In my opinion it is the best of the trilogy, Smaug is graphically well rendered and is a mysterious and interesting villain.

You get your money’s worth from Jackson, who still proves to be one of the tippy top action directors working.

I can only think of one expression for this, cheap.
You can tell that the film was produced quickly and did not cost much money.
No comparison, not even close to Lord of the Rings.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Second part of the second trilogy, 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' keeps a similar artistic direction as the first episode of the series. The humor is more forced than ever with effortless and clichƩd dialogues that try desperately to be quotable. The acting is particularly poor, as if almost all the characters were trying to be as unemotional as possible. I found Thorin (Richard Armitage), Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) and Kili (Aidan Turner) trying to be as uninvolved as possible here. Fortunately Bilbo (Martin Freeman) saves it all with his incredible and nuanced acting. The romance is terribly tasteless, cheesy, predictable and poorly written and exposed.

We get to know the characters better, but it's not always for the better: Smaug appears to be much dumber than expected and described previously, Gandalf is useless and can't help but make the worst decisions, and Azog spends all his precious time riding around, searching and finding no one. Dwarves spend their time trying to be stealthy or quick to escape situations but come on, we all know those actions are what dwarves are worst at doing! Their overall choices and behaviors don't match the fantasy lore at all. There are way too many factors depending on luck to help the plot move on. Thorin clearly drove me mad as he tries to be charismatic, loud and royal during numerous scenes. Did we really see him navigate a river of molten gold on an iron wheelbarrow? Seriously? The ring and its powers are overused and always (and I mean always) help Bilbo to get out of many tricky situations.

Some of the special effects are pretty bad, although there are some wonderful landscapes here and there, as well as many easter eggs that deepen the story.

In conclusion, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" is more a visual adventure than an interesting story, as inconsistencies and senseless scenes are overrepresented. The ending clif-hanger is predictable and as forced as many other major scenes.

Still very good, but I found 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' to be a step below the preceding 2012 release.

The conclusion is what affects it the most, in my opinion. It isn't anything bad, but it goes on for too long - yet the ending itself comes out of nowhere a little. It's iffily crafted, with the entertainment value not enough to cover it up. Again, nothing anywhere near terrible... just not as great as I wanted/expected.

I also kinda wanted more scenes with Martin Freeman (Bilbo) across the midway point. I like the focus on Richard Armitage (Thorin) & Co. but I felt there needed to be more with the lead - and with Ian McKellen (Gandalf), for that matter.

I've led with my negatives first, but I have many positives too. I enjoyed the scenes in Esgaroth with Luke Evans (Bard), all of the stuff there looks awesome. The character of Tauriel, played by Evangeline Lilly, is cool. Orlando Bloom (Legolas) remains fun to watch. Everything else, including the score, is very nicely done - as anticipated.

Love the end credits song ("I See Fire") by Ed Sheeran, by the way. Not quite as grand and great as "May It Be" from LOTR, but it's pretty close!

So ... script that begins to wobble more than the first film and in fact I start to worry about the final film ... Until I arrive in the city and in Erebor, the plot is boring and devoid of the typical magic of the first film. What destroys this film for me is the presence of Orlando Bloom with Legolas, which is senseless and leads this film to be a fan-film and not a sacred monster of cinema. The soundtrack is not bad but it begins to decay. On the bright side of this film is Benedict Cumberbatch doing a crazy (!) Job for Smaug. The scene inside the mountain is really beautiful, and actually this is what brings my rating from 6 (just enough) to 7. Expand

But it does seem to drag from moment to moment, but equally gives us an insight on what this trilogy could've been had it just been 1 or 2 films. i found myself connecting with this one more than the first due to the power of a love dynamic that brought a new found life in this story, Tolkien never intended on exploring. And the Dragon, voiced virvaciously by Benedict Cumberbatch, elevated the movie to an unforgettable level.
But in the end, it's just a shade better than the first being the most intruging part of the story, but still carries the same issues in length and over-conveyed character exposition that makes it lose it's mysticism. But a fine sequel nevertheless.

