This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Expand

Not as comic book epic as the first Hulk movie, but Edward Norton is a class actor and he had two great adversaries/actors to play off from. This is more about about cool character interactions than a good overarching story for sure.

A great superhero movie.
Acting is terrific from everyone, especially from Ed Norton (Bruce Banner) and Liv Tyler (Betty Ross). Ed Norton manages to play with finesse different types of sequences that make us feel empathy for his character. The cast really is interesting, even if there are very few characters to get in touch with.

The scenario is great, as the introduction helps us to understand the events of the prequel. The whole movie is well-paced, paved with intense action intertwined with touching (even if one-dimensioned) romance. As a Marvel movie, it tries some jokes, but they always match the atmosphere, some being very funny.

The soundtrack is as terrific as the sound-design, and the movie rightfully uses moments of void and silence (as in the last scenes) to underline the most important scenes.

The quality of special effects vary : some scenes are amazing (particularly the explosive ones) while others (at the end notably) aren't that inspired. It goes the same way for colors and lighting as some shots are very dark or just plain disgusting grey. Fortunately to me the lore and relations between characters do the work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 2008's The Incredible Hulk feels like a more mature but lower quality adaptation of Beauty an the Beast.

The first half of the film feels more engaging than its latter half. We explore Bruce Banner as he struggles with his emotional management issues relating to the Hulk, and it feels like a film about self-exploration, and then we transition to what feels like a big narrative and tonal shift halfway through the film.

The latter half of the film then delves into generic superhero narrative territory, with Bruce Banner facing an antagonist that parallels him, and a big CGI-fest where Bruce gives in to his inner monster.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

If there is one thing that Lee's film succeeds better in, it is the visuals, don't get me wrong they are very stylish here but the ones in the 2003 film were slicker even if The Incredible Hulk is bigger and brasher. This said, the cinematography and editing are great and the locations and lighting look fantastic. The music rouses, the story compels most of the time and the dialogue provokes both in a thoughtful and emotional way.

I do think that director Louis Letterier brings a lot of passion into the film, especially with the use of the form of street running called Parkour that he also used in The Transporter. The action sequences are suitably thumping, with efficient choreography and slick editing. The romantic elements are handled in a shrewd manner in alternative to the danger of slowing the film down, and thankfully there is no underdeveloped and convoluted subplot like Lee's film did with Nick Nolte.

The first half though in a sense is better than the second. The second half is in no way bad, it's that the first half was very clever and compelling, and although you do identify with the titular character all the time and the finale is earth-shattering the film loses it a bit with the rather clichéd way the villain Blonsky is written and that his motives are not always very clear or as believable as they had potential to be.

Casting-wise The Incredible Hulk is excellent. Edward Norton brims with intensity but he is also sympathetic. The Incredible Hulk also succeeds in making a real sense that Banner and the Hulk inhabit the same tortured mind, which made it much more accessible to identify with him, something that Lee's film did not do. William Hurt is appropriately steely as General Ross, Liv Tyler is attractive and the essence of sympathy as Banner's girlfriend and although his character is not as believable Tim Roth does somehow manage to bring some credibility to him.

Overall, a very solid film, not perfect but better than the 2003 film by quite some distance. 8/10 Bethany Cox

My board exams had just gotten over so I thought this was the perfect time to bingewatch all the MCU movies so that I could catch up by the time Endgame came up. The very first movie I watched was Iron Man and it was so cool. So I had really high hopes with The Incredible Hulk. And it fell absolutely flat. There are many reasons why I hate this movie, so I'm gonna go one by one through all the reasons.

So first of all, since I was bingewatching all the movies of the greatest superhero movie franchise of all time, the only scenes that stood out for me were the absolutely fabulous ones. This is the reason why I'm easily able to judge which movies are memorable and which ones are not. This one had a very memorable starting, but afterwards nothing huge happens in it worth remembering. Stan Lee died because Hulk's blood fell in a bottle that he drank, some junkies in Brazil thrashed Bruce Banner and got beaten up by Hulk, Hulk ran from the police/army, Bruce was captured and tortured to make him angry, Hulk fought a creature which looked better than him but had the same powers. Yeah, that's all I remember from this movie.

