Why is he called the "Good" dinosaur? That would imply that all other dinosaurs are bad, yet we see that clearly isn't the case. What did the green boii do to earn his title?!?! I DEMAND TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!

This is my least favorite Pixar movie. I hate the characters, I hate all the unnecessary violence, I hate the aggressively forced attempts at emotional moments (at least Onward TRIED to earn them even if it still mostly fell flat) and aboveThis is my least favorite Pixar movie. Yikes.

Mai mi sarei aspettato, specialmente dopo Inside Out, uno dei prodotti più mediocri che la Pixar abbia mai prodotto. La resa scenografica è eccezionale, ma fa a cazzotti con i design non troppo convincenti dei personaggi. E parlandoYikes.

Sul serio, uno dei peggiori protagonisti mai scritti dalla Pixar finora. La storia si regge decentemente per la maggior parte del film, ma di certo non aveva bisogno di un conflitto come quello che è stato inserito. Fidatevi, se la sequenza con i T-Rex allevatori di bestiame non ci fosse stata, il mio giudizio sarebbe stato più basso.

For a Pixar movie, this is surprisingly void of wit and interesting characters. While it will probably keep the kids entertained, there is very little here for adults, which has always been one of Pixar's great strengths.

In my Cars 2 review, I mentioned that The Good Dinosaur was PIXAR's worst film. After rewatching it, I was a little harsh, but I still don't like it all that much. Coming right after Inside Out, this movie looks like a disaster. However,In my Cars 2 review, I mentioned that The Good Dinosaur was PIXAR's worst film. After rewatching it, I was a little harsh, but I still don't like it all that much. Coming right after Inside Out, this movie looks like a disaster. However, it's a perfectly safe and inoffensive movie, just low for PIXAR. One of the opening shots actually made my jaw drop because of how real it looked, which is the biggest praise I can say. Minus the character design, this is PIXAR's most beautiful looking film, it's just a shame that the story isn't all that great. It's an interesting spin on a "Western-ish" genre because instead of humans being the farmers and cowboys and rustlers it's dinosaurs. The marketing never revealed this information so it was an unpleasant surprise the first time I watched it and probably why I don't have many fond memories with this film. Now that I have rewatched it I can say that the story works well enough, I just don't like that dinosaurs are the main characters, which leads me to the character design. The movie looks gorgeous, but this clashes with very cartoony dinosaurs and it just does not work for me. It sucks me out of the movie, which leaves the movie feeling forgettable. The story isn't awful but it sure doesn't help out the poor character design. The only characters I like are Arlo and Spot, but I can't say much else about the other characters because they're so forgettable. Lastly, I don't think kids would respond well to this movie. Kids love dinosaurs and seeing them like this I feel would be kind of weird for them. It certainly was for me. But there's also a lot of dark stuff that happens in this movie: decapitations, innocent animals being eaten gruesomely, acid trips, etc. It's strange for PIXAR, and that's about how I can sum up this movie. The Good Dinosaur is definitely PIXAR's strangest movie. However, I will say that after rewatching it, I do like The Good Dinosaur a little more than Cars 2. But similarly to Brave, I couldn't see myself watching it again.… Expand

Lo primero que llama la atención son los gráficos y la animación, son una autentica locura, fácilmente la mejor película animadaThe Good Dinosaur es una película que para lo que se le puede pedir o criticar, quiere ser eso poco y nada mas. Lo primero que llama la atención son los gráficos y la animación, son una autentica locura, fácilmente la mejor película animada de 2015, incluso en este apartado la pondria entre una de las mejores de toda la historia. Una película animada con gráficos fotorrealistas es algo que casi nunca se dio o se da incluso a día de hoy en la animación. Todo esto se junta con muchos efectos especiales como el agua salpicando en los personajes o las sombras que realmente le dan vida al mundo y a sus personajes. Y la historia seria que intentan transmitir ayuda, manteniendo bastante el tono audiovisual y serio durante los primeros actos. Aunque en si la historia es bastante simple, muy simple, no quiere aspirar a nada original y nuevo, pero honestamente, no lo veo como algo negativo, ya que los escenarios y el carisma de los personajes enriquecen el conjunto. Lo que si le puedo criticar es que en las ultimas escenas, la película empieza a decaer un poco y el tono se rompe, con chistes muy absurdos, pero es algo que perdono. Arlo y Spot te van a caer muy bien, sin embargo, el resto de personajes si que son bastante olvidables y la película no parece querer hacer el mismo esfuerzo para recordarlos, a diferencia de otras películas de Pixar, como por ejemplo, Buscando a Nemo.
En resumen, es una que recomiendo, gráficamente es una obra maestra, y mientras que la historia se podría expandir muchísimo mas, lo cierto es que en la simplicidad que la trama busca, es bastante perfecta, solo muy mejorable.… Expand

This movie has some flaws: the story is very straight forward, the animation doesn't focus on its tone, some non flashed out characters and those that are have little likeability in them. Millions of years later, Apatosaurus corn farmers Henry and Ida have children: Libby, Buck and the runt, Arlo, who has trouble adjusting to farm life. While his successful siblings are allowed to "make their mark" (a mud-print on the family's corn silo), Arlo's timid nature makes tasks difficult for him. Henry attempts to give Arlo a sense of purpose by putting him in charge of guarding their silo, and helps him set a trap. It captures a caveboy, but Arlo cannot bring himself to kill him, and sets him free. Disappointed, Henry takes Arlo to track the caveboy, leading them into a ravine. Henry saves Arlo from a flash flood before being swept away and killed.

Without his father, Arlo shoulders more of the workload. He spots the same caveboy inside the silo and, blaming him for his father's death, chases him into a river, where he hits his head on a stone and is knocked unconscious. Awakening, he finds himself far from home and tries to survive on his own, but becomes trapped when a boulder pins his leg. The next day, Arlo wakes to find his leg has been freed, and the caveboy appears with food for him. The caveboy then leads Arlo to a berry tree, where the caveboy fends off a large snake, amazing Arlo and impressing a nearby eccentric Styracosaurus who wants to keep the boy. He forces Arlo to compete with him to give the boy a name he will respond to, which Arlo finally wins when he calls him "Spot". Arlo and Spot bond as Arlo laments his lost family, and Spot reveals that his own parents are dead. Later, when a storm strikes, Arlo runs away in fear and loses the riverbank he has been following home. The next morning, Arlo wakes to find Spot at his side. They are noticed by a band of pterodactyls, led by Thunderclap, who appear to be conducting a rescue operation but turn out to be savagely carnivorous. When the pterodactyls try to take Spot, Arlo and Spot flee, happening upon a pair of Tyrannosaurus named Nash and Ramsey, who ward off the pterodactyls. Nash, Ramsey, and their father Butch have lost their herd of longhorns, so Arlo offers Spot's help in sniffing them out.

