Benedict Cumberbatch gives a standout performance in this smart, touching, and informative biopic. It's a fascinating story, told with tremendous respect and appreciation for its subject.

The film, which is set in the 1930s and beyond, has an "Oscar bait" feel to it but manages to tell the story of a complex man who struggles to fit in with society. Cumberbatch does a great job of portraying Turing's brilliance, failures, persistence and cerebralness, while the supporting cast of Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode complement him well. Although the film may not be the most thrilling story, it stands out for its uniqueness compared to many other films that have come out since its release.

A film about a fascinating story. As I did not know much about the subject, I had the opportunity to discover with pleasure some new, fascinating information.
And one of Benedict best performances.

I don't trust the nonsense blablabla saying "because we never give up hope " manpower ,information , weaponry ... all effect win rate . This is neither accurate retelling of Turing's story nor a gripping movie. A lot of info was rewritten/omitted, and for what? The Wikipedia article is a much more interesting read.

Likewise his story is important and deserves to be told rather than forgotten. Had high hopes for 'The Imitation Game', after hearing so many good things about it, and it ended up being one of my favourite films of 2014.

That 'The Imitation Game' is historically inaccurate and has distortions didn't offend me as much as some reviewers, biographical dramas are notorious for this so it's come to be expected by me (not that that is meant to be an excuse). All that was wanted was a film that made me think, moved me, was well made and well acted. 'The Imitation Game' was all those things and more.

It isn't perfect, the political elements are on the preachy side and there are a few strands that could have gone into more detail, Turing's sexuality should have gotten into more depth than it was.

However, 'The Imitation Game' is exceptionally well made. It's immaculately photographed and has some of the best production design of its best, especially in the costumes. The direction allows the film to be absorbing, while the music score is often hauntingly beautiful and never intrusive.

In terms of the script, 'The Imitation Game' does a wonderful job in provoking thought and providing emotional impact and nuances and fleshes the characters out with remarkable complexity. What could have been potentially dry treatment of the subject matter turned out to be fascinating, thrilling and very moving.

Benedict Cumberbatch gives his best performance of a very solid career, an outstanding portrayal that won't be forgotten for years to come. Keira Knightley is a sympathetic confidante and Charles Dance is excellent as always as his superior. The supporting cast are without complaint.

Overall, wonderful film and its acclaim is a long way from an enigma. 9/10 Bethany Cox

A brilliant film about a brilliant mind.

This film is based on the life of Alan Turing, the father of the modern computer. He is a truly remarkable character, responsible for the era of technology in which we live and one of the most brilliant people of the 20th century. This film focuses mainly on Turing's effort, during the Second World War, to decipher the secret codes of German military communications, hitherto undecipherable. The film, however, also addresses the issue surrounding Turing's homosexuality.

As it was a period film based on a book, I was already expecting some mishaps to the true story, and it was unsurprisingly that I read some reviews where it was mentioned. But I am not the best person to evaluate this because I do not know the figure of Alan Turing in detail, nor did I dedicate myself to read that book to see if it shares the same flaws. But yes, I admit such possibilities and, given that it is a period film based on a true story, this is something that I personally penalize. I am one of those people who understand that, in these cases, freedom of creation must be well demarcated. Another thing I would like to understand better is whether the book, like the film, takes Turing's suicide for granted, since there were serious doubts about it at the time. Aside from these reservations, I had no major problems with the script that, without giving too much detail, sweeps the scientist's life very close to death, making use of the flashback to visit and present situations from the past.

Morten Tyldum ensures effective and competent management. He is a director I didn't know yet and who has been circulating more on television, but he did a good job. Benedict Cumberbatch, whom I only remembered seeing play secondary roles and the villain of "Star Trek Into Darkness", had his opportunity to show value and did not disappoint. He was devastating in the main role, complex and psychologically challenging character. The work paid off well, and although I haven't seen many of the films he came in after this one, seeing his filmography here on the website is enough to see how much his career has benefited and grown. Next to her is Keira Knightley, a veteran of period films, with an already solid career. Rory Kinnear, Matthew Goode and Charles Dance also did a good job.

Technically, there is little to say about this film. The filming and photography work was well done but the exquisite editing and post-production effort, with all those flashbacks, stands out particularly. The soundtrack, by Alexandre Desplat, is to be congratulated and remains a little in the ear after the film ends. The sets and costumes are excellent and I think they are faithful enough to the period portrayed.

