A great step in the career of the young producer Petra Costa, an even greater milestone for the historical account of what happened in the "democratic" scenario of contemporary Brazilian politics. Worthy of the Oscar nomination.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The documentary has a very precise and broad coverage of the facts, a very concise and well-directed line of thought, and an exquisite direction. The narration and the soundtrack set the country's anguish spectacularly, leaving both the reality of corruption cases explicit, as well as how corruption in the country has become the main weapon of corrupt and authoritarian politicians, and sank the country in an illegitimate and extremist government. Great movie! The imagery is so well-thought and rounded-up that it made me tear up. However, it should've focused more on media's role within the Coup, as well as the US role in undermining the incipient Brazilian democracy.

Petra Costa is audacious and original. "The Edge of Democracy” is a punch in the stomach that opens wide the huge network of influence trafficking that haunts Brazil since its conception as a state. A bold synthesis of one of the most turbulent political periods in the nation's history, but shaped as a "letter of love" by Costa that hits the acidity, but errs in the obvious partiality (do not expect non-partisanship) coming from a very well-idealized project, which also stands out for its extensive footage of the imposing Brasilia and its architecturally well-planned buildings, and for the claustrophobia in the fervent crowds marching through the streets while the country is divided