Even though the plot is easy to follow, it's still epic, has a great storyline, and a lot of character development absent from "The Lord of the Rings." Giant spiders, Orcs, a great dragon, a Necromancer revealed to be the Great Eye of Mor-I mean, Dol Guldur, really keeps Bilbo and Thorin's hands full. The Great Eye is a terrifying figure depicted as a mighty eyeball wreathed in perpetually emanating fire that commands bloodthirsty monsters and tortures and cages trespassing fools. The Hobbit is a wonderful book but it simply doesn't have enough content to be spread between three movies. Each movie doesn't really tell a cohesive story on its own and while I judged the Lord of the Rings as a whole because it improves an already amazing experience, The Hobbit has to be judged as a whole because the movies make no sense in any other method of viewing. Even still they hit middling at best and never truly great.

However, after the hard failure of the first film, with obvious CGI exaggerations, miserably basic cinematography and several flaws concerning actors, it was hard to do worse with a millionaire budget. Thus, "Desolation of Smaug" is a general improvement without doing miracles. In this film, the company of Thorin Oakenshield finally reaches the lonely mountain, after some difficulties with the elves and a forced visit to Lake Town. However, increasingly powerful forces maneuver in the shadows and covet the gold of the dwarfs without them knowing.

I can not comment on how Peter Jackson and his team adapt the original material of J.R.R. Tolkien because I never read it. The actors were well. Ian McKellen plays Gandalf without much news to add. Martin Freeman continues to look like a solid Bilbo and plays his part without major flaws, as can be said of Richard Armitage (Thorin). This actor does an excellent performance, showing the gradual change of his character, more and more selfish and insensitive. Orlando Bloom returns to the role of Legolas, heir to the Elven throne, but it seems much more impersonal, mechanical and hard than it was in LOTR. Evangeline Lilly looks excellent as the sensitive Tauriel, just like Lee Pace, flawless in the role of King Thranduil, whom the misfortune of the dwarfs never moves. Smaug, the dragon, is not represented by any actor, its an artificial creation, but its an well thought-out character with a cruel personality, selfish and true hatred of the dwarfs. The action scenes are plentiful but continues to suffer with incompetent cinematography and a lamentable abuse of special effects that make everything artificial, pointless and devoid of emotions. The soundtrack, created by Howard Shore, is powerful, impactful and meets the expectations of the public.

"Smaug's Desolation" is not necessarily bad, it's even better than the first film of the trilogy. But it still looks like a show-movie, full of background noise, impersonal, artificial and unable to reach the audience. The sense of danger, the emotion, all that made "Lord of the Rings" a successful trilogy, has disappeared and only comes at very precise scenes.

The desolation of this installment is the lack of growth of the film's protagonist, who is relegated to supporting player and foil for a visually impressive, but soulless CGI dragon. The crux of this film's problem lies in the decision of Jackson, Warner Brothers, New Line and MGM in turning a two-picture-at-best story into a generic action film which appeals to a broader demographic. The collaborators' decision to include appendix material isn't the problem - it provides welcome explanations for Gandalf's seemingly fairweather loyalty to the party. The problem is that new materials, specifically the romance and the politics are mundane and hamfisted. Much of the wonder of An Unexpected Journey and The Fellowship of the Ring are missing from The Desolation of Smaug. The accessibility of Tolkein's The Hobbit lies in the fact that it is a first person narrative. Unfortunately, due to the deep cynicism of the entertainment industry, in an effort to emulate other action film franchises, it has produced another generic e-ticket ride to nowhere.

Skip the full ticket price showing of this flick, catch a matinee and only pay extra for 3D if that's your thing.

