Decent movie, abduction/escape plot with some supernatural elements thrown in. Good acting across the board, especially from the child actors. Somewhat creepy and suspenseful. Won't see it again. But don't regret seeing it.

Solid movie. Nothing that really wow'd me but it was a cool concept that was well executed. Also one of the few movies that didn't mess up what happens to the villain.

I feel like we get less “real movies” these days and this was a gem amongst a bunch of soulless green screen garbage. Ethan Hawke was fantastic in this, and legitimately creeped me out. The children in this movie all were great actors as well. The acting, directing, and cinematography were all done incredibly well and made for an effective film. I felt like I was transported to the 70s completely. No internet, no cell phones, just you and your neighborhood. What happens to you… that’s all you knew then. This film works as a horror, psychological thriller, and even a period piece. 10/10. Expand

It's great when horror filmsStephen King looms all over 'The Black Phone' — Joe Hill, the writer of the short story the movie is based on, is one of his sons —, but the danger of turning it into a derivative film is never fully materialized. It's great when horror films have something to say about our nature or a social problem, and this is one of those. Violence only generates more violence, and Scott Derrickson's screenplay frames this premise with concepts like bullying and living in an abusive environment. Ethan Hawke — who should accept more villain roles now — and the child actors are amazing, especially the little girl, who is very likable and funny. But there's a character in there who seems out of place. You'll know who when you see him.

'The Black Phone' doesn't break any new ground, and the ending may feel a little underwhelming and predictable, but the way Derrickson delivers tension, very calculated jump scares, and an intimate but socially relevant story is what distances this one from other generic mainstream horror films.

Riding high on some terrific turns from its younger performers, some truly inspired visual flourishes and an overarching tone that really makes the most of its terrifying premise, "The Black Phone" honestly is at its best when it's more of a thriller than a horror movie. Those supernatural elements, however, are just too tantalizing to pass up, and every time we're given a taste of the creative ideas at hand, it's just a real cinematic treat. I do feel that certain things could've been tightened up (with more attention to detail being devoted towards the protagonist's arc, in particular) but, again, this was a real surprise. Not just in that it was an entertaining horror film, but a really brilliant one to boot. Expand

Mas ainda é um trabalho muito bem amarrado e fora da curva entre os filmes do gênero.

Ah, se eu não ver a extraordinária Madeleine McGraw em mais filmes hollywood terá sérios problemas comigo.

The brother/sister play off each other really well. This movie doesn't try to shock you, or get too graphic with the blood and violence. But it has a lot of heart to it. It was nice to see Ethan Hawke play "The Grabber" without chewing the scenery like he was going for an Oscar. A deeply distubured and quietly menacing tribute to Stephen King's "It" clown. The ending was cathartic, and well edited. It all worked for me, and I'm not a big horror movie fan. Expand

This is a solid movie. I never felt that this movie dragged at any point so its passing is pretty good. I did however find that it ended a little early, leaving me wanting more which is probably a good sign.
The overall plot isn't too complicated. Its a kidnapping plot with a little twist to it and after the story is told it leads to a very satisfying ending. I would have liked a bit more of a thriller aspect to this but it went more towards the supernatural route. Has a few jump scares and some great characters but is missing a bit of complexity I would have liked. SEVEN 7/10

Ethan Hawke'i, yani The Grabber'i daha fazla sahnede gormeyi isterdim ama filmin ana temasi siyah telefon oldugu icin bunu anlayabiliyorum. Korku filmi benim en sevdigim film turleri arasinda degil ama The Black Phone'u gercekten begendim. Mason Thames ilerleyen yillarda adindan cok daha fazla soz ettirecek gibi duruyor. It starts off introducing us to two teen siblings, Finney and Gwen Blake, who live with their abusive alcoholic father. Gwen has dreams which are disturbing and turn out to be reality where she has premonitions of friends and her brother being captured by a serial killer. Finney is the victim of bullies but is protected by his friend, Robin, who is tough and fends off the bullies. Robin is later abducted and killed by the Grabber serial killer. Eventually Finney is abducted by the Grabber and he is thrown in a basement with a phone. Finney contacts ghosts of previous victims through the phone which is a supernatural element of the movie. They give him advice on how to get out of his imprisonment. The movie was creepy and the Grabber character was terrifying. In addition, the high IMDb score increased the expectation quite a lot. But the movie was like many movies I watched on a similar topic. Almost everything is predictable in the film. It's just that the child killer's motive for the kidnapping is unclear. There's a black van in a small town, but no one can find it. The tips given on the phone are quite simple. And most importantly, the film is not about horror. It is an average film with an exaggerated score.

There are no scenes with nudity and sexuality in the film. It can be viewed by the family.