The group locates the herd, but Butch recognizes the work of cattle rustlers, and uses Arlo as a lure. Arlo and Spot attract the attention of four rustler Velociraptor, allowing Butch and his family to attack. After the rustlers have been driven out of the pasture, Arlo joins the Tyrannosaurus in driving the cattle south when he sees the familiar mountain peaks of his homeland in the distance, and leaves with Spot to return home. Along the way, they encounter an adult feral caveman in the distance, and though Spot shows interest, Arlo dissuades him and they continue on. As another storm approaches, Thunderclap and the pterodactyls return and attack and carry Spot away. Arlo becomes entangled in vines, where he has a vision of Henry leading him home. Arlo instead resolves to save Spot, making the vision of his father proud before it fades away. Arlo finds and attacks the pterodactyls, who have cornered Spot at the river. Arlo and Spot together plunge Thunderclap and the pterodactyls into the water, where they are swept helplessly downstream. When another flash flood occurs, Arlo leaps into the water to rescue Spot as the two are swept away toward a waterfall. Arlo protects Spot as the two plummet down the fall, and carries him to shore. As they approach Arlo's home, the two again hear the unknown caveman call, and are approached by an entire cave family. With great reluctance, Arlo pushes Spot to join his adoptive family, and the two of them share a tearful goodbye. Arlo finally arrives home to his mother and siblings, and makes his mark on the silo between those of his mother and father.… Expand

So I never really felt the urge to watch this movie as I'm not really interested in dinosaurs and the promos for the movie didn’t look too interesting to me. Today it was recommended to me on Disney Plus so I decided to watch it and damn I did not expect to like it this much.

One thing that was pretty unexpected was the role distribution. I expected for Arlo (the dinosaur) to be more like an animal that can’t talk and is treated like a pet and the boy, Spot, to talk and teach him things but it’s the exact opposite. Arlo can talk, while Spot doesn’t say a word and behaves like a dog. That was quite a suprise and a nice change since it’s usually always the other way around in movies like this.

The next thing that I want to point out is the incredible animation. The animation is so good, the landscapes literally look real. Especially the water impressed me. Of course, the characters look more cartoonish because they aren’t supposed to look too realistic and are supposed to stand out but damn the landscapes and backgrounds? Beautiful.

The plot reminds me a lot of "Finding Nemo" in some parts. A little boy who is not that brave and is different than the others gets lost and has to find his way back home and he gets help from others and finds new friends but also meets bad people along the way. Of course, a parent also dies while we’re at it (Arlo's father). So the plot is pretty predictable. Only after a few minutes I already knew that his father would die and then he did exactly in the moment where you'd expect him to die lol. That’s one negative thing, the fact the plot is so predictable. Another bad thing is the way that the animals eat each other. I know it’s part of nature and I‘d be okay with it if it wouldn’t happen over and over again. They’ve overdone it with the killing scenes in my opinion. The scene were Spot rips the head off of an insect can’t be good for children. Otherwise, I thought the movie was beautiful. I cried three or four times throughout the movie. I love the way that Spot is used in this movie. He doesn’t speak and has less screen time than you'd expect but he’s so much more than just Arlo's friend or sidekick. He’s kind of a metaphor. He steals the food on the farm and Arlo's father wants him to kill Spot. Arlo can’t do it because he’s too afraid of Spot. Arlo's father wants to help him beat his fear though and to do his job so they follow Spot and that’s when Arlo's father dies. After his father's death, Arlo makes Spot responsible for his dad‘s death and wants to kill him the next time he sees him. They both get carried away by the stream and that’s when their journey to find their way back home begins. On the way they face a lot of tough and dangerous situations and save each other multiple times. I’m gonna stop describing the plot and come to the point. What I‘m trying to say here is that killing Spot was Arlo’s job to get his mark and become brave but in the end, Arlo faced his fears and Spot was the one that helped him become brave. I can’t really describe it better than that and I‘m probably not making any sense but yeah, Spot has a very important role here. So all in all, "The Good Dinosaur" is a beautiful, extremely well animated movie, which I did not really expect but I like to be suprised. There are some funny scenes but also some extremely sad scenes that‘ll make everyone cry. The ending is pretty abrupt but still a full circle moment that made me cry.… Expand

Pixar is humanized and humbled by this project. And I love that part. For a production house, that perpetually prints out good quality game changing products, it is good to see them fumble or slow down a bit; am not a sadist. Peter Sohn, the director with his excellent execution skills is cornered by the intention of his very own way of storytelling. A film that surfs so unapologetically from one life event to another, it is extremely difficult to cope up with any of the ongoing incidents occurring in this La La Land that despite of being coloured with so many bright and attractive colors, never appeals to you.

And the primary reason why we don't settle down on any event or more precisely, act of the film is because you don't ever really feel these characters present around the environment that we are told so repetitively that they are. And this grows urgently important as the film starts to age. Since for the first half of the film that basically follows a train of textbook montages scraped off from various animated fairy tales that is just retold with an unfunny final punch line that tells you it is a joke and that it is a bad one.

