This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A completely unique film in 2019. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio, black and white, starring 2 guys in a lighthouse going mad - thanks A24. As someone said to me, it's like a lucid dream turned nightmare. It's a harrowing movie of two lighthouse keepers going mad, not sure if Willem is gaslighting Robert, or if Robert is on a perpetual bender distorting his reality. It doesn't matter, it's an intense memorable movie that was a brave move to take.… Expand

This movies is not for everyone. If you expect to see an action flick, skip this. I just could not let it go, and weeks later I still think about it.
The use of black/white pictures in 4/3 format, have never been so hauntingly strong.

I still cannot believe they won't give Willem Dafoe an Oscar for his performance. This is a very good movie and a scary and uncomfortable experience in the cinema. The sound and imagery are painful to follow.

Brilliant cinematography and set design. Authentic and period-immersive performances. But I left feeling empty and a little meh towards the characters. It seemed that once everything was established, the characters only finished the dark path they each had started on, and any further expansion of the story stopped. I still recommend this film. It can be interpreted in many different ways. What exactly happened? I think I have a idea of what actually happened. But I'm not sure. I was hoping for a different ending. Sometimes it's better to make you imagine what a character is seeing rather than showing you. It's effective at that. But what was real and what wasn't? Two men going crazy in a lighthouse. Were they going crazy or was everything actually happening?… Expand

With amazing performances from the film's two casts, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, The Lighthouse dives deep into the dark, violent, and gory psyche of the human mind. The cinematography was also amazing, and so was the lighting. The plot however, often is quite confusing, especially in following the timeline of how long the characters were in the lighthouse. But overall, the story was amazingly brutal and dark. Definitely not for everyone.… Expand

Director Robert Eggers uses a simple premise to create an engrossing and memorable viewing experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I liked aspects of his previous film, "The Witch," but I found the third act underwhelming. "The Lighthouse" is a vast improvement - and a great example of how to get a horror movie right. Willem Dafoe, who's always good, does an amazing job. Having been familiar with Robert Pattinson only from his unremarkable turn as Edward Cullen, I was pleasantly surprised by his intense but complicated performance. The music, sound design, and visuals of "The Lighthouse" are captivating. However I found a few scenes poorly lit, and Willem Dafoe's dialogue is difficult to understand due to the thickness of his sailor dialect. But despite a few problems here and there, "The Lighthouse" is a powerful tale of insanity and isolation. 8/10.… Expand

Wow, what a masterpiece! Starting with the visuals, The Lighthouse is absolutely gorgeous to look at. The imagery feels instantly iconic, and the almost-square aspect ratio helps set the time period as well as add claustrophobia to the mix.Wow, what a masterpiece! Dafoe and Pattinson are riveting in their roles, giving career-best performances. There is an interesting ebb and flow to their relationship in the movie as if discussing, can men — or at least heterosexual men — truly be intimate with each other? As the men become more intimate during their time cloistered on this island, they push each other away, perhaps by sheer masculinity, only to revisit a need for human connection yet again.

There are also themes of power and the desire for it, or at least to be respected as an equal. And as one might expect in a film about spending weeks on an island, sanity also comes into question.

The few occasions during the moving in which my immersion broke were only because I found myself considering what must have been a truly brutal and demanding filming process.… Expand

I thought The VVitch was good; this is even better, with wonderful cinematography and performances. The black and white visuals and odd aspect ratio are more than just a gimmick, they really help to frame and intensify the visuals.

Their relationship becomes ever more twisted and dark, as their isolated existence bears down on their souls. Both actors get plenty of opportunity for excess (especially Dafoe) with grand statements and sometimes confusing period dialogue. The square aspect ratio and dramatic black and white cinematography add to the artistic look, while the ominous soundtrack continually invades the action with a heavy hand. As things become more bizarre, it reminded me of the detached weirdness of David Lynch's "Eraserhead." Some will find this film's peculiar, creepy vibe mesmerizing, while others will think it's a pretentious, over the top exercise in self indulgence. I'm in the middle… appreciated it more than loved it.… Expand