With an amazing performance from Ethan Hawke (The Grabber) and Mason Thames (Finney), It adds to the tension built up throughout the movie. Of course, some cheap jump scares take away from the incredible acting but that doesn't detriment the rest of the movie. You really want Finney to escape. One thing that I think this movie really needed was more exploration of character. Like as an example, The Grabber has a lot of things about him that should have been explored, such as why the grabber was so afraid to show his face. I think if there was more exploration into some characters like The Grabber it would have made the movie better than it already is. Honestly, I recommend you watch The Black Phone just for the acting alone. Still, looking at it as a whole, it is still a great entertaining thriller. Expand

I find it hard to pay attention to movies I watch because of the expected plot or boring narrative, but this thriller/horror movie made a simplistic plot intriguing and memorable. I think about this movie a lot, just like I do with other favorites, because of the incredible acting. Gwen/Gwenny, the sister of Finney in the movie, was an incredible actress. She really emphasized her emotions and portrayed exactly how it feels to be physically and emotionally abused. One of my favorite scenes was when Robin, as a ghost, was on the phone with Finney teaching him how to attack and kill the grabber. Excellent movie, and will watch it again soon! Expand

The police are no closer to catching anyone when 13-year-old Finney (Mason Thames) is abducted by the absolutely mental Ethan Hawke in his most psycho role yet. Finney awakens in a soundproof basement with no hope of escape. He then starts receiving calls from a disconnected phone by the serial killer’s previous victims. Cue the scary music.

This is everything a horror movie should be. It’s highly tense the whole way through and the entire cast are phenomenal. This is not surprising when you cast Ethan Hawke because the man just cannot put in a bad performance. He is monstrous, terrifying and will make your skin crawl. The creepy masks only add another layer, giving him an almost animalistic characteristic. Getting child actors for a story like this will either make or break the movie and the performances of brother and sister, Finney and Gwen, played by Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw are brilliant. Their talent shines through, they had believable chemistry with each other and they’re the reason the audience will become so invested in the story.

As a big horror fan I absolutely loved The Black Phone. It’s everything I want in a great horror movie, expertly blending real-world horror with supernatural elements without becoming silly. It will have you on the edge of your seat, and the interactions between Thames and Hawke are genuinely frightening. It also got me good with a jump scare so extra points for that. Many horrors can particularly suffer with a messy third act but The Black Phone is strong all the way through. You can see the inspiration from other movies in there, with some scenes very much reminiscent of Stephen King, which makes sense considering it’s based on a short story by Joe Hill. Director Scott Derrickson knows how to make an effective horror movie, and The Black Phone is one people will definitely remember.

The Black Phone is atmospheric, stressful and the sadistic performance from Hawke will be sure to scare the sh!te out of everyone. It’s not just a great horror movie, it’s also an entertaining thriller you won’t want to miss. Highly recommended for all the horror fans.

Because of that I didn’t feel the relief that you do at the end of something like this, but I’m not holding it against the plot or writing. While there’s a lot about this that doesn’t quite pan out because you can see the twists coming from a mile away, there is a lot about the movie that should be praised. The acting is unreal good. Everyone is so goddamn good in their roles. Everyone. The setting and pacing that they create is very good. Most of the effects are chilling when they need to be, but there was one sequence near the end that I’m not sure should have been there. It’s shows one of the victims in a very poor light and if examined close enough makes what’s happened to him morally ambiguous to a degree. The most frustrating thing is that you will not gain any knowledge of why the things driving the plot forward are happening. There is almost zero character development except for maybe the lead and his father. For that alone I’d put this movie at a 6, but the acting is just too good to not give it a 7. All said, I enjoyed my time watching it. Expand

The inconsistent tone is definitely the most glaring issue of the film. For every dark moment we get, we are treated to one that tries to be funny. It's a painful clash of opponents that ruins the attempts to lay down a suspenseful atmosphere. The editing and writing of the film also make it a bit jarring with how abrupt and out-of-place some scenes feel.

Like why did the Grabber have a brother who legit only appeared in two scenes throughout the film and had zero relevance? He was an utterly needless character that didn't need to be in there and yet we wasted time on him. Then we had flashbacks showing a bit of backstory of the grabber's victims, my guess is to humanize them a bit more when in all honesty, it does anything but that. Again, They were needless scenes that didn't need to happen that simply brought down the flow of the movie. And the most criminal thing of all but the lack of Ethan Hawke. He was fantastic as the main villain and yet we really don't get to see much of him at all, it sucked.

Overall, I think with a more polished script, This one could have been far better than what it was.