Oscar winner (Best Adapted Screenplay) was nominated for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Edition, Best Soundtrack and Best Production Design. Not being a perfect film, I think it was relatively close to that.

A sad, touching, frightening and instructive story. which was to be shown to the whole world! Alan, Joan and other heroes need to understand, feel their emotions, see their eyes. And the whole movie itself needs to be viewed from different angles, not to be judged as a criminal thriller or just drama. A worthy play of actors, skillful scale, effects and operator work.

Imprescindible. Una de las mejores películas de 2014.

I loved it; for a movie created in 2014 as well as conceptualized because the director simply wanted to teach the millions of average joes the rich history, amazing team and awesome creations made this film even better. In fact, in Mortem Tyldum's own words: "I've always loved history, and I was actually shocked by how little I actually knew. I was amazed this wasn't common knowledge. Why wasn't he on the front covers of my history books? He's one of the great thinkers of the last century, and he was sort of pushed into the shadows. The importance of making this movie and spreading the legacy of this man becomes so big.”

Plus, the movie itself reflected and was a near 100% accurate description of the actual event, representing nearly perfectly how it all went down, to the point where this movie should be shown and taught to all schools throughout America, because it also shows as a "side note" the problems and obstacles homosexuals faced back in the 1950s, which further accentuates the movie's accurate portrayal of Alan Turing. His soon-to-be wife, Joan Clarke, didn't care he was gay, and still loved him, spicing the emotions in the movie to a whole new universe, which, for me, was amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I read the Executive Producers were the Weinstein Brothers, I immediately knew the movie will take its creative license beyond reason. I wasn't disappointed at that. "Based on true events" doesn't mean anything as probably most have learned by now. Key events in the story line are almost entirely made up. True key events have been completely ignored, and the usual Hollywood political agenda's are on full display. I didn't ask for any personal political insights, I didn't want pay for that.

This movie aims directly at promoting homosexuality through emotions. First we are directed to love Turing because of his accomplishment, then we are directed to feel sad for him because he pays a price for being what he is. At the end multiple tear jerking scenes were built in to help you towards that emotional state.

The clunky behavior of the genius has been depicted the way it is always depicted: somewhat stuttering, looking at the floor, no sense of humor, not understanding metaphors. All in all, stereotyping and cliché galore right here in the very first five minutes he was introduced.

Turing finds the code by sheer coincidence more or less we are led to believe. The reality is that just about every story about accidental discoveries have been debunked. Newton's apple, Archimedes bathtub, all are stories which turned out not to be true. These grand discoveries, just like cracking the Enigma Code, have been discovered by hard work and professionalism.

Poland discovered the logic behind the Enigma years before the British did. The Germans increased the number of combinations, which made the code more intensive to break. The Polaks ran out of funds to create a better decoding machine and handed over the know-how to Great Britain and France. Turing (and certainly not him alone) improved the machine the Polaks built and which they called "Bombe". Not a word about that in the movie off course. Just like in the movie "Black Hawk Down", where the crucial role of the Malayan (!) snipers to bail out the Americans has been completely ignored.

Also, Turing was never investigated for being a possible spy, nor did he kept knowledge of a spy to himself. He would have played with his life if he did that. He was under investigation for being a gay tho. The scene was also used to connect Turing with MI6 even more, but that was unnecessary; as it turned out in the end, Turing was more than happy to work with MI6 for his own schemes (which is a lie too).

The audience will learn nothing about the code itself. Not a clue on how it works (it's not even that hard!), nothing.

Code breakers are hired if they could solve crossword or cryptographic puzzles. Needless to say that the smartest person is tardy but gets to participate in the test anyway (cliché cliché), and turns out to be even faster than the great Turing himself! An oh, it's a woman! A completely made up event. Feminism at work in its fullest glory. Acknowledging her intelligence (she really was) is not enough it seems. She had to be the smarter than all men, including Turing. She already worked at Bletchley in reality. And she slapped Turing! Beating men is a sure sign of female strength in the doctrine of many feminists. That too never happened. In reality Joan Clarke was very submissive.

Turing supposedly had a say in how to use this machine strategically. He contacted MI6 to scheme with, ignoring his employer. The reality is vice versa: MI6 instructed Turing what to do. Turing had no say. A feeble attempt to make Turing even better than he already was, but the attempt was over the top. I can't imagine the viewer didn't notice.