Not only is The Lighthouse a masterpiece, it’s my favorite film of the year so far, the most terrifying film I have ever seen, one of the best films of the decade, and possibly one of my favorite films of all time. This is one of those fewNot only is The Lighthouse a masterpiece, it’s my favorite film of the year so far, the most terrifying film I have ever seen, one of the best films of the decade, and possibly one of my favorite films of all time. This is one of those few times where I feel a film has no flaws at all. Most of this movie”s greatness comes from the performances of Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, especially Dafoe. What these two do in their respective roles is crazy and awesome. Watching them go through this slow descent into madness is awesome, mesmerizing, and terrifying to watch but Willem Dafoe absolutely steals the show. At certain points in the film, Dafoe goes on a 2 minute tirad about something and it’s one steady, uncut shot of him and it’s incredibly intense and terrifying. Dafoe was 100 percent born for this role. He fits so perfectly into it and this is probably a career best performance from him so far. This is also a career best for Robert Pattinson as well. Although his performance isn’t as fantastic as Dafoe’s, he still does an outstanding job. I want Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, and Robert Pattinson to get nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars but Willem Dafoe deserves to win the award. The script is phenomenal. Each line of dialogue is well written and clever and any jokes the film makes fit well. The Lighthouse has in my opinion the best cinematography of the year. Every single shot of the film is unique and memorable and there are tons of beautiful shots. There are a lot of one shot takes with the characters talking or working on something which are the best shots in the film for the most part. The aspect ratio for the film is much smaller than the standard aspect ratio. This aspect ratio change and camerawork mixes together a claustrophobic atmosphere which is perfect for what The Lighthouse is going for. I felt that these characters genuinely had no escape from this place because of these filmmaking techniques. The production design of the actual Lighthouse is fantastic. The sets look beautiful even in black and white. Anything the film does with sound is breathtaking. The sound design for the foghorn that plays throughout the film and certain elements of the film I can’t spoil all sounds awesome. The score by Mark Korven is so far, my favorite score of the year. Every single piece fits perfectly into its respective scene. Each piece is so unique and different from the one before and each is memorable in their own way. My favorite piece would be the first track titled Arrival. The Lighthouse’s major themes that I caught are isolation and insanity. While themes like that are common in film, the way The Lighthouse uses these themes makes it so unique. Watching these two men go insane on this island is mesmerizing thanks to Robert Eggers incredibly direction. Overall, The Lighthouse is a fantastic take on isolation with career bests from Pattinson and Dafoe along with outstanding cinematography, an intelligent script, and a jaw dropping story, and an intense musical score.… Expand

The cinematography and sound in particular stand out. However, many of us agreed that the actors seemed more like they were acting than actually living their roles. This may be partially due to the somewhat outrageous and extreme lines and roles they had to play, somewhat over the top. Despite the story mostly being portrayed in the first person, you don't really think you get to know anyone. The film clearly aims to be a psychological drama in the vein of Bergman, but keeps getting undercut by the extreme CG flashbacks that signal more intent on horror than psychology. Once again, the film really is ambitious and involving as it plays. I kept wondering all through the film if it will find an large audience. But it fails my "next day" test; I was not left with anything to ponder afterwards, and pretty much forgot the details the next day. So, congrats on a serious effort, particularly in these days of boring and unchallenging movies. Pity it does not really grab me in any way.… Expand

I understand how many people wont like this movie at all. I really loved the way this was filmed. Direction and photography were tied up so magically. The sound design was superb. and what an outstanding interpretation of both Defoe and Pattison. To be honest i didnt thought Pattison could get so high and impresive on his character. im so relieved to see how far he is from Twilight and so well developed nowadays.… Expand

Things start getting freaky as sanity starts to wane and what is real or not comes into question. I found this to be rather a fascinating film and the best looking horror movie of the year.

This movie is so visually striking. It is very reminiscent of how old movies were shot. The film is in black and white and the contrast between white and dark really adds to the stark feel of the whole thing. There are a lot of controlled shots that really direct the mood. The camera lingering on a wide shot helps show the bleakness of the island or a specific focus on something out of place or unsettling add to the madness and sense of despair.

The imagery is just fantastic. A lot of the freaky stuff that goes on is quick and to the point in a manner almost like a picture in a book giving The Lighthouse an unreal feel. There are some very unique parts and there is stuff in here you won't soon forget.

The psychological drama and the script are well done, too. There are some really good moments of dialogue and even an odd funny line that'll catch you by surprise. But I admit that the script is not at the same level as the visuals. Some of the many scenes of tension or squabbling between the two main characters could've been cut down a little.

Understand that this is a slow movie. The characters speak in the manner of the times and you have to make sure you're paying attention so you can figure out what they're saying.

Defoe unsurprisingly does a great job, but in my opinion it is Pattinson who makes the film. He can say so much with just a facial expression and he is so good at handling quick changes of tone.

Overall this movie may be too slow a burn for some, but if you're the slightest bit interested, I highly suggest this. This is a movie that will really stick with you.… Expand

This is the second movie by Robert Eggers, the first being The Witch, an excellent movie. This one also was pretty good, i think he is inspired by Bergman. The Lighthouse is definitely an experience but it will depend on each viewer's criteria to know what kind of experience they will have from it.
Sounds pretentious? Maybe a little but a film like this causes a lot of divided reactions.

I mention this because I've heard that many people have labeled it boring and non-entertaining but for people like me who enjoy this type of movies it's undeniably entertaining to enjoy it. So how can you dissect a story like that?

There are many variants but what I saw and experienced with this film left me pleasantly happy.
I accept that the film itself doesn't have a memorable story. The mystery feels somewhat naive but it's still a captivating mystery, however it's the sum of all its elements that make this an amazing, claustrophobic, imposing, and fascinating feat.
The performances, the atmosphere, the tone, the music, the ambience, the direction and the development stand out entirely.
The Lighthouse it's simply an amazing film.