That said, this is a horror movie that would seem right at home on a streaming service instead of the big screen. It's well done, acted and directed. It just seems a bit on the slight side. Directed by Scott Derrickson ('Sinister', 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'), the film also happens to be based off of a short story, and unfortunately, it certainly shows, as story feels stretched rather thin in order to try and make a feature films worth of its source material. I wasn't too keen on the film's pacing, and there's very few actual scares, most of them simply being cheap jump ones that accommodate a rather predictable story. Really the only true highlight of the film is Hawke's sinister and menacing performance which was a rather interesting change of pace for the actor, along with Thames' bold and fierce performance as well. Otherwise, the film is overall forgettable, predictable, and lacks any true suspense of any kind. Expand

Especially because it's quite rare to find a thriller in which its strongest horror elements are at the same time its biggest weakness. What do I mean by this? That the atmosphere provided by the murdered boys basically takes away any concern you might have for the main character. Those moments are pretty bleak, yes, but it's the fantasy element that robs the story of a lot of its suspense, especially in the moments involving the protagonist's sister, because it inevitably builds to a predictable climax. Ethan Hawke, for the little screen time he gets, is genuinely creepy. It's a terrible shame he couldn't have gone further. I suppose that would have been too dark for this film, but at the end of the day if you're telling a story involving a serial killer of children and teenagers, you either embrace that darkness or you don't, and that's precisely what happens to The Black Phone, which delivers on its aura of suspense and entertainment, but ultimately falls short when it comes to genuine horror. I was waiting for some questions to be answered, some revelations, some explanations. I was most puzzled by the ending, which seemed too quick, almost cut off. Not to criticize, I liked the time setting. It added a bit of magic. At least for me. Summary. Bottom line. It was okay, but I was expecting a little more. A little more depth to the story. I missed some revelation or explanation. For me, an above average horror film that I would only recommend to fans of the genre. Expand

The psychic brother and sister combo face the tyranny of a small towns serial killer. However despite brewing so many interesting narrative ideas (psychic powers, disfunctional upbringing, coming of age bullying, horror kidnapping, abuse) nothing ever really surprised me. Ultimately everything is played so safely there just wasn't enough tension. Ultimately the lead character is just far too comfortable in his situation to translate any real tension to the audience. Given that it's supposed to be a horror/thriller I feel it ultimately failed in its goal. And yet it was very entertaining in a sort of standalone TV pilot kind of way (although it's clearly just a one and done film). The cast, cinematography soundtrack and overall quality is superb. While a unhooked black phone where Finney is being held. Helps him talk to the Grabber’s victims who tell Finney where they went wrong. As well as give him other advice on how to fight back.
I saw some things coming but the film was still gripping through-out. I thought the Grabber (Ethan Hawke) needed a little more backstory. Other than that, I really enjoyed this movie and it even got some tears out of me.
Ethan Hawke is creepy and sometimes funny, we sympathize for Mason Thames and want to see him get away. Jason Ransone (IT Chapter 2) is quite funny as a coke head on the case of the missing kids.
Madeleine McGraw as Finney’s younger sister Gwen gives the best performance in the movie though and is a show stealer. She’s believably tough and spunky.

But that's certainly the feeling I have after sitting through Black Phone. While I appreciate its attempt at being cerebral and stylistic as compared to gory and riddled with jump scares, this film seems like they made a really cool mask and then decided to film a movie around it. It's incredibly underdeveloped. Frustratingly so, as absolutely nothing gets answered. Nothing. No understanding of motivation, from frankly any of the characters. Not even just Ethan Hawke, but the kids father too. That actor is normally at least decent, but he was miscast here, and thst character was an utter caricature of an alcoholic father anyway. Which btw, wtf - why did the writers make these children's life the way they did? Dysfunctional even after traumatic dysfunction, from the fate of their mother, to the immediate fistfights from peers over things like pinball... It's just absurdly unrealistic. And there's just a weirdly conspicuous windowless van driving everywhere around late 70's Denver, and the cops can't make heads or tails of the case so they go to the only natural lead - a little girls dreams. That actress bothered me, she was really bad. And she had a ton of screen time. Plus, calling her prophetic dreams or whatever cliche feels like such a redundancy. But honestly, redundant is a great word to describe this film. Expand

To remind me of inanimate objects that are transformed, telepathic relationships, phantasmatic presences, clairvoyance (the "shining"), I should evoke illustrious authors, those interested not in frightening with a bloody and brutal horror but in disturbing with the uncanny, the psychic destabilization in front of the incomprehensible. Derrickson's film goes in this direction, a supernatural universe of abuses without a clear origin: outcasts, bullies, veterans from Vietnam, psychiatricized people, suicides, dysfunctional families, incapable adults, violent preteens, avoiding the nostalgia and vintage side practiced instead by "Stranger Things". However, the script is undermined by some flaws: not all the tips received at the black phone prove to be useful in the end, to the murderous revenge it would have been preferable the delivery to the police of "The Grabber" rendered helpless, the bond between Finney and his sister Gwen is less relevant than it could and should have been.

Great to see an original concept that is carried through until the climax. It also introduces other themes of the supernatural, the loss of youthful innocence, and the fight to overcome abuse/evil which engages you even more. Good character development. Strong performances from Hawke and the two lead young actors (Thames and McGraw). The setting and design also feels very very appropriate to the era (70's). But the movie's structure sometimes feels off, and the blend of reality and dream/supernatural is a very hard thing to blend and sometimes takes away from the dread or the horror elements. Albeit, worth a watch for its originality, ambition, and lead performances.
