The Hobbit was a children's book written by Tolkien for his kids and which was written before LOTR was even conceived. It was only after the popularity of this book and demand for a follow up that Tolkien set forth to write LOTR. It is supposed to be a fun and adventurous book and that is what the movie tries to present.
I watched the movie in IMAX 3D HFR 48fps and i loved the whole experience. I understand that this rendering of the cinema has many critics. It is important to note every cinematic experience relies on the suspension of disbelief. It is unfair to criticise the realistic quality of the backdrop of a fantasy flick. The HFR really adds to the quality of action sequences.
The performances in the movie were adequate and the movie was well set-up for the final instalment of the series.

Improvement in drama & action over the prior film. Cool new characters.
Great fight sequences, particularly the barrels set-piece.
My only complaint would be there's some odd pacing at times.
Overall much better than an unexpected journey.

Its predecessor suffered a bit because it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a scene-for-scene retelling of the novel or a looser, action-oriented adaptation. This film resides firmly in the second camp, and everything works better for it. For example, the escape from the Woodland Realm is every bit as over the top as the last film's escape from Goblin-town, but it doesn't feel so out of place, so it's easier just to kick back and enjoy the ride. The changes from the book once again mostly work, and in this case actually make more sense. Bard the Bargeman might not be as awesome as Bard the Bowman, at least not yet, but he is much more fleshed out, and the film finally gives the Company a decent reason for needing a burglar. I could have done without the dwarf-dragon battle at the end, I really liked the addition of Tauriel.

My biggest objection continues to be the over-reliance on CGI. Make no mistake, the Smaug of the title is every bit as incredible as I ever imagined he could be, but decision to animate Azog's son doesn't work out so well. I understand that it was a late decision to give what was originally a live performance a computer makeover, and it shows in how unrealistic he looks next to Daddy.

Overall, this is another fine addition to Jackson's Middle-earth saga, expanding on the previous film while avoiding its pacing pitfalls.

Aside from some ridiculous elven gymnastics it was very entertaining, didn't seem overly long, and set up everything well for the finale. I look forward to the holiday season next year to finish this thing off. My three young children enjoyed this movie greatly as well. This is a much more action packed movie than its predecessor, featuring an intense giant spider attack sequence in Mirkwood Forest, a thrilling river barrel chase sequence as the dwarves attempt to escape from Elvish captors, an intense battle between Gandalf and Sauron, and a non-stop battle with the Dragon Smaug at the end. As is to be expected, all technical credits are first rate, from the often brilliant special effects, to the stirring Howard Shore musical score, to the excellent use of High Frame Rate 3D. In addition, the film delivers some outstanding acting, with particularly good performances from Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Luke Evans as a well-developed and sympathetic Bard the Bowman. It is also great to see Orlando Bloom’s Legolas back in action, and despite the initial controversy, the addition of Evangilne Lilly as the female elf warrior Tauriel is a welcome addition, even if she does not appear in the book. The crowning achievement of the movie, however, is the Dragon Smaug (the best dragon ever portrayed on the silver screen) and his initial reveal in the ancient kingdom of Erebor is absolutely perfect. This is followed by an Indiana Jones style climax that ends in a real cliffhanger that might irritate some. For me it just means that the final movie, “The Hobbit: There And Back Again” will launch with an absolutely incredible action sequence. Like “The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers”, “Desolation” does not really have a beginning or an end, but like that brilliant movie, it is definitely one hell of a middle. Expand

I keep seeing reviewers comparing the Hobbit trilogy with the Lord of the Rings. While this is logically understandable, it should by no means factor into the Hobbit trilogy reviews. Why? Because firstly the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings have two distinctly different feels to them, both in terms of the movies and the books. The Hobbit is supposed to be more colorful, fantasy orientated and vivid than the later more darker Lord of the Rings. And so it is saddening to see that people use the Lord of the Rings, despite the stark contrast in the concepts, as a benchmark/basis to justify low ratings.

