And while as expected, it was visually amazing and detailed, storywise, it was pretty much a near shot-for-shot and dialogue-for-dialogue remake of the original. It all felt a little too rehashed, which isn't quite what I was hoping for. Granted, it did make a handful of minor tweaks and adjustments in spots and moments, but none of them felt quite as fresh or as funny as in the original. One other big pro, however, was the voice cast! Donald 'Childish Gambino' Glover felt like a good choice for adult Simba, while Beyonce voiced Nala perfectly. James Earl Jones (Mufasa) notably is the only original voice actor from the original to return, but hey, no one else can voice that character! Overall, it's visually entertaining, and the voice cast keeps it relatively fun, but it's just the same old story with little to no changes to any original scenes or dialogue, so hopefully that doesn't detract from how much others might enjoy it. These pretentious **** crap all over anything that's good and enjoyable and praise absolute trash so they can be "edgy and different". ALL REVIEW SITES SHOULD PUT THE VIEWER RATINGS FIRST AND UPFRONT, that's the real score most of us care about anyways.

the movie wasn't amazing, but if you remember the original from so many years ago then this will stir up all the right kinds of emotions just as the original did. The music, the story and the humor were all there, me and my GF thoroughly enjoyed it. And I don't think it's just nostalgia as there were little kids who seemed to laugh and enjoy the movie too and it must have been their first time watching the lion king.

For me... A Remake/Reboot is Never negative, and i encourage more to be made~

Would a Game Remake be inherently bad? Would a Song Cover? Would a Redraw? Would a "Re-Animated" Project?

That's how i see the non-problem of these Disney Reboots/Remakes, People say that they feel no Soul in it, unlike the Original, but i see effort and pride in the work, Sure the figureheads and shareholders are Greedy muckers that only think of profit, BUT, It's not all of the mind of the crew involved in the project, and i know that.

I know hatin' on 'Reboots/Remakes is popular, but some people really like 'em! Movie was a 09/10 from me and my Family!!~ ✨

I was even more impressed seeing the Broadway musical version 3 times including just this past May 9, 2019, in Miami and each time my jaw dropped to the floor with the opening number. Now we have a live action/CGI version. I admit I haven't the slightest idea what that means except the talking animals really seem to move and talk just as human actors do!

I very seldom have good things to say about a remake but in this case a remake of a remake of an original held my attention from beginning to end even knowing the story forward and backwards.

The cast voices fit perfectly and Billy Echner as Timon the meerkat almost, almost, makes me forget Nathan Lane's voice in the original animation and Seth Rogen gets all the laughs he can as Rumbaa the warthog. It is good to hear James Earl Jones reprise his roll as King Mufasa while the new voices of Chitwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Donald Glover as grown-up Simba and Beyonce Knowles as Nala are equal to the best. By the way the cubs playing Simba and Nala will make anyone a cat person!

The direction, (how do you direct a live/CGI animal?) by Jon Favreau, the photography by Caleb Deschanel with the visual effects by Robert Legato and Adam Valdez all combine to make this version of "The Lion King" a clear winner!

Yes, it's way too similar to the animated movie but if the Mulan trailer told me anything is that, to please the biggest amount of people, you need to be extremely faithful, especially adaptations of beloved movies like Beauty and the Beast and... The Lion King. I thought they did an incredible job with the casting, Chiwetel Ejiofor did a different interpretation of Scar and I thought it was brilliant, the visuals are jaw-dropping and the technology used here is definitely a game-changer in this industry, It'll easily win an Oscar for its CGI. I thought they did a good job with the musical numbers, although I really didn't like how comitted they were to make a movie about talking and singing animals in a Hamlet play extremely realistic. It could use some ol' Disney magic, you know? But fine, for what they were trying to achieve, they did it succesfully. It didn't bother me how the animals were facially expressing, firstly because my memory is not short so I remember watching movies like Babe and The Jungle Book, which it's literally directed by the same guy and used the same idea in the animals' design. The voice actors did an amazing job in bringing these characters to life and they have enough personality to make them relatable. If this is possible to happen with ScarJo's role as an operating system in Her, it's definitely not hard to happen with realistic animals. Soundtrack and score are incredible, you can do no wrong with the original songs and bringing back Elton John to work on new ones was the right call, add that to Beyoncé, who's an amazing artist, and you have pure perfection. As for the writing, honestly, they did exactly what I was expecting which is revisit an iconic story in different format, every little change they made worked for me (Scar, Hyenas, Nala) and Timon and Pumbaa are show-stealers. If you take in consideration it's basically the same script and it doesn't bother you, then I believe you'll enjoy it. The story is fantastic and timeless, there's no way I can say the plot is weak or the dialogue is bad. Overall, I found it very satisfying, I'm planning to watch it again so I can have a more accurate opinion on it. In case you want to know if our taste is similar so you can trust my opinion, I'm gonna rank all Disney live-action remakes post-Alice.

1) The Lion King
2) Alice in Wonderland (I know it's not universally loved but I have a personal attachment to this movie and the book. I may find the script flawed but I'm still enchanted by it. I'm also personally a fan of Tim Burton and his aesthetic.)
3) The Jungle Book
4) Christopher Robin
5) Beauty and the Beast
6) Cinderella
7) Aladdin
8) Dumbo
9) Maleficent
10) Alice Through the Looking Glass (it's technically a sequel, but I think it belongs to this unofficial franchise.)

I haven't seen neither versions of Pete's Dragon yet but I don't think it has something to do with all these remakes being produced.

