Someone gets it right when remaking the Disney Classics. No adding weird twists or modern songs or casting the wrong or just horrible actors. This was on point to a T! There was absolutely NOTHING wrong or that I would change in any way. You got all the right songs and voices and didn’t miss or add a scene. I could follow it along like the classic but it was special and fun and exciting because it looked so incredibly real! The animation was phenomenal just amazing. The sounds and acting and songs and everything 100% well done! I wish the others coming out would be like this. Expand

I read other people's reviews before I go to the cinema but I don't make a decision before I see the movie myself and I am really glad that I went to the cinema even when all the negative reviews dropped. I was counting with realistic animalsI read other people's reviews before I go to the cinema but I don't make a decision before I see the movie myself and I am really glad that I went to the cinema even when all the negative reviews dropped. I was counting with realistic animals and that's exactly what I got. People say that thanks to the realistic animations the movie lost it's "magical" atmosphere. But it was an exact opposite for me. Thanks to the realistic animations, the movie felt more, well, realistic and thanks to that more magical. I was often even forgetting it's not a real life movie. So, what about the film itself? Was it actually good? Yes, it was an absolute masterpiece. The animation was incredible and same goes to music. Remade music really did sound incredible and I loved that. When you combine the incredible music with the more incredible story and even more incredible animation, you bet it will make a masterpiece.
I am not here to compare 2019's The Lion King to the original. The movies are very, very different. It mostly depends on each one's movie taste. For me, both movies are great and I'll love them for the rest of my life. So if you want to watch the new The Lion King, don't mind the negative reviews and just go and watch it so you can make your own decision.
Long live the king!

Same songs, same Simba, same sadness. And good! IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT, BABY! One thing with making the animals look so real is that they lose the expression of emotion on their faces, making the dramatic scenes just ever so slightly underwhelming. If the music doesn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up then this film is WASTED on you!
“Professional” critics can kiss my Zazu, it’s a great remake. And with some fresh jokes from Timone and Pumba, it’s an entertaining watch!

Expand

This review is coming specifically from someone who watched this as an entirely new movie, not a remake of the original. Based on that, I really liked it. The CGI is remarkable, pretty much fooling you into thinking its live action. The story and characters were great, I really felt for Simba and wanted to see him succeed in living up to his fathers name and dethroning his uncle as king. The music numbers were really cool and make you understand the characters better. The movie also had some great action and comedic moments throughout that made it very entertaining. Expand

There was so much to ruin, starting from soundtrack and ending with live animation. Fortunately, in my opinion, the film was so great, emotional and fun as the original one. Despite two scenes when it was lacking in key actions and a few dialogues which (of course again in my opinion) could have been improved I have almost nothing to complain about. One thing is for sure when it comes to this kind of movie - animals and expressing emotions is like... they have barely visible facial expressions. BUT everything is okay, you just have to look closer, deep in their eyes. I think it was even more touching and realistic at some point - just like our puppies you can see things through the way they look at you. The sense of humor is a little updated and so is the music. To be honest that was the thing worrying me the most, especially when I heard Beyonce "Spirit" and thought "Wait... where the hell is this supposed to be, even though it's beautiful song. it just doesn't match." But in reality IT REALLY DOES. New arrangements of I just can't wait to be king and Hakuna Matata and The Lion sleept tonight are incredible, all you can do is to try not to smile and sing along. In the end, the movie is well-done and thought from the begging till the end even if it's some kind of remake.

P.s
Mufasa's voice got me goosebumps. So deep and powerful. I'm in love

Remakes like this one are ever-present, yet this one is done to a wonderful degree that allows it to stand out. Regardless of your opinion, it delivers the original with a slight twist which is NEEDED for them to even be considered. Why would the exact same movie with better visuals be of any use. You must expect some change, being harsh merely because you can't handle the evolution is your fault, not the creators'. This movie simply is the Lion King, with fantastic visuals, enhanced audio use and a darker telling of the story while remaining enthralling. I would honestly consider this the definitive version of the movie, with the original remaining fantastic yet dated. Comments that the characters have "lost emotion" is just a spiteful nondescript critique - how is cartoon level emphasis going to be given to photo-realistic characters?

To conclude, an excellent movie receiving unfair criticism. An emotional roller coaster that is sure to satisfy the open minded.

