimism. The characters are excellent. Every character has a strong distinction from one another. That's something I noted yesterday when I rewatched it. Not just that they're distinct, but they're believable. Mufasa is a noble king, a true leader. Scar is a pure evil, and has a tremendously menacing presence. Simba is a naive kid who feels guilty for something that he didn't even do. And, none of that feels too on the nose. That is a big plus point because there are films we may be forced to watch with the kids and we get an utter cringe out of it. Apart from the characters, the interaction between the characters is another awesome stuff to talk about in this movie. Simba and Mufasa's conversations exhibit the father-son love in an excellent manner. Scar may feel like a generic villain, but his actions are too f**king menacing for a kid's movie. His conversations with Simba add the evilness I am talking about. Timon and Pumbaa are quite interesting characters. Timon reminded me of Rocket Raccoon from the Marvel movies. They resemble each other in many ways and both are very likable characters. It was this recent viewing which made me notice the similarities between the characters. They also serve for a comedic purposes very well. The animation of this movie is also pretty awesome. Some '90s animations do not age well. This does age very well. Take away everything - story, characters, etc and look only at the animation. It still is very beautiful and holds up to this date. Speaking of the story, it may feel a little familiar. The popular movies like Thor, Aquaman, Black Panther, etc have a similar story. But since it came out decades before they did, I must say that they did a very good job because even if you have watched films like the ones I mentioned, and you haven't watched this, you will still be entertained with it. There is a very good character development of Simba and Scar is given enough reasons to be a likable villain. All the goods I mentioned are the goods I noted years ago when I first watched it, which hold up even to this date. The voices for the characters, I almost forgot to mention it. The voices for each of the characters were on simply perfect. All the voices suited the characters and those voice performances integrated whatever the characters were feeling. Yet another excellent thing. All in all, a really good family entertainment. It has dated just like wine. Mixed. The runtime is too less. It should've been around 2 hours or a little longer. There are some elements of the story which are completed in a montage, some reveals are given abruptly and things happen really fast without enough excitement and drama behind it, specially towards the end. The final battle between Simba and Scar could've been a lot more interesting. Not meaning that it was boring, but could've been great. Even that f**king whacked a$$ s**t named "Jason Takes Manhattan" is 100 minutes long, which could've been over at around 55 minutes. This movie needed to be longer. That's all the issues I had with it. .
.
Conclusion : Though it has some story issues, it doesn't make the movie a bad movie. Thoroughly enjoyable and memorable. They are going to release the remake this year. The trailers exhibit very god CGI and looks quite promising. Hope they will retain all its great aspects and fix the issues with it. .

This is a film which balances joy with tragedy with such a simplistic yet precise tone, that it becomes a progressive ideal for young minds.

For its entire run time, directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff remained perfectly focused, offering insight through well-defined personalities. These characters are not complicated to understand, you know from the very first time you see each of them what they are like and what part they are going to play. Scar (Jeremy Irons) rocks the villain look with a ragged voice and green eyes, always surrounded by flames (both green and red - go figure), Mufasa (James Earl Jones) is the alpha male, an ideal king and man.. er... lion, and all the way to Simba (Matthew Broderick) the soft, spoiled, unpolished prince learning about his destiny through tough lessons.

All these personalities seem cliche and the way this film unfolds is predictable, yes, but this is not what its about. By keeping its ideas simple and straight-forward, it flows beautifully and while we might know where the ride is going, we still love to go on it. This simplicity is easy to manage which results in this film having absolutely no filler scenes whatsoever and, more so, it gives the film's ideas power. These are responsibility, adulthood, friendship. Disney challenged themselves in blending pure joy with adult themes, yet presenting them to children in a very symbolic way.

Through its masterful soundtrack, perfect placing of music moments, it manages to blend some harsh scenes with an extravagant presentation. The world is always alive and by the film's end I realized just how intelligent and progressive thinking it is. Imagine a family with children watching this. Throughout the moments of shock, their innocent minds might be filled with questions. Questions which their parents will have to answer. Dad, is Mufasa really dead? Can this happen? He is the king!

This is a blossoming masterpiece to behold. It is always alive, even at its darkest. Its ambition, boldness, simplicity and progressive philosophy makes it not only an easy film to follow but, in hindsight, one whose straight plot line is not only focused, but filled with basic but important ideologies. If you will not fall in love with 'Lion King', chances are you will never fall in love with a film.