This is the kind of film that makes you fall in love with cinema and therefore is so polarizing. I enjoyed it, so **** it if someone else didn't.… Expand

Eggers strikes again! For anyone that has qualms with the bizarre plot, it is helpful to note, that just like his 'The Witch' (which didn't go over too well with the more gore and jump scare oriented horror fan crowd either). This is based onEggers strikes again! For anyone that has qualms with the bizarre plot, it is helpful to note, that just like his 'The Witch' (which didn't go over too well with the more gore and jump scare oriented horror fan crowd either). This is based on real lore, that other films have been made upon. Such as 2018s 'The Vanishing'. It's not an original off the wall concoction. What Eggers does here is merely creates his OWN explanation, that isn't so much concerned with scary your pants off as it is with making you think, about things like duality, and the behavior of the human male in duress, as we might feel while watching Jack Torrence tear through a door in the Shining. You're getting grade A black and white cinematography, with two clear cut pro actors in a chillingly real gloom trap, trying to cut the mustard. The authenticity is top notch. Any more so and one might get the taste of sea water in one's mouth. If you're looking for a scare with an explanation that will let ya sleep at night with the film nestled away in your mind, it might not be for you. If you want a film with story so perplexing, to match the true stories and theories that it represents, keeping you thinking thinking thinking for days, with the urge to learn more - this is for you. Willem hardly fails and this is no exception. Pattinson is ever evolving into a more versatile actor and this is indeed more proof, as if we already couldn't tell with Claire Denis' recent sci-fi slo-burner 'High Life' and the Safdie Bros hypermaxed out in style/heartwarmer & heartbreaker 'Good Time'. 8/10 and kudos to another fine trip by Eggers.… Expand

Slow, atmospheric, creepy, funny, disorienting, are all perfectly apt descriptions. Chiaroscuro, the fancy schmancy term for balancing black and white in visuals, is actually in effect for this black and white movie, thank the cinema lords. Technically this film is a masterpiece and the acting is mind bogglingly fun, and thankfully it's shy of 2 hours long so it doesn't get tedious. I wouldn't recommend for most people though.… Expand

As a follow up to his debut feature, The Witch, The Lighthouse is very different in most ways. It's still a very slow burn and it is based around a singular location. But there is no witchcraft or ghosts. This isn't about a haunted lighthouse, this is about two guys who go crazy in a lighthouse. And it's never really clear which parts of the story are based in reality and which are hallucinations. It's open for each audience member to come away with their own conclusion of the story. So if you're looking for a film that ties everything up all nice with a bow, The Lighthouse isn't for you. There is also a dash of crude humor in this film that really, really works. The jokes never feel out of place and I actually laughed out loud a few times. As for the cinematography, the lenses that Eggers used (which I believe were from the 1920s) really helped him make this look like a film that was legitimately made in the early 1900s. Some people may get turned off by the old-timey, black and white look. But it really makes for a more enthralling viewing experience. The framing on the scenes that focused solely on Dafoe or Pattinson as they were nonsensically yelling about something were incredible. Finally, Robert Pattinson gives the best performance of his career and Willem Dafoe gives one of his best performances of his career. I think both of them should be serious contenders at the Oscars. And, honestly, Dafoe should win best supporting actor. Apart from a mermaid who is briefly in the film, these two were the ONLY actors in the film. They carried it all on their own, and it's one of the best (if not the best) film of the year.… Expand

A manic fever dream fusing Greek mythology, Jungian psychology, and German Expressionism with Herman Melville and H.P. Lovecraft, The Lighthouse is the second film from writer/director Robert Eggers, who made The VVitch: A New England Folktale (2015). Co-written by Max Eggers, the film is very loosely based on the "Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy" (1801). A bizarre experience in just about every way, from the glorious visual and aural design to the grandiose acting to the jet black humour to the ambiguity, the film fits into a horror subgenre that focuses on cerebral, difficult-to-define, and always slightly off-camera terror (see films such as The VVitch, The Blair Witch Project, The Babadook, and The Wind). And I loved every crazy minute of it. In the late 1890s, Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) arrive on an outcropping off the coast of New England to begin their four-week rotation manning the lighthouse. The more experienced Wake assigns Winslow menial tasks, whilst he himself attends to the lens. Although Winslow has some unnerving dreams, the four weeks pass without incident. However, on the night before their relief is due, the wind suddenly changes, and the island is hit by a violent storm, stranding the duo indefinitely.

The importance of Damian Volpe's incredible sound design is indicated immediately, as before we see anything, we hear the wind blowing and a foghorn rumbling in the distance. That horn is omnipresent throughout the film, and to say it gets under your skin is an understatement. It's unsettling and disturbing, and it makes it impossible to ever acclimate yourself to this strange milieu. There's only one sequence in which we don't hear it; the pivotal opening scene of the third act, and the silence is oppressive.

The sound design is matched by the stunning monochrome visuals. Working with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, Eggers shot The Lighthouse in 1.19:1, a transitional format that was only used briefly during the shift from silent cinema to sound. And that's exactly why Eggers and Blaschke chose it. This is a folktale, a fable from a by-gone age, so what better way to present that fable than by replicating the way the film would have looked had it been made during the early years of sound filmmaking, creating the sense that this is a disturbing artefact, an antique vestige from a different era.

One also has to praise Craig Lathrop's production design. The lighthouse used in the film wasn't an existing structure, but was custom-built to scale on Cape Forchu, an outcropping off the coast of Nova Scotia. Lathrop has imbued every inch of the building, both inside and out, with an existentialist dread – from the industrial hell of the gears in the basement to the almost Eden like peace of the lantern room high above.

