By the end of watching this I began to lose interest as its far too long. Personally wouldn't say this is a must watch but has some interesting moments. It's possible that this one just isn't for me.

Its attention to detail, history, and tradition. An absolutely wonderful screenplay. Its comparative closeness to the novel and a storyline which became the template for future stories in this genre. As for the performances: there is not one single character flaw in this entire cast. What continues to amaze me about this film more than any other is the fact that not only were the correct actors and actresses chosen for the roles but that they were each chosen at the perfect point in their respective careers. Throughout this film, there is not one actor nor actress who seems "too old or young for the part". Nor does anyone (including an extremely strong Diane Keaton) seem "out of place" or "unconvincing". The plot and storyline could not have been better and this is one film that no matter how many times you've seen it, it still continues to amaze, entertain, and (in some ways) inform. Like some of the classics which preceded it, it holds up very well over time and will probably continue to do so. I currently own on VHS "The Godfather Saga" (the first 2 movies woven together in chronological order) which is absolutely amazing. It begins with the birth of Vito and ends with the eventual rise of Michael. Although Francis Ford Coppola does not like this version of his epic, I sure wish he would release it on DVD.… Expand

Not having read the novels, I have to say that the "Godfather" tells the story incredibly well. It is indeed long, but so well performed, that the slow paste doesn't really affect it. Moreover, the acting is at its finest.

I'm from India and I'm only watch American and Britain movies and I like to watch classics movies from 1970 and 1980 years. Godfather only the greatest mafia film ever made. This film can't watch children's because in this film have sex scene we can see a girl breast nipples but I don't care about that really I don't like to see sex in Films. Al Pacino , Marlon Brando and Robert Di Niro had great films. In American movies have no intermission in godfather part 2 , Lawrence of Arabia have intermission and also British films have intermission that film named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I'm first see Intermission in a english film it's in British film. I hate Indian movies Tamil , kannada , Hindi and other Indian language Films are so bad and i don't like to watch Indian films. Godfather part 2 is my favorite film… Expand

Oversaturated with lengthy, dialogue-ridden sequences and an excess of poorly executed symbolism, Francis Ford Coppola's alleged magnum opus falls tragically short of its revered status.

From the very first frames, the Godfather immerses the viewer in a relentless drudgery that will numb even the most patient film connoisseur. Instead of engaging audiences with brisk storytelling and gripping action, Coppola elects to drag us through a languorous three-hour mafia epic. You may find yourself regularly checking your watch, wondering when the end credits will arrive.

The characters, hailed by many as intricate and well-developed, are instead an ensemble of monotonous archetypes, masquerading as complex individuals. Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone, while celebrated for his mumbling and inaudible diction, offers little more than a tired caricature of a mob boss, while Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone lacks a compelling arc, transforming from a moral outsider to a cold-hearted don in the blink of an eye, leaving little room for nuance or relatability.

Coppola's direction is equally as lackluster. His use of low-lighting scenes, supposedly to add depth and mystery, merely blurs detail and confuses the viewer. What critics mistake for "stylistic choices," come across as glaring technical ineptitude. The acclaimed Godfather Waltz, a repetitive, mournful piece of orchestral music, only adds to the already heavy-handed tone, doing little to alleviate the film's overall tedium.

The Godfather’s narrative, loosely strung together by a series of underwhelming mob hits and family squabbles, often wanders into the realm of pointlessness. Instead of serving as a poignant critique of the American dream, it drowns in its own grandeur, ultimately amounting to little more than a caricature of the very thing it sought to depict.

In the end, The Godfather feels more like a long-winded bore, a film that not only overpromises and underdelivers, but audaciously demands respect and reverence for its contribution to cinema. It’s a languid, overly-indulgent piece that relies on the audience's patience and tolerance for dull, drawn-out sequences.