Last time I saw it I was 5 years old, and now, having rewatched it, I realized the plot isn't that good. It merely pleads for sympathy together with a beautiful picture, but isn't motivated or complicated enough if you're older than 7. The whole episode of Simba's return and the fight is just awkward. Also, why would Scar be such a bad king? You can't deny he was clever and probably knew how to rule, while Simba didn't. Each move in the plot, and often even speeches were easilly guessable to me (and I didn't remember anything). Also, Kimba's plot base most probably defined the success of this one. The sequel imo shows that Disney couldn't make a good Lion King on their own.
Needless to say though, music and animation are awesome.

It shows that our passing through here will end, we born, learn, grow, conquer and go away, it's like the Circle of life. There are dialogues during the movie that teaches how to handle mourning, that calm down and really help people that are struggling with something rough. As we accompany Simba on his journey to become a true King, we gonna feel in our on skin, the rage that some characters pass, the true sadness as if we have lost a friend or a relative, that really maked me cry so hard that my face got bugged, the happiness of a true friendship that makes me laugh and feel so well. It's a mix of emotions in their most sincere way.
The movie works 100% both for kids and adults, having aspects that they both gonna take and will touch their feelings. A very important quote on the movie, that is even more important for kids, is that you have to obey your parents, you have to trust in them, otherwise you gonna put yourself in danger and with problems. There is one specific moment that Simba say to Mufasa that they gonna play together forever, and Mufasa just say and prepare his son to his death, showing for us also, that one day our loved ones also gonna go, but at the same time it declares that they gonna live forever on the sky and will always be watching for us, very emotional and important moment. And later on the movie, Simba look at a reflection of himself and se his father, showing that our ones that are already gone will always live in us forever and be part of everything that we are.
Another very important matter that will impacts in literally all of us, independent of the age or anything, is about the past. Sometimes we need to change, wich is good, but is hard, because of our past most of the time, that we runs away from it. And we have to choose if we gonna run away or face it and learn with it. Also that you can't forget who you are and from where did you came from, DON'T FORGET WHO YOU ARE. Confront your guilt, assume your role in life and grow, mature. Face what there is new in life, not fear it, but go into it.
The characters Timon and Pumba are just genious, just like that, two great philosophers, all about the Hakuna Matata thing, is a thing you take for your life, that bad things happen, but head up and keep going, a not worries, problem-free.. maybe true happiness.
Even with all that said, all the things that it teachs that are completely necessary for life, it also have a great story, cleary based on Hamlet and Kimba for example, even if Disney don't admits it, with great characters every single one having their purpose that are all perfectly done and interpretate. The viusuals are all great, the visuals are stunning, showing the hole environment. They introduced a lot of animals, showing how some respect the king, how some hate it, show that some animals are marginals, they don't rock with the rest of the forest, demonstrating that some places are nice and others aren't, it is all much well done in just 1h30min. all worked out. With possibly the best prologue ever made. It shows the time passing, the transition between Simba kid and adult, happens in a brillaint way, inserting into the music, it is natural, doesn't seem any strange or wrong, you can feel the time. The villain is great, you see how Scar is moved by jealousy, he does his wickedness with something behind it all, he is frightener and you will hate him, he is pure evil and manipulative, when he shows up, the colors refers to hell, with red collors, and sometimes refering even to nazism, Scar is that big one as a villain.
Now the soundtracks are phenomenal, Hans Zimmer did a job that is at the same level as the entire movie, it just makes it even more great, the song will talk to us during the hole movie in a way that really a very few movies does, will make us scary or even more sad than we already were because of the scene for example, in some moments of dialogue he takes the violin into a hole other level that the music kind feel like is one with everything, is perfect. The musics are phenomenal and so memorable, that you just don't stop singing never ever in your life again, once that you watch it in any language, it will be stucked in your mind, together with all the feelings of the moments. The musics pretty much help to give us an entertaining teaching, all the musics lycris have a meaning that will help you to get all thoose teaching that i did mentioned before.
The Lion King is one of the movies that is just necessary for you to watch by yourself, and principally to watch with your kids, once that you got kids, watch it with them, multiple times, it will make their lifes more complety and understandable.

Hakuna Matata!