And then when it comes to have their feet running on the ground and accept any surrounding for that matter, the location, set pieces, agendas, priorities and even characters change for us to nod to any of this alternative universe hokum. The idea isn't everything, it never is. Probably for an endorsement, but even at this day and age we are incredibly passionate about the style and substance. And all of this, the current reality, and all of that, the film and what it revolves around, just proves the unchanging fact and that is not even The Good Dinosaur could survive this; extinction seems inevitable.… Expand

The story was definitely a cute one but it is for sure the 2nd weakest Pixar story. The animation was just as impressive as all of the Pixar movies are. What I'm saying is, parents, if you don't want to do your job with your kids, use this movie and rent it and do anything, but for actual critics and audiences who know Pixar + Disney makes brilliant movies time to time, don't waste your money on this lifeless, boring, predictable movie. What an underwhelming film. I guess that the fact that I hated this movie when I first saw it it's because I had REALLY high expectations, as a couple months earlier, Inside Out, one of the best animated movies of the decade was released.What an underwhelming film. I guess that the fact that I hated this movie when I first saw it it's because I had REALLY high expectations, as a couple months earlier, Inside Out, one of the best animated movies of the decade was released. This is honestly the second worst Pixar movie ever and maybe the worst Pixar movie that wasn't a cash grab. This movie had a very troubled production and maybe Pixar lost faith in this movie and instead of cancelling it, they rushed it, released it and gave almost no marketing to it, because this movie feels so...Rushed.

Now, "rushed" feels its writing, because the animation definetly doesn't feel rushed, it's STUNNING. All backgrounds feature beautiful photo-realistic landscapes and those breathtaking vistas are the best part of this movie and maybe the only good thing, because everything else is so bad.
The plot is generic and now I know that that could not have been a bad thing as Pixar has proven to turn generic stories into masterpieces because of the wonderful way those stories are executed and this movie lacks that: A good execution of its story. This is a very boring movie, with almost nothing interesting happening the whole movie. The characters are non-existent, besides Arlo and Spot, every other character is just a pile of rocks, their only purpose are being plot devices, so this movie doesn't really have any conflict.
There's almost zero humor, nothing truly emotional, nothing truly inspiring, this is a big pile of nothing.

The third act might be one of the worst a Pixar movie has ever had. The climax feels SO forced and there are no stakes and no tension, it made me feel nothing, just like the rest of this movie (If you've seen the movie, you might know what I'm refering to).

I actually feel sad for the animators of this movie: They invested so much time and hard work to make the landscapes look gorgeous and visually impressive, but they wasted their talent in a bland, forgettable and boring story.… Expand

I really was disappointed while watching this movie.
The Lion King alike movie was completely disappointing.
The first thing I didn't like was the usual and very expected trip. It was absolutely not surprising or entertaining at all. It wasI really was disappointed while watching this movie.

It was all about nature, and it takes us to the second thing I didn't like. The beauty of nature was absolutely unnecessary at all!
The third thing I didn't like was the sh*tty comedy scenes. It really was cheap kind of comedy, it wasn't funny at all.
The fourth is the animation, it wasn't that good.
The fifth is boredom, it really is boring, I watched it 2 times and I was bored in the second time!
They are enough to make me hate that movie!
The only thing I loved about this movie was the emotional scenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good Dinosaur is a fun enough movie, filled with the usual Disney-cliche where the parent dies and the kid feels a need to prove themselves. After timid and runt-of-the-litter dinosaur Arlo is swept away from home by a raging river, he begins his long adventure back home. Along the way, he meets a human child who acts very much like an uncivilized dog. Arlo names the child “Spot” and the two go on their adventure back home, meeting lots of new characters along the way. In conclusion, The Good Dinosaur is not exactly anything special, but it’s a heartwarming story about friendship and family. It does good in most parts, but when it falls, the plunder is evident. If you want something to do for a good hour, put this movie on. You may not be particularly enthralled, and you may not be moved at all when the credits roll by on-screen, but at least Spot is cute.… Expand

Maybe not one of Pixar-Disney best cards. The dystopic, pre- hysterical adventure of a shy, cowardly dinosaur is more closer to Cars than Inside Out or Toy Story. Another Pixar great. Don't listen to the other reviews, it is a very great story. It follows Arlo and Spot, Arlo is a dinosaur that acts like a human and Spot is a human that acts like a dog. It follows them on their emotional journey home.

This movie sent me on an emotional roller-coaster ride, that no film has ever done for me before. This movie makes you emotionally engaged with not just the beautiful CGI, but also the characters in, once again, a way that has never done for me before as well. Just look up 1 picture of Arlo smiling and tell me that you don't want to smile at that. Exactly, no matter how hard I try, I just smile at it. So by far, an amazing film and honestly, in my eyes, this is the best of Pixar. DEFINATLEY go check this out.… Expand

The art style for these characters looks beyond terrible, its almost blatantly obvious that they were designed by committee rather than by anyone with actual vision. The music swells, but scenes fall flat with almost no emotional levity. You almost feel frustrated to see this shallow "good dinosaur" keep making mistake after mistake and running away from EVERY CONFRONTATION in the entire film. This is supposed to be character building cinema right? Something positive for kids to admire or look up to? The main protagonist is a whiny, pathetic runt of a dinosaur that gets his own father killed, almost gets killed himself multiple times, almost gets his friend killed and by the end of it he just happens to learn the most important thing in the whole film- NEVER LEAVE HOME AGAIN. This is an embarrassing release by Pixar. It shows that not only do they not respect their audiences, but that they are perfectly content writing bad children's films rather than films that have a lasting appeal to young and old. All style and no substance gets you nowhere Pixar.… Expand

The animation is so stunning that it even makes the dinosaurs themselves look almost real at times. Particularly when interacting with the elements of the world. There's a moment fairly early on in the movie where we witness water dripping off of main character Arlo as he rises up from a river. That moment will forever stay in my mind as one of the most beautiful moments I have ever witnessed in cinema.

So yes, I can't praise the animation enough. However it's good looks wouldn't have meant anything had the movie had no substance to back it up. Luckily "The Good Dinosaur" has us covered on all fronts. Humor, heart, and some surprisingly adult action all ensure that Arlo's adventure earns the right to carry the Pixar name.

As with other Pixar movies it's one that can appeal to and, most importantly, touch people of any age. Obviously the Pixar level of production quality is present, but so is their storytelling. The themes, lessons, and even the set up are all admittedly familiar, but The Good Dinosaur manages to still keep them engaging.

It's a lovely movie in every way. One perfect for families and offers things for every member regardless of their age. Even if after watching it you feel like it doesn't live up to other Pixar movies, it will still be hard to deny the quality here. I personally do feel it lives up to the Pixar name and highly recommend it to everyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good Dinosaur is the first original movie by pixar that isn't a sequel/prequel that we can consider a bomb compared to other hits. There's WAY too many cliches compared to their previous movies and a whole lot of nothing. The good dinosaur is a step back in the direction of previous works but let's talk about that.

