have never seen a movie be so blatant with its lack of identity.

It's not even a good pastiche. It literally copies from another intellectual property towards the end of the movie.

We get it, the writers are clearly super-fans of "Attack on Titan" but it just gets ridiculous when you have the protagonists mention it in two, totally disparate sections of the film and then it becomes a plot point.

Also, the sizeable amount of real life pop-culture references thrown about the film removes any kind of fantasy into the world and just makes it very unimaginative. And can we talk about vomit scenes? Since when was someone puking for 30 seconds funny?

The only positives I can think of is the animation. Not even Jackie Chan's and Ice Cubes' voice acting talent can save this.

Jackie and Cube might be the only bright spots as the voice actors.
The musical choices were complimentary to the style.

The Plot and the humor compete for the letdown. Rare misstep by Seth Rogen here.
The four central characters were without charm and without nostalgia there is very little to like about this movie.

Found myself walking out early from an early screening I paid for.

Movie is uneven, very uneven. Some parts are good, others are horrible. Like with jokes, they are good...to a point and director clearly did not know where to stop, just keeping piling up far past point of oversaturation.
Safe skip, unless you are really into turtles and want to see everything made in this franchise.

Fight scenes were a lot of fun to watch. I love that they made Splinter like a real, weird dad. There was some great humour in here and the running jokes landed every time.

In general I enjoyed how the characters were treated. Even the traditional TMNT villains weren't bad in the end. It's a departure but I enjoyed the different take. The only thing I think they should have worked on was more clearly defining the turtles themselves. They've always had their very distinct and individual characters. For me they tended to blur into each other. Like you couldn't really tell them apart from a personality standpoint most of the time. Sure, they had different voices, "costumes" and weapons - but other than that they didn't stand apart enough. But that's about my only real critcism.

But I particularly loved the style, visuals, models, texture and super beautiful animation! And I have nothing to complain about the scribbled style of the film, for me the point in question is very positive.
Even so, the film is weaker in script than “Spider-Man Across the SpiderVerse” but in no way is it bad, it is a great introduction to the new turtles, and now, it really just needs to expand this super promising universe.
It truly is an AMAZING introduction to this new, and hopefully long, stage of TMNT.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, this is a reboot. With that said, they still changed too much and mostly for the worse. I just can't even, I am sure it all has been said already.

The Good:
As for audio/visual/presentation, I liked it. The animated comic sketch style works, and some of the ambient sound tracks were pretty good. The fight scenes were pretty good. I had a few short laughs at the humor. I enjoyed the color palettes and camera work. Jackie Chan and Ice Cube were the voice highlights for me. The choice of vehicles for the villains was a nice touch.

The Horrible:
However, the overall character designs are bad. Nearly every character just doesn't feel right in some way for me. The biggest culprits are April and Splinter. The mutant villains are mostly useless. Ray Fillet is just useless. There are nitpick issues that annoyed me; how do Donatello's glasses stay on, couldn't they use goggles and have glasses for the casual scenes? Why does Mikey have braces? There are large to small design choices that bring everything down for me.

More Griping:
The Turtles have neutralized and overall silly personalities, are less menacing, and more cute. Choice of voice acting (no New York accents at all, not even Raph) missed the mark for me.

Splinter learns martial arts through video tapes (really?) and has a thing with Scumbug. April is more masculine and shaped like a potato along with Leo's crush on April. Maybe just have all the turtles generally like April? The whole milking concept and how the Turtles don't respect/honor Splinter. They totally removed the "Sensei" in Splinter.

Within the first 10 seconds I think to myself, am I supposed to be high to enjoy this "artsy" animation?

This movie fell hugely flat in all but storyline - but that fell apart as an homage to attack on titan took over. So frankly, ruined iconic characters to fit a trashy Japanese animation series.

Some minor comic reliefs throughout, not overtly comedic or interesting. Storyline attempts to answer plot holes up front, which did not need addressing at all to fit the TNMNT narrative.

Complete trash.

I just don't like that Master Splinter isn't a human who's already a master of martial arts, and then becomes a mutant. Just fuse him with a rat, and let him retain the memories of both.

That could be how he finds their home in the sewer, through the memories of the rat. But this BS where he learns martial arts second hand, from a book or some videos needs to stop. Let him already be a master!