This film tells the story of Simba, a lion cub who is son of Mufasa, the king of the savanna. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, two veterans of Disney, featured several well-known actors to the voices of the English version, as Matthew Broderick (adult Simba), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Jeremy Irons (Scar, the villain) Rowan Atkinson (Zazu, the king's collaborator) and Whoopi Goldberg (Shenzi, one of the hyenas).

It is one of the biggest hits in the history of Disney studios so far, a magical film that tells a story of a young cub who, after being victim of a tragedy and family hatreds, goes in search of his place in the world. And he will have the help of two of the most beloved Disney characters: Timon and Pumba, an unlikely (a meerkat and a warthog) but inseparable pair of friends. The songs of this movie were written and composed by Tim Rice, Sir Elton John and Hans Zimmer. Some of them have become big hits which are still remembered and sung, especially "I Just Can not Wait To Be King", "Hakuna Matata" and "Can you feel the love tonight".

For all this reasons, "The Lion King" is a timeless film which will be seen and remembered by generations children and adults, while there is cinema.

I liked it a lot. The characters made me feel many emotions. A very sad scene is in it, and a lot of happy scenes. The animation was amazing, a thought the voice acting was good too. Another great classic.

The songs were memorable and amazing, the characters were believable (and arguably acted more human than many movies with human actors), and the animation was vibrant and lush, depicting a unique style of art, and still getting the movements of the characters down pat. The story really digs deep into Simba's character, which leaves the other characters a bit stagnant, but that's not to say they aren't developed. They each have their own part to play in the story. The comic relief detracts from the heavier story just enough to keep the feature from being too depressing (it is disney, they like a lighter feel to their movies).

Now, on the controversy some people have brought up about "Disney ripping off 'Kimba: The White Lion'", I looked into it, and in terms of story and characters, it seems the two are separate. Some art direction seems to have gone the same direction, although Disney and the guys who did Kimba did start working together on a project related to Kimba. The project was scrapped, but the people who had worked on the project probably decided to adapt some concept art to Lion King. Btw, the similarity of the names "Simba" and "Kimba" is probably coincidental, considering most of the names in "The Lion King" are based on Swahili words (simba means 'lion').

Regardless, it is a solid movie that I recommend.

The inspiration for these recent films comes fromThe film is the latest in a series of annual media events from Disney, which with "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin" reinvented its franchise of animated feature films. The inspiration for these recent films comes from the earliest feature cartoons created by Walt Disney himself, who in movies like "Dumbo," with the chaining of Mrs. Jumbo, and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," with its wicked stepmother, tapped into primal fears and desires. Later Disney films drifted off into the neverland of innocuous "children's movies," which were harmless but not very exciting. These most recent four animated features are once again true "family films," in that they entertain adults as well as children.

"The Lion King" is the first Disney animated feature not based on an existing story. In another sense, it is based on half the stories in classical mythology. It tells the tale of the birth, childhood and eventual manhood of Simba, a lion cub. The cub's birth is announced in the opening sequence of the movie, called "The Circle of Life," which is an evocative collaboration of music and animation to show all of the animals of the African veld gathering to hail their future king. The cute little cub is held aloft from a dramatic spur of rock, and all his future minions below hail him, in a staging that looks like the jungle equivalent of a political rally.

Of course this coming together of zebra and gazelle, monkey and wildebeest, fudges on the uncomfortable fact that many of these animals survive by eating one another. And all through "The Lion King" the filmmakers perform a balancing act between the fantasy of their story and the reality of the jungle. Early scenes show Simba as a cute, trusting little tike who believes everyone loves him. He is wrong. He has an enemy - his uncle Scar, the king's jealous brother, who wants to be king himself one day.

Villains are often the most memorable characters in a Disney animated film, and Scar is one of the great ones, aided by a pack of yipping hyenas who act as his storm troopers. With a voice by Jeremy Irons, and facial features suggestive of Irons' gift for sardonic concealment, Scar is a mannered, manipulative schemer who succeeds in bringing about the death of the king.

Worse, he convinces Simba that the cub is responsible, and the guilty little heir slinks off into the wastelands. (The movie makes a sly reference to a famous earlier role by Irons. When Simba tells him, "You're so weird," he replies "You have no idea," in exactly the tone he used in "Reversal of Fortune.") It is an unwritten law that animated features have comic relief, usually in the form of a duet or trio of goofy characters who become buddies with the hero. This time they are a meerkat named Timon (voice by Nathan Lane) and a warthog named Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), who cheer up Simba during his long exile.

