This is a masterpiece. A timeless masterpiece. Initially, I didn't like this film all that much - I found it rather over-hyped and boring. This was until the advent of DVD, which gave me the feature I needed for this sort of film: subtitles.This is a masterpiece. A timeless masterpiece. Once I switched them on and heard (read) every last word of Brando's ramblings and other characters ramblings, I grew a true appreciation for this epic.

Francis Ford Coppola is one of the greatest directors of all time and to say that this film is his masterpiece is no small thing, dark and calculated, whether in the excellent script of Coppola and Puzo or in the inspired direction or in a scene of a wedding in which "nothing" goes wrong or in the death of a character so brutally and yet balances moments like these, even if distant so perfectly is sensational. This movie (and the others of course) taught me so many things I never knew about life. Nothing can ever beat this movie. The acting from Marlon Brando and Al Pacino was just world class; it was a match made in heaven. The other actors and actresses were absolutely brilliant as well. How Al Pacino didn't win an Oscar for best supporting actor is beyond me. This movie contains the best quotes/lines in film history and its all there in this 3 part masterpiece. It contains life lessons you won't get anywhere else. The first part was my favourite because of the introduction and development of the characters. It was confusing the first time I watched it but that's with every film that has a huge storyline like this and everyone goes through the same thing. I learn new things every time I watch this film and it was nothing shy of a masterpiece. No other film will be able to beat this mark my words. I still can't get over how AMAZING this film was. "A man who doesn't time with his family can never be a real man" WHO ELSE is going to tell you that in life?!? Nobody except Don Corleone. This movie made me more wise now (19 years old) than if I was 55 years old and didn't watch this movie. I thank my father for recommending me this movie because if it wasn't for him, I would still be an idiot.… Expand

There's is no movies I ever give 10's or do I love as much as Scarface, except the Godfather movies (and additionally now Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen). The Godfather's are written, directed, shot and acted perfectly. Absolutely flawless films.

I mostly have to give this 8/10 because I think The Godfather Part II is even better. It is a masterpiece; at times, a little slow, and perhaps a shorter run time would be justified (even two-and-a-half hours).

Few movies are as famous and acclaimed and this one largely earns it. The episodic story is mostly quiet and deliberately paced, punctuated effectively with sudden violence. The cast is excellent, except for James Caan, who simply can't act (his Italian American shtick is almost minstrel-show level) and horrifies us with his gross shoulder and back hair.

For all its excellence, the movie pioneered some less-than-welcome trends Coppola and his generation would bring to movie making:

1. The absence of interesting female characters. As in JAWS, EASY RIDER, BUTCH CASSIDY, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARC, etc. women barely exist in these stories.

2. Capitalism = gangsterism. Organized crime and regular businesses are portrayed as basically the same. Senators, judges, and governors are no different than violent thugs. The "American dream" is a pretty name for racism and oppression. Baby boomers picked up these foolish ideas from their 1930s socialist college professors and they've been a Hollywood cliché ever since. The fact that so many Hollywood honchos ARE corrupt endlessly feeds filmmakers' silly implication that all businessmen are thugs.

3. Boomer cynicism. Baby boomers emerged flinging contempt in all directions, believing themselves to be the first generation in human history to properly recognize and judge immorality. This tendency gave birth to the harsh, unforgiving hate and bullying of "cancel culture" today and -- so much for its moral virtue -- gave license to several generations to lie, cheat and steal because the movies show us that EVERYONE does. (Only everyone doesn't.)

So yes, THE GODFATHER is iconic, a massive hit, very influential and well crafted on every level. But it also embodied and popularized some regrettable trends in film and pop culture.… Expand

Other tragedy stories seem to be self-confident under this reflection. Even though this story about inheritance is covered in a crime film, the spirit conveyed in it applies everywhere; the old godfather played by Marlon Brando is certainly the biggest cast in the movie, but the core of the story is Suspected on Mike played by Al Pacino, looking at the three parts, they are all about the growth story of Mike as the core; the lie at the end of Mike seems to confirm that the lie is the power to sustain everything, the cornerstone to sustain everything .… Expand

I'm gonna be a little too honest here. I only watched The Godfather in peer pressure. I don't even like old Hollywood films. I always start feeling drowsy while watching them. I always start feeling drowsy while watching them. Not only is the camera quality too bleak, but the accent of the time was also very illegible. But this one was fun to watch. I saw it on Prime Video and took multiple sittings to watch this. I finished it 6 months ago but I remember seeing it like it was yesterday. Being from India, I have always thought of 70's films to be very family friendly and musical. But this isn't one of them. This one, in simple words, is metal.
The Godfather is probably what has inspired an entire genre of crime films. It is like what Star Wars is to fantasy, or what Superman is to the superhero genre (man, all 70's films have been so revolutionary in Hollywood). The whole idea of two groups of mafia fighting out each other in the most brutal way possible gave rise to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Gangs of Wasseypur, the Mafia game trilogy, and even this film's two sequels. That is the amount of cultural impact this film has left. Don Corleone has become a household name now.
The action scenes, the music, the acting, everything is legendary. I legit screamed at the scene where they put the horse's head in that man's bed. We see many times people learning acting by watching The Godfather films. The only problem I had, however, was what I said in the beginning of the review. The sound is not clear at all. When Vito Corleone speaks he sounds like he is swishing saliva in his mouth like a washing machine. It almost feels like the captions are saying something completely different from what the captions are saying. I finally gave up and switched to Hindi because the English ADR was so bad.
I really wish The Godfather was a standalone film. It has one of the most satisfying ending in all the old films. It really didn't need those terrible sequels which don't even have a Hindi dub. Although it has been almost 50 years since it released, it still feels like it would spark outrage among certain sections if a Bollywood adaptation would be made. Definitely way ahead of its time. I would have recommended it to everyone, except everyone I know is either not interested in cinematography or has already seen it.… Expand

First of all, I think that we need to separate greatest movie of all-time and best movie of all-time. Many movies can be considered the best movie of all-time, but only The Godfather can be considered the greatest movie of all-time. The direction was almost perfect, the story is almost perfect, the character development is almost perfect, the cast is almost perfect, the use of lightning is almost perfect, but that's a movie that's almost 50 years old. When this came out, there is technical aspects that were never been done before. Some would argue that Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all-time for the same reason, but I think that while Citizen Kane is also an awesome movie on the technical level, it is also a movie with a story that not many people could relate to and appreciate like The Godfather. Everyone that's reading this review should go and watch gangster movies from the 50s-60s. All I'm gonna say is that they were not very good. The Godfather completely changed the gangster film and influenced many great movies like Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Scarface, Reservoir Dogs, Casino, The Departed and even to this day movies like The Irishman take influence directly from Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece. That's what makes it the greatest movie of all-time for me.

The Godfather is one of the most compelling crime dramas ever made. At 177 minutes, the film never dragged, it always moved at a good pace. Al Pacino and Diane Keaton are phenomenal in their roles, and of course Marlon Brando is iconic.