Essentially it's a world filled with dinosaurs that act like humans if they were a little smarter than cavemen, and they essentially farm the land. Yes, I know, this is already sounding like a bad setup in general, let alone the fact that it's a plot to a pixar movie, but trust me when I say it gets worse. To be fair though, the plot itself doesn't matter because nothing really happens in the plot. It's essentially a reverse plot of Finding Nemo where the smallest dino gets lost and has to make it back to his family instead of his family trying to go find him.

So what are the problems with that? Well for starters: It's repetitive. Now It's one thing to have similar storytelling to other movies, but it's a similar plot to one of their own movies making it a lot more boring to watch. We know what's going to happen: dino gets back to his family. Other than that, the adventure of him trying to get back should be interesting but it isn't. The characters aren't specifically interesting and at some points don't make sense. Like the Pterodactyls are the bad guys in this and T-Rex's are the good guys for whatever reason.

So those are the main things that are wrong with it, but is it still worth seeing? Well for one thing, the plot gets old and quite boring but it's not that bad. It's not like it's a complete rip off of Finding Nemo in any way, just too similar. I wouldn't recommend this movie to kids though because it has some pretty violent outbursts and they aren't goofy or silly, they're just straight repulsive to watch. The only REAL good thing that came out of this movie are the background works. The backgrounds and environments in this movie are WAY too good for it. In a way, it makes the movie worse because you can't stop focusing on the out of place characters are in such realistic environments. All in all, I would not recommend buying this movie on any service or DVD but if you have an hour you want to waste on a lot of nothing then I'd say go ahead and watch this movie. Otherwise go watch Finding Nemo again because it's most likely a lot more enjoyable than this snore.… Expand

The movie asks the question, what if the asteroid that supposedly wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, missed ? The main character is Arlo, a young dinosaur who lives with his parents and two siblings at a farm. After a tragedy occurs with a close member of his family, he then has to go on an adventure, where he will learn many things and even befriend a human being, Spot.
This movie is just great in every sense of the word. I genuinely do not get all the hate that this has received, I mean sure it got a very good and certified fresh 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but many people are calling this as a disappointment simply because it is not the next Toy Story or whatever. Grow up people, cause not everything Pixar does is going to be perfect, and if you can't accept that then the problem is with you, and not the movie.
This is definitely one of the best looking animated movies ever made. Sure the characters are not as real looking as the landscapes in the background but you have to remember that this is an animated movie, and usually they are meant for kids who really do not care if a movie looks perfectly real or not. If the character designs are your problem that you're definitely just nitpicking.
The voice cast is brilliant all around, and maybe it doesn't have stand out voice performances like Inside Out does but then again, Inside Out is one of the best animated movies ever made so you can't really compare these two simply because they were made by the same production company. The Good Dinosaur is also very touching and heartfelt with a very good message, plus it is for adults too with many jokes that kids will surely not understand but the older can enjoy and appreciate. So basically there's something for everyone here and yet again it made the least money for any Pixar movie ever, which is just stupid.
I hope people buy this more on Blu-Ray and DVD so that it does not continue to be as underrated as it as right now.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know why Pixar released a movie like this or why it could classified as PG but this movie is both bad & improperly rated.
This movie is filled with cheap forced personality development with little to no reason shown such as is the case with Spot & Arlo. It also feeds into the overused plot of a character down on their luck until someone they love is killed, in this case the father in an exact copy of the Lion Kings Mufasa death with river replacing the stampede with Arlo watching from above (like i said exactly the same).
The movie also has in my opinion to much abuse for a PG movie from the father telling his son to murder the intruder to Alto being slammed around in a river resulting in very vivid bruising.
Another peeve of mine is the scene in which Arlo & Spot eat mushrooms which turn out to inflict a shroom-like effect on them both. Definitely not PG since this include drug abuse.
Overly violent murderous dinosaurs bragging and/or insinuating about how they murder others showing so much more violence than is neccessary for a pG.
Boringly painful storyline to watch, cheap character personality involving teaching kids being murderous is awesome as is the case with the T-Rex family, religiously infused dinosaur becoming murderous or solving your problems with murder & abuse. If they were trying to create a horror film for kids then this would be it as it has too many frightening elements for them.
The only thing I can say positively about this movie is the detail to environmental design otherwise not worth paying to watch either at home or at the theatre.… Expand

Arlo (Raymond Ochoa), the titular Apatosaurus, is animated in such a fashion as to suggest a tossed-off pencil sketch that's been filled in with fluorescent green paint. He's an anonymous blob with round, white, bobbly cartoon eyes, rendered with pointedly little of the painstaking detail that often abounds within even the most fleetingly glimpsed of Pixar's creations. The other dinosaurs are similarly basic in design, sometimes amusingly so, as is the case with a T-rex (Sam Elliott) with a huge, rudimentarily square head that juts out from its neck like the front of a tractor trailer, its body trailing behind with a dainty reserve that memorably contrasts with the character's fulsome western manliness.

The primary quality of the character animation is clearly the result of a decision that was consciously made by director Peter Sohn and the other artists who worked on The Good Dinosaur. Because Arlo's surrounding world is built from traditionally tactile Pixar stock, which is comprised of a specific mixture of photorealism and comparatively more idiosyncratic impressionism. The film's landscapes are often strikingly gorgeous, occasionally even lyrical. A riverbed that Arlo wakes up in is particularly dense with detail, with rocks that one feels they could reach out and grasp. It's a flourish that intimately emphasizes Arlo's exposure to a vast realm outside of what he knows. The great, billowing trees, the farmlands, and the fields that Arlo's family plows with their reaching necks are also fashioned with Pixar's painterly panache.

The contrast between the generic animals and their vivid environment highlights an unexamined subtext. The film's premise suggests that an asteroid missed Earth 65 million years ago, allowing dinosaurs to flourish as the planet's dominant species. Humans eventually came along, but are subservient to the dinosaurs, behaving like dogs. Which is to say that the dinosaurs of this film never properly existed, residing in an alternate world, and Pixar's method of animating them consistently calls out this unreality, this sense of divorce from an otherwise known atmosphere, while also affirming Arlo's gentleness and vulnerability. Surrounded by this impressive Pixar world, he's just a goofy little dino.