So there it is people. This movie represents blatant promotion of multiple Hollywood agenda's, over-dramatization, over-simplification and factual incorrectness about all key events. This movie represents all that to its fullest.

A man who was largely responsible for cutting short the second world war by two years and saving millions of lives. Of course the film-maker's have taken some liberties with the facts in the name of art. Turing's love interested was a plan Jane not someone who looked like Keira Knightley, there were no Eureka moments in the pub and the groundwork laid by Polish cryptographers is brushed over. But nonetheless this is an intelligent and, dare I say, exciting film. I particularly enjoyed the way the three strands of narrative (the code-breaking years, the police investigation and the school years) are interwoven. Strong supporting performances by Mark Strong and Rory Kinnear add to the mix. Above all, Cumberbatch is mesmerising as Alan Turing. Expand

My wife and I visited Bletchley Park a few years back and I've read a lot of the history of the codebreakers but I'm certainly not an expert. Or even a pedant (I hope).

Trouble with these kinda historical biopics is that they become the received version for history. Does that matter? Maybe. Even the author of the book from which it is based had some significant quibbles with the storyline. Does Turing have to be such as ass in this version? Was he really so painful in real life?

No mention of Tommy Flowers - the man who really built the Colossus machine?

It should make a great mini series - or just add another 20 minutes to fill in the details. Like one professional critic said: a good movie that should have been great.

One of the howlers - The real Alan Turing was not investigated for being a possible Soviet spy. The real story of breaking the Enigma code and Ultra, the keeping of the secret, is interesting enough without rewriting history. Sure I get it, take some liberties to make it filmatic but c'mon guys. This doesn't feel RIGHT.

Why call it "Christopher" when in real life it was the "bombe". From HistoryVSHollywood: "Turing didn't come up with the design for the improved Bombe machine on his own. Gordon Welchman, a mathematician who is not mentioned in the film, collaborated with Turing. -Alan Turing: The Enigma"

The Imitation Game has all the key moments to make it to the Oscars. The heart and soul of this movie is Alan Turing whose brilliant work saved millions of lives in WW2. The actors give in depth performances to make this an award winning movie.

The Imitation Game is interesting in its portrayal of WWII code breakers, but at times, the story is intellectually teetering and emotionally unsatisfying.

It is an intriguing story, and centers on a genius mathematician trying to decipher German encrypted battle codes which could effectively turn the war in favor of the British and the Allies.

The good parts of this movie are the "based on real events" story, and the philosophical side of human relationships which leaves you with something to think about, and was good for a single viewing. The weakness is that the storyline continually tries to propel itself by inserting urgency at the expense of the intellect of the movie, and at times the genius characters seem like they should have known something that just dawns of them.
Also the relationships seemed unnatural as if they wanted to create emotional conflict but not have it evident in the next scene. These weaknesses make an otherwise smart movie feel a little dumbed down.

The human side of the story could be along the lines of other movies like Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind, Social Network, Pollock etc..
This one is worth a watch but not as satisfying or thrilling as hoped based upon the intriguing setup and the great true story.

Yet, The Imitation Game does it with quiet assurance and ease. Director Morten Tyldum continues to demonstrate his skill in the director's chair here, though the real stars are Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, who are simply delightful in the lead roles. Cumberbatch embodies Alan Turing and turns in an emotionally devastating and touching performance that shows both the uniqueness and brilliance of the man, while also accurately portraying the injustice he faced. The Imitation Game is a very well-written film that is a very moving and thrilling experience that encapsulates Alan Turing, his accomplishments, and his struggles. Overall, The Imitation Game is a very good film that operates both as a good biopic and a good drama. Expand

WHAT I LIKED: Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of this film, Alan Turing feels real and his character is amazingly explored here. The supporting cast are great too.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It could take a leaf out of 'The Theory of Everything's' book and include more plot to keep audiences engaged and rooting for the character, as opposed to here where we empathise, but don't wish for the breaking of the enigma code or his relationship to succeed because interest is lost slightly.
VERDICT: It's this simple plot and constant technical jargon that makes this film feel a little dissapointing, but it's the acting and character development that earn it its good rating.