Also, the voices were miscast. Mikey should've been Raph, Donnie should've been Mikey; Leo should've been Donnie, and Raph should've been Leo. Given the VAs they had. Mikey's the youngest, and he should sound; like the youngest. Even if the VA isn't.

The art and animation felt more like a, proof of concept to me. It needs, more work. More, refinement. If they quit it with the fake stop motion, and claymation. And go back to something like, the 2012 TV show character models. Then they might have something good on their hands.

I struggle to rate this honestly, the Turtles felt more like they were 13; rather then 15. And with them constantly talking over each other, it was a bit much. Though the focus on them actually being kids, was a nice change. Which also lends to them feeling like they're younger then stated.

Raph didn't get much characterization, or screen time; this go around.

Donnie and Mikey were the cutest, so *give me more of them* is how I felt throughout the entire movie. And Leo was, passable. Possibly, even on the more likable side of Leo portrayals?

And April, wasn't a redhead; again. Nor was she attractive. Not even personality wise! In fact, personality wise; she, didn't leave much of an impact at all. She was just, kind of; there.

I think, this is a very mixed bag; there is potential. Though, not as much potential as the 2012 TV series had.

And then there's the fact that they seemed to, spell out the morals? It was like how, explaining the joke; kills the joke. Same thing here, but with moral lessons. That was, pretty cringe worthy.

All that being said, I might have given this a 5/10, but this is the second time around we've had this same issue with Splinter. In the Bay films, it was a small book; here, it's video.

Which means, my final score is gonna have to be a 4/10; it's got potential, but some things need to be ironed out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who grew up with every version of the turtles, I can say 100% this movie was not made for true TMNT fans this was more for newcomers and casuals. Ever since the second Michael Bay movie dropped (which had the same plot presence of the turtles wanting to be accepted and like humans just like this movie) we started to move further and further from who the turtles are and had a huge drop in quality. Rise of the tmnt wasn't good story-wise even though they tried fixing it way too late and the same can be said for this movie. They completely ruined the origins of the turtles, splinter, and the mutants not to mention Shredder nor the foot have any presence in the movie and now the turtles are going to go to high school like regular humans now. One of the main points a few of the older iterations make is to accept who you are and be grateful of your life, though it might not be perfect. they should've just made a whole other movie if they were going to change so much and strip so much identity from the turtles I get that adaptations are supposed to be fresh and brand new but most adaptations pay respect to the OG source material. Now the turtles go to high school like regular humans and Shredder is going to be a Kraven the Hunter type of villain in the sequel. They completely ruined the ninja turtle part for a new take on the teenager part and I hate the argument that people say they're finally acting like teenagers or they sound like teenagers they've always acted like teenagers just different generations of teenagers for that time period and not all teenagers have voices like that let's not forget that they're mutated turtles, not regular human beings. The movie had some funny moments and a few cool easter eggs I'll give it that but it wasn't made for og turtle fans to fans up to the 2012 series this movie was made for the TikTok always on social media crowd and the late-gen z kids. I remember a time when we used to get cool shows and movies and it's sad to see them butcher all of these characters and franchises like this. Expand

I get the whole using teenagers to voice the turtles but even my 5 year old was confused by the voice of Donatello...he sounds like a kid not a teen. Poor voice casting on a lot of the characters and the story was a little boring.

Fat interracial April was a little odd too...just didn't seem to fit the role.
Just an opinion obviously the movie did/is doing well but as a fan of everything else tmnt...this movie was so so disappointing.

Whoever wrote this film is clearly on cocaine and highly ADHD. I appreciate that this film actually does occasionally try to have morals, but it runs over them so badly and so quickly with incessant jokes, endless pop references that will be entirely irrelevant 5 minutes after you leave the theater, and characters who constantly talk over one another. It is annoying and sometimes makes you want to tune out. The writers clearly understand this, but rather than write a better script with better actors who properly suit each role, they just spell out the message to the viewer so there is absolutely no thinking required. And, yes, of course, there was vast deference paid to DEI ESG scoring over substance and drama and archetypes and character. They check all the woke boxes (is Splinter really gay now with no actual martial arts training beyond youtube videos? Did I see that wrong?) and it leaves no time to breathe or write a story that will be remembered the way the 1989 film is remembered. This is like a rollercoaster that keeps wobbling and banging into things and just keeps speeding up and going on rather than fixing the shoddy tracks and engineering. They already got your money so they don't care if you jump off the ride. Expand

