I do however have some complaints about it, especially since it ranks so high on IMDB next to movies like The Godfather 1 and 2, which I must say are in a league of their own when compared to this movie. Heath Ledger was a great Joker no doubt about it but if you remove him from this movie it's just another batman movie similar to the first and third Nolan Batman films. The other villains like Two-Face are very forced and generic. Christian Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne is decent but far from perfect; the story itself is not bad but nothing majorly cinematic. Not saying it's a bad movie but in what world is this top 3 on IMDB? I mean cmon Heath Ledger is good as the joker but compare his acting to say James Gandolfini in The Sopranos over an 86-episode series and it's not even close. Overall I would say a B+ movie. Expand

The whole success of the movie depends on the late Heath Ledger. Don't think that the others don't have a role. But if the others play a third role (together), Ledger plays a third role (alone).
However, there are some annoying points that make it unable to get the title of the best comic book movie. For example, Scarecrow, who was great in the previous movie, was only present for 5 minutes this time! And he had no role in the process of the movie, which is actually a pity. Did you want to have a cameo from him? If yes, it should have been much shorter than this. If not, then you are completely wrong about him.
Bruce Wayne is extremely proud. Unlike the previous film, which was centered on Bruce Wayne and this was his greatest achievement, here the mistakes of the previous films were repeated and we had a Batman-oriented film. Unfortunately, Batman was not used properly, and this makes Bill's performance terrible. He cannot leave a mark on it. Let me explain further: In the movie, Bruce believes that organized crime is over and Harvey Dent, as the white knight, can fill his place. But wasn't Bruce himself orphaned by a common thief? Let Ras Al Ghul and Joker be so that you can say there are crimes in the city?!
The movie is in a hurry. What does that mean? It means that after the great battle between Batman and Joker and the end of his plan, the movie should have finished the Harvey Dent/Two-Face issue. The problem is not with Harvey's character or Aaron Oakhart's performance, but this character could have been in the movie. The third is to play a better role and make it better.

The Dark Knight is the best superhero films since I can remember, a much more than excellent film from start to finish, which contains the evolution of the character of Bruce Wayne, the villain par excellence such as Heath Ledger's Joker and a endless series of memorable dialogues that, over time, have made the film practically a cult. In short, a symphony directed by the great Nolan that should still be seen and reviewed today. And above all, even if it's the 56th time you watch it, it never bores you, but always excites you. The reason this movie isn’t a 10 is due to the 3rd act, obviously the two ferries are iconic, same goes for the “a little push” scene, but I can’t help but find the whole “building full of clowns” scene a little generic, of course the twist does keep the palette clean.

Review Title: Two Sides Of The Same Coin

The Dark Knight rises is perhaps the greatest movie ever made while also being the greatest Superhero movie. Bruce Wayne has brought a continuous brand of justice to Gotham and the criminals are running scared until one man with makeup and a particular sense of humor changes EVERYTHING. Bruce and The Joker are both outcasts of society but one has decided to embrace it and the other to turn it into something good. The Joker's ferociousness and unyielding loyalty to chaos pushes Bruce to the brink of his own morals and gives us perhaps the greatest villain ever put to screen and yet all the while we have a Disctrict Attorney named Harvey Dent that wrestles with his own morals and sanity and is being pushed ever so slightly to the ledge with every action The Joker takes. The Dark Knight rises is a very real and frightening look at how easy an idea can become something powerful and unstoppable and that is The Batman and The Joker. Two sides of the same coin but stuck together nonetheless. The Dark Knight is a full 10/10 and it's not at all a surprise.

It really shows what it means to be Batman and what it means to be a superhero. Heath Ledger really nails the role of Joker, which is so well written that it doesn't force it upon you that is insane, but you naturally understand it through his attitude and certain scenes. The movie never drags or gets boring but rather has you on the edge of your seat. Harvey Dent/Two Face is really well written too both character wise and appearence wise. Really cool actions scenes throughout the film. Christian Bale doesn't fail to impress once more since he manages to play three different roles. The one of Batman, the one of Bruce Wayne around his close people and the image that Bruce Wayne wants to sell to the public. Michael Caine and his character Alfred are also great. Alfred is wise and is an integral part of Batman.
Generally a great movie overall. Must watch!