Eggers also does something interesting with the narrative itself. Winslow and Wake are focalisers – the world is filtered through their perspective, but they don't narrate. Indeed, although we shift from one character to the other, Eggers never leaves their perspective, nor does he present any kind of omniscient narration. Important here is the use of "fallible focalisation"; the story is one of madness, and it's abundantly clear that neither man is a reliable witness. As things begin to fall apart, this sense becomes ever more prevalent, as we begin to question much of what we're seeing. It's a wonderful use of a defamiliarising technique which works to keep the audience constantly on edge and constantly second-guessing everything they see insofar as we know that some, none, or all of it could be the figment of a failing mind.

The film's storyline is slight enough as to suggest several themes without really going too heavily into any of them. For example, one could certainly read Winslow and Wake's relationship as homoerotic, whilst the societal construct of masculinity, particularly as manifested in competitiveness, is never far from the surface. Another reading would be that the film is an allegory for class struggle – the lantern room high above is the upper class, the bowels of the lighthouse is the working class. Alcoholism is also omnipresent, with the duo progressively drinking more and more each night, until they run out of rum, and so try to mix turpentine and honey, so dependent have they become on the numbing effects of drink.

The Lighthouse definitely isn't for everyone, and is challenging and rewarding in equal measure. There's a lot that has gone into making this film what it is, both in terms of crafting the folkloric story and in the more mechanical sense of putting the finished film together. An aesthetic marvel, it's thick with mood and atmosphere, and proves that The VVitch was no fluke.… Expand

The aspect ratio is to add the feeling of loneliness and claustrophobia this movie wants to make the viewer feel and the black and white look isn't made because it looks cool but also, not only to make us feel that we are transported to sometime in the past but also makes some great contrasts that make this movie almost feel like in complete darkness. The performances...Oh my God, this might be one of the best acted movies of 2019. The Green Goblin is great like in pretty much every role he takes. Thanks to the lighting and his jawdropping facial expressions he looked genuinely terrifying during the famous monologue scene. Edward Cullen is the proof that (almost)any actor can be amazing if he's with the right director and I bought every action he made and every word he said. This movie is filled with so much creativity and while the story itself can be predictable because of the circumstances surrounding the characters there's so much to think about. All the metaphors, the allegories, every element is there for a reason and it's up to the viewer to think. This is what makes or breaks this movie because you love it or hate it. This might be a weird movie for some (specially the masses who want more straight-forward, surface-level stories) but for me, it's a fantastic movie in which we learn a lot about the characters and all those plot elements that might feel confusing are done to add to the feeling of mystery surrounding the characters and the setting. I feel that this movie is also a clever commentary about superstition and how we don't really know what's actually real or what not. This is a brilliant movie in every single aspect and even if you don't get the story or the point of the movie (I think I did) you have to live this experience. It is NECESSARY to watch it in a theater or at home but with a good sound system and a big screen.… Expand

It is made to look and feel like a classic horror film, it’s shot in black and white with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It feels very intense and claustrophobic, and the edges of the screen sometimes blend in with the black space so you can focus on the centre of the frame. The performances are unreal. Robert Pattinson is fantastic and Willem Dafoe is absolutely unbelievable! You know the Sea Captain from The Simpsons? That’s basically him in this movie. So awesome! The story is slow, vague and doesn’t make much sense. It leaves a lot to the imagination and your own personal interpretation. Is all this crazy horrific stuff really going on, or are the characters just going insane? It really sucks you in and makes you think. This, along with Midsommar, are my favourite movies of the year. This is a must-see! Turn all the lights off and get lost in this beautiful, haunting film. I gotta tell you, if that Blumhouse Universal Monsters reboot doesn’t do well, they NEED to give the rights to A24! Seeing some of the most classic horror characters reimagined by the most brilliant modern horror directors would be freaking awesome!! Make it happen, Universal!… Expand

Set on a remote lighthouse island (obviously), the plot revolves around a young man (Robert Pattinson) trying to keep his sanity whilst working a four week shift with his extremely unlikeable superior (Willem Dafoe). If you know me well at all you’ll know that I am particularly fond of the psychedelic drama ‘Donnie Darko’ due to its weird and at times disturbing nature, but Donnie Darko doesn’t even come close to being as strange and twisted as this film. As soon as the lighthouse begins the insanely heavy focus on sound design comes in to play and we hear a loud and quite uncomfortable noise, which after being played countless times, gradually blends into the atmosphere. For this reason (amongst others) I think it is worth mentioning that the lighthouse is a very cinematic experience and should be treated as such. I have little doubt that once the film leaves cinemas it will never be experienced in the same way again, so I absolutely recommend that you go out and watch it soon. The sound emitted from the speakers is often so intense that you’ll feel the entire room vibrating, which isn’t helped by Mark Korven’s discomforting score which perfectly accompanies the feeling of suspense present throughout the movie. With all of this chaos surrounding the two central characters, it becomes apparent that the performances of the protagonists will either make or break the experience on the whole. Fortunately both Pattinson and Dafoe are phenomenal, giving outstanding performances that to my knowledge are the greatest of either actor’s career. Where Pattinson does an outstanding job of portraying a realistic and unsettling descent into madness, Dafoe gives a terrifying impersonation of a cruel, superstitious man who has lived away from society for a large portion of his life. I finally understand the large number of individuals who claim that they were both robbed of Oscar nominations. Which brings me to my final topic, the screenplay and the plot in general.
Each scene has a specific dynamic which is intended to allow a contrast between the moments in which Pattinson is alone, and when he is spending time with Dafoe. In the instances where the young man is in solitude, Eggers allows the tension to build up with the atmosphere at its peak, however when both him and Dafoe are together most of this is gone in order to allow the two fantastic actors to improvise and show off the extent of their brilliance. This format remains apparent, until the final act of the film in which a shocking and sinister finale combines both of the former elements. By the time it was over, I was completely speechless about the phenomenon I had just witnessed, and remained so for hours to come. The lighthouse is a masterpiece however you look at it, but it also shouldn’t be taken lightly. It is certainly not for the faint of heart, as together with its disturbing atmosphere and the amazing performances of each member of the cast, it is uncomfortable and twisted film that in my opinion definitely would’ve deserved a best picture nomination.… Expand