The movie has a large cast of other colorful characters, including a hornbill named Zazu (Rowan Atkinson), who is confidant and advisor to King Mufasa (James Earl Jones). And there are the three hyenas (with voices by Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin and Jim Cummings), who are a tumbling, squabbling, yammering team of dirty tricks artists.

The early Disney cartoons were, of course, painstakingly animated by hand. There has been a lot of talk recently about computerized animation, as if a computer program could somehow create a movie. Not so. Human animators are responsible for the remarkably convincing portrayals of Scar and the other major characters, who somehow combine human and animal body language. But computers did assist with several remarkable sequences, including a stampede in which a herd seems to flow past the camera.

Despite the comic relief from the hyenas, the meerkat and the warthog, "The Lion King" is a little more subdued than "Mermaid," "Beauty" and "Aladdin." The central theme is a grim one: A little cub is dispossessed, and feels responsible for the death of its father.

An uncle betrays a trust.

And beyond the gently rolling plans of the great savanna lies a wasteland of bones and ashes. Some of the musical comedy numbers break the mood, although with the exception of "Circle of Life" and "Hakuna Matata," the songs in "The Lion King" are not as memorable as those in "Mermaid" and "Beauty." Basically what we have here is a drama, with comedy occasionally lifting the mood. The result is a surprising seriousness; this isn't the mindless romp with cute animals that the ads might lead you to expect. Although the movie may be frightening and depressing to the very young, I think it's positive that "The Lion King" deals with real issues. By processing life's realities in stories, children can prepare themselves for more difficult lessons later on. The saga of Simba, which in its deeply buried origins owes something to Greek tragedy and certainly to "Hamlet," is a learning experience as well as an entertainment. 3.5/4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The artistic medium of film is very subjective. Every audience member has a different set of criteria they use to measure their viewing experience. Not everyone shares the same set of criteria. If we did, what a bland and uninspired world this would be.

What I Personally Liked About "The Lion King":
Every good film starts with a good skeletal structure: the story itself. From that story, all of the other pieces will fall into place. In this case, the story is a beautifully told one centered on familial commitment, the responsibilities you have to yourself and the obligations you have to those who count on your support. The maturation of a destined character has always been a great structural starting point and this time it delivers in abundance. There is also some very good hard-edged humor, particularly surrounding Scar, which doesn't play down to younger audiences. Instead, it treats all of its viewers as equals; something modern Disney filmmakers have a tendency to toss aside. The animation itself is peerless, filled with wonderfully bright colors, crisp lines, deep shadows, lush greenery, and sharply drawn leads. The animation is backed with some of the best voice work Disney had yet utilized in one of their movies. James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Whoopi Goldberg and Nathan Lane fill the spotlight with their charm and add a wonderful dimension to the characters they portray. There are a couple of unforgettable specifics to this animated classic to go over as well. Mufasa's death scene, for one. It is a somber, restrained affair with a perfectly accented score and a real sense of loss defining the event. Too, the epic, slow motion fight sequence between Simba and Scar backlit by the burning embers beneath Pride Rock is a visually stunning treat one rarely sees in a Disney film.

What I Personally Disliked About "The Lion King":
There is a song in this film entitled "Be Prepared." Not only is it the weakest song of the picture, but it is also the worst blot on Jeremy Irons' otherwise impeccable career. Irons gives a menacing performance throughout the rest of the film. His dark, creepy delivery of the lines sends chills up and down my spine each and every time I hear them. That merely makes this horrible song seem more out of place. It shamefully slows down the pace of the film where a macabre monologue would have better served the purpose of the story. Fortunately, there's really not much else to dislike about this presentation.

My Overall Impression of "The Lion King":
Not only would I classify this as the single best film Disney released in its decade, I would also offer the opinion that this is the best film Disney has released since 1994 (excluding Pixar's involvement). It has a wealth of memorable music, a powerful story arc, excellent animation, and fitting vocal performances. Animation simply does not get much better than this.

The 1990s was a very strong decade for the Walt Disney Studios, as they came off a string of successes with 'The Little Mermaid' (1989), 'Beauty and the Beast' (1991) (this is MY favorite Disney film) and 'Aladdin' (1992).

Even after 'The Lion King', there were other films that were not appreciated by the critics mostly, but audiences loved anyway, 'Pocahontas' (1995) and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1996) spring to mind.