I stress 'believable' and not 'historical accurate' because I wonder how historical this picture really is. The wikipedia page of Turing seems to tell a somewhat different and more complex story. Complex and movies are uneasy bedfellows.

History appears twisted at various points for the sake of the story. One example is that when they crack the code the first time a team member discovers that a convoy containing a ship on which his brother is an ensign will be the target of an u-boat attack. Not only seems it oddly coincidental that this happens at that particular time, but it is doubly remarkable that he knows the exact particulars of that convoy. I am sure those were not known to him and probably not even known to his brother. Therefore this is more likely done to underscore the dramatic implications of the knowledge they gained: they cannot save the convoy because otherwise the Germans would know that their code has been 'cracked'. I even wonder if Turing was in the position to make that decision as is suggested in this movie.

We can start listing more odd things but I can only say that I cannot tell right from wrong in this, which is the whole problem of historical movies and which is why it places a burden on the movie-makers. Yet even without any historical knowledge I can tell you that it misconstrues history in a serious way. It is the same when people like Newton, Edison, Einstein, Hubble and Oppenheimer are displayed in movies: it is the idea that any scientific discovery is the work of a single brilliant man working in total isolation or, even working in opposition to general opinion. This story seems highly unlikely and again internet sources paint a different picture. Science isn't done in total isolation or in opposition towards other people.

The main problem with this is that people start to think this nonsense to be true and turn them into politics. If you do not believe me, just go and look up Ayn Rand and Objectivism. Supporters of this delusion propagate the idea that progress is the work of key individuals and the wealthy readily agree with them, for in their view they are these important individuals and should therefore be tax-exempt..

Reality is somewhat different. The human condition is one of team work. Humans are social beings, not lone predators. It is working together that advances people,it always has been, but we can't get our minds around that fact. Instead a movie has to simplify things and tells us a story of the one man against the odds who through sheer perseverance or conviction saves countless lives. That is, movies are stories, and stories have a hero(heroine), a bad guy, a conflict and a resolution.

The movie itself does it well. The characters, events and story are believable and the movie keeps a persistent pace to hold our attention. There is nothing wrong with the way the story is told if you just consider it to be a story. Even Turing's homosexuality is addressed, though in a somewhat suppressed way, but enough to feel ashamed that it took more than half a century for him to be pardoned for what was then considered to be a crime, but now is accepted and rightly so.

Greatly recommended as a story but should be approached with the utmost caution as a historical accurate portrayal.

I watched the film with a notebook beside me and filled two A4 sides of notes with historical and technical inaccuracies!!

Anybody who knows absolutely nothing about the wartime history BP and the history of Alan Turing, both at the Park and after he left, will - no doubt - find this a very entertaining film! Those who DO know the history of BP during the war, and the part played by Alan Turing, will find this film the biggest load of garbage ever - not to mention an insult to both Bletchley Park and Alan Turing!!

I'm not surprised that Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for an Oscar but it was for his acting ability and certainly not for an accurate portayal of AT! Those who describe this film as: "Brilliant"; "Genius"; "Magnificent" etc etc, obviously know absolutely nothing about what REALLY went on at BP during the war and the part played by AT.

You mention the name "Bletchley Park" to most people and they think: "Enigma and Alan Turing"! This is wholly due to the blind promotionof the Park as being entirely the home of Enigma and Alan Turing! He was one of between 8,000 and 10,000 people who worked there and there were many people who contributed just as much as he did, if not more, that nobody has ever heard of!

For Instance: Col John Tiltman; Bill Tutte; Prof Max Newman; Major Ralph Tester; Tommy Flowers, Alan Coombs; Sid Broadhurst and many, many others. These were the people responsible for breaking the German Lorenz code, and making the machines that did it, that was used by Hitler and the High Command who did not want to use Enigma, but who has ever heard of these people? The forgotten genius's of Bletchley Park!

BP did NOT revolve aroung Enigma and Alan Turing but thanks to modern TV, films and the such like we are all led to believe that this is, in fact, the case.