I have yet to re-watch Batman Begins, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film on re-watch having really liked it first time. It is very well made and gripping with some great performances, but personally I would put Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Amadeus and It's a Wonderful Life over this.

The film does suffer from being a little too talky, and the plot on occasions can be hard to follow due to a lot going on. Nevertheless it is extremely good, and not only one of the better Batman movies but also one of the better superhero movies. Visually and technically, the film cannot be faulted. The cinematography is superb and the spectacle of Gotham City is dazzling. Christopher Nolan's direction is taut, and ensures that the action is explosive.

The plot is a little bloated, with the Joker bent on destroying organised crime for good and making Batman cross between hero and vigilante, and subplots about Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes, and Hong Kong. But there are some truly effective scenes that are tightly structured, and the screenplay in general while a little too talky in the first twenty minutes is intelligent and sophisticated. The Joker especially has some very sinister lines that stay with you for a long while afterwards.

The music by none other than maestro Hans Zimmer, who also composed music for The Lion King, Gladiator and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, is outstanding. Rousing, beautiful, haunting, it is definitely memorable and doesn't become forgettable or generic like the music in The Hurt Locker for example. And I have to say the sound engineering here is phenomenal, particularly on very high volume the explosions sound very authentic as if they are coming from outside rather than from in the film.

And I have to mention the acting, as that was terrific. Christian Bale manages to be dark, brooding and charismatic like Batman should be. Though if I did have a complaint, he does speak in a very hoarse voice as if he's got a sore throat and I somehow did not know what to make of it. It wasn't irritating or anything, just...odd. Anyway, Aaron Eckhart is terrific as Harvey Dent/Two-Face even if his storyline was a tad too rushed, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is very sensitive and caring as Rachel. Morgan Freeman does well in a smaller role, as does the excellent Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine is perfect as the loyal butler Alfred.

There is no doubt in my mind that Heath Ledger gave the best performance of the film. He wasn't just brilliant, he was phenomenal, unpredictable, insane, extremely sinister and corrupt not to mention chillingly psychotic. I am torn on who I prefer over Jack Nicolson or Heath Ledger; it is a very close call. I admit I am more familiar with Nicolson's portrayal and liked his mix of the scary and comical and even tragic Joker, but the Joker here in The Dark Knight is truly sinister and even more of a threat to Batman and in my opinion this Joker has lines that linger longer into the memory.

Overall, not absolutely perfect but it is extremely good thanks to primarily Ledger's performance and the dazzling visual spectacle. 8.5/10 Bethany Cox

The Dark Knight is a gripping and dark tale about striking fear into the hearts of people. Bale's Batman is decent enough but quite generic, the real star of the show is Heath Ledger's Joker, his acting was BRILLIANT. Every time he came on screen, chills would run up my back. This movie is dark enough to justify being Batman while being tame enough for children to watch. Brilliant Story, Great acting and great action = 9.5/10
My only problem was the ending was a bit abrupt and Harvey Dent, I feel, wasn't fleshed out enough. Also, Amazing music from Hans Zimmer!