Secondly, the quality this movie offered. I really liked Edward Norton. I have no problem with his role. In fact he looked more Bruce-almighty to me than Mark Ruffalo. But the CGI ruined everything. This is the reason why the movie felt like a drag to watch. Most of the time it was just talking, talking and even more talking. The volume was also very low so I couldn't even take any interest in the talking. There was even a sex scene where Bruce starts turning into Hulk so he gives up trying.

Thirdly the villain in the story was a lot more likeable than the hero, because of which I was absolutely certain in whom I should root for. And it was definitely not Hulk. The lizard dude was looking way better than Hulk. It's kinda sad that this is the only Hulk movie, but considering Hulk's enemies look better than him, there shouldn't be any more either. And lastly, the final result of this forgettable story. What did we get from this movie? It didn't progress the plot forward in any manner. It played very safe with the general superhero movie plot trend - Hero gets powers, tests them out, villain who has the same powers wants to take over the world, hero villain fight, hero wins, roll credits.

It seems weird thinking this movie is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because this one looks absolutely nothing like the otherwise colourful, vibrant, story-rich movies. I really wish Marvel remakes this movie by editing the colour grading, CGI, sound etc. Because without that, sadly, you really HAVE to watch this movie if you want to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

'The Incredible Hulk' is closer to being forgettable than it is to being memorable, but that's not to say I didn't have a solid time watching. It's only really the ending that I felt dragged, yet even then it still has positive moments.

I liked Edward Norton's performance for the most part, particularly early on in South America. Tim Roth is good too, though a few of his scenes irritated me slightly - perhaps more to do with how the film uses him, rather than what Roth does himself. There are a few others, but those two are the most standout.

I did expect more, but there's enough there that I rate.

I like how seriously it takes Bruce's struggle to keep Hulk out of his life. In this movie, whenever he hulks out, it's like he feels ashamed of himself after the fact. The counter of how many days he's spent without incidents is also a nice touch.

It is, for me, quite clear that, to be a sequel, it was made by others than the original actors and crew. When this happens, in general, the feeling of unity and continuity ceases to exist. And so it was.

In this film, Bruce Banner is a man on a mission: while remaining hidden from the American authorities, he tries as much as he can to find a cure or remedy for the genetic mutation he has and that leads him to transform. Interestingly, he is in Brazil, with no explanation as to why he is living in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, where a foreigner draws attention like an elephant in a china shop. Perhaps the director, Louis Leterrier, does not have a clear understanding of what these areas are like and how Brazil works. But we will continue ... and we will watch several attempts by the American army to capture Banner, which almost always end up in the same way: a lot of things destroyed and Hulk giving a brutal beating to the G.I.´s. The ending turns out to be easy to predict from the middle of the film.

Edward Norton is an extraordinary actor but he never seemed cut out for me to play this character, and I think he will have realized that himself later. Despite his talent, he never goes beyond average. William Hurt also looked very bad, in a cardboard villain that never proves to be credible or more than a walking cliché. Tim Roth was a casting error starting with the fact that he was not even American, or was able to disguise his accent. Liv Tyler was cold and unable to maintain good chemistry with Norton.

Technically, the film has qualities. Taking advantage of the large budget available to him, he uses and abuses CGI, special effects and sound, action scenes loaded with broken things and beating. Like the first film, the strong feature of this film is the pure and hard action, without any consistent plot. The result of this is a forgettable film, weak enough to not even be an option when we just want to spend some idle time.