If you visit Bletchley Park make sure you visit The National Museum of Computing that tells the entire story of Lorenz, Hitler and the High Command - it might surprise you!! That is the OTHER side of wartime codebreaking that very few people actually know about!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact that it is well-acted, well-shot and well-written, does nothing to disguise that this film is an work of fiction - anyone even remotely familiar with Turing and the war's history will know for a fact that the majority of plot points and general themes portrayed in the film never occurred.
It may make for interesting viewing, but it does a disservice not only to Turing, who was only a little like the character portrayed in the film, but also to the other highly-involved members of the Bletchly team who, far from being forcibly opposed to Turing's machine, actually were fully involved - to the extent that the letter delivered to Churchill was signed not by Turing but by the entire team. It is ridiculous to suggest, even in fiction, that the bulk of the code-breaking effort came from one man - or even a man and a female counterpart.

Other points of contention:
* Alan was never close to being fired in the manner portrayed in the film.
* The prolific antagonism towards Turing portrayed was non-existent. While there was antagonism, it was between many different members of the team.
* The Bombe did not take the extremely long decoding time portrayed in the film.
* The Colonel was not highly antagonistic towards Turing, he was merely a little incompetent and unforceful in terms of requesting support from higher up, which is why the team bypassed him to go straight to Churchill with their request for support.

Turing was a genius, and I do like Cumberbatch's acting and portrayal, but there is so much wrong with this film - it has never, for example, been settled that Turing's death was a suicide - the director seems to make a number of assumptions in this regard, as his interviews show.

In short, author of the script took the key points of Alan Turing's life and the Bletchly project, altered them significant, then built a movie out of them; failing both at historical recognition, and personal recognition.
The film is only redeemed through it's strong message of tolerance, charismatic acting and musical scoring.

'You don't get to decide who lives and dies'...'Yes I do.'
For all the ideology, democracy vs tyranny, families vs order and freedom vs dictatorship, I learnt that the war, indeed perhaps the fate of Britain came down to a few nerds in the south of England. While this film lacked the war-laden drama of say 'Munich' or the sheer compelling biographical odyssey of 'The Theory of Everything' this is in my opinion, an intelligent and supposeldly genuine portrayal of Turing ans his team's struggles.
While the Oscar nomination might've been a little far fetched, Cumberbatch performs his role with both an uncanny authority and a considered portrayal of the erratic 'tortured genius' stereotype. His homosexuality adds a lot to the intrigue without distracting the audience from the narrative of the war. A simple yet beautiful setting, subtle yet flowing soundtrack comparable with 'A Beautiful Mind.'
Perhaps the faithful portrayal of events prevented this film from scaling more dramatic or compelling heights, but I would certainly recommend this to any history or biographical film buffs

This and The Grand Budapest Hotel, I believe, were two of the best movies of 2014. Ironically both films were scored by the same composer. Kudos to him.

The acting and screenwriting to this movie was impeccable. Great, great, great is all I can say about those aspects of the film.

All the actors were superb especially Benedict Cumberbatch who I believe should have won the Academy Award for his performance. I am looking forward to the next season of Sherlock.

I also enjoyed the acting and roles played by Mark Strong and Charles Dance. I first came across Dance in The Jewel in the Crown and thought he would go far but alas such was not the case.. As to Mark Strong, what can you say? He is one of the best actors around.

The only let down related to Keira Knightley - her over the top accent and that ugly, repulsive hair colour. Why on earth did they give her that shade of hair colour for the movie? It was distracting to me.

This movie is great. By all means see it. You will not be let down.

Alan Turing: "I like solving problems, Commander. And Enigma is the most difficult problem in the world."

The Imitation Game is about a true life story of the English cryptanalyst, mathematician and logician Alan Turing. During WWII the Turing led a group of code breakers at a top secret facility in Bletchley Park during the darkest days of the war in order to crack the German's Enigma code.

Well it's settled, British films have completely change for the usual stick in the mood, low budget film. Oscar season after Oscar season, British films always make the nominations for Best Picture or Best Actor. Of course this movie got the big nominations and I so glad this got a lot of nominations from the Oscars, because this movie was pretty incredible.

Now we have seen Cumberbatch in pretty much everything now: Sc-Fi, TV shows, animated films, drama, comedy, action and good god this guy is everywhere. Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie almost brought me into tears with his excellent performance as Alan Turning. Benedict is always good at playing these smart-ass genius that's always higher than anyone else, well in this it's a lot different. Yeah he starts off a bit unlikable how he shows off that he's the smart guy in the room, but after a while it changes and I actually felt sorry for this guy when you get to know his past and his secret that he tries to hind for all of his life. Benedict Cumberbatch played this guy so beautifully well that I think this is by far his best performances in his career.