The Good Dinosaur is stranger and more interesting in theory than it is in reality. The film establishes this parallel history, initially proffering a narrative that suggests a cattle-drive western with giant reptiles in place of cowboys, only to disappointingly fall back on the same story that fuels virtually all significant Disney titles: an eccentric child must learn to become an adult, mastering their issues with their parents and themselves.

The main character is a collection of insecurities that have been calculatedly assembled so as to teach children the usual lessons about bravery, loyalty, and self-sufficiency.

At least the first act benefits from tension that Sohn isn't willing to properly interrogate. Arlo's father (Jeffrey Wright) tells his children they should strive to “make their mark,” before pressing a mud print onto a silo he's built to protect their crops. Arlo's mother (Frances McDormand) also makes a print, saying that, one day, the children can do the same. The siblings are instantly able to fulfill their chores, earning their “marks,” while Arlo's success is routinely undone by fear. Arlo's a pacifist, though he doesn't know it yet.

In other words, Arlo's parents are deliberately fostering a situation in which one of their children, obviously developing at a different pace than the others, is to feel inferior to the rest of his family. The parents are encouraging the sort of groupthink mentality that makes high school a living hell for those who aren't immediately adept at the physical activities that command a culture's attention at the expense of everything else. Yet Sohn portrays Arlo's father as a good parent, as yet another Disney patriarch to whom the hero must prove everything. The conformist implication of this scenario is so ghastly as to nearly throw the viewer out of the film, yet it lends The Good Dinosaur a hint of neurotic emotional friction.

The Good Dinosaur has its poignant moments, particularly when a human boy teaches Arlo how to swim in a river, and there are funny allusions to how pitiless animals in the wild can be. But the film abounds in routine, featherweight episodes that allow Arlo to predictably prove his salt to his family, resembling a cross between City Slickers and Finding Nemo. Plus there's barely even an villain.

To be honest, I have been looking forward this since the day I came to know about it. But it took so long to come out, even the Windows OS has upgraded thrice since then. After all these years, now I feel this is not what I wanted. It should have been different, especially the story. It was a fine animation, including all the technical aspect had no issues, but the story was not convincing.

Seemed just like another version of 'The Croods'. In fact, crossover between these two would be awesome like the boy from this and the family from other title as an original family who lost each other for some reason. But the trouble is, both are from the different production house and coming together is a tough task.

The civilised dinosaurs? That's kind of weird, but in a children's story and animation, all are fair. So I turned into one and enjoyed it. Apatosaurus are farmers, T-Rex are cowboys, yeah whole new perspective, apart from the humans who are still in lower on the chart of dominance and intelligent.

In my opinion, I'm being honest with what I felt. The theme about self discovery and to throw away fear is inspiring for the little children. At a same time, it is not a freshly developed story, kind of reminds 'The Lion King'. I know they're not same, but the initial parts are, between father and son. You can watch it once or twice, because it is not a boring film, but not the best.

It doesn't hurt that this is the most visually stunning work that Pixar has ever done. So, it won't live along side Toy Story, Up and Inside Out, but it's better than Cars. I got to say, when I saw the trailer for this movie, I was kind of disappointed. I expected this film to be terrible. But I saw the film and I didn't regret it. Not one bit. The film is my second favorite movie of all time currently. The animation is stellar, the characters are hilarious and the plot is incredible. So basically a kid named Arlo's dad dies (which is the first time that ever happened in a Pixar movie) and he blames the human-dog kid, soon to be named Spot. The two of them get lost in the middle of nowhere and try to get home. It has old classic Pixar comedy, and lots of fun voices, such as Jeffrey Wright, Sam Elliot and even Steve Zahn as the villain. In total, The Good Dinosaur is a definite watch and a 10/10.… Expand

The relationship between the dinosaur and the boy is really cute but the story feels recycled. I've seen it before and in better movies. The background is more interesting than what occurs around it, in terms of aesthetics and plot.

You'll find the dialog is poor, and the characters communicate the most effectively when they aren't speaking at all.

Apparently being responsible for the death of your own father and almost dying countless times is no big deal -- doesn't phase the main character at all and continues like business as usual.

Two phrases that embody the pure and beautiful that it is "The Good Dinosaur". 2015 was a resounding success for Pixar year, with "Inside Out" in the first half of the year, as for the second half not going to be easy. but the film went well rid.

"Inside Out" is full of complexity, colors, deep characters, joy, a real Pixar Movie, "The Good Dinosaur" is radiant, with a simple linear plot but even more profound than success at the box office.

You could say it isn't the invention more lucrative and embarrassingly wealthy of the producer, however, it is a familiarly rich and rewarding film, with lessons for children and adults. It is absolutely sentimental and highlights within the competing for being more human Disney film.

The fact that Pixar released two projects in the same year, apparently would mean production and distribution problems, it was not so, not counting the delay generated by the departure of Bob Peterson of the plan.

What have happened if 65 million years ago a meteorite had not finished with the dinosaurs? Yes, right now, we would be dinosaurs and humans, so would exist millions of "Jurassic Park" films.

After a beautiful birth, Arlo (Jack McGraw and a little more old Raymond Ochoa) strives to meet the expectations of his father, but his fears more intimate do not allow it. Throughout the development of the film characters (prehistoric) are added to the adventure, however is a human child who actually manages to make story, acting sometimes as a secondary character.

Dinosaurs' genera are not clearly distinguished, but, What importance does this?. Perhaps they are totally invented or maybe not, better not entering matters paleontologists.

The nice colors (for anything equal or similar to the colorful "Inside Out") of the creatures are tones obviously suitable, since despite being clear and flat tone, they want that appreciate us the lush landscapes as a field, a barrage seen in reality, ravines and plains touchingly real.

Arlo becomes the character more beloved today, When to be beaten, weak, bruised, unprotected, still feels strong to return home. A stunning scene in the river is terribly strong and harrowing. As it is common in the animated films, the fantastic characters acquire qualities and features human, accompanied with story's visual and subjective mood.

