This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw The Human Surge on dvd last night and I loved it. I was turned on to this film by Cinema Scope's (Canadian film mag) top ten list for 2017. What I found so fascinating about this film was the way the film looked. There are many many shots that are so beautifully composed, use of color, constant camera motion. Also how modern technology has entered the lives of everyone in the film. The people in the film are everyday characters that we all know. The main character of the film has lost a not-so-great job and doesn't really seem to be trying to get another one. We've all been there, right? The use of color (um, FANTASTIC) and the way the shots are composed and the constant moving camera reminded me some of Kaili Blues, if you've seen that. Although modern technology has entered the lives of everyone in the film, it hasn't really made their lives any better. It seems to be just another hoop that we'll have to jump through in order to live. One scene shows a guy taking a piss into an antheap, and then the camera shows ants doing ant work on the colony. They are not too different from us, right? How much of what we do is just rote mechanical behavior.
I loved this film and hope this review encourages you to give it a chance.