To be fair I am not sure how I would rate it without the original movie. It could also be a case were I see it as inferior but the things I recognize from the animated movie damping a lower rating. The original was one of the best Disney movies. However they „borrowed“ heavily from Kimba the White Lion from Osamu Tezuka. If you ask how heavily lets say if it were in reverse Disney would have unleashed hell and sued them into oblivion. There is even a reference or side-blow by the Simpsons in one episode. To be fair I must also admit that they used some original themes. The movie is a recreation from the original and very accurate. It is the story of the lion Simba who is the son of the king of lions Mufasa. The kings take care of the pride lands but nothing is as easy as it seems. Mufasa has a brother named Scar who wants to be king instead. It is a coming of age or self discovery story transferred in the animal Kingdom with motives from a Shakespearean play. There is a lot more to the story that I cant spoil but will say the story was always entertaining and a lot of use put this in the favorite Disney movies list. It has a lot of great characters like Timon and Pumbaa who transcended the movie and became the stars of their own show. This is not surprising as they are funny, enjoyable and have a dynamic like only a few duos in Disney movie history. There is of cause Mufasa himself who is a role model for a good and wise king and his brother Scar who is one of the best antagonist in Disney movies. I must also say Simba and Nala are great together. If you like the original you find this very familiar. It is a recreation and quite fateful. What makes it worse is the realism. In the animation they took a lot of effort to transfer the emotions into facial expressions which with the voice actors gave really good results. Here the realism took this away so it is inferior. Also why make this movie when the original is already excellent is an often asked question. I see no benefits except the impressive special effects but like I said those took away a strength. The soundtrack is mixed. I enjoyed the original and they use a lot of great songs like “Hakuna Matata”, “Circle of Life”, “Can you feel the Love tonight” and “Lion sleeps tonight”. It has however not the same impact as back then despite never being bad. Overall this is a remake that was not necessary and can be skipped. The animated movie is the better version. Expand

I was glad to see realistic animals interacting with each other as they played out the familiar story. My wife never saw the original - see really liked this movie as a stand-alone. A few differences: understandably, there wasn't the tower of animals at the end of "I just can't wait to be king". Also, the scene was omitted where the baboon hit grownup Simba on the head and when Simba complained, baboon said, "it doesn't matter - that's in the past" - I liked that teaching moment and wished they had kept it. Also, found Timon the meerkat having an overtly feminine man's voice distracting. Overall very well done and enjoyable! Expand

This review is coming specifically from someone who watched this as an entirely new movie, not a remake of the original. Based on that, I really liked it. The CGI is remarkable, pretty much fooling you into thinking its live action. The story and characters were great, I really felt for Simba and wanted to see him succeed in living up to his fathers name and dethroning his uncle as king. The music numbers were really cool and make you understand the characters better. The movie also had some great action and comedic moments throughout that made it very entertaining. Expand

Quando o Live Action foi anunciado fiquei bem apreenciva. Principalmente quando Jon Favreau foi confirmado como diretor dele, particularmente porque o Live Action de The Jungle Book dele me decepcionou bastante.
Pra falar a verdade o filme me emocionou em diversos o filme me emocionou bastante, meus olhos se encheram de lágrimas na morte de Mufasa, no "banimento" do Simba, em Can You Feel the Love Tonight, no "Remember Who You Are" e no Final.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Lion King gets an A+ from me for sure. The visuals were phenomenally gorgeous, I loved how Simba, Pumbaa, Timon, Nala, Scar, Rafiki, and Zazu looked they were so cool and cute. The soundtrack was outstanding I especially loved the new songs Spirit and Never Too Late, the addition of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and the new versions of Hakuna Matata, Be Prepared, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. The soundtrack is my 3rd favorite soundtrack of 2019, one of my top 5 favorite animated movie soundtracks, one of my top 10 favorite Disney movie soundtracks, one of my favorite albums of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite soundtracks of all time and one of my favorite albums of all time. The score was excellent. The voice over performances were terrific especially from Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Beyoncé, John Oliver, Chiwetel Ejiofor, JD McCrary, John Kani, Florence Kasumba, Keegan-Michael Key, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Eric Andre. I thought that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen were hilarious as Timon and Pumbaa and Keegan-Michael Key and Eric Andre were really funny as Kamari and Azizi. The cinematography was fantastic. This is one of my top 5 favorite Disney movies of 2019, my 3rd favorite animated movie of 2019, one of my top 5 favorite musical movies of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite movies of 2019, one of my favorite Disney movies of all time, one of my top 10 favorite musical movies of all time, one of my favorite animated movies, and one of my favorite movies of all time. The Lion King being my favorite animated Disney movie, I've watched it many times as a kid, as an adult and shared it with my kids.

I'm not sure what people mean when they say it lacks heart? Yes it's the same story, same scenes etc. But it's a remade version, which you can tell Disney was very careful with. When Alice in Wonderland came out, I was hoping and excited for The Lion King. More live action movies released and I know it was only a matter of time.

This movie is fantastic. Not since Avatar have I been blown away by the visuals. Disney did such a good job on the animations, the animals move realistically, they look realistic and if animals could talk, this is how they would look while talking. A lot of people are hating on this movie to be part of the crowd, I give this 5 stars because the story wasn't changed, the CG is seriously mind blowing, the soundtrack was done in justice, it's darker than the animated original and it was pretty action filled.

I feel this movie benefits from its live action. Scar looks more menacing, and you do get emotional and a heart warming sensation when watching because you see how an animal would actually look like when happy or sad. Maybe the negative reviews were from people who don't have any pets?

This is a must watch, and sits next to some of the best movies I've ever seen..
