Main character is extremely unlikeable, plot is fairly predictable and rather than feeling tense as information is drip-fed through phone calls I was just left feeling frustrated. Terrible film.

As an acting assignment, this would get an A+. As a movie...well it hardly classifies as one.

Gyllenhaal is a great actor, but for his standard, this is probably the worst I've seen from him. But I can't be too harsh given the lack of material, and apparently the director directed remotely, so it was definitely a "Covid movie." The most awful thing about the movie is the weepy voices on the phone. Listening to weeping women and children for so long is just unbearable, it made my skin crawl. And those voice actors weren't authentic at all. Just monotonous crying that went on and on and on.

Got the opportunity to check out an advance screening of this, which is a remake of a European movie by the same name. While most elements of this are the same as the original, it doesn't execute the story nearly as well. The main charactere, played by Jake Gyllenhaal is unlikable almost from the beginning, and the nearly constant dramatic moments of him being an abrasive tailhole wore thin very quickly. Even his voice grated on my nerves. Overly dramatic and over-acting. Almost every time he opened his mouth it was annoying. The original got it right. This one did not. Expand

Great acting but the story is terrible. You are basically watching someone handle a emergency call for 1.5 hours.

One the best One-Location films since Buried and Devil, THE GUILTY was initially going to be a three and a half stars for me but Gyllenhaal's powerhouse of a performance lifted it to the four it deserves. Antoine Fuqua, after the slight misfire that was Infinite, gives us another thrill ride he is so well known for. His direction and camera work is on cruise control at this point, and the propulsive plot never leaves you wanting, always pushing further and further. This movie simmers with tension and is a fun, slight flex of muscle from Fuqua, Gyllenhaal and Co. Expand

He soon ends up on a call where his basic 911 help evolves into a full-blown telephone investigation. This is basically a one-man show. There are a few people in the background with minimal lines, but he’s mostly playing off the callers and their dilemmas.  Director Antoine Fuqua, who certainly knows his way around police action, starts the movie with a compelling setup, but by the last third, things have deteriorated into overwrought drama. Gyllenhaal is fine when he’s angry, but the heavier moments fall flat, along with any potential tension or empathy that might have developed. This concept has been done better, most notably with Halle Berry in The Call. Expand

He becomes deeply invested in an emergency call from a kidnapped woman and we watch as it unfolds. The majority of the movie is just Gyllenhaal and voices on the other end of his telephone. Yes, The Guilty is the latest entry in that classic subgenre of thrillers when a dude is alone in a confined space communicating only by telephone. My favorite of those films is Phone Booth, and here's how The Guilty stacks up.

If The Guilty is going to be entertaining, then Gyllenhaal has to knock it out of the park and it has to be tense. Antoine Fuqua has directed Gyllenhaal to a dynamic performance and created an edge-of-your-seat thriller - for the most part. I'd say that Gyllenhaal does a great job of portraying this troubled police officer who can't observe necessary professional boundaries. Gyllenhaal builds in intensity as the story unfolds and the viewer goes along with him primarily because Jake is just so compelling. It seems like everything can go wrong at any minute and Gyllenhaal's performance keeps you engrossed. Because the film is solely focused on Gyllenhaal and you only hear the voices of the other actors, it all begins to feel very claustrophobic and taut. Also, due to the film's sub 90 minute runtime, the pace is relentless. It's like this emergency is happening in real time, but it does get a little repetitious in the back and forth between telephone calls. That's a minor quibble because ultimately it's a necessary evil in order to move the plot forward.

Ultimately, The Guilty delivers on its promise. It is a thriller that is focused solely on a tense performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. The fast pace of the film and the undercurrent of danger keeps you engrossed for its short runtime. It certainly is enjoyable enough to grab a box of popcorn. Definitely catch this flick on Netflix.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a cop assigned to man the 9-1-1 operator station during a really rough time for the city of Los Angeles. It takes a special person with patience, and just the right psychlogical facilities to go through what a 9-1-1 operator must go through. And Jake Gyllenhaal's face tells the story in this taut psychological thriller where Jake must struggle with his own demons as he tries to save the life of a woman in danger on the other end of the phone. For a movie set in basically one location, and with Jake is your face for most of the 90 minutes, I was never bored, and I felt his pain as he came to grips knowing that in the end, the truth will set you free. Was completely unaware this was a remake, and went into it having only seen the trailer after being suggested by my partner to watch together.

Was a very suspenseful and frustrating movie, but in a good way. The whole movie takes place in the same location, with a few little shots of other locations but not often. It reminded me of Phone Booth with Colin Farrell from 2002 which is one of my favourite movies, and that also mostly takes place in the same location.

Without going into spoiler territory, this movie may not be for everyone, especially with all the mainstream movies these days having a focus on action, this one has absolutely none of that. It is focused on a 911 operator who happens to take a 911 call that he borderline gets obsessed with resolving. Throughout the movie runtime, you are observing everything that he does to get to this resolution, usually being done in in a not so likable way, and this might be a criticism from some, that Jake Gyllenhaal's character is not likable, well he isn't supposed to be, he has his own personal issues and he has quite a temper, but where he feels frustration, I (as a viewer) felt the same, just maybe not to his scale. Jake did a great job here as well, this looks like a very demanding role in regards to emotional performance and he knocked it out of the park.

I have seen my fair share of movies so within the first 30-40 minutes, I paused the movie, looked at my partner and gave her theory I had about where the story was going to go, turns out I was correct. I tend to be able to do this often with movies, so I cannot make a comment on it being predictable but it is something that I was able to catch onto.

This was a great movie, I also adore the runtime of 90 minutes, not enough movies are at this length anymore and overstay their welcome, this movie was the perfect length. My partner and I both give it a thumbs up.