Without a lasting legacy to leave behind, the whole film feels rather pointless and unnecessary. However, the story it tells is one that comes full circle in the span of under two hours. It's a complete story filled with great character interactions, awesome spectacle, and hard-hitting, but limited, action sequences. And although Edward Norton's performance was a one-off, he does an admirable job at bringing conviction to Banner. The eventual recasting of Mark Ruffalo, and the bleaching of the film in general, makes it such a strange movie. The ending, while somewhat reference in later Marvel endeavors, feels wasted and Dr. Samuels, aka Leader, feels even more-so.When recapping the entire saga, this is the single film that feels utterly awkward to view, despite the complete script. Its really disappointing that where this film really shines is when the Hulk isn't in it. I personally believe Edward Norton was a decent Bruce Banner. He really was doing a good job and he portrays the character in a way where you sympathise with his inner anguish. All the scenes where Bruce is trying to control his anger and deal with his inner struggle the film is very good. Unfortunately when the Hulk is prominent in the film it really suffers. First of all the character design and visual effects are dreadful making each scene with him in it looks very fake and that really makes the film suffer. The most disappointing aspect of the film is the main villain the Abomination. His character design is absolutely terrible and the visual effects used to create him look laughably bad. The whole 3rd act is a clusterf**k of terrible visual effects and poorly choreographed fight scenes which makes it a sour viewing experience. Overall The Incredible Hulk is a disappointing experience filled with compelling scenes of inner struggle yet laughable visual effects and poor use of action. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A big improvement on the 2003 Ang Lee Hulk film (which wasn't hard tbh), not a amazing film but not a terrible one either. Feels a little bit irrelevant to the MCU but as a solo film it's decent. The action scenes are very fun and most performances are good.

Only thing I find a bit weird is the casting choice of Tim Roth as this amazing decorated soldier, it just doesn't fit. He never feels all that intimidating in the entire film until the end (for obvious reasons), that's really my only big gripe with the film

This film is objectively better from a technical standpoint than its predecessor, Iron Man. Cinematography is done artfully and carefully with lots of attention to pleasing compositions and meaningful movement and framing. The locations, environments, lighting, and weather are all used to great effect to give mood to the film's various situations and arcs. The score by Craig Armstrong, one of my favorite film composers, enriched each scene with appropriate energy and emotion. The performances of the main cast were convincing. I really felt the connections between the characters and the emotions of the characters. For a film that's relatively light on story, it really makes up with it with pleasing characters, visuals, and action. The action scenes were thrilling and handled particularly well, much more fun to watch than the action scenes in Iron Man, as these are more carefully planned and coreographed, with some truly surprise moments. I found there were moments of sheer awe and horror in the brutality of The Hulk and his fights with the menacing villains. I was even kind of surprised to see later parts of the film take on the feeling of a monster movie, evoking feelings of Godzilla, Cloverfield, and others of that genre. It worked very well and helped us feel the surrounding characters' fear of the "monster" they'd created in Bruce Banner. Great movie. I'd watch it again. It has a few weaknesses, namely every moment involving Mr. Blue, who gave a rather grating performance. There are a few moments that feel rushed, or forced, or cheesy, but all-in-all for such a simple story this film worked really well for me. I'm sad to see Ed Norton didn't keep the role, because I highly prefer him to Mark Ruffalo for this character. Expand

I kinda like The Incredible Hulk. Sure, some performances are bad and the choice of Edward Norton as Bruce Banner makes this film feel odd, but the script as plot are pretty solid, and I love the blink and you miss it tie ins. Like it really does a good job referencing Iron Man in a natural way that can be easily missed ( not including the end scene). Also, that scene with Tony, I argue, is more iconic and powerful than the one from Iron Man. To general audiences, that solidified that these two different movies take place in the same world on a great way that just clicks. I love the take on Bruce, a man on the run gives the stakes all the more weight. If he turns, he’ll be found. It just makes sense and balances out the Hulk’s power. Edward Norton is a bad Bruce though. He just doesn’t look the part at all, I much prefer Mark Ruffalo. Expand

So for me there is no any solo movie for Hulk! Even the performance of each character was super-bad, except for Mark Ruffalo, the only Hulk who I really loved, but Edward Norton as Bruce Banner is totally unconvincing and bad! In any case, Edward Norton wasn't the only one who acted badly for me, more than 90% of the characters were bad too!
The story isn't about Hulk as I saw, it was about the love story between Bruce and Betty!
The CGI was totally bad, messy and didn't comfort my eyes at all!
Hulk wasn't INCREDIBLE at all!