Which is why when I entered the cinema, and just as I sat down now to review this movie I try to dispel all the bias and judgments that may affect me beforehand. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was more exciting, action packed and energetic when compared to the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While the first film served to introduce the characters, set the pace of the film and slowly familarise the audience; it was expected that TDoS (The Desolation of Smaug) would quicken the tempo and pace, and by God it did just that! Fans of the first film will enjoy and welcome the countless fight scenes that are magical, well choreographed and don't feel over the top. If I had to pick one aspect of the film that I would of liked more, I probably would have liked to have seen more comical moments. Again, it is understandable why there were fewer comical laughs than the first film; mainly because of the quicker pace of the film, and the darker subplot; which meant that an excess of comedy would have made the sense of urgency prevalent throughout the film seem unrealistic.

Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug was brilliant. Sinister, yet somehow I found myself sympathising with the dragon when he retold his version of events that led to him occupying the Lonely Mountain.

While the first film lacks action and pace, it ultimately reinforces the need for character introduction. While the second film lacks the slower pace of the first film, it is squashed by the sheer speed of which this film moves at. Even the introduction to the movie, felt as though a sense of urgency was needed. Again, this is not a negative considering the fact the film is based through the middle/second half of the book.

Overall, brilliant film, didn't lose its way.... Slower in some scenes, but not necessary a bad aspect!

9/10.

I saw it in high-speed and 3d. Super well done but 2 things, the glasses are smaller than they used to be so you can see the rims which is distracting (but the crowd seems way cooler when the lights come up) and secondly the high-speed makes the production seem amateurish during the expositive scenes for some reason. So at the bar when they are talking it reminds me of a 80's British soap opera or a Canadian video production like Littlest Hobo. I think it exposes bad acting more. So a raised eyebrow by Gandalf looks kind of silly and deliberate or when Thorin notices bad guys it is super obvious like you can almost hear the director saying "look that way, then that way...". The increased action of this film over the previous one will surely get most people's attention and will probably make most younger people actually like it more. The special effects were also a bit better, in my opinion, and the dragon sequence at the end was just amazing. My only real probably with the film is the ending. That just isn't a good place to leave the film hanging. Obviously you should look at all of these films as one large movie broken up into three parts but the reality is that the third part won't be available to see until next year which makes this movie stand alone, in a sense. When considering that the entire movie seemed to be building to a climax that never occurs, it feels a little anticlimactic. Expand

The best scenes in my opinion were near the end and the scenes between Killi and the She-Elf. In my opinion, there was a bit too much CGI, I much prefer real sets but for the Orcs the CGI was perfect because it felt like they were actually fighting monsters not just men dressed up as monsters. The Orcs were perfect in my opinion, just a shame they have too much elven language, I much prefer the Orcs to act stupid and speak english than speak in this poetic manner, okay it's fine for the white orc because he's badass but his little grunts should speak english. The CGI, although a lot of it, was probably the best I've seen in a film, it really allowed the filmmakers to create more of a fantasy world instead of just showing us New Zealand, which isn't bad by the way. I found it thoroughly entertaining but The Hobbit works and flows best when it's just trying to be its own film. When you clearly hear lines and jokes copied from LOTR it's kind of cringey, they don't need to please LOTR fans they need to just clear their heads and focus on the story at hand. Either way, great film just hopefully for the next film we'll see more real sets and action sequences in places like Helm's Deep, like an out door set, they're so cool. Expand

Unlike with the LotR, where major character changes were made and major plot elements were twisted, almost everything is spot on in the Hobbit movies. For this reason they are far better than the LotR movies, and the second one better than the first.
It is full of action, great characters, tremendous effects, sound and design, with crisp dialogue, most of which is directly from the book.. Smaug himself is a particular highlight, with perfect voice acting.
If there are any flaws they all stem from Franny Walsch`s peculiar obsession with inserting female characters into the story where none exist. The attempted love story between the entirely made up female elf and one of the dwarves was cringe-worthy and easily the low point of the movie.
I would ignore reviewers on this, as I would with all of Peter Jackson`s movies. From the first release of Bad Taste they have either failed to get his sense of humor, or failed to understand which story it is he is telling in his Middle Earth movies. It has never been just The Hobbit, since this would be an under narrated, simplistic children`s book with loads of silly songs and which would tell none of the story of what is going on in the background, which is all available in notes, appendixes and in Silmarillion.
Even Tolkien regarded the story of the rise of Sauron as the real story, and he tried to rewrite The Hobbit to include this but gave it up. Still "reviewers" to a man whine over the scenes where Gandalf uncovers this as "distracting" and "unnecessary" and even that they have been included "only to stretch the movies into three parts".
I can`t imagine being so ignorant. Go watch the movie and ignore the ignoramuses. You will not regret it.