King Mufasa's and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill, the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa shows Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life", which connects all living things. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom it is expected Simba will marry) into exploring a forbidden elephants' graveyard, where they are attacked by hyenas led by the ruthless Shenzi. Mufasa is alerted about the incident by his majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba. Meanwhile, Scar visits the hyenas and manages to convince them to help him overthrow Mufasa in exchange for hunting rights in the Pride Lands.
Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. He informs Mufasa of Simba's peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son. Mufasa saves Simba but ends up hanging perilously from the gorge's edge. Scar refuses to help Mufasa, instead sending him falling to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advises him to leave the kingdom and never return. He orders the hyenas to kill the cub, but Simba escapes. Scar tells the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede and steps forward as the new king, allowing Shenzi's clan to live in the Pride Lands.
Simba collapses in a desert and is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, who are fellow outcasts. Simba grows up in the oasis with his two new friends and other animals in their oasis, living a carefree life under the motto "hakuna matata" ("no worries" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, telling him that the Pride Lands have become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar's reign. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He then encounters Rafiki, who tells him that Mufasa's spirit lives on in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take his rightful place as king. Realizing that he can no longer run from his past, Simba decides to return to the Pride Lands.
Aided by his friends, Simba sneaks past the hyenas at Pride Rock and confronts Scar, who was about to fight Sarabi. Scar taunts Simba over his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to him that he murdered Mufasa. Enraged, Simba attempts to reveal the truth to the rest of the pride, while Scar, who previously claimed that he arrived too late at the gorge, attempts to deny it, but his knowledge of Mufasa's last moment exposes his role in Mufasa's death. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fend off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape, is cornered by Simba at a ledge near the top of Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and attempts to blame his crimes on the hyenas; Simba spares his life but orders him to leave the Pride Lands forever. Scar refuses and attacks his nephew, but Simba manages to throw him off the cliff after a brief fight. Scar survives the fall but is attacked and mauled to death by the hyenas, who overheard his attempt to betray them. Afterward, Simba takes over the kingship and makes Nala his queen.
With the Pride Lands restored to its usual state, Rafiki presents Simba and Nala's newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.

Never seen the original. Was amazed by the Shakespearean story, characterizations, songs and next generation CGI. The craft is nearly at photorealistic level. This is a brilliant movie. Makes me want to watch the cell drawn 90s version.

These pretentious **** crap all over anything that's good and enjoyable and praise absolute trash so they can be "edgy and different". ALL REVIEW SITES SHOULD PUT THE VIEWER RATINGS FIRST AND UPFRONT, that's the real score most of us care about anyways.

the movie wasn't amazing, but if you remember the original from so many years ago then this will stir up all the right kinds of emotions just as the original did. The music, the story and the humor were all there, me and my GF thoroughly enjoyed it. And I don't think it's just nostalgia as there were little kids who seemed to laugh and enjoy the movie too and it must have been their first time watching the lion king.

I was even more impressed seeing the Broadway musical version 3 times including just this past May 9, 2019, in Miami and each time my jaw dropped to the floor with the opening number. Now we have a live action/CGI version. I admit I haven't the slightest idea what that means except the talking animals really seem to move and talk just as human actors do!

I very seldom have good things to say about a remake but in this case a remake of a remake of an original held my attention from beginning to end even knowing the story forward and backwards.

The cast voices fit perfectly and Billy Echner as Timon the meerkat almost, almost, makes me forget Nathan Lane's voice in the original animation and Seth Rogen gets all the laughs he can as Rumbaa the warthog. It is good to hear James Earl Jones reprise his roll as King Mufasa while the new voices of Chitwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Donald Glover as grown-up Simba and Beyonce Knowles as Nala are equal to the best. By the way the cubs playing Simba and Nala will make anyone a cat person!

The direction, (how do you direct a live/CGI animal?) by Jon Favreau, the photography by Caleb Deschanel with the visual effects by Robert Legato and Adam Valdez all combine to make this version of "The Lion King" a clear winner!

While yes, it is a remake to an already perfect movie, it's fun. There's a lot of fun and enjoy to be found in this retelling. It fails to live up to the original, but it's still a good movie in its own right.

Found this computer-generated remake to be an entertaining on the whole with a few caveats.

The movie looks so amazing and photo-realistic. The background in particular is really impressive, I'm surprised this film had only one real setting shot. You really can't tell the difference between this landscape and the real world. Director John Favreau (Iron Man; Jungle Book) has some interesting shots in this. At times, the movie feels like a nature documentary.