Disney impresses in this case, reversing the typical story of true friendship 'Dog - Human', where in this situation the human being is the dog and the human is the creature. some touch cliches as, on the road to decay and decaying but throughout these setbacks the friendship begins to emerge.

Sentimental, emotional and human of the film is held for a couple of scenes that vividly portray a heart strong and beautiful, softening the heart of all viewers. A viscerally emotive product and substantially full of learning for the family.

Defects, errors, effects, successes, are the ones who manage to "The Good Dinosaur" to achieve one of the posts more high of the Pixar podium and not for external and visual emotions, is one of the most profound (perhaps the deepest) to achieve the main objective that must have a producer to children "Teach in family". Except for the emotional end, the film is full of friendship and family, never feels his solitude, because in all film different prehistoric characters are born, Finally, do less, on this occasion, was truly do a lot more.

Many said it was very good, others said it was bad, but after seeing it I thought it was... good. Not bad, it is not that great and not reach of the height of Inside Out, is just good. The Problems of The Good Dinosaur are 1- The script is cliché (Arlo's father dies, "that original") 2 The villains, I thought it was a story that needed no villains like Inside Out, but surprise, they had villains. Thunderclap and his team of "rescuers" want to eat the caveman boy. That's pretty stupid, they have thousands of stray animals and just want to eat one. And 3- the designs of the characters they don't fit with the beautifusl and realistics backgrounds. Why they didn't do betters designs and look realistic as Dinosaur (2000)?. and I thought it would be the worst of Pixar, but it is not so bad. The backgrounds are beautiful, the voices are decent, the animation is good and the music is beautiful, but the problem of The Good Dinosaur is that don't feel like a Pixar film is more Disney. But at least no worse than Cars 2. I happy i having i saw and has not obtained the nomination to the academy. They didn't deserve it… Expand

Less a major animated effort than a late-autumn “filler”, the movie offers enough to enthrall children without boring parents but, at the same time, fails to provide the thematic depth and richness on offer in such previous titles like Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, and WALL-E. To that extent, The Good Dinosaur is a disappointment, although most viewers who pay $10 to see it likely won’t regret the purchase.

The Good Dinosaur had a troubled production history and that may have been the root cause of the on-screen problems. It spent nearly six years in development and two years ago underwent a reconstruction with major rewrites, the jettisoning of the director and most of the original voice cast, and a “repurposing” of the project. Although Disney claims to be “very pleased” with the end result, The Good Dinosaur’s meandering storyline shows signs of what may have concerned the studio.

The film offers a variety of cobbled together genres. The early scenes echo themes and moments from The Lion King and The Jungle Book. A majority of the running time represents a road trip with buddy film elements. Portions of the second half pay homage to the Western, complete with a campfire, a round-up, musical cues inspired by The Magnificent Seven, and the gravelly intonations of Sam Elliott. The typical Disney messages about tolerance, friendship, and perseverance are in evidence but they seem obligatory and are clumsily integrated.

The opening sequence provides setup to explain (for anyone who cares…) the Flintstones-friendly co-existence of humans and dinosaurs during the same era. The asteroid hypothesized to have caused the mass extinction event misses the Earth, allowing the behemoths to continue their existence unimpeded by global climate change. Several million years later, dinosaurs have developed into anthropomorphized creatures while humans favor walking on all fours and yapping like dogs. The Good Dinosaur’s hero, Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa), is the youngest member of an Apatosaurus (a.k.a. “Brontosaurus”) family - Dad (Jeffrey Wright), Mom (Frances McDormand), and three kids. They’re farmers, stocking up for the winter. But they have a “pest” problem - a human child (later named “Spot”) is sneaking into their stores and eating their corn. Dad tasks Arlo with the chore of exterminating the intruder. But the young dinosaur can’t bring himself to kill. A chase ensues and, when Arlo and his father are caught in a sudden storm, tragedy occurs. The rest of the movie follows Arlo and Spot, swept away by a river to a far-off place, as they make the homeward journey.

Visually, The Good Dinosaur boasts some of the most amazingly photo-realistic sets I have seen in any animated film. There are times when it appears as if the filmmakers inserted the characters/creatures into real world footage. The water scenes - often troublesome in animated films - are flawlessly rendered. If The Good Dinosaur falls short in the narrative department, it represents a step forward for Pixar’s artists. The realism of the surroundings makes the dinosaurs seem more cute and cartoonish than they might otherwise. It’s a conscious choice since photo-realistic dinosaurs might be too frightening for young children. After all, this isn’t Jurassic World.

A role reversal casts a non-human as the chatty protagonist and a (prehistoric) homo sapien as the sidekick/pet. Although it’s an accepted conceit that animals often talk in Disney movies, few are as verbally skilled as Arlo. And Spot (thus named to re-inforce his similarities to a loyal canine) never utters a word, although he scratches himself and howls from time-to-time. Unfortunately, this clever inversion doesn’t make either Arlo or Spot more interesting. They’re generic cookie-cutter characters.

The pace, as is often the case with road movies regardless of the species of the protagonists or the terrain through which they travel, is uneven. There are long stretches when little happens punctuated by action set pieces. Many “popular” dinosaurs make appearances, including T-Rexes and velociraptors. Perhaps the best moment comes during an understated scene where Arlo and Spot, who don’t share a language, use sticks to communicate. There’s emotion and pathos in this sequence - something the rest of the movie could have used more of.

The problem is that the film’s uncertain narrative creates a variable viewing experience. Despite some of Pixar’s recent failures, there’s still an expectation that anything with their name attached with be better than features produced by their rivals, but that’s not the case with The Good Dinosaur. The movie isn’t appreciably better or worse than a Madagascar or an Ice Age. It’s top-quality animation in service of a less than top-quality script.… Expand

The protagonists, Arlo and Spot were both very likeable and Sam Elliot gave a solid vocal performance as Butch the T-Rex. Speaking of T-Rexes, I think Pixar deserve some recognition for making him a good guy rather than a villain or an obstacle, like most dinosaur movies do. As well as visually stunning, the movie was quite emotional- which isn't surprising for a Pixar movie. So overall, while it lacks the complexity of previous Pixar films, The Good Dinosaur makes up for this with beautiful animation and heartfelt emotion.… Expand

Following the huge success of the outstanding ‘Inside Out’, the brilliant minds at Disney-Pixar close the year out with a less ambitious and more simplistic but nevertheless enjoyable coming-of-age story and morality tale in the form of ‘The Good Dinosaur’. A sort of reverse Flintstones hybrid where Dinosaurs talk, cultivate land and raise nuclear families while humans are feral critters that are good as pets… or food.

