Its not perfect but was mostly a really fun film. Some story points, and scenes felt a little shallow, but the really good acting, entertaining characters and just overall enjoyable style, made it a well above average and enjoyable film

Well acted, talky, and a lot less smarter than it actually is. Its biggest weakness is that Ritchie has always tried to emulate Tarantino's style and his mixed up timeline, but never really getting it right. It took such a long time setting things up that I literally got bored on its first half. After that though, things started to move at a more brisk clip, with a pretty good finale to wrap things up. A good watch, but nothing new here. Expand

TheSaw my last movie yesterday in 2020 and I thought it was really great. The film can be found on Amazon Prime right now and is very cleverly structured, sometimes confusing and strange, especially at the beginning, but in a cool way. The individual characters play their roles believably and the rest of the act is very good. In addition, a top synchronization (I'll see it in the original sound in time), all associated voices fit, and a crude language. Matthew McConaughey as a drug lord and gangster strong as usual, but also people like Charlie Hunnam or Colin Farell, as well as Hugh Grant (strong performance, in a very strange way his character reflects the film quite well).

The film is a kind of action comedy with very strong scenes and with just under 2 hours not too long, at least at no point did I have the feeling of being presented unnecessary lengths. You are actually constantly excited while watching and you have to stay focused so as not to lose yourself too much at the beginning. Roughly speaking, it's about asserting oneself in the jungle of the underworld.

So overall I was thrilled, taking out well-placed action, the cool sayings and also a very good balance between quick storytelling and speed. Add the already mentioned good cast and the individual surprises in the film and you have a very good gangster film. The only negative thing I received is the figure of the Dry Eye, I couldn't believe his portrayal, because I liked Lord George better and the ending is a bit too "constructed and random" for me.

9/10 sales locations.

After thoroughly enjoying the Sherlock Holmes movies the dry spell is over as The Gentlemen is Ritchie's style and storytelling firing on all cylinders, not as brilliant as Snatch but it is pretty close.

The Good
When Ritchie broke on the scene with gypsy boxing legends and diamond heists his character writing and dialogue writing were the two shining beacons amidst his interesting and energetic style. This movie does the same making the characters the primary focus dissolving most of the big name actors into the on screen personas we see and build connections with.
Hugh Grant pulls out all the stops overturning his sweetheart typecast since Notting Hill into a slimy reporter with a sharp tongue and greedy nature. Matthew McConaughey carves out a niche for himself in such a way that even in a morally questionable role he still comes off as likable making you want to root for his character. Hunnam seems to have got a sweet spot as a supporting role to flex his acting chops in the right way here, since he is likable in King Arthur but from a so bad it is good perspective.
Special props for Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell and Henry Golding stealing the scenes even in the limited screen time they were given.
Ritchie's stylistic choices works fantastically along with a witty and sharp script in this case co written by Ritchie with Davies and Atkinson who have all worked together before.

The Bad
Very little is not entertaining in the movie. Maybe it could be a little slow the first 15 - 20 min, not in a slow burn kind of way just a little too restrained, but accelerates and picks up speed for the rest of it. Hopefully millennial and general short attention spans will give the movie more time than a cursory overview before deeming this movie boring, if that does happen well it is most definitely their loss.

The Gentlemen is a smart, sharp and entertaining watch that uses the Guy Ritchie's strength - riding the line of gritty realism and stylistic flair. If every Aladdin helps Ritchie makes a movie like this I am ok with that deal and will never again question his choice of directing something that makes no sense for Guy Ritchie to be involved with.

Guy Ritchie is still amazing at writing funny dialogue and building worlds filled with crazy and interesting criminals. So it is Great to see him back at what he does best: gangster movies that are funny, smart and charming. I think this is his best film since Snatch and if you liked his early work you will love this movie.
The story is a little predictable but it’s not a Nolan film, so it didn’t bothered me a second.
I hope you enjoy this film as I did and if we’re lucky we get more old school guy Ritchie movies in the future from now on.

I just wish a couple of the twists weren't so predictable. I mean, really, what did you think was going to happen when you did that? What really bogged this movie down for me though is Ritchie's persistence to veer away from his early style which he presumably, to some degree, returned to here. I get that he wanted to return to form without making yet another version of Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (both of which I liked, especially the former), but I'm quite not sure whether most of the choices he made here in order to render the film a refreshing feel worked together. Regardless, The Gentlemen is a good fun with enough clever touches to satisfy Ritchie's fans.

2020s most recent comedy gangster flick from English director Guy Ritchie can be described in one way and one way only:
Pure Ritchie magic!
The Gentlemen is, in my opinion, without a doubt the best film in Ritchies career since Snatch (2000). It shares many of the common traits of his previous work; with a complex narrative full of plot twists, an extremely colorful cast of characters, lots of quotable dialogue and the inevitability that everything will shortly spiral out of control. However unlike movies such as Snatch, and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Gentlemen’s narrative is relatively easy to follow, which I’m sure will benefit audiences new to his style of filmmaking. The story is explained to us step by step by Hugh Grant’s devious investigator Fletcher, who adopts a Cockney accent (which is refreshing considering Grant has been typecast as a posh British romcom lead in the past). However as towards the end of the movie, it kind of feels like there is just an endless supply of plot twists that keep coming, some of which are contrived and become slightly tiring. There are also some really neat editing tricks that go much appreciated, and some small moments of just clever writing, like playing out a scenario only for you to realize that it was a figment of Fletcher’s imagination, and to see the scene play out again only vastly different.
I mentioned before that Ritchie’s films have always had a variety of colorful characters, but in the Gentlemen they are particularly memorable. From Mathew McConaughey’s ruthless but calculated Mickey Pearson, to Charlie Hunnam’s loyal and merciful Ray, every significant character is unique and exceedingly well acted. Many of the characters have some extremely enjoyable interactions with very well written dialogue, most of the highlights being Hunnam and Grant. The lines bounce off of each of them so well, and I found myself laughing quite frequently during their exchanges. I will say however, that Americans should be warned. A large majority of the humor might go over some of your heads, as it is based on the attitudes of members of English society, that aren’t often shown in movies. I saw a review from IGN that gave the film a meager 4/10, and I got the impression that they didn’t really know what they were talking about. Ultimately, the Gentlemen is lots of fun, and I recommend you check it out.