This movie is no exception. From the very beginning you feel sympathy for the protagonists as they develop and change throughout the movie. Excellent writing.

The acting is Oscar worthy both from Dafoe and Pattinson. Absolutely top notch! There are times when you can't decide which one of the characters they played you care for or hate, the screenplay and the on screen happenings kept me on the edge of my seat.

You can feel something sinister pulling the strings, but you can't figure out what it is. Is it an evil spirit? Is it their minds that are playing games with them? Is it solitude? The combination all of those? Who is the bad guy? Who is the good guy? Questions like these you find yourself asking during the movie.

The editing and camerawork are fantastic also. During shots you can almost feel that you're there, the black and white experience adds to the mood that screams hopelessness and desperation.

I will surely watch this movie again.… Expand

There is one major flaw in this movie, and it was a big one for me. Robert Pattison's accent shifts and fades throughout the movie. It took me out of many scenes. It starts out basic enough. Two lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) are stranded on an island together some time in the 1800s during a storm and are in guard of the lighthouse there. Soon enough, mistrust, hallucinations, madness, and drunken antics ensue between the two men. There were a lot of things I highly admired about this film. For starters, it was given a period-appropriate feel, as it employed the use of a boxy 1.19:1 aspect ratio and was filmed in black and white. Furthermore, this helped the mood and atmosphere feel all the more tense and mysterious. Dafoe and Pattinson only add further to this by keeping us guessing with their mysterious and intriguing, sometimes even humorous performances (Dafoe in particular was a hoot to watch as he hams it up playing a salty seaman.) Storywise, it's a little scattershot at times, but it mostly works on this film due to its mysterious nature, which allows for several crazy scenes and hallucinations to occur throughout the film, along with quite an ending that's going to keep me pondering what I witnessed for quite some time. Overall, this is a pretty stellar and well-acted film with several interesting elements and great cinematography that all add up to a one-of-a-kind viewing experience (and undoubtedly a vast improvement over director Robert Eggers' godawful overrated 'The Witch'.)… Expand

Time to spill the beans…’The Lighthouse’ is a masterpiece! I loved loved loved loved it! I loved every minute of it. One of my favorite movies of 2019 and I honestly don’t think anything can top it. A slow descent into madness that creeps into your subconscious and won’t be leaving anytime soon.

From the very first frame, I immediately knew this was going to be special. I was hooked throughout until the end credits.

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson both deliver career defining performances. They play off each others insanity beautifully. I could tell just from the accents and dialect that plenty of homework went into making an authentic portrayal of the time.

Robert Pattinson is fantastic as a quiet and private lighthouse keeper that witness the madness slowly unfolding, but also feeds the audiences curiosity on revealing the strange happenings on the island. Pattinson is a chameleon when it comes to portraying characters.

Willem Dafoe, on the other hand, was mesmerizing as the old sea dog captain with a love for farting. His long and insane monologues are the main highlights, because it was so electrifying to watch it was hard not be captivated. He’s strict and often unpredictable, but once you see it, you won’t forget it.

I hope Robert Eggers continues making horror movies in the future, because right now he’s one of the best living directors working today. The slow-burn tension and lack of conventional scares seems to be his trademark so far. Every choice he made was so carefully thought out and the results is masterful. According to Eggers, they actually built a lighthouse from scratch and everything we see, including the weather, is genuine. Even if some tricky was used, it was so seamless I couldn’t tell what was fake.

I loved how the movie was shot; the dim black-and-white with the claustrophobic aspect ratio, giving it the appearance of a silent film born like a German expressionism - something you would’ve mistaken for a 1920/30’s horror folklore. Perfectly captures the time period and the overall dread. You really do feel cut off from the outside world and abandoned on this spectral-like island, and this black sheet of cloud strongly looming over the two men. A dark force in all directions, unseen but very eerie. The cold and heartless weather is a character itself. A big bully with salty intentions.

I adored the use of lighting through out, as the only light source is either natural light during daytime or candle lit lanterns, which cast many shadows that adds to the unease. There’s some gorgeous looking cinematography on display here. Seriously, even as am writing this right now I can memorize every single frame of this strange nightmare of a film. Absolutely breathtaking.

While the movie is mainly horror, but there is comedy sprinkled throughout that was actually pretty hilarious. Everything from Dafoe farting and some creative insults the characters would often spit at each other, which would later expand into long monologues that I sat back and watch in awe with a stupid grin on my face, because how something so silly can be so poetic. Never have I seen a movie that perfectly balances more than one genre so fluently. You can laugh at the moments where it’s suppose to be funny, but also take it seriously whenever it’s suppose to be taken seriously, which is sometimes all in one scene. The writing from Eggers is so excellent.