Keira Knightley has well dose a brilliant job playing her character in this film. Now I'm going to get some hate for this but I never liked Keira Knightley has a actress. She never locked on to me and she never won me over. I don't think She's a awful actress or anything like that I just never got into her as a actress, but in this film she dose do good as a supporting character that's really important to the story. Good work Knightley.

The film is directed spot on and this is the first Morten Tyldum film that I've watched from him, yeah he did some other films in the past but I never going to watch them (Just being honest) He got the drama right, he got the relationship between Benedict and Knightley right and I think this director is going to go off and do some (I'm predicting here) some fantastic work of movies in the future.

The writing has well is the soul of this movie. The director is the heart of the film, the actors are the veins of this movie. The writing to me perfectly got the main character pain and deep inside torture of he his secret of being gay and you know back then he would be sent to prison for that, so you really feel the hard work on not just solving the Enigma code but to hind who he truly is.

For issues I haven't really got much to be honest. But is this a film that I will watch again and again, no not really. You may watch this loads of times more than me but to me this isn't a re-watchable film to me.

But Overall The Imitation Game is brilliantly well done film with fantastic performances and a good story.

Someones secret life, both professionally and personally was brought to the screen in such a beautiful manor.
Beyond the heroism, beyond the struggle, I think this film strikes cords in the most convinced human beings. It gives the performance of the year for me from Benedict, not just becomes of who Allan Turing was, but because he showcases despair and human suffering so truthfully.
Having said that, the film lacks in some places and in moments where the World was in need of it moving forward, we are faced with a machine that simply won't give out the desired results in time.
An award winning film, that offers a delicate and fragile story, told at the most precise moment in our history.

Cumberbatch may have easily won an Oscar this year if it wasn't the close race that it was. Alan Turing is one of the most important men to ever walk the Earth but really before this film most people would have been unaware of his achievements. Cumberbatch does an incredible job of portraying such a complex and genius character and he develops beautifully throughout the movie. Keira Knightley also has one of the best female performances of 2014 with this role. Of course, it's not a movie for everyone. Despite it being about World War II, there's hardly any violence, so action movie fans probably won't like it. People who can't handle sad movies should steer clear of this movie, as the story is literally the saddest I've ever seen. Also, comedy folks, this isn't your movie. Anyone else, however, should see this movie and applaud Benedict Cumberbatch's superb performance as the troubled math teacher Alan Turing. I usually don't review movies, but I felt like I had to for this one, it was so good. Expand

The World War II hero, Alan Turing (played magnificently by Benedict Cumberbatch) goes through life as a mathematical genius and extraordinary cryptologist who struggles socially but ultimately triumphs by breaking the German secret code known as Enigma.

Directed by Morten Tyldum and co-written by Andrew Hodges (based on his book “Alan Turing: The Enigma”) and Graham Moore, this film was a fantastic team work effort where all the players – Screenplay, Directing, Acting (Keira Knightley was great), even Costumes and Makeup were pure perfection.

I especially enjoyed the flashbacks of Alan as a child where you see how tormented and brutally bullied he was by classmates. You feel deeply for him as he comes to realize he has feelings for a boy in his class but only to loose him to a sad much too early death.

Later after the war is over again you feel so sad for this war hero as he is ultimately accused of a devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality. To learn that the government could actually force men to take hormone therapy to “cure” them was sickening to me. At the end, I wanted to cheer out loud when they scrolled on the screen how Elizabeth, her majesty reversed his record and awarded him posthumously (he ultimately committed suicide) an award for his incredible part in shortening the war and saving millions of lives.
Please see this movie as you will learn more about World War II and the efforts made to end it and to also learn how a great man was treated at a time in our history where our understanding about sexual orientation was grossly misguided.

