The only reason I knew what was happening here was because I recently watched a documentary about this.

Finally, a movie in which neither Chastain nor Redmayne are annoying! P.S. Darren Aronofsky in the credits jumpscare. Expand

I'm not necessarily coming from the same place that everyone else is either. Make no mistake, this is a sobering, ominous and emotionally taxing retelling of true events, but to say this is simply a serial killer movie is like saying "The Insider" is just a movie about cigarettes. For me, the real masterstroke attribute of this film is its editorial commentary on the for-profit healthcare system and how its glaring flaws ultimately fostered the kind of negligence and deviancy that occurred here. The way that this movie contextualizes these events within the greater corporatocracy of modern American medicine is honestly just as staggering as the scenes of tension and suspense that build throughout the course of the film. Redmayne is unassuming, yet chilling. Chastain is reserved, yet imposing. The direction is careful, yet eerily atmospheric. Again, I was supremely impressed by this and am rather disappointed it ended up getting as buried as it is. Expand

there is no layer in this movie. I thought there will be some tension between the main characters, but it just presented in a normal way. Maybe it follows the real situation, but it is a movie, people want climax, not a blended movie. But itthere is no layer in this movie. When it comes to this fact-based tale about a serial killer nurse posing as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, director Tobias Lindholm manages to get two out of three right, and the one on which he’s unable to come through – motivation and back story – is not entirely his fault due to the facts of the case. However, on the other fronts, the picture succeeds solidly in chronicling an investigation conducted by one of the perpetrator’s professional colleagues and a pair of intrepid detectives, all of whom are stonewalled at almost every turn. The creepy atmosphere created here, backed by a fine ensemble cast led by Jessica Chastain, Noah Emmerich, Nnamdi Asomugha, Kim Dickens and Golden Globe Award nominee Eddie Redmayne, combine to make for a generally compelling watch, despite the ever-lingering question of “Why?” hanging over the narrative. “The Good Nurse” may not be groundbreaking cinema, but it’s certainly an engaging watch from start to finish, one of the best offerings in this genre to come along in quite some time. It would be a 7 if not for the fact that it pushes the "strong single woman hero" thing too much and distorted what actually happened to fit that narrative. It's morbid of course, but serial killers will always lend themselves to creating material for films, but how good they turn out to be will require a lot more elements, even larger than just the macabre nature of their crimes.

The Good Nurse is a film anchored by both Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, but its script in my opinion chose an approach that predominantly leaves everything up in the air.

The plot is more interested in Chastain's character and how she collaborated with the authorities to capture Redmayne's character, so he's pretty much left out of the picture. Yes you know what he was doing, but he basically just becomes the one dimensional villain that must be caught.

I have to tell you, if it weren't for its two big leading names, this film could have easily gotten lost on Lifetime and you wouldn't doubt that's where it belongs.

I definitely fell asleep for a few minutes. The movies lighting and vibe was very serious, dark, and unsettling. I think most unsettling of all was Redmayne's American accent, awkward and creepy and not in a bad way.

The cinematography could have been better because the picture was too gloomy in this instance. But due of the shifting twists, it didn't create any further disruption. Thus, it was never dull. Expand

Expand