From what I understand, Legolas was not in the book and this is made abundantly clear here when all of his scenes literally add nothing to the movie and the adventures of the dwarves or Gandalf. Heck, even Gandalf's side journey (which is in the book) adds nothing here to this story. It just serves as distraction from what the movie is allegedly building up to, only to then cut off and not do anything until the third movie. Film is not television. Cliff hangers should not be allowed like this. In film, it makes the product feel entirely unfinished and prevents the film from being able to standalone from the rest of the franchise. Instead, The Desolation of Smaug willingly plays in the problems faced by many middle entry stories in that it is neither the beginning or the end. Even worse, the film repeatedly does shoutouts to Lord of the Rings. Again, I know it is a prequel, but I also know that every little shoutout it does is not in the book. More than anything, these moments feel as though they are simply trying to garner goodwill based on the success of the Lord of the Rings films. Unfortunately for Desolation of Smaug, this does not work and the end product is simply a thoroughly average film that may entertain at times, but has serious pacing issues and drags from beginning to end. Continuing the story of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he, Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and a band of dwarves travel across Middle Earth to reach the Lonely Mountain, a former dwarven city that 60 years previous had been claimed by a dragon called Smaug. Now with the mountain in sight, the journey begins it's final stages as the group of travellers travel through enchanted forests, elf & human settlements and ultimately come face to face with Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) himself.
The Desolation of Smaug is easy to summarise in one sentence; great opening, solid ending, wobbly middle. DoS opens with an action scene closely followed by a tense and mind bending scene set in an enchanted forest, however upon arriving at the elven settlement the film takes a nose dive into boredom for over an hour until we eventually reach the Lonely Mountain. Even then, the scenes with Bilbo & Smaug are far greater than the scenes that cut away to show what the rest of the group in either the human settlement or outside the mountain are doing.
Much like An Unexpected Journey, DoS is filmed in 3D and at 48FPS and personally the film uses them to much greater strengths than AUJ ever did. However the problem with crappy CGI is still present in DoS as it was in AUJ. Smaug is the exception to this statement however, being one of the most fearsome and highly detailed creatures in the entire Peter Jackson Middle Earth saga.
Desolation of Smaug is a solidly entertaining fantasy action film, though it again fails to meet the expectations set by the Lord of the Rings trilogy and barely surpasses the previous film in terms of quality. Plus was there any point of Legolas in this movie other than to provide pointless fan service and a below average sub-plot with little depth or meaning to the overall story? No...I din't think so.

The movie adopts a frenetic pace that captures the viewer whilst also exploring welcomed new fantastical themes within Middle Earth. It is clear that Peter Jackson has taken a much more colourful approach in his story telling of Middle Earth. The film never reaches the emotionally gripping and dark aspects of the Lord of the Rings, and rather takes a more vibrant and fun route. Whilst this provides a great film for the most part, it once again does not live up to the ridiculously high expectations set up by the Lord of the Rings. A good film nevertheless, ending on a painful cliffhanger that sets up the third film expertly. Expand

This isn't necessarily aSpecial effects have always played an important role in Peter Jackson's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's books but, with The Desolation of Smaug, the middle chapter of The Hobbit movie trilogy, they take center stage. This isn't necessarily a positive development because it comes at the expense of things many film-goers value, like character development and narrative thrust. Filmed and exhibited primarily in 3-D with lengthy computer-created action sequences, The Desolation of Smaug often looks and feels more like a video game than a motion picture. There are things to like about the second Hobbit film - the director's vision of Middle Earth is as beguiling as ever - but the bloating that was a problem with An Unexpected Journey is an even bigger issue here.

The Desolation of Smaug is too long and too visually busy to be loved by any but a die-hard fan. Purists - those who treat Tolkien's written word with Biblical reverence - may be horrified. A lot of the running around that consumes the running time bears no resemblance to anything in the books. Although Jackson doesn't change the core story, he treats it like an outline. Less than 50% of what's on screen during the course of The Desolation of Smaug comes from The Hobbit. The rest is culled from Tolkien's notes and Jackson's imagination.

One evident improvement over An Unexpected Journey relates to pacing. This movie doesn't bog down the way the previous one did. It shifts from one action sequence to the next, sometimes without taking time to breathe. Unfortunately, Jackson's overreliance on computer-generated imagery during many of these high-octane sequences diminishes the experience. Action works best when there's an identification with the characters and a real sense of danger. Those elements are absent here. Many of The Desolation of Smaug's high profile sequences feel either like elaborate video game cut-scenes or templates for an amusement ride. An example is the barrel escape, which feels like a hyper-real animated sequence. By spending so much time extending action sequences (there's one in the bowels of The Lonely Mountain that lasts for 30 minutes), Jackson is forced to end the film on a cliffhanger. It's an awkward stopping point that may anger some viewers.