But I still regret not leaving. This is now my least favorite movie of the summer. Some reasons why: 1. not funny 2. thinks it's very funny 3. annoying main characters 4. not nearly enough action for a movie with "NINJA" in the title 5. overuse of bland old-school hip hop, felt like listening to the boring popular Tribe songs I never actually play 6. terrible structure, reminded me of Super Mario movie where it introduces the heroes, introduces the villain, 1 or 2 things happen to them, and then the film starts climaxing. Badly paced; maybe this is just how it is when the studio insists on a 90 minute kid film, but I seem to recall better pacing of films when I was a kid in the 90's. The animation is cool, but does it really matter with a story this boring? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let’s start off with one thing: this film won’t be for everyone. There are going to be people that will say it’s too dark, too violent, too ugly, too icky and too “hip with the youth” to be considered a substantial experience.

And you know what? That’s okay!

The fact that Jeff Rowe and his team decided to embrace all of those things is a bold, BOLD swing for an animated movie such as this. The turtles sound and more importantly ACT like 2023 teenagers, cringe and all. Characters throw up on-screen for long amounts of time. Explosions can and will kill people. The grit and grime of NYC during the nighttime is exploited to its fullest potential.

Mutant Mayhem is many things, sure. But the best thing about it in my mind is that it is unabashedly itself, and that alone is a defiant green middle finger to the current rise of AI in the entertainment industry.

The film is well-animated, with bright and colorful visuals that capture the spirit of the original comics. The action sequences are exciting and well-choreographed, and the characters are all well-developed and likable.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about the film is the way it balances humor and action. The film is full of funny moments, but it never feels like it's sacrificing the action for the sake of a joke. The action sequences are thrilling, and don't feel dragged out.

Another thing that I really appreciated about the film is the way it handles the characters. The Turtles and other mutants are all well-developed and likable, and they each have their own unique personality.

Overall, my kids and I really enjoyed TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. It's a fun, action-packed film that I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good time at the movies.

April O'Neil also benefits from a new spin on her character, making her a highschooler and aspiring journalist. I wasn’t crazy about splinter having more of a protective father role and less of a wise sensei role, but the movie makes it work. While the movie is mostly a comedy, there are notes of unity, trust, friendship and family.

“Mutant Mayhem” really shines in the animation department! This films art/animation is unique and stylized creating a rough and sketchy atmosphere almost like doodles from a kids sketchbook. The impact that “The Spiderverse” movies have made on animation in film has become quite apparent, notes had to have been taken from those movies. However, the aforementioned rough/sketchy animation style was a bit much at times: A lot of scenes felt VERY busy and sometimes it was hard to make out what was going on.

Another minor gripe was the bloated cast of the film. Even for a movie with the phrase “Mutant Mayhem” maybe had too many mutants. The trailers boasted a robust cast, but some of those cast members were lucky to get 3 lines. Having Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter but barely be in the movie feels like a waste of that actors efforts.

This is an excellent film to take your kids to see, if they are TMNT fans or even if you want to introduce your kids to the TMNT series. If you’re an adult type person, your opinion may very, as not everyone will appreciate this new unique take on our turtles and your nostalgia for the older iterations might interfere.

7/10, I would say that this is one of the better TMNT movies. Maybe not as good as the 1990 film, but nowhere NEAR as bad as the 2014 Michael Bay film.

AND DON’T FORGET THE POST CREDITS! What’s revealed is pretty obvious, but it’s still cool!

The turtles venture into the human world, where they encounter a diabolical syndicate with all manner of weird creatures. The voice actors include Rose Byrne, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube and Paul Rudd, but the script is holding them back. Sure, there are lots of quick quips, pop culture references and silly setups, but much of it doesn't land. The visual style has a gritty, sketchy feel that's supposed to be edgy, but lacks the snap and panache of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (my review). The energy never lags, which helps, but it's surprisingly violent for PG and sadly seldom runny. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for a final joke. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you looked at the movie completely on it's own and not compare it to what all has come before it, it would be perfectly fine. However, the changes to the base story of how the turtles came to be and some of the other character changes just took me out of the movie entirely. Spoilers ahead! No Shredder at all in the movie? I understand there are other villains so not a deal breaker in and of itself. The Turtles learn martial arts by watching kung-fu movies and YouTube videos? That seems like a FAR departure from their origin story, like saying Superman isn't from Krypton, he just happened upon his powers one day. Beebop and Rocksteady aren't villains? Never can I remember a comic series or cartoon where they are not recurring bad guys, so that's weird. April is not a redhead white girl? That really doesn't change anything as she has that same spunky journalist attitude so whatever. There is more cursing in the movie than I expected, and the animation style was jarring at times which made me uncomfortable.