Effortlessly blending action, drama, comedy, and nerd references, we are plunged into Middle-Earth yet again. With great CGI, memorable characters, and fun storytelling, he creates another surefire hit. He nailed what the book did, which is makes you forget that there's a FREAKING DRAGON at the end, and instead focus on the danger at hand, whether it be spiders or orcs. Then, digging into the several hundred pages of appendices at the end of LOTR, he expands on the Necromancer, who is revealed to be Sauron. All in all, a great setup for the sure-to-please finale of the trilogy. And that cliffhanger!

P.S. Peter Jackson's cameo is hilarious.

It starts off a little weak, but gets really good. The story elements aren't great, but the movie suits it's purpose. It's a fun adventure. The effects are great, with the exception of a few isolated parts on a river scene and some bad horse CGI.

Thrilling and fun action scenes, great acting, beautiful scenery. The film is just shot so wonderfully too. Yes, it does change certain things from the book, but that isn't a negative and shouldn't hold the film back. Some of these additions and changes make for a very entertaining movie. The only negative for me was the Kili and Tauriel romance side plot. I just thought it was a bit cheesy at times and felt like it was thrown in there just for the sake of having a bit of romance. A minor niggle though. These user's that are bashing on this film and/or giving it a ridiculously low score, simply don't understand movies. The film may not be to certain peoples tastes or you may not think it is fantastic, but it is in no way, a "bad film". Isn't it funny that there are people out there giving this film a 0 simply because it isn't identical to the book? This is a marvellous piece of fantasy Peter Jackson has delivered us, yet again. Oh, and that Dragon! Smaug is awesome in this film. He looks amazing and the voice is perfect. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
(My Immortal diz: Oi)

If you can look past the fact that its not an "entirely" faithful film adaptation of the book you will most likely enjoy it for what it is a big budget fantasy movie trilogy.

I went to the Cinema (HFR 3D version) to Watch this with my son. Unlike "An Unexpected Journey" my son wasnt complaining about it being long and drawn out which is also how i feel about it. Thankfully there were no singing dwarves! The visuals were quite good with the HFR 3D just as you would be expecting. I wont mention anything of the plot as it deserves to be experienced.

I would definatly recommend seeing this in the Cinema. Rating: 8/10

Didn't mind the additions, they had a nice touch, especially the female elf (although the romance angle should just be gone in the third part :P )

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. you must turn off your brain for massive portions of this film if it is to be enjoyed as it is intended. Smaugs breath is both hot enough to burn rocks and wood out of the way but does not ever seem to have had any impact on all the gold in his lair... even as his flames roll over the gold to burn our crew of heroes it doesn't so much as melt a coin.
The river scene with the worst henchmen orcs in the galaxy who've only ever trained at shooting barrels is mildly unbelievable until the portion where the fat Dwarve leaves the water in the barrel, this will shatter anyone's ability to suspend disbelief.
Also the scene where the would be king rides on a tiny sheet of iron down a molten stream of gold running from the forge... yes, I think he would at least be complaining as his skin melted to it never mind the radiating heat would have burned off all his Hair and melted his skin.

Good movie tho, and you have to remember this is a Movie being made of the Story how Bilbo wants to have it remembered, them embellishing a little on how many people they killed or how far certain falls were is understandable as he is a small hobbit who likes to talk big of everything he does.

