While The Blackening doesn't quite live up to its full potential, it manages to convey its intended message with a satisfying blend of humor and entertainment.

Certainly, the mix of comedy and social commentary doesn't mesh smoothly, leading to a slight disconnect with some of its proceedings, but it's important to note that the movie never deviates into a negative territory, maintaining a sufficiently balanced tone that proves that its simplicity can be effective and enjoyable in its own right.

Far from anything special, but it was entertaining. That's good enough.

I was hoping for a few more laughs in this one. They forced it a little and it was a bit mundane. Decent for a laugh or two and if anyone is giving this 0's or 1's mentioning race, you know what they're about.

Basically a loose comedy set in a cabin the woods thriller. The body count is low enough that its not really a slasher film. It is well done but the resolution and the villain is a little disappointing and predictable.

One word, three syllables; Hyp-o-crite. Another trash movie that does nothing to bring races together, but instead bashes them. Hell, I've yet to even see a white cast film that does this, because they don't. For some reason black directors and actors have to bash themselves and white folks at the same time. If you enjoy watching a movie where black people do nothing but call themselves the n word over and over then this one is for you. What a pile of racist crap. Expand

Turns out there's a killer who forces them to play the titular game, which revolves around Black trivia. Even though the potentially scary moments aren’t very, the social commentary and continuous wisecracks provide a healthy dose of laughter. The actors do a good job of making their characters interesting, while landing the comedy. Last year's BODIES, BODIES, BODIES (my review) took a similar trope using entitled twenty somethings, but the references didn't always work. For this film, the jokes mostly land and there are plenty of them to keep the focus on the fun. The final gag (during the closing credits) hilarously sums up the whole movie with a spot–on reference to authority's handling of Black crowds. Expand

Sounds like a pretty generic plot right? Well, as you can tell by the tagline on the poster, this is actually a film that manages to subvert a lot of the cliches and tropes within this particular genre, namely, the the treatment of African-American characters in most horror films. It's self-aware and pokes fun at a lot of well-worn trends that we're used to seeing in films like this. Furthermore, the whole cast seems to be having a ball here and there are some genuinely funny moments and lines to be had here, even if it wasn't quite as funny as I'd hoped it would be. By the film's final act, it started to become more predictable and had lost its edge for me, but overall, the humorous lines, subverted tropes, and commitment from the entire cast made for a fun enough way to pass the time. I dunno, it was not really my cup of tea, yes I got it that it was kind of a satire and it had some funny jokes too, but for me I think the story could have been much more interesting.

This is just another excuse for a bunch of privileged, entitled black people to literally just be outright racist for an hour and a half. The racism, as with all of these types of films, is always overt and without shame. For the record, there has never been a film where white people just sit and mock black people for an hour and a half. But there should be. Because it would be easy to come up with content.

No we don't want every single woman in a movie to be a boss lady.
No we don't want every single black person to be racist to white people.
No we don't want every single teenager to be a gay, trans weirdo.

Please take me back to the 90's.