'The Lion King' is essentially Hamlet, but with lions, it opens with the best opening sequence I've seen in any film, animated or live-action. "The Circle of Life" is an iconic song to open with an we see the sun rising and all the different animals of different breeds gather around to witness the birth of their new future king. A lion cub is lifted before them and the animals bow together. The lion cub is Simba and we witness his adventure in the movie.

We meet his uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) who is jealous as he wants to be king, but the birth of Simba compromises his chances, and his brother Mufasa (James Earl Jones) tries to reason with Scar.

Simba gets into a predicament where Scar plans to kill Mufasa and tells Simba to run away. Unlike Disney's 'Bambi' (1942), the death of Mufasa happens on-screen and can be traumatizing to the younger audience.

As Simba has run away, he meets a meerkat and a warthog, Timon and Pumbaa who raise Simba from his teen years into his adulthood. But when Scar is king of Pride Rock, the entire group want Simba back and gain his status as the rightful king.

Of all the Disney films released in the 1990s, 'The Lion King' is the one people speak highly of the most, and for good reason as it is less sugar-coated than 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Beauty and the Beast' and less comical than 'Aladdin'. The movie tells a serious story with the occasional comedy to lighten up the mood for when the film gets too serious. The songs are catchy too and the story is not hard to follow, even for kids.

So why did I give this film a 9 instead of the perfect 10 everybody is rating it? Well, I do think that 'Beauty and the Beast' (1991) is actually the best film from Disney and 'The Lion King', for me, has some flaws that prevent it from being perfect. Everybody seems to over-praise this film, but here are my problems.

The songs for me, were a little disappointing, considering they are by Tim Rice and Elton John, I only loved "The Circle of Life" and "Be Prepared"...I found "I Just can't wait to be King" and "Hakuna Matata" a little annoying, even as a kid. "Can you feel the love tonight?" felt a little shoe-horned in the film, but the Elton John version is brilliant.

Certain things happen in the third act still make no sense to me, even as a child I didn't understand and still don't understand now. Let's just say that a certain character admits their faults and the film can end after that. I couldn't help but feel that the third act felt rushed just so it can get to the conclusion.

However, the positives do outweigh the negatives, the animation is still as beautiful as ever (particularly "The Circle of Life" sequence), the film tells a really good story and there is pure heart and emotion put into this picture.

I don't think 'The Lion King' is the best Disney film of all time, that title, for me, goes to 'Beauty and the Beast' (1991), but this is definitely in my top 10.

AHHHHHHHHHHH SEVENYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

To start off, this is the movie your kids deserve to watch and nothing less quality if you want to like good movies in the future. I kid kid, but although I give this movie a 8, it's actually more of a 8.5 for me. The movie is easy to understand and it was purposely made for youth so don't get so uptight about this movie not being Shawshank or Inceptionlike. That being said, this review is for those who haven't seen it.
Music...easy A man. This is stuff that you should know even in your sleep. It's a kid movie so expect the musical aspect to seep in here and there. Sing along too or else you're just not experiencing what the producers made

Plot/Characters: im 20 years old and I'm still not ready to accept some of the scenes but I know that every movie needs a basic problem and solution. That being said, this is a timeless work.

I appreciate that the writers actually took time to research the animals and setting shown in this movie. That is bonus points for me when someone does their homework and executes perfectly.

If i had to describe this movie in one word, it would be: rainbow. The reason for that is that you will feel all those colors in the rainbow throughout this movie. Yes, it's animated but don't let that ever dictate what is good.

Watch this with a friend and call up a homie that has seen this before. I recommend calling up the crew to get that singalong going on.

