Selena Gomez was unbelievable and hands down the best film she has done, both funny and amazingly dramatic in parts, she is a force to be reckoned with.
This film was brilliant and everyone should watch it on Netflix. You won't regret it!

Nothing groundbreaking, feel-good movie about an ornery teen in a wheelchair coming of age with Paul Judd as the driver. The only palpable tension was in worrying about when something fatal was almost going to happen. But the joke was on me.

The film really seems to go out of its way to be typical, which kills any chance it has at being a profound look at parenting, birth defects, and life as a whole. Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts both turn in very heartfelt and good performances in the film. It also does have some truly funny and moving sequences that make me wish the film was more daring and less risk averse. Selena Gomez's character is particularly typical and really does nothing for the film, other than reminding me a bit of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl at times for Trevor. That said, The Fundamentals of Caring is entertaining and decidedly sweet, even if typical. Expand

Simplicity it's all that wins in this movie. A nice story with some cliches that they actually work out. Good performances by both leading actors. It could be better? Probably, but that doesn't take off the enjoyable moment.

I also really enjoyed Selena Gomez's performance to be quite noteworthy, she shows great depth here as a somewhat foul mouthed hitch hiker though her character is a used as a plot device to move the story along. Alot of the stuff regarding her father to be disappointing, I felt like it could have been done better. Otherwise, I found the movie to be very well done and I was quite happy with getting watch it on Netflix. Expand

Expand

Going far above my expectations in both comedic and dramatic delivery, The Fundamentals Of Caring is a simply brilliant film, with fantastic performances across the board, expert directing, as well as a touching and sometimes emotionally gruelling story.

One of the great things about this movie is that it pulls you in very quickly. A short and effective montage early on gives us a useful insight into Paul Rudd’s character, but not so much that we’re not wanting to find out more. Thanks to Rob Burnett’s brilliant directing, this film firmly establishes itself foremost as a drama, making the gradual development of more emotional subplots over the long term all the more effective.

I say that because the first act of this movie isn’t hugely dramatic. Whilst the odd insight into both Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts’ characters’ lives provides an emotional background to the overall story, the opening act is far more light-hearted, focusing on the quirks of the beginning of the duo’s relationship, a period in which both of the lead actors come into their own.

We all know how funny Paul Rudd can be, and whilst he does a great job, it’s actually Craig Roberts that really impresses in the opening stages. With fantastic deadpan delivery, his stubborn and difficult character is immediately clear, but also very funny on numerous occasions. Whether he’s pranking Rudd or being his annoying self, Roberts is fantastic to watch right from the beginning.

The opening act is absolutely great, but in comparison to the second and third acts, it’s not quite as memorable. Sure, the awkward beginning of Rudd and Roberts’ relationship is entertaining, but the remainder of the film takes a starkly different direction, delving far deeper into the characters’ own emotions and problems as they venture beyond the confines of one house.

However, what’s even better is that there isn’t an abrupt and immediate transition from comedy to pure drama, and we retain the leading duo’s banter for a good while, even as we start to learn more about far more serious matters.

Selena Gomez joins in along the way, and although her character doesn’t provide huge intrigue, she’s both an entertaining and lively presence as well as an effective plot device for a big shift in one of the leading male characters.

From then on, revelations begin to seep out up to the end of the film. Ingeniously, we never get the full information on a certain person’s background up until the moment that they become a major player in the film, which is notable at two emotionally devastating moments.

I won’t spoil either of them, but as we move into the final act, and tensions and complications begin to appear all around, those two moments represent incredibly powerful emotion that both bring you ever closer to the main characters, as well as becoming ever more invested in how they’re going to react from there on out, creating a consistent cycle of emotional connection and intrigue right up until the last scene.

It’s an enthralling watch, and Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts are fantastic at every moment. Roberts shines early on, but continues to impress as the film reaches more dramatic heights, whilst Paul Rudd puts in a stunning performance, far away from his normal comedic roles, providing a huge amount of intrigue and emotion throughout.

Overall, I was really impressed by this movie. It’s a fascinating watch from start to finish that handles a stark development of characters, relationships and atmosphere brilliantly. With excellent performances across the board, fantastic directing and an enthralling and often powerful story, The Fundamentals Of Caring really is a memorable watch.

There’s something enduringly endearing about Paul Rudd. He’s only an OK actor, and he does way too many bland and generic comedies… but I still find him cool and want to see most everything he shows up in.
This is actually one the better ones. It's not really good, per se... but at least one of the less bland and generic ones.
Based on a novel by Jonathan Evison, written and directed by Rob Burnett, produced as a Netflix original, it’s a bittersweet comedy about not being a **** and trying to live every once in a while.
It has a heart in right place but looking back, I’d like to criticize more than applaud the result. Writer-director Burnett has tried definitely too hard creating an authentic and hip story to really get away with it.
it would probably help if two of the three main female characters were more realistic or at least more compatible with the general tone, not as exaggerated and shallow as they are now.
Also, Burnett seems to be much better at adding the storylines than working with them, so most of the stuff brought in gets carelessly thrown overboard at some point without proper development or closure. Well, at least the central story of taking a road trip gets enough attention.
Rudd is charming as usual, but he doesn't quite have all the range needed for playing this character. He’s fine most of the time because he speaks little and acting grumpy is easy, but all in all, it's easy to notice a certain lack of depth to his acting. Wish they used somebody more diverse actor for that role.
The best thing here is Craig Roberts giving a quirky, deadpan performane as foul-mouthed disabled teen.
Roberts is probably still best known for his breakthrough role in 2010’s „Submarine“, but this is certainly a good follow-up. I kind of felt him channeling young Edward Norton and young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which is a good company to hang out in.
"Fundamentals" is quite OK but it doesn't really hold together well, if you begin to think about it. But... there's still Rudd!

It's a humorous film brought to life by mature performances from great actors. The development of the main characters relationship, Trevor (Craig Roberts), with his new carer, Ben (Paul Rudd), carries the plot. Trevor, an obnoxious, girl-crazed teenager, has a condition that confines him to a wheelchair. Trevor and Ben form an unusual but brilliant relationship, consisting of crude jokes and witty comebacks. The pair's smart banter is extremely entertaining. The really picks up when Ben, a broken writer suffering the loss of his son, takes a reluctant Trevor on a road trip across America to visit landmarks that Trevor has a strange fascination with. The movie is a heartwarming coming of age story. It is suitable for any age apart from young children, but I believe teenagers/ young adults would enjoy the film the most. Expand

This movie shows the story of Ben, a retired writer trying to cope with unimaginable grief by moving his focus of loss to care for someone who needs it. Main characters Trevor (Craig Roberts) and Ben (Paul Rudd) work incredibly well together. as carer and patient, they become close friends, sharing banter and dark humor. These characters are supported amazingly well by co-stars, Selena Gomez who plays Dot and Megan Ferguson who plays Peaches. Both these actresses play their characters very well, both portraying emotional unique personalities. This film really shows how far Gomez has come since working for Disney as she plays a cigarette smoking lone wolf. As well as Ferguson playing a dippy soon to be mother. This story is a heartwarming tale of a group of friends on a road trip while learning to live every day as it's your last. I would highly recommend this film to everyone as I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Fundamentals of Caring, while not surprising, is funny and likeable, with likeable characters you just want to spend time with. Also, while it does occasionally go for a pluck at the heartstrings, it manages never to be mawkish, always undercutting with humour before it gets sickly, which, to my mind, is a big positive.
