All this setup, and the sparse and sometimes clumsy writing, is just scaffolding to support the mind-boggling set pieces and fight sequences, which come frequently and involve a rewarding variety of settings, from your classic split-level nightclub to a freezer room full of bodies frozen into slabs of ice.

An astonishing bloodbath of brute hand-to-hand combat, highly resourceful weaponry and gnarly bodily contortions, “The Furious” is such a feat of mass physical coordination that such niceties as character and narrative can afford to be an afterthought. Here’s a film where you come for the fighting and stay for the fighting, and are unlikely to feel shortchanged.

Kenji Tanigaki's direction during the fights, combined with the intricate choreography, puts Hollywood action movies to shame. As Nicole Kidman continues to say in those AMC bumpers that really should be retired by now, "We come to this place for magic." And magic is what "The Furious" gives us. Violent, bloody, ass-kicking magic.
