But there he is, being discreet, tiptoeing back to his airplane seat after f****** the stewardess. Is Edward simply being courteous about not wanting to rouse Carter(Morgan Freeman) from his mile-high slumber, or is he fearful of making his new "friend" jealous? In another scene, the two men have dinner at a restaurant Edward uses to wine and dine women. Carter is his first man. Back at the tycoon's palacial estate, Carter takes a luxurious bath in a porcerlain tub. All that's missing is the bubbles. In Egypt, Edwards asks Carter if he can call him "my main man, Ray"(a possible code for "my best girl"?). After awhile, you stop watching the official narrative(which is depressing and sentimental), because the subtext is a lot more interesting. Since 2005's "Brokeback Mountain", there hasn't been a serious gay-themed movie backed by a major studio, even though the Ang Lee-directed film was a box office success and won three Oscars(albeit not "Best Picture" as expected). "The Bucket List" is a lot like watching William Wyler's "The Children's Hour", in which audiences speculated about the nature of the friendship between Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. What does it say about major studio films in their treatment of homosexuality when virtually every scene in "The Bucket List" is fraught with a nudge and a wink like it was 1961 all over again? After returning from his travels with Edward, Carter is surrounded by his family at the dinner table. He looks happy, but given the context, you wonder if that smile is genuine, or a domesticated mask? Sometimes the true feelings of these two men aren't even all that subtle. Listen closely to Edward's eulogy, and watch with amusement at how the screenwriter prevents Carter from sharing an intimate moment with his wife. Their final resting place is practically a homage to the Ang Lee film, and Annie Proulx short-story(from the short-story collection "Close Range: Wyoming Stories"). Two good friends- wink, wink, nudge, nudge- finally, at peace. Expand

I find it difficult to understand that this sort of movie is sentimental - it may be in parts, but that's not the point. This was about morality, about humanity, the human condition. To show you that you shouldn't blow all your life away, because of life's unpredictability. This had a meaning, a PROPER meaning, unlike other movies. I would highly recommend this movie, because when you cry during this movie, you will feel better for it. Sometimes it's good to cry, and where a movie can make you laugh and cry around the same time, there's no way you'd want to miss this. Matt Kerr’s review published on Letterboxd :
I'm a sucker for feelsy comedies which have a positive message and faith in the individuals ability to change for the better; I particularly enjoy the idea of these when surrounding the themes of such a grave finality as death. This may not be the funniest nor the deepest comedy I have seen on the subject, however its no doubt a touching movie, and again I am a sucker for those.

p.s. Not to be that guy but points off for setting unrealistic expectations of world travel. I refuse to believe that the great wall/Taj Mahal are ever that empty no matter how rich you are, and sitting on the pyramids is very illegal. 7/10

It isThe movie is quite sombre at the start but its nice to see that as it moves on, Edward and Carter start to become friends as they are put together in hospital next to each other and they slowly start to communicate with each other. It is quite sad in one sense and heart warming and uplifting in another.

Its nice that the two characters open up about their different backgrounds and families and are able to share as much as they do, being so different as the two of them are in one way but having been brought together by their disease.

In the movie they visit many different countries and there are some very nice landscape shots, which looked very good being played on my upscaled DVD recorder. The cinematography is particularly good and also the interaction between Freeman and Nicholson is good, making it a decent quality movie from those respects anyway. I found that I did feel quite attached in some sense to both characters but moreso to Carter, who's quite a quiet, regular family man type guy who's really taken out of his shell by Edward, but also by Edward who hasn't had the perfect life that you may expect him to have had.

It is a movie that might make you think and evaluate things, what you've achieved in life and whats important and it highlights, I think, the importance of friendship and companionship. You could interpret it as saying that perhaps being open minded and making friends with people you may not normally have noticed or thought to, could lead to good things and different ways of thinking. Ladies, you'll need tissues nearby when watching this, thats also true of course (and men too if your the tearful type!).

The ending was, I thought, quite nicely done, it was quite touching and comforting. Onto the more negative side of things and I think that the sentimentality of the movie may put some off, some people might think that this sort of thing has been done too many times before or that its not believable enough, with the two men 'skipping hospital' and galivanting across the world in their condition so to speak but I think, if you think about it, its perhaps more a symbolic movie or idea, like Carter says at the hospital, the list was symbolic, that was until money bags Edward convinced him otherwise. I thought it was quite touching and I enjoyed watching the characters making the most of what they saw and did while they could, seeing new sights and and everything, for me it was a sad but touching and ultimately quite enjoyable movie, with a nice spattering of funny dialogue once in a while. For me I think it worked quite well, though it may not be for everyone, especially if the subject of cancer hits close to home.

Yes, I'd recommend this movie as I quite enjoyed watching it. Both characters are quite interesting with different backgrounds and different points of views and its nice to see them being able to do what they can and to cross things off from their bucket list. You feel sorry for Edward and for Carters family too. The acting is good and the cinematography is also good. Just be aware that you'll need tissues handy for this one (incase it wasn't obvious enough already!).

You can get anyone to think a movie is deep and thoughtful if you make it about people who have died or are dying. Sadness does not inherently make something worthwhile and important. General moviegoing audiences think loud noises + jump scares= scary; big explosions + swelling orchestral music= epic; and family/relationship drama + death= sad. That’s all this movie boils down to. Recognize Morgan Freeman? Recognize Jack Nicholson? Does death scare you? Wanna watch a movie with your religious grandma other than God Is Not Dead? We’ve got just the movie for you! If you actually want some sort of story that feels authentic and not generated entirely so two aging actors could keep their SAG cards, I’d look elsewhere. Expand