The story is poor and boring, with some sh*tty CGI and some good fights.. with all of that, The Incredible Hulk was born and it's calling itself a movie!!!
The opening credits is totally 70'. It showed some stuff about Hulk, but not enough, Iron Man showed us the begging of Iron man, Captain America too showed some good stuff as a begging, but The Incredible Hulk showed nothing but some sh*tty scenes with a greed screen above the scenes!!!!

Bruce is trying the whole movie to prevent showing Hulk, so The Incredible Hulk most of the time is showing the life of Bruce not Hulk, and when Hulk shows up, I just see a very bad CGI green idiot in front of me!!!!

And of course the romance was terrible.. The only thing that I liked in this movie is the last 30 min of the movie, and thought, I barley could watch it, cause it went up and then to he bottom again and then the final fight, and then.. go home, you mothe*******!

One of the worst movies of all time!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hulk goes into the second round! This time, the broken scientist is played by Edward Norton. The successor of Eric Bana and Lou Ferrigno gives Bruce Banner a certain vulnerability and acts more human than its predecessors. It's just not a parade for Norton. Norton is coming for me completely under-challenged. With this reorientation of the comics Hulk, all the main characters were exchanged. Betty Ross is now played by Liv Tyler. Tyler doesn't really fit into the role. Her charisma comes more naively over and the prehistory with Bruce Banner, one does not look at her. Also General Ross was now taken over by William Hurt. Like his predecessor Sam Elliott, Hurt also has a good screen presence and costs it completely. The main opponent is Emil Blonsky this time and is played by Tim Roth. Although Roth is motivated by his role, and he also sees that he is buckling, he also seems a bit stunted. One could have afforded more freedom for Roth.
The director's post took over this time Louis Letterier. Letterier relies more on action and effects than on figure drawings. His predecessor Ang Lee had rather told it as a romantic comic book fairy tale. Although Lee was rather lengthy in his history, Letterier is rather superficial. My favorite scene is when Hulk hits Blunsky for the second time. Blunsky says dry: Is that all? And you can see that in this version a bit: Is that all? Was that all? Conclusion: Better a few effects less to work out the screenplay better!

Let’s fast-forward things back in 2008,when Marvel was riding off the heels of Iron Man’s success and the fans’ mind-blowing reaction to the post-credit scene of Nick Fury introducing the Avengers Initiative.
After everyone saw Iron Man,everyone didn’t know where the Marvel Universe would go,so hearing the news of another Hulk movie was both great news and terrible news, since we know what happened to the last Hulk movie (also because Hulk is owned by Universal and stuff)…. And that’s where we had “The Incredible Hulk”,a movie that promised us a new version of the Hulk (and a refresher from 2003… Ok,I’ll stop).
But if we’re going to see if it’s any good or not 10 years later (kind of astounding how it held up by itself, honestly),let’s see if it still holds up or not.
So,the story. To understand the story, technically you’ll have to see the 2003 Hulk movie by Ang Lee (I guess, which if you don’t want to,glad they retell that for the new viewers in the title sequence) to get some explanations of what’s going on in the beginning of the movie (when we’re introduced to Bruce Banner’s life),but, cutting that flaw out,the rest is interesting to look at. We understand why Bruce Banner (played by Edward Norton) is having a troubled life with the military, his love for Betty Ross (played by Liv Tyler) and his anger/excitement issues that lead him to becoming the Hulk,as the title says. Even if in the end,he realizes that no matter what he does, the city still needs him, even if he’ll SMASH his way through everything.
Speaking of that,at the same time,in the 3rd act,we’ll get introduced to the villain,Abomination (played by Tim Roth),where I’m kind of mixed. Look, his actions are not really understandable: He’s a Professional Soldier,he gets angry after he got beaten by a kick from Hulk, then he gets crazy and crazy as the movie progresses, him and his creepy CG’d out body (he gets the Super-Soldier serum,so that’ll better explain something…),then he becomes the Abomination just so he can kick Hulk’s butt. It’s not horrible, but it feels like the writers saw a Videogame Rage Compilation and thought “What if the angry player gets his revenge on him,and actually wins?” to just get away with it. Back to Bruce Banner, his relation with Betty is really sweet and Edward Norton plays a “scared, always on the lookout” Bruce Banner expertly.
Tim Roth is intimidating as Abomination and Liv Tyler was basically ‘Jennifer Connelly from Hulk 2003’ 2.0,since her lines are told in this weird,coff-y and muted tone, and a scene involving a Taxi Driver driving like if it’s a Car Chase (that was outta nowhere…). That, and the scene where Hulk throws a rock through the storm to defend Betty cracks a laugh for me. Sorry, but it’s just me.
Now,for the Special Effects...as of today, they look like the perfect Nintendo Switch videogame, ported by Panic Button. But,for 2008 standards, this felt serviceable. The action was fast and frenetic, and the Motion Capture was nice.
And yeah, the score is still another “Marvel Score where you’ll remember the theme and its action cues”,but it’s one of the better ones, being composed by Craig Armstrong (he also composed The Great Gatsby).
So in the end,I think The Incredible Hulk is an underrated MCU Movie that fans don’t necessarily have to go see now. Maybe for a fun time. And hey,it being a Universal movie from 2008 was kinda surprising since it has better qualities in it than Cash World Fallen Profit.