The story was nuanced, the characters were witty and well fleshed out. The plotline had twists and turns that kept you guessing. This is probably Guy Ritchie's best film to date and that is a hard thing to say considering how good Snatch and Lock stock were. This was honestly as close to a perfect movie as I can imagine there being if you enjoy crime flicks. Anyone who gave this a bad review was probably a sensitive little snowflake who couldn't handle the graphic violence and crude language, which is **** sad. Expand

For those who say that he romanticize crime, I have just one question : Really? Who doesn't?! Maybe Marvel or DC? Or James Bond? Come one. If your taste is so poor, at least don't let people know about that

The movie is well written and stylishly shot with a web-tangle story that comedically unfolds through Hugh Grant's wonderful narration to Charlie Hunnam's mild amusement and annoyance. Matthew McConaughey stars as the king of the streets and delivers a great performance that demands the screen like no other as they twist and turn through the mystery of the story. The pace tends to slow a bit but is never boring due to the writing and sheer madness of the characters we meet throughout. Standouts like Grant and Colin Farrell elevate the material they are given and Hunnam's straight man performance is enough to have fun when he finally does get involved in the violent chaos of the movie. As someone who's clung so unabashedly to the notionThough some have found "The Gentlemen" to be a showcase of writer/director Guy Ritchie at his most entry level, it just so happens to be exactly what this reviewer was asking for all along. As someone who's clung so unabashedly to the notion that his "Sherlock Holmes" films are the best things he's ever done, I was wary of this return to the early days for Ritchie. I don't particularly dislike movies like "Lock, Stock," "Snatch" or "RocknRolla." I just find them a bit too showy and brash for my tastes. However, it seems the skills accrued via those jaunts through studio-dom have perhaps melded with the indie sensibilities that were already so present within the man. And the movie's all better for it. Yes, "The Gentlemen" is still undeniably Ritchie, but with just the right amount of focus, tact and accessibility to make even the most fervent of Ritchie-deniers leave the theater feeling satisfied. As shocked as I am to say this, I have to admit - I honestly think this is my favorite of the "proper" Guy Ritchie gangster flicks. Expand

It’s crazy to think that this is the same guy who brought us last years ‘Aladdin.’ But this time Ritchie isn’t on a leash.

I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy ‘The Gentleman’ as much as I did. A little muddle and sometimes confusing to follow, but the movie has a certain sharpness to it that kept me interested throughout. It’s more in vein with ‘Lock Shock’ and ‘Snatch’. Ritchie has made a successful career being influenced by the work of Quentin Tarantino, hence his given title “British Tarantino”. The cast are all having an absolute blast with the material and I can tell everyone wants to be there. Hugh Grant is my personal favorite out of the cast and it’s great to see his enthusiasm in acting again. He plays Fletcher, a gay detective who documents the events in the story into a screenplay he’s writing, so in a way it’s told from his perspective. While debatable if everything in the movie was made up or not, cause “every movie needs a bit of action”. The thing I love about Grants performance is that he isn’t playing "typical Hugh Grant", but an actual character. Although I thought the running gag of him being openly gay and constantly makes flirty hints towards other male characters got old and awkward after awhile. A joke that out stay’s it’s welcome...kinda like Fletcher.

I’m not a big fan of Charlie Hunnam as an actor, as I usually find him bland in everything I’ve seen him so far. However I thought Hunnam delivered a solid performance in this movie and might be his best. He plays Ray, Mickey’s (McConaughey) right hand man who is professional when it comes to business despite the countless idiots in his path. Imagine Russell Bufalino from ‘The Irishman’, but more physical and incredibly British. His comedic timing was pretty good as well that maybe if you give him the right material and character, he’s a better actor than I thought.

Colin Farrell was terrific as Coach and my second favorite out of the cast. He’s ridiculously cool and shows who’s boss, but also display’s some comedic chops. Matthew McConaughey was chilled as Mickey, who is the weed Lord of England that likes things in green, which is money and marijuana. Out of all the colorful characters in the movie, I thought Mickey was the least interesting if I have to be honest. Either because of McConaughey's chilled nature or the less exciting material given to his character. The style and overall tone of the movie made the whole experience so fun to watch. Everything about the movie is quick. The dialogue is snappy and there’s plenty of clever banter between characters. It’s incredibly clear that Guy Richie loves cinema whenever he’s not held back like some of his previous projects and gets to freely express his passion behind the craft. The humor and jokes ain't for the faint of heart, but luckily I’m not that soft. Some of jokes didn’t quite land the mark and often times left me puzzled in terms of waiting for the punchline. Overall rating: A disjointed, but entertaining movie. Misleading title though. There’s plenty of man, but not so much on gentle.