After only one viewing there was a lot I could easily dissect in terms of interpretation. There's masculinity and Greek mythology imagery that demonstrates a striking sense of power. There’s also a certain idea of sexuality being a sacred thing and the frustration it may bring. Or maybe it’s just a simple story about two guys on a rock getting drunk and then getting even drunker while holding each other until they drift off to sleep.

Overall rating: One of the best looking horror comedies of 2019.… Expand

The Lighthouse is one of the craziest films I have ever seen. It absolutely nails psychological horror, and it sets the tone par excellance. Eggers offers a sense of vulnerability. That is his gift. Now let's look at the premise itself. No matter how beautifully and brilliantly will it be wrapped. It certainly would leave you depressed at the end of the day. Yet, I am happy with the final result. Of course, not talking about the themes and the plot and the genre it explores. But the filmmaking. The co-writer and director Robert Eggers's subjective method is enchanting. You are lured into the procedure. The writing. Often Shakespeare and often Dickens is seen or heard or subtexted. There is a morality clause threatening the wrong doers in the film that is impeccably heartbreaking. And I say heartbreaking, for it is not exactly denying any boundaries.

And if, forgetting all the conditional circumstances that these duo is surrounded with, it is and they could be pushed over the immoral section. The script is written in the opposite direction. In the sense that it motivates you to root for them to get on the wrong track. This is wrong and core of this art form. Now, you as an audience are struggling. The claustrophobic, the lunatic experience feels like a justice. You are told to ask for those moments.

And earns those moments are our characters. The master and the slave. The prolific and the dead. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson shares, or more honestly snatches, this characteristic from real life, as mentioned, from their career as well as in the character. And for this almost perfect casting which should and does boost the plot, there is a sound and clear "thank you" echoed in your emotion as they dance extravagantly in the terrifying black and white shades. The Lighthouse is a collection of various artists collaborating for something purely evil. The "pure" part I like, I envy.… Expand

"Oscura, lúgubre, un descenso retorcido hacia la verdadera locura altamente siniestro y perturbador"

Esta película me hizo flipar en todos los sentidos, fue una experiencia hipnótica, envolvente y pesadillesca, al menos para mí, siendo una película no convencional y una auténtica obra de horror moderno cargado de alta tensión psicológica, logró sin quererlo aterrorizarme y elevar discretamente mis niveles de ansiedad, pero lejos de ser un mal viaje, fue real, hermoso y enriquecedor; más me vale ver algo divertido antes de dormir o tendré problemas, ademas, el cuadro final fue quizás un poco Too Much para mi. Sería criminal de mi parte recomendar esta película a personas que sufren de ansiedad, lo digo por experiencia propia, pero si la recomiendo encarecidamente a los amantes del séptimo arte que gusten de experiencias nuevas.

Esto como dije antes, es horror moderno, nada de payasadas cuya única herramienta para asustar son los jumpscares.

Robert Pattinson lo hace de maravilla, aunque no pude evitar pasarme el rollo con el. Willem Dafoe lo hizo aún mejor actuando y en ocasiones opaca al propio protagonista.

Evoking such seafaring literary classics by Herman Mehlville (Moby Dick) and Ernest Hemingway (Old Man and the Sea) as the film opens with an almost square aspect ratio (1.19:1) harkening back to early cinema. The effect is at once claustrophobic and mysteriously out of place.

In a traditional narrative fashion, the characters are introduced and established. Winslow, a strapping, mysterious, young man of few words and who appears to have a troubled past claiming a work history as a Canadian lumberjack is the hired help (wickie) under contract for four weeks with hopes of moving up the ladder and someday hoping to become a lighthouse operator like his housemate Wake, a salty, crusty archetypal seaman. Wake comes across as an experienced sea hand with knowledge of sailor life and mythology who has the inexplicable behavior of farting loudly much to Winlow's chagrin. Moreover, Wake treats Winslow harshly despite Winlsow's unswerving dedication to carrying out the chores, emptying chamber pots and swabbing the floor repeatedly to Wake's unending condemnation.

The two work together, sleep together and eat together. Winslow refrains from alcohol until a storm begins pounding the lighthouse. Together the two imbibe, dance, sing and became Marry. Soon, however, a darkness creeps in and the two men vie for control of the lighthouse. Also, Wake refuses Winslow access to the lantern room atop the lighthouse. Intrigued a jealous Winslow begins spying on Wake's ritualistic time in front of the massive light bulb and becomes infatuated with Wake's unearthly obsession. The two lighthouse keepers engage in an escalating battle of wills in a tension-fed, trapped scenario with mysterious forces, real or imagined, looming while a seemingly never-ending storm rages outside, leaving the men stranded.

Eggers uses several crew members from The Witch including cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, production designer Craig Lathrop, costume designer Linda Muir, composer Mark Korven, and editor, Louise Ford, to transport the audience into a realm of terrifying unknown. The cinematography is nothing short of spectacular as the lighting and framing create a sense of the paranormal. And, the production design along with the costuming transports the viewer, via the suspension of disbelief, into the time of the 1890s capturing the harshness of the film's setting. Furthermore, Pattinson and DaFoe play off of each other very well. But, in my opinion, the attention to detail with the sound design including foghorn, seagulls, waves, machinery, and furnace, lend strong credence to the film's reality.