This movie entices children with its memorable songs and fantastic characters. It is one of Disney’s greatest musicals, even though there are some scary moments. Despite the few violent scenes, the overall messages portrayed are hope, love, family, and responsibility. This film is a great choice for children as well as adults.
The film is about Simba (Jonathon Taylor Thomas) and how he “just can’t wait to be king.” That being said, his evil Uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) is extremely jealous of his brother Mufasa (James Earl Jones) because Mufasa is the king of the jungle. His extreme jealously gets the best of him, and Scar has Mufasa killed by a stampede and makes Simba feel responsible. Simba, feeling overwhelming guilt and despair, then runs away and becomes friends with Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella) and Timon (Nathan Lane) who teach him that the best philosophy is “Hakuna Matata”, which means no worries. Simba is having the best time while with Timon and Pumbaa. He feels free and great about himself because he has nothing to worry about. Simba grows up thinking he has escaped his childhood until his old friend Nala, who is living under Scar’s leadership, finds him and tells him that the tribe has been having severe issues.
The Lion King was originally inspired by William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet. The Lion King’s themes and imagery relate to cultural and political situations in the United States and Africa. Along with this, many parts of the film resemble a famous Japanese television show Kimba the White Lion. Two characters in this show are Kimba and Simba. In The Lion King, the camera angles and composition are almost identical to this television show. The voice of Simba almost believed he was working on a remake of Kimba because he was familiar with the show. The movie is mainly about lifestyle choices and collective responsibility. This is where the majority of the movie got several of its ideas.
The protagonist, Simba, starts off as a rebellious character whom then grows up and learns to accept his responsibilities instead of seeking revenge. The characters in the film are always filled with energy which shows how much hard work went into each character and their personality, looks, and overall appearance. Each character has there own appealing look and personality, which draws so much attention to them. Along with this, they each have a voice that is very engaging to listen to. The characters have comical senses of humor and perform each scene in a joyful way. When Mufasa emerges in a cloud for Simba and talks to him, he gives Simba hope and inspires him to go and regain his throne. This scene shows how family is always there for you, even when all hope is gone. Not only are the characters funny, but they have a meaningful and serious side as well.
The Lion King is a spectacular film for all ages. Although the movie is a cartoon, it is appealing to adults as well because it has a message behind it that can captivate even the oldest of audiences. Even if the children do not grasp the entirety of the overall message, they still love the film because of its entertainment. It keeps you interested the entire time and captivates everyone into feeling compelled to finish it. The directors and producers used great sounds effects and were able to get the audience to sing along with them. The colors and their brightness that was used enhances the film and makes it much more enjoyable and fun to watch. Every scene has an attracting look and amusing music, which always makes it pleasurable to watch. They used music to connect the funny scenes back to the overall message such as “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata”. Circle of Life is played during the ceremony when Simba is born and at the end for Simba and Nala’s newborn club. Simba is baptized here and the whole kingdom comes together to see him. Hakuna Matata is played when Simba arrives at the jungle home and continues to play during a sequence in which Simba grows up. This shows that Simba puts his problems behind him and lives the life he wants. The music makes a child not want to take their eyes off the screen because of the energetic characters and catchy rhythm. The filmmakers used animated programs to show their visuals. The stampede scene was created in a 3D computer program so the characters could be multiplied. The visuals are very clever and give off a fun, loving, and spirited tone. The movie is presented with amazing animation, music, and choreography. The animators of the story studied real-life animals for reference and some even journeyed on a trip to Africa. This assisted in how the animators made the characters act during many of the scenes. This also helped them to better understand the animal environment and way of life. A wildlife expert visited the studio to help the writers with the animal behavior and to help the artists with their drawings. Brenda Chapman, one of the story heads, said that writing an original story is very challenging because there is nothing to fall back on.
The Lion King displays that if one is in a dark place, be strong and take the next challenge as it comes. Each character has there own way of doing this, which makes the film so much more interesting to watch. The film portrays many different ideas and responsibilities making it a movie for everyone to watch and enjoy with a lesson learned. The writers created a wonderful original story. The filmmakers did an incredible job with the characters, scenery, and animation. The Lion King is a warm, loving, fun film that everyone should have a chance to see.

It's a movie that just about all people can enjoy. There are no flaws that bring down this movie whatsoever. Every single level of production goes way beyond its expectations. From the excellent main cast to the classic musical numbers, everything about this movie is memorable. This film should be used as a tool for up-and-coming animators who want to make movies at the same level of this movie. There aren't any movies that are as good as this, and there never will be another movie that even surpasses this movie in quality. The Lion King is an epic masterpiece that takes so many risks and overcomes all of them. Expand

Honestly, The Lion King may not get the highest rating from me but it will always be my favorite animated movie of all time. Star studded cast that does their job well, Great and memorable songs, Likeable characters. Only thing I don't careHonestly, The Lion King may not get the highest rating from me but it will always be my favorite animated movie of all time. Star studded cast that does their job well, Great and memorable songs, Likeable characters. Only thing I don't care for was the casting of Matthew Broderick as the adult Simba, I didn't feel that he fit the part well. Aside from that, It's a great movie and once again, My favorite animated film of all time. Expand
