For its genre, it is an all-out film, entertaining and doing so in the classic sense of the word: fluid, well-directed and edited screenplay, with very good soundtrack and very valid performances. There is no shortage of creative tidbits, with some visual effects (in this case, pixelated and colorful) that break the mold of traditional filmmaking in a way that makes the film in tune with the video game theme. Nothing transcendental, it's not authorial or arthouse: it simply manages to pull you into the story big time enough to make it magical while still actually happening. The situation of the early days of Tetris I personally did not know, but I am glad I discovered it with this feature film.… Expand

Wonderful movie. Not only about creation, it’s story about people who make not rightful work, which destroy country and showing what country borders not influencing on people’s friendship. Movie thrilled and you think what saw that manyWonderful movie. Great film that is almost like a documentary. I love the pixelated look of the fade-ins and cross-fades.. I feel like I've been transported back in time and I love the look and the harmonious soundtrack of the film, which was chosen to matchGreat film that is almost like a documentary. I already knew the story behind the origins of the Tetris game, and I enjoyed this film. The beginning starts with some narration, but it's not too bad, and don't worry, it gets better rather quickly. While this stays, at its core, a storyI already knew the story behind the origins of the Tetris game, and I enjoyed this film. Boring, too long, too many names to remember, too compicated. Better to just watch a YouTube video on the history of Tetris, with actual facts, photos etc. instead of "based on true events". A 5/10 and I'm being generous.

I really like Tetris. The story is inspired by true events, and probably exaggerated. But I found there was fun balance of tension and drama, mixed with some humour. I did appreciate the even pace of the movie. The acting was superb. HoweverI really like Tetris. The story is inspired by true events, and probably exaggerated. However some prosthetic were not too convincing on two actors, which was distracting at times. Nice musics and 1984 feels. I give it 78%. I recommend it if you played Tetris and are interested in politics/licensing.… Expand

I seem to recall that I haven't played a game of Tetris in the last 18 years, and what I knew of its conception was sparse in more ways than one, so part of me thought it might be interesting to see what a movie on the subject could offer.I seem to recall that I haven't played a game of Tetris in the last 18 years, and what I knew of its conception was sparse in more ways than one, so part of me thought it might be interesting to see what a movie on the subject could offer. But as it turns out, one huge problem got in the way, and that was the unfortunate eagerness of its creators to turn that story into something akin to The Social Network.

And why is this a problem? Quite simply. Tetris is a film that aims to create an intricate story about something that was actually simple, and this carries with it problematic and questionable baggage when you begin to realize that the events unfolding on screen simply don't have that level of momentum, drama and tension to sustain that kind of narrative approach.
Over-embellishing a ''real'' story carries considerable risks when you fail to make it as grandiose as you seem to propose.

Taron Egerton, who is pretty much the best thing about the film, carries the weight of the lead role quite well, but you have to recognize the limits of the script he was given.

Tetris is viable enough for you to check it out this weekend and forget it as quickly as you forgot the game. That is, if you're not a big fan of it.

I mean I've seen more marketing for the Kpop group that has a song on the soundtrack than the movie itself, so obviously this is nothing more than catalog filler. Not badly made I say, but remarkably expendable.… Expand

В отрыве от играющих, картина для простого обывателя будет с налётом лирики, романтизирующая главных героев донельзя, обдавая стилизацией, что далека до культового Скотта Пилигрима, но как-то по свойски придаёт значимости происходящему на экране, а нагромождение наивности в самом начале, рассеется в конце, словно выстроенная в ряд полоска с теми самыми квадратами, в виде краткого рассказа о всех действующих лицах, но уже в реальной жизни.… Expand

I was surprised how well this movie actually is done! The cast did a great job, the story is well written, it has a good pacing and there is not a single dull moment. Há aqui um filme com roteiro muito competente, e principalmente, um trabalho de edição fantástico, utilizando-se das imagens do próprio tetris, com uma trilha que também ajuda. Tetris narra basicamente a busca pelos direitos autorais do jogo, nascido de um programador independente russo à época da União soviética. Como a URSS não capitaliza (formalmente) em cima dos direitos de propriedade, os espertos ociedentais de plantão vão tentando licenciar o jogo, até chegar em Henk Rogers, o qual, não sei se por inocência ou estupidez, decide ir até a URSS para comprar os direitos de distribuição do jogo, metendo-se em grandes e perigosas armadilhas.
O mais interessante de tudo isso é que é uma história baseada em fatos reais, e é realmente interessante ver que a ambição do personagem em lucrar em cima do jogo é a mesma dos estadistas comunistas. No comunismo de fachada da URSS, embora se banisse os direitos comerciais, já estava não apenas começando a se abrir ao mercado internacional, mas também mostra a forma bem patriarcal que assim o fazia: políticos influentes tentavam enriquecer pela via do mercado. Nada do que o capitalismo já não tenha feito, e talvez pior.
A grande verdade é que, pelo menos, o filme mostra que a corrupção não parte apenas de um lado, criando vários núcleos, para mostrar que a ganância humana independe da posição ideológica. Aliás, lucrar com o licenciamento de jogos, para parte do governo soviético, significava também estar a favor do Estado soviético, e para Rogers poderia ser sinônimo de simples liberdade. Cada um com seu cada um.
Como dito, o trabalho de edição e montagem aqui contribuem muito no imersão, e quem é fã da história dos jogos ficará surpreso e emocionado com algumas cenas, quando a que Alexei apresenta o tetris original, com direito a referências a Assembler, Java, Basic e outras linguagens de programação. O filme acaba sendo meio nerd, mas isso vem a calhar ao mundo dos games.
É interessante perceber que à época de Gorbachev, após a peristroika, já havia um movimento mercantilista, um fantasma pairando a Europa (pararaseando Marx) e esse filme ajuda a compreender como o alto escalão do partido enriquece: detentos de poder e influência, podiam negociar com o Estado, a troco, claro, de bonanças privadas. O Brasil manda lembranças aqui.
Retomando, achei interessante não demonizarem apenas o lado comunista, mostrando a ganância empresarial de ambos os lados. De fato é um filme bem produzido e cheio de saudosismo. Sou um amante de jogos, não tanto quanto gostaria (por absoluta falta de tempo), mas me emocionei com algumas cenas de jogos antigos, em especial a que mostra a Nintendo (faltou um tratamento melhor à empresa) apresentando seu console portátil.
Vale muito a sessão, um registro interessante sobre a história dos games e de como os direitos de licenciamento são vistos no capitalismo e na transição do comunismo russo à sociedade de mercado. Muito interessante.… Expand

Yes, it relies on a lot of clichés, but 'Tetris' is a very entertaining biopic film that plays like an espionage thriller. I've found it more compelling than 'Air,' which somewhat tries to execute the same formula.