The stormy night is when the film goes into warp drive and provides a catalyst for all the odd and unusual behavior to come alive and take over the film's consciousness. Eggers's use of black and white allows for the utmost effect in facial lines and scene shadowing. These scenes have a supernatural, expressionistic appearance as the film delves into insanity. What emerges is a tragic Greek myth (it begins with a capital P). Highly recommended!… Expand

I went into this not knowing much about it, but suspected it would be decent based on what I've heard from people whose opinions I admire. Aesthetically it's stunning, some of the visuals alone are iconic and breathtaking, the acting is elevated to the highest highs. Both Defoe and Pattinson give chilling performances. The story - oh boy. The best I could say is the lest you know the better. But go in with an open mind, because this will be weird, uneasy, at times uncomfortable, unnerving, and in brief moments even funny.… Expand

The best thing about this movie is Willem Dafoe, who gives a career-defining performance. Dafoe plays Thomas Wake, a picturesque light housekeeper. Dafoe’s salty intonations and frenzied mannerisms go a long way to sell his character, but even more than this is his dedication to his role. He is always in character, his presence ever-looming, even while being buried alive. If charted, the movie’s power dynamics would make the most erratic of double helixes with the dominant role constantly swapping between Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Pattinson, as the central character of the movie, also gives an outstanding performance. He is in a way more defined but is also ousted as an unreliable narrator. For the movie’s beginning, Pattinson is given credence and focus so that the audience gives him the benefit of the doubt. As the movie grows more sinister though it becomes clear that neither the presentation nor the dialogue is playing fair. This movie has so much meaning behind it that needs to be digested and analyzed. The Lighthouse is an ominous piece that drops the viewer off with its characters and leaves them washed ashore trying to play catch up. Despite the accents obscuring parts of the dialogue, and the looming sirens (auditory and fish lady) constantly encroaching, a deep appreciation for Robert Eggers must be developed. Every aspect of The Lighthouse works. Not a moment of filmmaking is dull, unwarranted, and not one but of these actors' talents were put to waste. Moreover, The Lighthouse is far, far greater than the some of its parts. In essence, TheEvery aspect of The Lighthouse works. Not a moment of filmmaking is dull, unwarranted, and not one but of these actors' talents were put to waste. Moreover, The Lighthouse is far, far greater than the some of its parts. In essence, The Lighthouse is to the 2010's what "There Will Be Blood" was to the 2000's - unabashedly over-the-top, larger than life, often-times ham-fisted and downright corny, but utterly compelling, and more than sophisticated enough to justify its bizarre conceits. Words cannot do justice to this film's sense of atmosphere. It gets compared to SpongeBob Squarepants of all things, and the comparison is not unwarranted. The Lighthouse is in many ways an adult fever-dream episode of SpongeBob, with its twisted, absurd sense of comedic timing, weirdly-authentically nautical atmosphere, and a willingness to entertain the weird, scary, and abhorrent for the sake of memorability. It's campiness works because this story clearly doesn't take itself seriously, taking as much time to chide and mock its characters and their questionable motives. Very little is explained over the 2-hour runtime, yet very little needed to be explained. Its absurdly simple premise invites all kinds of weird shenanigans, as its rudimentary narrative required some abnormal **** to possibly be interesting.

Not enough can be said for Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, who play their respective characters exactly the way they ought to be played - exaggerated, almost grotesque abominations of the archetypes they're supposed to embody. Dafoe, a grizzled old sea dog constitutionally incapable of using timely language, at the cost of making his speech so mysterious and antiquated as to be almost completely devoid of meaning, and Pattinson, in perhaps a parody of his bleary-eyed heartthrob origins, a completely insufferable young buck who's so smug and self-assured in his way of life that he flat out refuses to cooperate with his elderly cohort in any way and makes his own life harder in effect.

Without spoiling anything, the back and forth between these two actors is the final piece of the puzzle towards making this one of the greatest horror films of all-time. The tension escalates to such a comically absurd degree that when it all boils over, Daniel Day-Lewis' savage beatdown of Paul Dano at the end of "There Will Be Blood" almost seems subdued and muted by comparison. And yet, the heart and soul of this film is how much fun it manages to be, despite the rather weighty subjects it plays with. It's a sophisticated, yet hilarious homage to weird fiction that will leave you absolutely speechless, nerve-wracked, drained, and profoundly entertained by the time it reaches its conclusion.… Expand

Wow. WOW. Go see this right now before its gone. This weekend. Buy your tickets. This is a contender for my favorite of the year up there with Midsommar. So many images are burned into my head after watching this. This is a MUST SEE.