Cumberbatch is absolutely brilliant in his interpretation and Tyldum's slightly altered reality is so well constructed that you don't even doubt it being correct. The casting in general was excellently done and there was a very special team chemistry between the members. "The Imitation Game" is the story of Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician who almost singlehandedly broke the infamous Nazi Enigma code, and thus helped thwart attacks on military and civilian shipping and important continental battles.
While the Polish initially set the groundwork for the code breaking with a machine called the "bombe", Turing advanced on the design and tragically had to remain anonymous, along with his team for security reasons. Benedict Cumberbatch turns in a great performance as Turing, an egotistical anti-social professor and closet homosexual, which in Britain at that time could result in prison.
While historical purists chafe at the nit picking details, it's still a very compelling, intelligent movie that grips you from the start and brings the accomplishments of Turing's work into fresh focus. He tragically died of what is considered suicide by cyanide, although some think it could have been an accident during one of his experiments when he inhaled cyanide fumes while working on a project.
He was found guilty of homosexual behavior and ordered to undergo inhumane drug therapy that was designed to basically destroy his sex drive and chemically castrate him.
In death though Turing was finally accorded the hero's acclaim he deserved, and today is considered one of the first great pioneers of the modern computer.
"The Imitation Game" is a brilliant film, and a great relief from the load of hit movies out there right now.

The story isSetting in World War II, this attempt to decode the Nazis's Enigma machine is somewhat an unusual surprisingly successful biography to present the remarkable life of an unknown person who have worked hard to change the world. The story is basically divided into three parts - life during young age, carrying out mission and after the end of war, in which the life of Alan Turing, who holds a strong belief of atheism, is beautifully crafted thanks to the great scores from Alexandre Desplat even though there are moments of jumping around from year-to-year in narrating. The powerful performance from Benedict Cumberbatch alone in portraying the awkwardness, triumphant, arrogant, strangeness, both physical and mental struggling of this notorious protagonist and at the same time well supported by great delivery from the supporting cast have elevated this epic material entirely. It is not just about history of winning the war, but this game is actually an imitation of life full with thoughtful dialogues and pioneering work that tells the foundation of computerisation which overall place this biopic a great position to deserve an Oscar nomination. Though that is does hinder the movie, the movie is still one of the best movies in 2014. Like I stated before, it's smart and it knows it. First off, the obvious. Benedict Cumberbatch. His performance almost made me cry like a little girl. It made my eyes moist, and that’s something that just a good actor has never done in a long time. One of the best performances of the entire year. The rest of the casting were also good, Keira Knightley mainly, but Benedict Cumberbatch was just excellent. Now, the story. I don’t like that much the fact that they changed some things from the real one to make the plot interesting enough for the big screen. But besides that, the story is fun, entertaining, intriguing, emotional, original and is excellently told. And it’s not only the story, but the fact that it’s something that really happened and nobody new is something the movie shows in a very good way. It’s very well directed, the movie looks beautiful, and is capable of capturing the true essence of the real story of Alan Turing’s.
For flaws, I didn’t like when the movie showed some flashbacks, remembering Alan Turing’s youth. At the end, those flashbacks get to be important in the story, but before the ending those are boring and only make you wish to get back to the World War II things.

This film is nothing but propaganda about a pathetic waste of money and a failiure . Anyone with any maths or logic solving abilities would have applied a 650 year old principle. If Alan Turin had looked at the problem for what it was, the code could have been cracked with a widely available at the time piece of equipment very quickly sat on the toilet. Occams Razor is the most basic logic principle that any supposed mathmetician would have applied first but what do you expect from Cambridge or Oxford University other than lies and false claims. I wouldnt even watch a film on TV with Keira Knightley or anything associated with her or the Benedict dork in as I find them both very distasteful given that they are trying to make money out of glamourising a creepy failiure of a man whose ineptness cost people their lives and also cost a lot of money. I didn't know why it took me so long but since I generally don't rush these things it didn't worry me. Writing a review I always try to be original, use my own words, share my own opinion, and try to make memorable with a couple of paragraphs. The Imitation Game is an interesting film with a great cast and brilliant performances but I'll get into that later.

Watching the film the narrative jumped out at me and I couldn't pin point why. It starts off with the declaration of war and progressively goes back and forth from 1945 to the 1950s with little flashbacks on Alan Turing's boyhood peppering the narrative. No matter the time periods the constant in all this is Turing, it is his story after all. I guess, I didn't understand why the story was told that way. I mean it's a compelling story, so to me the flash-forwards to the 1950s - his post WWII life - are almost obsolete. The boyhood aspect of the flashbacks were important and interesting because they helped understand how complex Alan Turing was and gave him depth, as for the flash-forwards I had no clue.