Admittedly, the dragon looks great - quite an achievement, especially when seen in its full glory on the big screen. Benedict Cumberbatch provides Smaug's voice (giving him an opportunity to interact with Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman) with appropriate gravitas. Still, what was a high point becomes distended for no purpose other than to highlight the technical proficiency of the special effects wizards. The movie's look is odd; color is so desaturated during the second half that there are times when The Desolation of Smaug appears monochromatic. And Howard Shore's normally praiseworthy score is disappointingly flat.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings will welcome the return of Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Although he is not mentioned by name in Tolkien's book, this is an example of effective artistic license. The same can be said of the inclusion of Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), a creation of screenwriters Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. Tauriel at least gives The Desolation of Smaug a female presence and her character arc, limited though it may be, is intriguing. The best new addition to The Desolation of Smaug is Bard the Lake Town hero (Luke Evans), whose story has been expanded beyond the one provided by Tolkien.

As spectacles go, The Desolation of Smaug delivers, at least in its ability to provide eye candy. It fails to excite on a deeper level, however, lacking the emotional impact delivered by The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. It's epic fantasy for those who thinks the term means monsters, chases, fights, and little else. One can argue that it's unfair to judge the middle chapter of a trilogy until all three volumes are available, but Jackson hasn't done an especially good job of making The Desolation of Smaug work as a stand-alone project. Like the dragon's treasure hoard, it's pretty and vast but lacking in substance.

No doubt the best out of the 3 Hobbit movies that were released. Smaug's voice was intimidating and was done perfectly by Benedict Cumberbatch. The pace of the movie was vastly improved from the last movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Peter Jackson adaptations of Tolkien's Middle Earth books have always made epic viewing, even if often receiving mixed reviews from Tolkien enthusiasts and film critics alike. The Desolation of Smaug is no different, and in this aspect, I guess no one expected it to be.
It has all the plus points of it's Peter jackson siblings; Stunning and atmospheric scenery and backdrops, generally strong character acting, interesting story and depth. But it also has all the minus points of the previous films; Added and often irrelevant storylines and characters, poor scripting in some scenes and over the top CGI, not to mention a few hammy attempts at humour thrown in for bad measure.
Unfortunately, Jackson seems to have expanded on the negatives rather than the positives in this film.
The plot now deviates hugely from the original works of Tolkien in places; so much so that it is difficult to regard this as an adaptation, more a Jackson interpretation. We also have characters such as Legolas taking up a lot of screen time and stealing scenes, when they were barely mentioned in the book.
Tauriel is an example of a character who has been entirely created for the purposes of the film. Needless to say, as a character she doesn't work and the scenes involving her are needless additions to the plot.
One of the film's major triumphs is it's recreation of Smaug; Brilliantly animated, menacing and superbly voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, But even his scenes are someone spoiled when the storyline deviates from the book strongly once again. I could also go into the scenes involving Gandalf and Sauron at Dol Goldur, but I won't. Just to say that although interesting, they also didn't appear in the book....
So that's it then - if you like over the top CGI, daft battle scenes and didn't read the book then you'll love this. Otherwise, it's an entertaining but slightly disappointing stab at the work of a literary genius. I hoped for more from Peter Jackson as a film maker, but didn't necessarily expect it.

I'll just do a short review for this. FramingI'll just do a short review for this. Definitely the best out of the 3, with the best pacing, and more characters getting to do things for themselves and not just being there (like dwarves just standing doing nothing in other films). Framing is a bit off as well (dragon stutters in one shot). The film was great as it had 3 main focus points in the film to distinguish itself nicely: 1st half make the dwarfs the main focus, making a bit more character development, the 2nd half being focused on bilbo and the excellent encounter he has with smaug (favourite scene easily!). Then the sub plot is gandalf going to find out what is happening at Don Guldor. This one was as close as it came to the LOTR trilogy, but still just missed it's quality. A slightly darker tone than the previous film and just overall made far better. In retrospect, they could've done this trilogy in two films to miss out all the bull **** they have! Expand