This movie is dark, gloomy, unbelievably acted and brilliant inI’m not personally hugely into DC characters or movies that are made about those characters, but I think that The Dark Knight may be the best comic book film I’ve ever seen. This movie is dark, gloomy, unbelievably acted and brilliant in writing, direction and content. Christian Bale is by far the best Batman we’ve seen to date, and Aaron Eckhart and Heath Ledger give probably the best performances of their careers. From start to finish, Dark Knight is a thrilling crime movie that exemplifies the vigilante problem via the relationship that Batman has with Commissioner Gordon and the rest of Gotham’s crime-fighting police squad, and it never lets you go. This is an anxiety building movie that keeps you constantly wondering and worried about what’s going to happen next and how the movie is going to surprise you and subvert expectations. This is a Christopher Nolan movie that is smart and deep without getting too complicated and hard to follow the way some of his other films can be at times. Despite how much is going on in it, Dark Knight is a very refined movie with a clear focus and flows very smoothly despite how nerve-racking it is for both the characters and viewers. But the absolute highlight of this film is Heath Ledger’s Joker. For a villain we’ve don’t get a backstory for and know very little about in the movie, the Joker is a scary, complex, and intimidating villain who gives Wilson Fisk a run for his money. From the first time we see his face until his fate at the end of the movie, the Joker is a just as gripping as the movie is and is a villain who knows how to influence, mess with and terrify people. He is an antagonist who wants to fill people with fear and cause their society to do a 180 degree flip on itself and does so through very engaging and unique means you don’t see coming and wouldn’t think of to see in a comic book movie. Heath Ledger’s performance, as I mentioned earlier, is mind-blowing; he is probably the best antagonist we’ve seen in any DC movie ever and I’m unsure if any villain could top him. This movie is dark enough and has complex enough themes that I’d even say this isn’t a movie for kids; you need to be a little older and more mature to truly understand and appreciate what’s going on in this movie. The Dark Knight is an absolutely must-see for DC fans and comic book fans in general as Marvel fans will find a lot to appreciate about this movie too. Expand