Gone are the laboured, talky scenes of Hobbit domesticity and much of the lame humour has also been excised. We now have a movie with plenty of action and adventure and one that stands tall and bears comparison to 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. All the series' constants are present including impressive make-up and special visual effects, as well as beautiful Art-Direction and great sound. The film sports boundless energy and some amazing set pieces involving spiders, dragons and Hobbits in barrels. Editing is also much sharper this time out and the wonderful swooping camera shots are very much part of the film's overall style. Aside from an awful supporting performance from Stephen Fry as 'The Master of Lake Town', 'The Desolation of Smaug' really does deliver. The cliff hanger ending sets up the third picture nicely, although I would Quite happily have continued watching this one for another couple of hours, that's how good it is! Expand

This film in all its glory does feel like a middle chapter of a trilogy. Though Jackson opens the movie, reappearing as his carrot-eating-cameo that bags a few laughs from LOTR movie fans in the theaters; its opening is weak. The movies ending is frustrating for anyone in the audience, but that's just because the films content is so good! The film fails to sustain any real structure so to any viewers who haven't seen the first installment or the LOTR movies, will struggle to follow the plot.
Although this film has its weak points it is a vast improvement on the first, firstly; there is tons more action, gore and evil. Then there's the CGI (best seen in the 3D format) which in this movie has some of the best achievements; Smaug is a masterpiece and is definitely worth the wait, and the orcs are truly brought to life when seen in 3D. Though there are some parts of the movie that have clearly been weakly written, this fresh take on evil and hatred festering in MiddleEarth outweighs these few flaws and gives Tolkien fans and Christmas cinema-goers what they need to restore their love for MiddleEarth on the big screen.
Look out for the spider scene in Mirkwood; for anyone who has read the book, they will realize how hard it must have been to write that scene with the spiders talking. For people who hadn't read the book this scene could have turned out to appear a little cheesy but Jackson and his team have succeeded and made the scene work better than any other in the movie!
Stronger writing and this movie could have been up there with 11 Academy Award winning, Return of the King...the film is satisfying; full of action, plenty of fantastic CGI eye-candy and a good performance from the entire cast.
8 out of 10, now wait for There and Back Again.

Tolkien under the name "The Hobbit". The movie has impressive CGI, acting talents and provides an atmosphere like no other. However, the movie's story differs from its origin and because of this, creates potholes. The movie doesn't solve all problems that are faced within the story, therefore, forcing the viewer to come back for a third instalment.

As expected the plot differs, introducing characters and scenarios not seen from its origins and has tweaks in the story. However, one may state that these changes are bad as they detach from the original story, making fans of the book and previous movies disappointed. However, it still does stick to its bases, still introducing locations and plot points from the book.

The visuals are amazing, providing the audience with the atmosphere that it needs and therefore, making the characters believable. The use of CGI can emote what emotion that is being portrayed, however, there are some instances that seem dodgy, or poorly animated such as Smaug's scene.

The movie is a disappointment to its origin and its previous movies, however as an individual movie, provides entertainment and an atmosphere like no other. However, because of its little ties to J.R.R. Tolkien's book "The Hobbit", it will disappoint to fans who are expecting a true movie interpretation of the fantastic book.

If you you go into the movie expecting a faithful recreation of the book, I daresay you'll be disappointed. However, having read both the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit book, I can assure you that Peter Jackson's middle earth is nothing short of breathtaking, and I find that the his numerous changes are more than justified. Desolation of Smaug offers much improved CGI (when compared to An Unexpected Journey), a soundtrack wrapped in nostalgia, and non-stop action from start to finish. Unlike the first installment in this new trilogy, the Desolation of Smaug feels much more free from the confines of staying true to the book. It really feels like Jackson just had fun making this movie, dotting it with welcome humor and incredible action. Legolas and Tauriel discover the most creative ways to slay orcs, and trust me, everything about their addition is epic and memorable. Without them, a lot of the intensity and uniqueness of the action scenes may have been lost. And then of course you have Smaug, who is undoubtedly the most impressive dragon I have ever witnessed. Ever. And Benedict Cumberbatch's voice only perfects an already astoundingly memorable creation. Smaug is most certainly up there with the best of the best.