‘The Good Dinosaur’ ticks all the boxes of what we might expect from a meticulously produced modern animation. A story that engages both adults and children and which includes life lessons wrapped in an adventure fraught with peril, plenty of comedy tempered by pathos and touching moments, and stunning visuals. Although the cartoonish characters set in vivid ultra-realistically rendered landscapes takes some getting used to.

As much it’s an animated dinosaur adventure, this is Pixar’s tribute to the Western, from the genre music to characters like Pterodactyl outlaws and T-Rex cowboys, plus the distinct vocal performances which include the epitome Hollywood “cowboy” voices Sam Elliot. ‘The Good Dinosaur’ shares as much with ‘City Slickers’ and ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ as it does with ‘The Land Before Time’.

Indeed Pixar’s latest offering shares many of the core components of their other films as well as classic family films like ‘The Lion King’ and beyond, without tackling them in a particularly innovative way. Perhaps what keeps ‘The Good Dinosaur’ from being as compelling as many other Disney-Pixar collaborations, is a story that seems like a patchwork of ideas and life lessons brought together by the popular consensus of many writers involved in a troubled production, a lot of boxes were sure to be ticked.

The Bottom Line…
Given the trouble with making it, ‘The Good Dinosaur’ was probably never going to fare well against its immediate Pixar predecessor ‘Inside Out’, but despite a familiar narrative, this is still a fun and beautifully rendered animated family adventure with enough tenderness and humour to be worth your while… whatever your age.… Expand

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, was a phrase the late Pixar co-founder Steve Jobs was fond of, and it could almost be a maxim for The Good Dinosaur. 2015 marks the first time two Pixar films have been released in one year, and in a lot of respects, this second effort couldn't be more different from summer’s Inside Out.

While the first 2015 Pixar film out of the gate gloried in its complexity, personifying emotions and making tweenage brain processes of a piece with the action, The Good Dinosaur – as the title hints – feels at heart like a child’s picture book, from the bright, colourful characters, to the simple linear plot.

That comparison isn’t intended as an insult; this is a rich and rewarding family film. That it doesn’t quite reach Pixar’s highest standards for invention and storytelling verve is unfortunately exacerbated by its proximity to the insta-masterpiece released earlier this year.

The fact that two Pixar films ended up being released in the same year is down to well-documented production problems: The Good Dinosaur was postponed when original co-director Bob Peterson was moved to a different project, leaving Peter Sohn (director of short Partly Cloudy) solely at the helm.

The film that’s been salvaged kicks off 65 million years ago, with the asteroid destined to destroy Earth narrowly missing, meaning that some millions of years later, humans and dinosaurs co-exist.

As the story proper begins, dino-parents Momma (Frances McDormand) and Poppa (Jeffrey Wright) raise three kids on their farm. Gangly Arlo (voiced by Jack McGraw, and later, when he’s a little older, by Raymond Ochoa) is the runt of the litter, struggling to live up to his father’s expectations.

Oddly, the family are farmers, ploughing fields and tending to crops, but this particular concept of industrial dinosaurs isn't really explored much after tragedy strikes and Arlo finds himself lost in the wilderness, with only a feral human child named Spot for company. Maybe the idea was played down as part of the behind-the-scenes shake-up, as none of the other dinosaurs Arlo encounters on his journey have evolved to use machinery.

A four-legged, long-necked klutz, Arlo is ostensibly an Apatosaurus, but that sort of information isn't offered up readily. The filmmakers might earn a few science points for giving some Velociraptor-like beasts feathers, but it’s likely that these dinosaurs will simply be classified as ‘the green one’, ‘the funny one’, ‘the scary one’, as opposed to any technical genus. It feels like a confident, conscious decision, rather than a lack of research (although as is always the case, the food chain is glossed over).

The bold hues of the prehistoric creatures only stand to make the mountainous backdrops all the more stunning. Paying homage to the western with lush ranges and treacherous rivers (even some cattle herding), the scenery is among the most beautiful to ever spring from a computer, and the rain is so gorgeously executed you can practically smell it.

That landscape certainly gives Arlo a rough time of it – battered, bruised and tormented, he’s one of the more put-upon animated heroes of recent times, and some of the rival species he comes across could prove a touch too scary for the youngest viewers. One scene, in which a pack of helpers turn threatening on a dime is genuinely tense. There’s also a nice balance of adult-friendly gags (fermented berries! Paranoid triceratops!) thrown in with the visual humour, while pop-culture references are pretty much absent.

Where TGD really comes into its own is in Arlo’s interactions with Spot. Sohn has always been upfront about this being a ‘boy and his dog’ story, with the killer Pixar twist here being that the human is the dog. Arlo and Spot form the customary road-tripping odd couple that’s become as much as mark of Pixar as the Luxo lamp.

While Arlo will no doubt sell more merchandise, Spot is an incredible creation, skittish, snarling, scrambling around on all fours. The inevitable relationship that develops between the two has real heart, and will have you feigning grit in your eye more than once. In one of the finest moments, Sohn musters more emotion with stick figures and dirt than lesser animations manage in a whole movie.

Certain flaws keep The Good Dinosaur from earning a spot on the Pixar podium. For all the scares thrown in en route, it never really feels that Arlo is ever that far away from home. The parental figures have a tendency to talk in platitudes, and the human/prehistoric creatures don’t feel as fresh as some other Pixar creations; this territory won't feel entirely unfamiliar to anyone who's seen Ice Age or The Croods. But for a film of uncomplicated pleasures, there's much to delight in.

Simple but effective, The Good Dinosaur doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s still damn fine family entertainment. Slow to get going, it comes into its own when its heroes buddy up.… Expand

My expectations were so low, in fact, that at times during the showing I was willing the film to be bad just so I didn't have to be the one with the unpopular opinion at the end of it. As many people have pointed out, the visuals of the movie are indeed beautiful, with vast rocky landscapes that could easily be confused for real live-action video footage from Canada were it not for the colourful jarring cartoon beasts roaming through them. Not long into the film, however, these landscapes quickly become the backdrop for our very likeable protagonists, Arlo and Spot.

