He also directed Rogue, an old-school creature feature (tourists versus salt-water crocodile) with a genuine sense of adventure. Here, sadly, he is adrift amid Nancy Meyers production design and the hoariest of James Wan-style jump scares. The story turns on a privileged and modestly dysfunctional family (the patriarch is a sleepy Kevin Bacon) who encounter a supernatural menace after their autistic son chances upon mystical Native American artifacts during a trip to the Grand Canyon. It is the type of film in which characters frequently turn to Google to find hyper-specific information regarding otherworldly arcanum. McLean seems completely unable to energize the material, staging one of the most anticlimactic and languid exorcisms in a long time, and his bid to introduce grit by assigning every family member a flaw—father has a wandering eye, mother hides vodka in the sofa, sister is bulimic, brother is autistic—is undermined by anemic character development and the total absence of anything resembling interest in or sympathy for these people. Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell play a married couple, their on a vacation with their son Michael (David Mazouz) and daughter Michelle (Lucy Fry) in the Grand Canyon. While exploring into the Grand Canyon Mike fells inside the Grand Canyon and finds some weird ancient rocks. Mike takes the rocks with him as they leave the Grand Canyon and takes it home with him. Weird stuff starts to happen with the family. Despite idiotic characters and predictable scares I was still entertained and had fun with the film also Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell's performance were the only things I liked in the movie. 3 out of 4 stars Expand

Critics are a joke when they give this hunk of garbage the same rating it gave 'Batman vs. Superman'. If you have seen: The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3, Insidious, Sinister, and The Conjuring.

Then you most likely have seen "The Darkness". It's nothing new or original.

It's a lazy copy cat of better horror movies that came out in the last few years- With endless amount of cliches that you thought died out years ago. The acting was so awful and not convincing at all. Well, coming to think of it, Kevin Bacon is the only actor in the movie that wasn't terrible, because he is the Bacon.

The only scary thing I can say about this is that I got to see the preview of the upcoming horror film "Don't Breathe". That film looks really intense and way more scary than this.

Nothing like a stupid and cliche name for a stupid and cliche movie.
The Darkness is directed by Greg McLean and stars Kevin Bacon and... wait what's their names again? It's yet another horror movie that the producers crapped out to the public to make a quick buck. It's a horror film that's ashamed to be a horror film, with hardly any scares, anything to be scared of, and hardly any character development. Honestly. the only thing that's keeping me from giving this movie a 1/10 is the fact that Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell offered some decent performances. Otherwise, this movie is nothing more than a cliche horror film thrown together with little to no effort.

The Darkness gets a 2/10.

Family goes on holiday, kid finds some scary rocks, kid brings scary rocks home, scary rocks do some scary **** animals are scared of the scary rocks, parents are scared of their kid and his scary rocks and yes this really is the movie. Then comes the inevitable parade of cheap jump scares and horror movie clichés. Including the house doing weird things like turning on the taps, the let's go into the attic in the dark cause I heard a weird noise scene. Playing hide and seek with your scary kid and finally it's time to call the "experts" to cleanse the house of the evil rocks. Not recommended for viewing, do not waste your money on this. Expand

The movie movies at a slow pace, but the entire time, the audience is already aware of what's going on, they are just waiting to see what the end result is.

Classic themes such as a disconnected Father, problems at home and a crumbling marriage, it's all just really uninspired. The visual effects aren't bad, but they aren't something that would be compared favorably to today's standards.

I spent more time waiting for the movie to end then I was at the edge of my seat.

When the ancient spirits set loose.

Usually horror films are the most clichéd genre, especially when it comes to those scaring parts, all the films use the same sudden sound effects and disfigured human images with the strong makeup or the graphics. This film is nothing less than any of those, but a bit too much in the first three quarters. Like they are keeping some suspense, but it was just dragging to extend the film length and what comes in the final quarter is actually the story with a twist. So when that revelation happens, you would probably lose complete interest on this. Because that's not the demons you're expecting after all the hype was created in the earlier segment.

The story was just okay, but it was well known to us in different forms from the different films. In this, it is set in a different location with different cast, so that makes the film is fresh, but it wasn't. Some ancient spirits were set loose when a family was picnicking and it follows them to their house. Now they suffer from some unexplainable events and they decide to get rid bringing the people who can. That leads to the final act where the story comes to end.

They say it was inspired by the real event involving a family. So that might interest some viewers to check it out. But if you're an atheist, this is just a joke. From the director of 'Wolf Creek' with the decent performances by Kevin Bacon and Radha Mictchell, the film did not become best among its theme. Just a watchable film, after that you won't going to remember it a week or a month later. Very few might like it, but it's impossible to say who they're, so I'm not going to suggest or reject it.

A horror film that isn't scary in the least. It's just cliche after cliche with a pretty poor script. I will give it points for a decent idea toward the 3rd act, but overall this one is pretty bad. D-

The Darkness if full of horror film cliché and trite characters. The plot is riddled with holes and the pacing is painfully slow. Furthermore, who the f**k is Jenny?

Absolutely terrible. Everything is a cliche and idiotic. Kevin is clearly in this for a paycheck and the only reason why you should even watch the movie on tv.