Rachel Dawes is pointless and has no reason to be in this story. She gets no development, no unique personality, no goal in life, and no consistent motivation. She is just another damsel in distress who must either be saved or dies. She is just another one of Nolan's weak and shallow female characters. It is unfortunate because she is the only main female character in this wretched movie. Nolan only uses her to make the other characters suffer in the end. Dawes also has a poor love triangle conflict that serves no good purpose to the plot. I DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THIS STUPID CONFLICT. SHE HAS NO GOOD CHEMISTRY WITH ANYONE. WE ARE GIVEN NO REASON TO CARE ABOUT WHO SHE CHOOSES. SHE'S A MORON WHO TELLS BRUCE NOT TO TURN HIMSELF IN OR THEY WON'T BE TOGETHER, BUT WHEN HARVEY TURNS HIMSELF IN, SHE SUDDENLY CHANGES HER MIND AND WRITES A LETTER TELLING BRUCE SHE WANTS HARVEY. WHAT THE FUDGE! ITS LIKE SHE JUST PRETENDED TO LIKE BRUCE TO CRAP ON HIM IN THE END. ALL THE POSSIBILITIES OF CONSISTENT CHARACTER GROWTH FOR BATMAN ARE THROWN OUT OF THE WINDOW. MAKE A STORY OF HOW HE SEES HE DOESN'T ALWAYS NEED TO BE THE HERO AND SHOW THE PEOPLE OF GOTHAM THAT THEY CAN PROTECT THIS CITY. NOPE! A STORY OF HOW HE CHOOSES TO LEAVE HIS OWN NEEDS ASIDE TO HELP OTHERS INSTEAD. NOPE! BATMAN WAS ALREADY WILLING TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF FOR GOTHAM. A STORY ABOUT HOLDING ONTO HOPE AND DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVED DIED BECAUSE OF IT. NOPE! THE POTENTIAL OF THE LETTER THAT RACHEL SENT IS ALSO THROWN OUT OF THE WINDOW BECAUSE ALFRED ROASTED IT! BATMAN GETS NO MORALLY RIGHT OR CONSISTENT DEVELOPMENT IN THIS WHOLE MESSY MUCK! HARVEY IS JUST ANOTHER MUDDY MORON. HE BELIVES IN JUSTICE AND THEN WANTS TO KILL A CHILD WHO DID NOTHING TO HIM. HARVEY ALSO LISTENS TO EVERYTHING THE JOKER TELLS HIM AFTER THE JOKER LITERALLY BURNED HIM AND KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND. HE DECIDES TO BLAME IT ON THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY TRIED TO SAVE HIM AND RACHEL DAWES. THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN HELPING HIM TO TAKE DOWN THE JOKER THIS WHOLE TIME. HE IMMEDIATELY CHANGES HIS GOAL AND DOESN'T KILL THE JOKER. BULLCRAP! WASTED FORESHADOWING AND POTENTIAL. WOULD'VE BEEN MORE CONSISTENT AND LESS CROWDED IF HARVEY KILLED JOKER AND BECAME THE ACTUAL VILLAIN. BUT EVEN THAT WOULDN'T HAVE SAVED THE MOVIE. MAKE HARVEY A SCHIZOPHRENIC GENIUS WITH RACHEL AS HIS CLEVER CARETAKER. NOPE! BATMAN DOESN'T EVEN HAVE DETECTIVE SKILLS. HE JUST SUDDENLY CRAFTS A RANDOM MACHINE THAT HELPS HIMS TRACK JOKER THROUGH TECHNOLOGY. AN INVENTION WITH NO BUILD UP OR REALISM. AFTER RACHEL'S DEATH, NOLAN DECIDES TO REPEAT THE ENTIRE PLOT ALL OVER AGAIN. JOKER CAUSES CHAOS AND GETS HIS PLANS FOILED JUST TO TELL BATMAN THAT SOMEONE IS IN DANGER. BUT HIS PLAN IS EVEN DUMBER. HIS PLANS DON'T EVEN MAKE SENSE AND AREN'T EVEN WELL EXPLAINED AT ALL. FIRST HE WANTS BATMAN TO REVEAL HIMSELF, THEN HE DOESN'T CARE. HOW COULD HE HAVE KNOWN THE POLICE WOULD BE IDIOTIC ENOUGH TO RELEASE HIM. IF THEY HADN'T STUPIDLY PUT ONE PERSON TO GUARD THE DOOR OF THE MOST DANGEROUS CRIMINAL AND INSTEAD LEFT JOKER ALONE IN THERE, THEN HIS PLAN WOULD'VE BEEN RUINED. IF HARVEY DIED INSTEAD, THEN THAT WOULD BE THE END. EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE FILM IS WORTHLESS. THE WHOLE MOVIE IS WORTHLESS. JOKER DECIDES TO GIVE TWO SHIPS TWO BOMBS, BUT THE PEOPLE HAVE NO REASON TO BELIEVE HE HAS A BOMB OF HIS OWN AND HAVE NO REASON TO BELIEVE HE WOULDN'T JUST TRIGGER IT AFTER THEY BLOW UP ONE OR THE ANOTHER. EVEN IF THEY WERE MORONS, THE CRIMINALS HAVE REASONS FOR BEING CRIMINALS. BATMAN RESCUES JOKER EVEN THOUGH HE LET HIS MENTOR DIE IN THE PREVIOUS FILM. THE MENTOR WHO HELPED HIM TRAIN TO BE THE WAY HE IS. IT IS GOOD THAT RA'S AL GHUL DIED, BUT THE JOKER IS MORE SCREWED UP AND KILLED RACHEL AND A BUNCH OF OTHERS, BUT BATMAN HATES JUSTICE AND MORALITY. BATMAN SAVING JOKER IS UNLOVING TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE THE JOKER KILLED. HE ALREADY HAD A CHANCE TO KILL HIM OR SEVERELY INJURE HIM, BUT RACHEL DIED AND HARVEY GOT HURT BECAUSE HE DIDN'T TAKE THAT CHANCE. THIS IS JUST MORE POTENTIAL CHARACTER GROWTH THROWN OUT THE WINDOW. BATMAN ENDS UP BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR HARVEY'S DEATH ANYWAY. NOT EVEN THAT LED TO CHARACTER GROWTH. CONFLICT WITH JOKER IS LEFT COMPLETELY UNRESOLVED. HE WILL OBVIOUSLY ESCAPE IF HE IS JUST LEFT HANGING THERE. WE SPENT 153 MINUTES OF RUNTIME ACCOMPLISHING NOTHING. JOKER IS FILTHY AND USES NONE OF THE UNIQUE WEAPONS, JOKES, OR PLANS THAT MADE HIM JOKER IN THE FIRST PLACE. MESSAGE OF THE FILM IS LIE TO OTHERS TO MAKE THEM FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHAT THEY BELIEVE. BATMAN HAS NO REASON FOR MAKING THIS DREADFUL MESSAGE BECAUSE ITS ILLOGICAL FOR PRISONERS TO BE RELEASED BY HARVEY'S RUINED REPUTATION. ITS JUST A DUMB DECISION MEANT TO SET UP A SEQUEL. NOLAN FORGOT TO WRITE A PLOT THAT MADE SENSE. THE FILM IS TOO DARK. SCENERY IS EMPTY AND LIFELESS. ACTION IS FORGETTABLE. A FILM THIS AWFUL DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE THIS LONG. DONE! Expand