The questAn Unexpected Journey eased us into the story of Bilbo Baggins which did have merits. The Desolation of Smaug takes a different path and throws us in amongst it all, which makes it a more significant and more entertaining chapter. The quest to the Lonely Mountain continues and concludes in epic fashion. The story is breathlessly told just as any great fantasy story should be. The lack of quantitative source material begins to become a positive in the second instalment, as the film feels well paced and appropriately long. The pacing of the film allows it to flow well which enhances the story's presentation. As a result, the plot never feels stop-go or overly congested like the LOTR trilogy did. Nor does it feel too bare like An Unexpected Journey. The Desolation of Smaug is home to well paced plot development, many strong characters and ever present danger which is complimented by some very convincing antagonists. All of which allow for a thoroughly entertaining and impressively compelling film. Expand

This second installment of The Hobbit is greater in almost every aspect. Unfortunately that does not include CGI.

This is the second installment of the new trilogy in our beloved Middle-earth. It quite spectacular when you see the extended version, and you realize how big the franchise really is. It got so much extra material and things that really connect all the Middle-earth films together. The biggest thing with this movie is that it got much more action than in An Unexpected Journey, especially when it comes to Smaug and ā€œThe Necromancerā€. Some of the action sequences though, are boring. There’s just nothing unique with them. But there are much more unique and epic scenes, that I can tell you! Therefor it feels much more like Lord of the Rings. The plot is very entertaining and last act of the film is superb. You really want to see the continuation. The characters in The Desolation of Smaug are very good, and combined with an awesome cast like in An unexpected Journey: do I really have high expectations of The Battle of The five Armies. But the thing with this trilogy is that the CGI is very odd. In this film are the CGI very good when it comes to Orcs and Smaug. But at the same time is there much terrible and awful CGI when it comes to natural objects. It didn’t feel real at all. There’s also a big mix of CGI and real recorded scenes. They aren’t working well together. There are much dark scenes; witch didn't work well while using 3D-glasses. The computer-generated light that’s included in some parts in the movie is also terrible.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is much better than the previous film in this new trilogy. The action is greater, better music and a lot more LotR-feeling. But the movie is a bit slow at some places, and the CGI are just terrible sometimes.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug gets an 8/10.

See What Happens When Greedy People & Corporations Sink Their Teeth Into A Great Story! Sorry! But I've lost my patience! Watching The Hobbit was quite demoralizing! Unfortunately, The Hobbit has been turned into a commodity like toothpaste and underarm deodorant! There is ZERO justification for turning the Hobbit into a trilogy, if you are going to drag out the story and do such a poor job. The Tolkien family - who I assume controls the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's works - should be ashamed of themselves. They could have insisted in putting the story first instead of letting director Jackson create such a vapid and mediocre second Hobbit film. It's really quite sad! How can a director who made 3 masterpieces out of Lord of the Rings stoop so low and turn The Hobbit into something so trite and empty that, at times, it's like watching a Saturday morning breakfast cereal commercial on T.V.?

I badly wanted to like this movie. At least the first movie of The Hobbit trilogy had some interesting moments despite its many flaws. But now the Hobbit has been turned into a cartoon with mostly boring two-dimensional, cardboard characters. The acting was so poor at times it ruined the illusion. But worst of all, there's very little heart, unlike the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is the epitome of passion and adventure and good storytelling.

I also think part of the problem is that director Jackson is trying to turn The Hobbit into another The Lord of the Rings, which is quite stupid. They are very different stories. From what I have read, Tolkien wrote The Hobbit essentially for fun and wasn't even going to have it published until his friend, the great writer, C. S. Lewis convinced him otherwise. The Tolkien family should have went with a different director. Since when does one man own a storytelling giant like Tolkien?

Then I was forced to watch this awful movie in 3D or drive elsewhere. I noticed about 30 seconds of special 3D affects. How can that be called a 3D movie? I call it a rip-off and I wish the Federal government would call such a claim fraud, so filmmakers would think twice about ripping off the public!

Hollywood pulled the same stretching-out-the-story-stunt with Harry Potter, but at least I was smart enough to never have watched the last film. I eventually became so disgusted, I could care less what happened to Harry Potter. The same storytelling destruction non-sense has now captured the Hobbit. When I started hoping that Smaug would snap Bilbo Baggins and the King of the Dwarfs in a half, I realized I'm now done with all things Hobbit movie related!!