Whilst The Good Dinosaur could be criticized at times for losing sight of an overriding focus or narrative drive, it stands up to some of the best Pixar films in terms of comedy, wit and emotional impact. The mere sight of scruffily cute Spot and his canine-like animations had me in stitches by the mid-point of the movie, and a certain scene involving an unusual triceratops similarly had me in tears. Side characters are generally less memorable and seem at times to be regurgitated with not quite enough creativity, but I didn't personally find this to be much of an issue with the presence of two great contrasting characters at the forefront.

Although not the next Up or WALL-E, The Good Dinosaur still manages to eclipse most of the unimaginative and quickly-forgotten animated kids films from other studios that seem to be churned out on a conveyor belt year after year.… Expand

There are definite moments of well timed comedy, but again, these are strangely offset by poor pacing and a meandering plot.

As if this strange outlier of Pixar misfires isn't enough to make you scratch your head, consider feeding your head first as The Good Dinosaur actually includes a scene in which the protagonists consume psychotropic wild berries. Go ask Alice. I think she'll know why The Good Dinosaur defies logic and proportion.… Expand

This new take on dinosaurs was interesting to see play out, but the movie seemed to get lost at the point where it is so focused on Arlo earning his mark and becoming a part of the family. That is where the magic was lost.

With unexpected frights and turns mixed in, the movie retained some quality. It was scary enough for the kids in the theater to whimper in distress. I just wonder why Pixar felt the need to follow this stereotypical storyline and arc of returning home and proving one's self worth.

Spot being a human was not as much of a surprise or oddity as the creators would have liked us to believe – this is an imaginative world, after all. Anything is possible, but instead we are sticking with the beings that we are – and a world that we know has never existed. Humans and dinosaurs do not exist together. I would say that nobody even wants to see a world where such a relationship exists, but I am not the target audience of this film. What the audience wants to see is not my choice.… Expand

If you make a film too realistic looking, does it take away from the animation experience? The characters throughout the film had an animated look which was a stark contrast to the realistic landscape. The movie felt like Roger Rabbit at times, which used animated characters in a live action film. The plot, overcoming and facing your fears, has been used in many animated films before, but it had another good storyline as well, not jumping to conclusions before you know all the facts. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. I did not enjoy the short film that preceded the feature, however.… Expand

Now this might stir some controversy but I’m going to say it anyway; I enjoyed The Good Dinosaur more than Inside Out. Now let me explain.

TGD has a far more typical and formulaic plot and premise to what was happening which is why it may not have been seen as highly as Inside Out due to that having its original premise, but TGD’s is far more fully realised and executed better.
I found the film was more emotional, with the reason for the events of the film taking place actually making me a bit upset due to how well they executed it. Albeit this, the film has more laughs per minute than Inside Out and hits its jokes well. The film is oddly a bit more mature, with a hysterical but rather worrying drug trip sequence and even Dinosaurs eating other Dinosaurs on screen. I mean WHAT THE F**K…. a kid bites off a bugs head. It’s savage and kinda shocking but also makes you laugh at how unexpected it is! I think this adds a more serious tone over the film which is why it is a PG but it is still definitely a kids film. I mean look at it like this kids aren’t stupid; if they like Dinosaurs or know anything about Dinosaurs then they know they eat each other. Don’t undermine then and speak on behalf of them saying they will not enjoy that.
Now, the animation in this film is by far the best Pixar have ever released. Everything almost looks real, with photorealistic water and focus shots that really make it a cinematic marvel to be honest. The characters in the film are all pretty quirky too, and really offer up some loveable and memorable ones that add to the film. I also prefer the character design to Inside Out’s, as I found them a bit too glittery and fluffy In animation.
Either way, both films are great, but I think TGD is the better one really as it seriously takes risks and gets rewarded for it. I would like to see more from Peter Sohn at Pixar, he really has a good eye for things and the writers did a great job. Additionally, I must say I think the ending was played on between the two main characters a little too much, but hardly detracts from the rest of this films charm. I will round my score up as I think it deserves it. Check this one out!!

The name is really stupid but do not let that fool you. The movie itself is amazing, Funny, good plot. It teaches multiple lessons and is heart warming. It is visually stunning. But there are some very boring parts but Overalll it's worth watching.

If this film had been made by any other studio it’s reviews may have been a little more positive, but considering the pedigree of Pixar this film falls slightly short. The Good Dinosaur is funny, gorgeously animated, but suffers from a slightly weaker story than has become expected of Pixar. That being said it’s still a very enjoyable film, that kids are sure to love.
As with many other Pixar films, The Good Dinosaur does have a few of the studio’s cornerstones. The Good Dinosaur features a great sense of humor, and a fun overall tone. The film also has a lot of emotional depth, in that department The Good Dinosaur feels very much like a Pixar film. The reason that The Good Dinosaur has such a good emotional depth, is the character development of the main characters. In all of those ways The Good Dinosaur lives up to the expectations of Pixar.
The animation in the film is gorgeous. While the script may be a little weaker than some other Pixar films, The Good Dinosaur may have very well broken ground in animation. The animation looks real, is meticulously polished, and flat out looks real. The score, large panoramic backdrops, and certain plot elements make The Good Dinosaur feel a homage of the classic Westerns. However, this becomes an issue as the film progresses.
The main problem of the script is that it’s unfocused, which is surprising, because most Pixar films are extremely focused and groundbreaking narratives. At times The Good Dinosaur feels like a western, at times it feels like a comedy, but no one overall feel is kept, the film switches erratically. Another problem is that the pterodactyl characters are poorly developed and they drag the film down. They don’t have real motives, they just appear and act like a mix between stoners and storm chasers.
In conclusion The Good Dinosaur is a good film from Pixar, but falls a little short of their normal standards. While the story is weak for Pixar’s standards the film is still very deep, and features glimmers of classic Pixar. Still kids will probably have a good time with this film, as it’s funny, beautiful, and emotional, just not the strongest thing Pixar has made.… Expand

While probably Pixar's most visually stunning film to date, The Good Dinosaur is also one of Pixar's greatest disappointments and feels more like a Dreamworks film than a Pixar film.