After 'Iron Man''sIt's funny that even though 2008's The Incredible Hulk most likely **** the MCU timeline) took place in 2010 and after Iron Man 2 and was released the same as Iron Man that this film wasn't as good as it could have been. After 'Iron Man''s success, I would've thought 'The Incredible Hulk' would have been just as good if not better than 'Iron Man'. I also don't think it helped that the film was released just a month after 'Iron Man'. This movie isn't bad, but it's definitely not great. There are plenty of issues with it. Like Spider-Man's Norman Osborn, Bruce Banner wants to prove an experiment works and tries it out on himself. Except in this case, Bruce is exposed to gamma radiation and turns into a green monster filled with rage. Because of this, he's on the run from the United States Army, and the general that wants him locked up just so happens to be the father of his girlfriend.

The performances in this film were just okay, nothing memorable. Edward Norton's take on Bruce Banner was fine, but he wasn't a believable Hulk to me. Liv Tyler's performance as Betty Ross, Bruce's girlfriend, was very forgettable. The chemistry between these two is honestly laughable. There is no spark between them compared to Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow's Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. When they are on screen together, Norton and Tyler seem to force chemistry between them, and it doesn't work. Tim Roth's performance as the villain Emil Blonsky, a.k.a., Abomination is also forgettable. In terms of the MCU, he's one of the most forgettable villains and arguable the worst villain of Phase One. William Hurt gave a decent performance, but it wasn't enough for me to love this movie. But I think the worst performance goes to Tim Blake Nelson who played Samuel Sterns. His character was so irritating, and the acting was so forced and laughable. The whole performance was an abomination. (See what I did there?) The funny part is, we didn't see him until just before the final battle, yet he gave the worst performance out of everyone.

The pacing in this film also isn't good. While it's clear that Bruce has been on the run for a while, the film is very slow, and there aren't many exciting moments that help the film go by faster. According to the MCU timeline, Bruce had been on the run since 2005 when he first became the Hulk. I'm not saying they should have established that more, but it might have helped the pacing of the film considering it felt longer than the actual runtime.

There are some positives to this film, particularly the action sequences and visual effects. While I did enjoy them, the final battle was too quick. It was a long battle, but because the battle featured 2 giant monsters fighting that could move quickly, it was hard to study the scene. I felt the Culver University battle had more intensity and better lighting so you could see the action easier.