Its predecessor suffered a bit because it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a scene-for-scene retelling of the novel or a looser, action-oriented adaptation. This film resides firmly in the second camp, and everything works better for it. For example, the escape from the Woodland Realm is every bit as over the top as the last film's escape from Goblin-town, but it doesn't feel so out of place, so it's easier just to kick back and enjoy the ride. The changes from the book once again mostly work, and in this case actually make more sense. Bard the Bargeman might not be as awesome as Bard the Bowman, at least not yet, but he is much more fleshed out, and the film finally gives the Company a decent reason for needing a burglar. I could have done without the dwarf-dragon battle at the end, I really liked the addition of Tauriel.

My biggest objection continues to be the over-reliance on CGI. Make no mistake, the Smaug of the title is every bit as incredible as I ever imagined he could be, but decision to animate Azog's son doesn't work out so well. I understand that it was a late decision to give what was originally a live performance a computer makeover, and it shows in how unrealistic he looks next to Daddy.

Overall, this is another fine addition to Jackson's Middle-earth saga, expanding on the previous film while avoiding its pacing pitfalls.

There was a great cast : Ian McKellen ! Martin Freeman ! Richard Armitage!
Peter Jackson was the director of The Lord of the Rings ; King Kong ; Lovely Bones...
There was an amazing composer for the soundtrack : Howard Shore...

So ? What happened ? The 3D is useless, the picture is often illegible. The set smells the green screen and the numeric with full nose. And, I know a movie can be brilliant without respecting the work of origin but : Legolas ? Seriously ? What the hell is he doing there if it's not to make a useless allusion to Lord of the Rings...
To my mind, here is that is that movie : a far too long useless allusion to Lord of the Rings, a work which suffered from the Peter Jackson's numerical megalomania for, in the final, a result close to the disgusting.
Without forgetting the useless sub-plots added to the screenplay (an emancipation towards the book, okay, why not, but from there to change all the weft it...) ; some strokes of humour which completely fall flat ; the completely ridiculous look of the dwarfs and, naturally, unspeakable campaign of communication and advertisement made around films (planes, immense sculptures in stations and.), amounting to a degree of nonsense which exceeds the imagination !!
In brief : Much Ado About Nothing !

I try not to rate anything too low, because thing has to be something that you point to and say, "This was good, right?"
Wrong, because The Desolation of Smaug was horrible start to finish. Where The Hobbit was a slap in the face to Tolkien, TDoS was a burning bag of crap left at his doorstep. I went into this movie with low expectations and only 15 minutes in realized that even so I had expected too much.

First, why it's not a good movie:
They do a very poor job of portraying the time frame of this movie and by you end you think to yourself, "Oh, they were only three days from the mountain including jail time, I wonder why they make this out to be such an undertaking?" because in the book they took Months!
The Characters are impossible to relate to as each one has not had a proper time frame to develop, so you end up with a cast of 15 or so completely forgettable characters.
This movie is essentially four staged areas with nothing in between and ends up feeling like a cobbled together selection of short stories that don't connect properly.
Wacky Willys Barrel ride down the river scene is one of the worst displays of directing excess I have seen since Micheal Bays Transformer movies.
The script is poor/rushed with no memorable conversations or lines in two and half hours of run time.

Second, why it's a horrible adaptation:
Significant, memorable scenes from the book (the introduction of the dwarves to Beorn, the pursuit of the Elven feasts in the forest, the true ending to Bilbo's conversation with Smaug) have been replaced with horrible scens that aren't in the book (Filli chatting up Elven lady in Dungeon, Orcs attacking Laketown, Dwarves battling Smaug).
The ring, which was asleep in the book and had no effect on characters apart from turning Bilbo invisible, is now awake and wrecking Bilbo. Add to that every evil character in the movie basically proclaiming the coming of Sauron even though it's supposed to be a secret. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the Tolkien universe would know that this is completely incorrect and creates continuity issues. Why does Sauron not sense the ring is in the forest right beside him? Why does his eye not appear when Bilbo puts on the ring? Why do elves and men not react appropriately knowing that Sauron is back but not at full strength?
Upon close examination, not a single scene or event has been left unaltered from the book which means that this movie is not an adaptation, but rather some loose tribute using similar characters and settings but retaining nothing of the original.