Of course, the movie would have felt a bit boring without the flash-forwards but it wouldn't have hurt it. Then it occurred to me that without them the British Government looks seriously bad. The man saved 14 Millions of lives - like they've reminded us in the film - but they still prosecuted him for consensual homosexual sex, sorry I meant "public indecency". I am baffled by this, I am no LGBT activist but injustice still rattles me. Maybe more so because if this war Hero's "kink" was little girls, I get the sense that he, somehow, would have eluded prosecution. And that investigator, who looks consumed by shame and guilt, once he realized what he's done, does not shake my belief that things would have gone differently for Turing if it was anything other than homosexuality. I may have gotten too far with this but you get my point.

As for the movie, it has all the cultural aspects of this era, by which I mean misogyny and homophobia, no seriously it's also funny, riddled with humor like most British movies are and it is because of Cumberbatch's portrayal of Turing. The loner, introverted, socially awkward genius makes for comedy gold. Turing's interactions with people around him and their reactions to his "uniqueness" made me laugh throughout the film. This might sound like Sherlock, also brilliantly portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, but I did not once felt like he was playing the same character although, I'll admit that the two are alike. Which brings me to the immense talent that Cumberbatch showed in The Imitation Game, he not only portrayed a similar character to the one that internationally brought him to stardom but he did it with enough flair and finesse to give Alan Turing a voice and singularity.

Unlike some biopic about great men, the supporting cast in The Imitation Game was strong and memorable, they all had their moments that gave them layers and also elevated the film. Among those people, is Keira Knightley, on who I had lost hope a long time ago, she showed skills and cunning in this movie for a character that easily could have felt flat and forgettable. She's borderline **** hag but with a good script and some acting skills she did well. The same skills - why do I feel like it's an insult to them? - are shown by the talented Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard & of course Alex Lawther.

Morten Tyldum delivered a culturally relevant, fun dramatic film. This man knows how to get you emotionally involved and takes you smoothly through one of the great injustice of our time.

It's not that the story isn't good, or shouldn't have been told. There's loads of potential everywhere you look here. Cumberbatch has pretty much been bred for the role of Alan Turing over the last couple years, practicing and perfecting his "not really Asperger's" type genius anti-social with just the right amount of heart of gold underneath.

It's that every aspect of this movie seems indifferent. The boringly shot compositions and superficial character depth. The well-meaning for its own sake without being earned (I'm talking about the tragedy of chemical castraction Turing faces for being a homosexual). This feels like a CliffsNotes version of the story, told by a tenured professor thinking of golfing and retirement. Nothing really adds up here. It's a shame.

The Imitation game is a spy thriller set within World War II which follows Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) and other mathematicians as they attempt to break the infamous Enigma code that the Germans were using.

Cumberbatch does put on a superb performance as the mathematician Alan Turing. Throughout Cumberbatch shows true passion for playing this character causing much emotion when necessary but some comedic elements as well. From time to time you feel for Turing as he makes his attempts to crack Enigma. Not only does Cumberbatch provide emotion but the other cast members are at the same level. Joan Clarke (Kiera Knightley) the female member of the group is as allows you to see such a strong bond developing between the two of them making them a great pair when they are on-screen together. The bond also extends to the other mathematicians like Hugh Alexander (Matthew Goode) and John Cairncross (Allen Leech) which incites a sort of family between them expressing not only the darker moments but some of the comedic elements from time to time.

The story itself was incredible and kept me interested and engaged throughout. The film does put the emphasis on the Enigma code causing an awareness of how important the code really is. This emphasis does impact the story greatly in a positive way. During the film there are some extremely emotive scenes that envelope the audience die to the horrors of war and the importance of Enigma. The pacing was well done allowing time for not only the codebreaking itself but allow development of the characters and to see the changes of their understanding to not only Turing but to the code Enigma itself. There is a small part I did trip up on and did not understand however upon re-watching the film and investigating further it had become clearer. The most shocking part I found was the ending which makes me feel sad but more knowledgeable at the same time knowing what had happened within World War II and the factor that Turing played in.

In all the Imitation game was an excellent film depicting the behind the scenes of the spy network. It was great to see such emphasis being placed on the codebreaking rather than action which most spy films are affiliated with. The story of the code breaking is enhanced even further through all the actors. They all put on stellar performances exerting emotion throughout which furthers the importance of gaining the knowledge of the Germans. The Imitation game is a brilliant film and must be seen at any costs. It is worth your money and time.