I also really enjoyed the score even though it isn't the best of the MCU. The Hulk's theme is suspenseful while the Bruce and Betty theme is more emotional, which I really liked.

I'm not a big fan of the costume design. Hulk looks nothing like Edward Norton, not even a little bit. The hairstyle is completely different, which kind of gives it away that they look nothing alike. This is where Mark Ruffalo's Hulk succeeds. It looks more like him. The Abomination also isn't appealing to look at. I get that they're monsters, but they don't really look menacing.

While I did point out more negatives than positives in this film, I still believe that 'The Incredible Hulk' isn't a bad film. It's not great, but it's more of an average film.

Nearly every aspect of this movie (story, plot, pacing, characters, CGI) is bad. Marvel chose Edward Norton to portray Bruce Banner but he failed to deliver. We now know that Mark Ruffalo was a candidate for the role back then, and later on he successfully replaced Norton in the Avengers movies. Despite some legal issues with Universal, it's no wonder Marvel haven't made another Hulk solo movie since, and all the actors never reprised their roles (except for William Hurt who recently returned to the MCU and his Thunderbolt character is very different in Civil War). Much better than 2003’s Eric Bana Hulk, The Incredible Hulk still fails to match up against other Superhero movies, such as The Avengers.

It's the worst MCU movie. This movie failed as a super hero movie and as a Hollywood movie. However, it's still better than some super hero movies that I don't want to talk about.

Some better than Ang Lee version with several Easter eggs and winks to TV series of 70s. If it has a defect or two, it´s the hasty start sequence and the short sequence dedicated to villian. For kill 112 minutes with the less of pain.

Iron Man looked much better then this. The green/blue screen shots also looked bad at times. The dialogue exchanged by Bruce (Edward Norton) and Elizabeth (Liv Tyler) didn't have much substance to it and felt quite boring at times. Overall this is one of the more dissapointing movies out of the MCU, but not horribly bad either.

The Incredible Hulk was a let down compared to Iron Man. Hulk took itself way too seriously that it ended up being really cheesy. The slow pace of the movie and the miscasting of many characters hurt this movie imo.

The incredible hulk was a good movie but it still had its problems that it gets boring at some parts of the movie and the hulk brings a fun experience but the movie is bit dated as it was made in 08 but the movie is decent

A bland film at best. Edward Norton as Bruce Banner is good, as well as the other cast, but the story does not strike compelling nor different from any other action-blockbuster film.

A good cast, a mediocre plot, decent CGI, blend all of this together and you have what is for me the weakest instalment of the MCU. Bland storytelling that climaxes in a colourful hero clashing with a grey villain.

I liked Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, but it takes like 30 minutes for him to start doing any kind of hulking. And when he's not hulking, which he mostly isn't, the movie is either uninteresting exposition or a romance between Bruce and Arwen from The Lord of the Rings, who by the way sounds like she's having breathing problems every time she talks. The special effects also aren't that great and I had a hard time caring about any of the characters in the end. There are some fun dialogue scenes, but they are seriously lacking and definitely aren't enough to make me care to watch this thing again. Expand

The cast seems bored a lot of the time, despite including talent like Edward Norton and Tim Roth. There's a surprising lack of urgency given the situations the characters find themselves in. Of course, there's nothing wrong with giving a movie time to breathe, but here, there's not much interesting going on. I found myself yearning for excitement on more than one occasion. At the end of the day, The Incredible Hulk is the kind of totally fine movie that you put on in the background when doing something else. Expand

I hate this movie. By the end of the movie I wanted to kill myself. The story is awful. The dialogue sucks. And don't even get me about the characters. Edward Norton sucked. No personality at all. Edward Norton sucked. No personality at all. How come this movie has such a good score I don't know. It's the worst movie I've ever seen. The choreography is awful. I don't care if this is a spoiler because you shouldn't ever watch this piling piece of crap. The only good part of the movie is the after credits scene because it introduces you to Hulk joining the Avengers. Don't watch this film. Please don't watch it. You'll want to kill yourself by the end of it. Expand