I give the one for the excellent casting of Cumberbatch as Smaug as well as the CG on the dragon. (The rest of the scene is complete garbage as the idea of the Dragon sensing the ring and Bilbo removing it is a complete deviation.)

Save yourself from this and just rent the Trilogy again.

If he'd done it in a way that was mature it still would have been barely acceptable, but the mediocre and degradingly juvenile way in which he did it here was really in low taste. It's a huge improvement over the already great first movie. The characters are just as enjoyable as always, and the story does an excellent job of providing it's own story whilst showing us events that lead up to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Overall I was blown away. I only have one minor complaint, and that is that the over-the-top action and goofy moments this movie provides is at odds with what I have come to expect from the Tolkien universe. It's not bad, it's just that some times it can feel out of place. Still this is one excellent movie, and one that any Middle Earth fan will love. I do recommend that newcomers experience the first Hobbit before jumping into this one though. I give the movie a near-perfect score of 9.9/10. Expand

A whole lot of extra and, IMHO, unnecessary stuff to get three films out of one short book... However, worth $1.26 at Redbox but somewhat irritating if you loved the book... Too much like Lord of the Rings in tone and substance...

In "The Desolation of Smaug ," the fairy-tale atmosphere of the first was slowly dissolved, As the figure of the magician is to emerge in the future Sauron , the symbol of pure evil .
Despite having a script slightly weaker than the first episode , which was almost poetic , is much more convincing in terms of narrative and this time the scenes and additional characters are not at all out of place.
Doubled the action scenes , the fights ( some a little ' forced I admit) , but above all the characters, the story has not in fact a single thread as in the first chapter , but it follows the fortunes of different groups of characters .
Although this film has taken a little 'space Bilbo , who was the protagonist in the first , this new feature has helped make " The Desolation of Smaug " more like the old timeless Jackson trilogy , which also had a multitude of characters and situations.
A praise is due to the realization of Smaug do it , which is really something fantastic, impressive , magnificent, superior.
In my opinion this movie had all the papers in order to reach the level of the first three masterpieces by Jackson, but unfortunately was hit from the soundtrack (which despite being epic is not remotely comparable to the work done by the old trilogy ) , and the script, which convinces , but not jaw-dropping .
I want to clarify that I have not read the book , so I can not comment on the film at 360 degrees, but the emotions that made me feel while watching were really intense , and at times I felt like I really go back to the first trilogy.

If your not a fan of the Hobbit series, don't waste your time watching this movie. It is by far the worse in the series.

If your a Hardcore Hobbit fan, this movie would have to be rated hypocrisy. This movie takes the way Disney changes stories to something unrecognizable, to whole new levels. Except Disney creates entertaining movies. At least half of the movie, has nothing to do with the actual Hobbit story.

My family and I had to laugh at how absurdly off this movie was. Half of the fun was making up more absurdly inaccurate Hobbit tales. Laughing at Jackson's "Desolation of the Hobbit" tale was the only reason I give this a 3.

The only reason to watch this movie, is because it uses more frame rates than most. This "Historical" factor, has to be the only reason "Movie fans" are rating it highly. However, most won't notice it, unless watching it on an absolutely top of the line system.

I mean seriously, Legolas and Tauriel (who should not even be there) literally stole the spotlight from Bilbo (keep in mind that the movie is called the HOBBIT), and further pushed a ultra-cheesy love story with Killi? I mean seriously?!

Second, as a movie itself, it is also awful. The pacing is off once more, and the special effects just make the movie look fake.

Congratulations Peter Jakcosn, aka the new George Lucas, for screwing up the prequels after making a brilliant LOTR Trilogy.

Although not bad, i dont get rid of the feeling that peter jackson and co. don“t do the Hobbit movies with the same love and detail like they did the Lord of the Ring Trilogy. This said, Desolation of smaug is not a bad movie