All in all, this film stepped things up so much from the previous installment of the Hobbit trilogy, that I am actually tempted to say it just might compete with the Fellowship of the Ring. In other words, it's really good, and I highly recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't understand some of the bad reviews, they're ever trolls or stupid. This film is exactly how the book intended it to be (which is a children's book by the way)! There is some perfectly timed comedy moments, some tense moments which is really helped by the brilliant character development and those cute little Dwarves. Most of the animation was superb, I think Smaug was done brilliantly, however there were some moments which really stood out as very bad animation such as moments in the barrel ride scene and some moments in the halls of Erebor. The side stories with Gandalf discovering Sauron's return and the love triangle with Tauraylon, Legolas and Kili really complement the main action, and I actually am starting to like the fact they added more orcs to the story, unlike An Unexpected Journey where they're existence was annoying and pointless. Synopsis: Better than the first, amazing script adaption and story but some moments were let down by animation! Expand

If I were to fault this movie on anything it would be that I have to wait until December 2014 before actually seeing the finale. I found the acting, set design, costume, writing, and lore to be engrossing and enthralling. Of anything to criticize it would be the endemic problem of multiple special effects studios working on a project which can lead to variation in the look which can be bothersome. While the movie may not have been completely straight with the book, I never found a single instance where I think they slipped up. Any additional content was superbly meshed into the framework of the original story, giving it several fleshed-out story lines to follow. I wasn't expecting to appreciate this series to the level I have, and I am enticed by the amount of detail poured into these projects. One way to heighten the experience could be to try and explain the majority of the LOTR world to a fellow movie-goer not aware of any previous information even the first movie. It really helps bring out how much thought is required to keep such a complex multi-faceted world going in a script and then portrayed in a movie. I would recommend this to anyone, especially if they have even a little time to dig into the wonder that Tolkien's, and now Jackson's, mind has crafted. Expand

Personally, yesterday I spent the best 2 and a half hours of the year, contemplating a marvelous cinematographic technique with unique shots. Technically is a masterpiece and the interpretations, specially the Martin's Freeman and Ian McKellen's one, where astonishing.
For me, a much better second part of a triology that will continue transporting us to the Middle Earth, one of the biggest and wonderful world ever created. 10/10

Beyond magnificent! Went to see this today with my family hoping for great things and we were all so happy to see it was even better than we hoped.

Wonderful gripping story, interesting deep characters, spectacle battle and fight scenes, epic flow of events, dialogue was truly touching in places, acting superb, music was fantastic, look and feel was stunning.

I’m definitely going to go and see this again, a perfect blend of material from the book, other Tolkien works and original content to make it all mesh perfectly together for the film.

I am a huge fan of the Hobbit book and all of Tolkien’s works so I wanted a lot from this film and it absolutely delivered, I really can not praise this enough.

Wonderful film, highly recommend! A must see film!

The lord of the rings is set in a darker time than the hobbit. Regardlesd of this, the films are mnot supposed to be copies of one another because quite frankly that would be boring and I for one like new things and a new journey when im paying money to get to see it. Now, on to this movie in particular. Amazing. Crafted with love and care, exciting from start to finish, a visual spectactle to say the least and in my honest opinion, in different ways, just as enjoyable as lotr. The people talking and comparing it to the books, are mere imbeciles. You cannot film a book exactly as it is written. Some things in the book wouldn't work as a piece of film. The day you book realise this, is the day I can finally read reviews without wanting to tear my very eyes out. Thanks for reading. Go see the movie. Listen to th majority, its fantastic. Legolas has been given the proper badass treatment and they have finally done justice to his awesome character. Smaug is fully realized not cutting any budget shortcuts with teases and bad camera angles to avoid expensive CGI, rather Peter goes all out on Smaug making him a very memorable villain up there with Vader, Sauron, and Voldemort.

The pacing on this movie is fantastic and you get more Middle Earth lore exploration, definitely better than part 1. Even Sauron makes a stronger appearance, with his deep strong heavy voice, its epic ladies and gentlemen.

Peter Jackson was born to direct these movies, I cant even imagine what the final movie in this saga will be like, cause for sure he is going to raise the bar even further.