It excels in every field it touches - The visual effects are done perfectly, the acting is absolutely Oscar worthy, the multiple storylines that don't seem too complex in spite of being told at the same time and in spite of being just one movie of a trilogy it managed to win the hearts of everyone who saw it.

The story picks up very well from where Batman Begins ended. The post credit scene in that movie had shown Joker, and I can very well imagine how excited the audience must have been seeing it. The Batman and Joker duo is used to describe the social aspects of the society, and explain how people might behave if they are left unhinged. A hero who has his moral codes and a lot to lose, compared to a villain without any moral codes and nothing to lose yet have so much in common than what meets the normal eye. Ultimately both are seen as freaks who must be eliminated by the law.

Let's talk about the characters, starting from Christian Bale's Batman. His voice sounds horrible as Batman. Nowadays many people have begun criticising it, but they don't realise that if a real Batman has to change his voice, he only has two ways of doing it - either using a voice modulator like Ben Affleck's Batman does, or deal with trying to sound different, which isn't easy when he has to breathe heavily because of how hard he works. It's just fun to see the caped crusader doing something on the screen.

Next let's address Michael Caine's Alfred. He's a good representation of Alfred. Just by looking at him you get the feeling of both a butler and a guardian, something we know Alfred to be. And it can be seen very nicely when he dresses Bruce's wounds or talks to him about his crimefighting.

Then we have Aaron Eckhart's Two Face. Unlike the previous iteration that was seen in Batman Forever, this one seems a lot more serious. He went through a hefty character development, from the patriotic white Knight of Gotham, Harvey Dent, to the deranged psychopath who is ready to cross all limits if he wants to have his revenge.

Jim Gordon is also a much, much better iteration from what we had seen in the 1989 Batman. He actually looks like someone who is invested in his job and can contact Batman whenever he needs help. He is the kind of Gordon I imagine when I think of the animated movies. When someone mentions Jim Gordon, this is the one who comes to my mind.

And finally the elephant in the room, the show stealer - Heath Ledger's Joker. Just like Two Face, Joker here has also gone through a complete makeover from what he was portrayed as in the previous movie that came in 1989. It's kinda sad that Heath Ledger never got to know how famous he has become, but his legacy shall forever live in the DC universe.

The Dark Knight is one movie I often come back to just to remember these kinds of superhero movies are also possible. Every DC character should be given such movies where their character is shown to develop as time moves on. This fire should not die out.

The protagonist is truly tested and must endure the struggle of trying to capture the Joker while the city despises him, for not giving in to the Joker. The soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard compliments the movie beautifully, and elicits the right emotions when certain scenes appear (especially during the bad-ass fight scenarios!).

The film also tackles a dark and gritty aesthetic to Batman set in a grounded hyperrealistic reality, which was unconventional for superhero films until this one excelled with this style, and has resulted in many other superhero films following suit. An influential and must-watch film, especially for anyone who remotely likes super-hero movies and crime dramas!