It's the combination of all of these things that made me not really care for the movie. Any one of those things by themselves would not have been a deal breaker. But all of them in the same movie? No thank you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This new movie is a lot of fun. The voice cast was excellent, specifically the turtles. They feed into the “young teenagers looking to belong and finding their path to do so”. The music and animation were fantastic. Kids and adults will get plenty of laughs along the way. There are plenty of Easter eggs for folks like me who grew up watching and reading the various tmnt iterations over the decades. Seeing Bebop & Rocksteady be good guys was also a nice change of pace in this refreshing take on the turtles origins. But with the announced 2 tv seasons and 2nd movie coming - there’s plenty of time to see how they may align with Shredder. Expand

The comparisons to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should cease immediately as they impose unnecessary and unfair expectations on this film.

While it is another hit for the animation world this year, it should also be noted that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a much less ambitious film, much more restrained and weaker plot-wise.

I wasn't very happy with the personalities of the 4 main characters, but that problem can be overshadowed by the things that come off quite well from the humor to the chaotic spectacle.

It certainly lacked a lot of inventiveness, but as far as it goes Mutant Mayhem gives them life for new generations. It separates itself by far from the last two live action films and also has a very different identity from the modest and nice but forgettable Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that premiered on Netflix last year.

And it was scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. That gave it extra points to increase my interest in it.

It's definitely worth a look.

Teenage mutant ninja Turtles is one of the most Iconic cartoon and comic book franchises out there, I remember my Favourite being Raphael and my second favourite being Leonardo.
I remember having the action figure Rapheal I would play, and imagine scenarios with, along with my super cool Venom Action Figure.

Throughout my life, I've watched a lot of TMNT Animation from the older TMNT show to the recent TMNT shows on Nickelodeon, including some of the movies which were questionable, oh and the MB movies which I guess weren't half bad.

Why am I telling you this?

I just want you to know what Kind of fan I am, I'm always open to new interpretations of TMNT, however, there is always a line since this is actually one of the harder franchises to make animation and content for.

Seeing the Trailer for this movie made me excited to see TMNT Animation back on the big screen, but of course, I like all other fans disliked one thing, I'll come back to this later.

So how was the movie?

It's ok, nothing that's like woah holy f*ck that was amazing action and story. It's a piecemeal film. There are more satisfactory scenes than bad ones.

This movie is funny, It's entertaining, it's well animated with some different aesthetics.

Did splinter just...Oh god, Who thought that was good?

Should you rush out and see this, If you have kids then yes. If you're a long-time TMNT Fan, Wait for streaming, some of you may be disappointed.

Anyway let's talk about it, April O'Neil, the voice actor, the character and her purpose are really good, but there is one problem. It's her design... Yes, I'm talking to you Mister Castillo, the fact that you have no pride in admitting you f*cked up her design really shows that you are a hollow shell of a person, You disgust me.

eg. If I made a character that was Indian because of their background, namesake and physical features that are characterised by the colour of their skin and then decide I'll give you the rights to that character. Would you then decide to change those features based on your own perspective, let's say we change the character's skin to black or white or coloured, is that ok?
If yes, then you are a moron and please downvote my review, immediately. If not, then you understand that the characters created whether real or not are important.

April O'neils Design in this movie is one of the worst designs I have ever seen, let's forget about her skin colour, she is fat, ok let's forget about her weight, she Shes Ugly, Ok let's forget that she's ugly, What is she?

April O'Neil is meant to represent a Journalist/Reporter that the ideal female would look up to and be inspired by, this includes her physical appearance. At no point in this film did they use her physical appearance to drive her character.