In short, it's why we go to the movies and delivers amazing performances by all. The Elves have never looked so slick and the production, especially Smaug the dragon, will make your jaw drop. I saw it last night, have been thinking about it since and will certainly see it a second time in 3D (the format in which I think it's meant to be seen). Brilliant all around. Expand

The acting is great. The CGI is great and, yes, there is a lot of it but I fail to see how this is a bad thing, especially when done so well! The characterization is far better than the first movie and the only aspect that seemed a little unnecessary is the relationship between Tauriel and Kili but it doesn't detract from the movie whatsoever. I've simply come to believe people make it their mission to nit-pick movies. Nevertheless, it is a nearly 3 hour movie that is worth the price of admission, to at least experience or distract yourself with during your free time, more so than the hour and a half movies the industry favors nowadays.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an amazing movie! Just as good as the first one! In my opinion The Hobbit series is on par with The Lord of the Rings series- they are just quite different, and people need to realize that. I will not say it was an improvement over An Unexpected Journey because I loved the hell out of that movie, but this one's just as good.
First of all, the acting was brilliant. Martin Freeman again creates a mesmerizing Bilbo- a very believable character (he isn't a master swordsman as soon as he picks up a sword, and he relies on his wits more than his brawn), and his wit and humour really add some heart to the movie. His subtle, slightly humorous reactions to Smaug waking up are great! His funny little mannerisms and facial expressions and hand gestures really give his character a sense of uniqueness among the other hobbits we've seen. Also, his relationship with Thorin is very well handled, although the best of it will be seen in There and Back Again. Speaking of Thorin, Richard Armitage gives a truly magnificent performance. The right balance of determination, arrogance, and charisma. Thorin is a much darker, more complex character than Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings, and you can really see his arrogance and greed taking over his being once he reaches Erebor, and just the slightest hint of madness (the scene where he holds Bilbo at sword point), which will come into play more in the third movie.
In regards to Ian McKellan's Gandalf, we really didn't see much of him, but he was as amazing as ever, and his duel with Sauron was incredible!
As for the dwarves, it is Ken Stott and Aidan Turner who shine this time, and much to my displeasure James Nesbitt's Bofur falls to the background a bit (but he still has his moments- "Bless my beard, is that the time!"). Stott creates a very memorable Balin, bringing depth, kindness, and heart to his role. Aidan Turner was great as the young, dashing Kili, and his hero moment at the river scene was very well done. Some of the other dwarves fall into the background a bit, but Dwalin, Bofur, Fili, and Gloin all are given some time to shine.
As for the new characters in this movie, they were all excellent and well integrate into the story. Mikael Persbrandt had a short but memorable role as the Skin-changer Beorn, and his performance was very powerful (and he had a really epic Swedish accent). Lee Pace was excellent as Thranduil, who is a very interesting character. Pace provides regal arrogance and a slight unsettlingness to the character, and his scene with Thorin was very powerful. Orlando Bloom is back as Legolas, and this time he provides more three-dimensional acting, as his personality and personal life are fleshed out more here, and we get to see a meaner side to him as well as a softer side. And his fight with Bolg at the end was badass! Tauriel, as played by Evangeline Lilly, was a very good addition to the story. Her character was even more interesting and in depth than I thought before the movie came out, and she was acted very well by Lilly. The romantic subplot with Kili was very well handled and not over done. She is a very interesting character- curious about dwarves, determined, and sticking up for what is right (which means going against her king). In Lake-town we are introduced to Bard and his family, and Luke Evans did a great job as the "Robin Hood of Middle-earth." His family was a nice touch and makes the audience care more for him and adds depth to his character. We also meet the Master of Lake-town and his conniving servant, Alfrid, played by Stephen Fry and Ryan Gage respectively. Both were very good characters. Stephen Fry was hamming it up as the sleazy master, and he was a joy to watch.
And now on to Smaug. What can I say besides that he was the best dragon, cgi character, and villain ever to hit the screens! Perfect vocal and motion capture performance from Benedict Cumberbatch, seamless visual effects by WETA, and some great dialogue. The scene with him and Bilbo was one of the best scenes I've seen in a very long time! Freeman and Cumberbatch were great together. His epic fight with the dwarves was great too.
The writing in this movie was very good. I thought each character was developed enough, and the side subplots, like Gandalf's investigation of Dol Guldor and the Kili/Tauriel sublot, were woven into the story smoothly. Also, the decision to split up the company was one of PJ's best deviations from the book.
The visual effects, costumes, makeup, and art direction were flawless as usual- no point going into details there. But they were truly top notch. The score was also amazing (I particularly like Tauriel's, Smaug's, Thranduil's, and Lake-town's themes). Howard Shore is a genius.
Special mention should be made to the Barrel scene. It was awesome- the best action scene of 2013 for sure! Legolas and Tauriel were badass, and Bombur's orc-anihilating barrel run was hilarious and epic at the same time!
All in all, this movie was perfect!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge fan of both Tolkien's works and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I was pleased to hear a few years ago that Jackson would be giving the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, the same treatment. I was, however, a bit apprehensive when I heard they were making it a trilogy. Last year's frankly quite disappointing start to the series was everything I feared it would be: bloated and, at parts, boring. This year's addition had no such problems. It was a fun, engaging, and exciting adventure, from the beginning meeting with the skinchanger Beorn to the confrontation with the dragon Smaug at the end. The acting, as should be expected, was incredible, especially on the parts of Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, and the always excellent Sir Ian McKellan. And Smaug is absolutely incredible. Both in the way he looks and the treatment he is given by voice actor Benedict Cumberbatch, Smaug will amaze and terrify you, just as he is meant to in the books. However, this movie was definitely not free of problems. While the action scenes are fun and entertaining, a few of them definitely could have been sacrificed. The dwarves' journey through Mirkwood was barely even touched on, as was Beorn. Maybe this just irks me because I'm a fan of the book; I'm sure audiences would much rather see the dwarves duke it out with a giant dragon in a thirty minute fight scene than trek through a dark forest. Even so, they turned a three hundred page book into three two and a half hour films, and they still found a way to make the beginning of this movie feel rushed. The movie, however, does eventually find its footing, and it is highly enjoyable the rest of the way through. Even with the reappearance of the Lord of the Rings' Legolas (Orlando Bloom), who does not appear in the Hobbit, and the addition of a completely new character, a female elf named Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), the movie stays mostly true to the book, and the changes it does make have no major effect on the direction of the story. All in all, this movie was both a great, entertaining improvement on the first film, and an excellent setup for the events of the next. While Desolation of Smaug may not have been perfect, it has certainly given me high hopes for the final film. Expand