Plotwise, this is probably the least ambitious of the recent Disney remakes. Unlike Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, which clung to the plot structure of the originals but also added new elements, this one just retells the basic story. Still, I'm not hating it. This isn't the 90's Psycho. It's not word-by-word. What works for me here is that the jokes are almost all new and they work really well.

Cast is decent. All the funny characters jive. Donald Glover as adult Simba and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar do a good job as the hero and villain. However, Beyonce as adult Nala sometimes really comes across as reading off the page without a whole lot of effort.

The background music really sells the scenes, but admittedly Hans Zimmer basically just rehashes the music from the first film.

This contains all the classic songs from the original. However, "Be Prepared" has been changed to a half-it's-length spoken word song with reworked lyrics. I know at one point the news was that they were cutting this song. (Either for time or Ejiofor just didn't have the pipes.) I'm guessing this was added back due to the backlash but modified to accomodate either or both of the potential issues just mentioned. I actually would've preferred if they left the song out rather than going with this neutered version, which doesn't quite work.

If you feel that the recent Disney remakes are soulless cashgrabs, this really won't be the one to change your mind. Despite coasting with the story, I personally found this to be engaging.

Quando o Live Action foi anunciado fiquei bem apreenciva. Principalmente quando Jon Favreau foi confirmado como diretor dele, particularmente porque o Live Action de The Jungle Book dele me decepcionou bastante.
Pra falar a verdade o filme me emocionou em diversos o filme me emocionou bastante, meus olhos se encheram de lágrimas na morte de Mufasa, no "banimento" do Simba, em Can You Feel the Love Tonight, no "Remember Who You Are" e no Final.

I felt little "lack of humane" expressions and Rest was on voice and actions, and I guess no one disappoints in that regard as far as Lion King is concerned. There may be a hand-full like me, for whom Lion King was the first ever movie-going experience, and frankly we cannot thank Disney enough to bring that back after 26 years. If cinematically put then, had someone been focusing a camera on me.
Apart from that it was a good experience with lot or color and emotion which came back after watching this again. Its must be watched in a theater because I guess then only you get the real essence of it. Its surely atleast one time watch.

Surely not a 100% agreeable of the choices made, like Scar’s voice and ’Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ was totally butchered... and also, there was some useless added content that only slowed down the pace of the film. But I can’t remember another movie that would have anytime recently given such nostalgia chills. This movie does not deserve the underappreciation critiques have given to it. I haven't seen the original, so I can't really compare it. But I do think that people are so focused in comparing it with the originals that they don't look at it like an individual movie. It's like if it doesn't live up to the standard of the original, then it's bad. But I found this film to be quite decent. Maybe I was a bit biased because of the mind-blowing CGI. Even people who hate this movie have to admit the CGI style of the movie was simply astonishing. The fact to detail put here is incredible. Especially the lion's cave and jungle scene, which was one of the most realistic visuals I have ever seen. Add to that some pretty well-done sequences and a thrilling final fight, I think this film is really good. But I'm not saying that it's a perfect film, it's nowhere near it. The pacing for one is a huge issue. It's repeating the same mistake as Frozen 2. Focusing too much on recreating the opening scene. Simba doesn't even run away until an hour into the film. It's building towards an end which is thrilling but the set-up is bad. The story line and the pacing are not good. But still I enjoyed The Lion King for what it was, an astounding piece of art with fun characters and great sequences. Expand

And while as expected, it was visually amazing and detailed, storywise, it was pretty much a near shot-for-shot and dialogue-for-dialogue remake of the original. It all felt a little too rehashed, which isn't quite what I was hoping for. Granted, it did make a handful of minor tweaks and adjustments in spots and moments, but none of them felt quite as fresh or as funny as in the original. One other big pro, however, was the voice cast! Donald 'Childish Gambino' Glover felt like a good choice for adult Simba, while Beyonce voiced Nala perfectly. James Earl Jones (Mufasa) notably is the only original voice actor from the original to return, but hey, no one else can voice that character! Overall, it's visually entertaining, and the voice cast keeps it relatively fun, but it's just the same old story with little to no changes to any original scenes or dialogue, so hopefully that doesn't detract from how much others might enjoy it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thanks Universal. That atrocious Cats trailer automatically gave a bonus point to this movie.
And yes, little Simba is a precious boi...whatever that means. Oh,and Spoilers.