Dafoe and Pattinson give two of the bravest performances< ever seen. This is a gritty, grimy, ghastly film that disturbed me in a very similar fashion to Midsommar. Ever piece of it has purpose and is executed masterfully to achieve the desired direction of Eggers. Give this movie awards. Teach it in classes. This movie is a clear vision completely finished to the T. I cant name a single flaw with it, for now. I'll be seeing this again this week and sitting on my opinion a bit before I give a rating on it (I'm clearly very hyped up on it right now) but its probably pretty clear to anyone reading this where I'm leaning...… Expand

Es la segunda película dirigida por el director Robert Eggers y conto con la ayuda de su hermano Max Eggers para realizar el guion de la misma, los personajes fueron interpretados por Robert Pattinson haciendo el papel de Thomas Howard, y Willem Defoe encarando a Thomas Wake. La película fue rodada en blanco y negro y con una relación de aspecto de 1.19:1, en su totalidad tiene una duración de 1h 50m.
The lighthouse desde su estreno fue muy bien recibida por los críticos, su director logro llevarse el premio FIPRESCI del festival de Cannes, y la película fue nominada a numerosos premios posteriormente (incluyendo a los óscar en la categoría de “Mejor fotografía”, pero no lo ganaría) y ganaría algunos como “Premio Satélite a mejor actor de reparto”, “Premio Spotlight”, “Independent Spirit Award al Mejor Actor de Reparto” y “Independent Spirit Award por Mejor Fotografía”. Actualmente la película logro recaudar $18.563.761 logrando superar así su coste de producción, que era de unos $4.000.000.
La trama de la obra presentada se ubica en el siglo XIX, más precisamente en el año 1890 y consta de una pareja de fareros (Thomas Howard y Thomas Wayne) que tendrán que convivir completamente aislados durante cuatro semanas en una pequeña isla cuidando de un faro, juntos tendrán que luchar por no verse sumergidos en la locura que conlleva el aislamiento, hasta que una serie de eventos hace que su estadía en la isla se prolongue hasta un tiempo indeterminado. Según los hermanos Eggers la película iba a ser un intento de adaptación al libro escrito por Edgar Allan Poe “The Light-House”, pero cuando el proyecto se detuvo Robert se ofreció a trabajar con Max y cambio la película dejando la idea del relato de Poe, pero agregando otras cosas como relatos y similitudes con personajes de la mitología griega o algunos personajes lovecraftianos Desde el punto de vista de producción, la utilización del color blanco y negro es un gran acierto para dar a entender al espectador la época en la que se sitúa la película, y la implementación de una pantalla en 1.19:1 ayuda al publico a sentir el mismo encerramiento y agobio que sienten los personajes, eso acompañado de unos planos cerrados casi claustrofóbicos. La isla al igual que los protagonistas podría ser considerada como otro personaje, debido a la atmosfera que transmite, que ayuda a que las acciones realizada por los protagonistas tenga un sentido. El misterio que envuelve el faro en el final es perfecto para la película, ya que invita al público expectante a pensar y teorizar después de haberla visto.
En conclusión, “The lighthouse” es una de las mejores películas del genero horror realizadas en el último tiempo, y entre otras cosas sirvió para seguir demostrando el buen ojo que tiene A24 para producir y financiar películas independientes. También para muchos es una demostración de lo que deberían hacer los directores de películas de terror, es decir, generar miedo a través de una atmosfera tenebrosa bien elaborada en el transcurso de la obra. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't really know what I just watched, but I guess it was shot pretty well and there was good acting. I mean I suppose I wasn't bored, so there's that. I suppose being trapped on an island in black and white while being forced to craft your own drinking alcohol would be pretty spooky. But I had many questions when the movie ended, like "What was the plot?", and "How did Willem Dafoe know Robert Pattinson was masturbating?" Who's mad? Am I mad? Maybe this is how the video tape in "The Ring" was produced. After all, there is a lighthouse in it, I think. I'ts been a while since I've watched that one. Hopefully I won't wake up in the middle of the night because of a fever dream where I want to **** a steak and jack off to a tiny statue that I found in my mattress.
Willem Dafoe made me believe he was a strange senile nutjob with his entertaining monologues, so that was fun.
All in all, would recommend. If you put this film on in front of a group of friends, you'll either clear the room out or maybe everyone will be slack-jawed once they see Robert Pattinson getting eaten by a gull.… Expand

Awesome character study about the depths of madness that loneliness and boredom takes you. The cinematography is fantastic. The leads are great. Willem Dafoe's performance is Oscar-worthy; reminiscent of Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

This movie is an actors movie. A real testament to the art, true craftsman. The story is well written, but the dialogue is so well executed that it provokes feelings of insanity, depression and fear without breaking a sweat. Imo, should haveThis movie is an actors movie. Wow! This film is an absolute masterpiece! If you have any interest in psychological horror movies at all then this is a must see for you. Every shot is beautiful from start to finish and the tension builds endlessly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is absolutely bonkers! Many have said that this is Willem Dafoe's best performance of his career and I can fully understand why. Throughout the film I don't really see Dafoe, I see Wake in all his swashbuckling greatness. Additionally he fully steals the film for me with 'the scene' in which after being hurt by Howard claiming not to like his cooking he goes on this long tirade wherein he damns the man, calling on Triton, and describes how he wants all these horribly gruesome things to happen to him.

Also throughout the film I was questioning everything that was happening because it's never stated what's real and what isn't. Wake even gaslights Howard claiming he chased him with an axe even though we see Wake chasing Howard seconds earlier. Howard also seemingly has several hallucinations throughout creating an unreliable narrator in him. So the whole time I'm analyzing and trying to figure out what is happening. This film is an amazing and zany descent into madness and I love it! Definitely worth a watch.… Expand

Absolutely fantastic, Robert Pattinson's acting was spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie. The movie was full of suspense, mystery and most of all thrill. Definitely recommend it to all.