Most of the action sequences went on a little too long for me, especially with the dragon in the last 1/2 hour, but there is no question it is a better film than the first installment of the series. It's a huge improvement over the already great first movie. The characters are just as enjoyable as always, and the story does an excellent job of providing it's own story whilst showing us events that lead up to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Overall I was blown away. I only have one minor complaint, and that is that the over-the-top action and goofy moments this movie provides is at odds with what I have come to expect from the Tolkien universe. It's not bad, it's just that some times it can feel out of place. Still this is one excellent movie, and one that any Middle Earth fan will love. I do recommend that newcomers experience the first Hobbit before jumping into this one though. I give the movie a near-perfect score of 9.9/10. Expand

I'll tell you that what this film needs is a stronger script, and a hint of the atmosphere the Lord of the Rings had. I admire how they flawlessly keep your attention for the whole 2 and half hours, and thus making the film more enjoyable, but sometimes after watching it through, you stop and think to yourself: "Wait, so over the last 20 minutes, they essentially accomplished nothing." Thankfully, the movie's flaws are overlooked by terrific performances by almost everyone. (Except a few of the side characters, you'll know what I mean when you see it), and it's strong element of creativity. (Note: following the book is not paticularly a good idea for a movie.) I'd be stunned if you didn't go and enjoy yourself at the second Hobbit film, but like I say, if the original wasn't the next Lord of the Rings, neither is this. (Lord of the Rings never had stupid cliffhangers either.) So go out and enjoy it for what it is. Expand