The Lion King 2019! Uhh…you can see it now. In theaters,IMAX and Dolby Cinema. There's really nothing noteworthy about it...Seriously.
Ok,but before we start getting mad about it,let's say a few positives, since it does have some.
The Effects make this movie basically look like a Tech Demo you'd see from E3,from the animals to the landscapes to the tiniest bit of details,to the point to where some of it is shot like a National Geographic documentary. This Art Department is to be blessed for the magic they crafted on screen. Of course you should see it in IMAX. Didn't you get it from the caption? It also shares a spot with Godzilla King Of The Monsters in terms of Artistic Achievements. You make monsters wrecking buildings feel as real as a Da Vinci painting, and NOW you make talking animals feel realistic as ****
Hans Zimmer's score may be the greatest part of this movie. He did understand that it's the remake of a movie he already scored,so he fully embraces the Broadway-style musical numbers and gives it his all with the orchestral compositions, which really were the one thing that kept me smiling (and give me some form of emotion) during the movie, especially with the fan favourite moments (I Was Just Trying To Be Brave Like You,The Stampede etc),which really kick into high gear when 'that' scene is playing. Seriously, there's a part (that we'll also talk about later) that has one of the more swelling moments in the Score. Some of the new content is worthwhile for a laugh or two,but still doesn't really make up for the 2hr Runtime, and the cast is fabulous. Throw in Jeremy Irons and it would've been perfect.
Although it's also one of the main problems.
While the actors portray any form of emotion on-screen,they do feel a bit uncanny, since the CG Animals never embrace any emotion in their faces. Even the Death of Mufasa. While touching (thanks,Zimmer),it kinda feels awkward, since, again,CG Animals with emotionless faces. Another thing that bugged me (don't take it with the other Disney remakes) is that...You know Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary for the Xbox 360,where you can switch between the first Xbox's graphics and the new 360 graphics while playing the game? Yeah? Well, cut the new parts of this new Lion King rendition, couple it with the Animated movie (in an eventual DVD) and you have a version of The Lion King where you can change between animated and live-action (?) with the push of a button. For those who don't get it,it's almost a shot-for-shot remake of the Animated one. No flair of its own,no real value of reason to exist (unlike the last Disney movie that we didn't need)...Just a good ole' safe Disney cash machine.
Ok,so...That swelling sequence. When Simba falls to the ground, sleeping (after a talk with Timon and Pumbaa),there's a droplet of hair (of his) flying away from him,and we follow it just fine (alongside the best musical part of the score),but it just goes on and on after a point. It's that long. Oh,and it makes up for a poop joke. HA HA movie.
I really hated how they began the 3rd Act. No offense to Beyonce's new song "Spirit" ,which sounds lovely and all,but enough with these badass sequences set to a hip song.
Also...Just STOP PUTTING JUMPSCARES IN FRANCHISE MOVIES. Especially when it's "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" playing. PLEASE. JUST STOP. And why is Mufasa portrayed as Superman everything he pops up on screen?
Look. This new version of The Lion King feels like a cash machine, but a disappointing one at that. Even if I say that it's good and/or great (as a 7/10) feels like a disappointment. It was supposed to be the end of a dark tunnel of 2019 Disney remakes, why is it just another fine Disney remake and not a really good one?!? I guess you could say because executives. Those who don't want to risk something really beloved and expand it to new horizons

I don't understand why someone pulls it off? Perfect transfer of old 2D cinema with great voices. For Family Cinema is definitely brilliant.

I connected with the animated version more, but this one was still a visual feast & storytelling dream.

Solid live action of the cartoon, but for some reasln or another I felt it lacked the heart the cartoon did. Still worth going to go see, but you might be dissappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So my biggest problem is that there wasn’t hardly any facial expressions. I also feel like some of the crucial parts were missing. For example, when rufiki is fighting the hyenas when pride rock was being taken back, rufiki was in the middle in the animated film but in this current film it he didn’t. I felt like that was a crucial. Other then that I feel like it hit nearly every point it needed to. Expand

If you want something more you will not get that. I don’t get the criticism under that because we all know if the added anything else at all everyone will get very mad. But that also makes me think why was this even made? Expand

I really enjoyed the visuals of the film. Loved that they retained the much adored original songs. It's pretty much a retelling of the original animated film with enhanced graphics but I still really enjoyed it.