"Oh, Recon you're just a Pedophile" These are comments that people would tell me. (Metacritic don't try and delete this, it's time to face reality).

Well, you are wrong, I was expecting a young April O'Neil whom Leonardo or Micheal Angelo would appeal to at first glance, you know so it makes sense. I was not expecting April to have protruding or sexual features.

Now that I'm done ranting I'm going into ratings:
- Visuals: 9/10, It's not for everyone, it was a little dark in the theatre.

- Characters: 8/10, Good use of character personalities, Jackie Chan Really shines as Splinter.

- Dialogue: 7/10, Sometimes they talk over each other too much it becomes annoying. Some are also basic and non-sensical.

- Story: 6/10, It's Passable and Simple, sometimes illogical at times.

- Plot and Pacing: 8/10, It just loses itself here and there.

- Music: 7/10, Some miss use of music, But I would suspect that some people would enjoy it.

Overall we have an 8/10, well done. but there is a problem, I factor in lore and Source material in my reviews so sadly the Race swap of April O'Neil will give you a -1, look I like the character's personality, the jokes, her dialogue and everything, it's just her design does not even match who she is based from the source material, not even close.
I keep saying in my reviews that I rate animation fairly and easily but there are lines that we should never cross, ever, that's just reality.

So overall this movie is a 7/10.

Rogen said from the start he wanted to focus on the "Teenage" aspect of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and he nailed it! For most people, the formidable teenage years can be the most difficult as we struggle to find who we are and where our place is in the world. Imagine going through all of that while at the same time you're a mutated turtle who lives in the sewer with your rat dad. The story is filled with heart as we see the brothers go through these emotions as they long to fit into and be accepted by a world that they've been taught will undoubtedly reject them.

The art style is incredibly unique and a treat to watch. It's got a "doodling in your school notebook" feel to it that really pops, and the soundtrack pairs with the animation like pepperoni on pizza. My son and I were both bobbing our heads to the beat many times.

The performances are what truly standout with this movie though. Jackie Chan as Splinter and Ice Cube as Superfly give such great performances and the quartet of actual teenagers as the four turtle brothers is something I didn't even know I wanted as a TMNT fan until now. It just makes sense. The way they talk over each other and spout their inside jokes and generational-specific slang, this is definitely the first time the Turtles have come across as actual teenagers. Ayo Edebiri brought April O'Neil to a more human level than just "damsel in distress" as she was in the original cartoon and really captured that chaotic and confused feeling of suddenly being pulled into the world of an underground group of mutated anthropomorphic animals. The icing on this delicious cake is the supporting cast of fellow mutants like Ray, Mondo Gecko, Wingnut, Bebop and Rocksteady. My only complaint is they were criminally underused because what little time we had with them was incredibly fun and funny! They left me wanting more!

While this is definitely a movie for the next generation of Turtle fans (and that's okay!!) there are plenty of moments, Easter eggs and just downright enjoyability for all fans of TMNT! Cowabunga!!

While attributing myself to an ‘I want to become a Ninja Turtle’ generation from the 1990s in Ukraine, I intentionally diminished expectations before going to the cinema premiere, and the new reincarnation, in fact, made my yesterday.

The visual. The 2023 version feels better than the latest animated versions and two mediocre cinematic reboots (2014/2016). The bulky boxy styling models and environment looks outdated and fresh at the same time, with the recent ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ as the closest reference. My personal favorite is the lightning and the movement of cars in night scenes.

The story. It combines the renewed ‘becoming’ and the absence of Schredder (that’s a relief). A few brilliant parts, not very much intriguing, in fact, boring in the final ‘big boss’ sequence, but interesting enough for the 100-minute appearance.

The characters. While the ultimate antagonist seems to be another ‘I want to kill everyone because I am evil and smart’, the Turtles characters gave me a smile. The magnificent four as well as Splinter are not superheroes, but rather more prosaic and vulnerable creatures from the NY sewer, with a couple of dozens of well-executed jokes and as many failed ones.

It is hard to guess the acceptance of this story by a new generation (I believe, they must have their own heroes), but the guys in their 30/40-odd years have the means to look for the nearest big screen for a piece of nostalgia.

But it's so fun! It looks astounding, has insanely creative designs, exciting and well storyboarded action, is full of cool likeable characters and jokes are plenty and land pretty often. It really embraces it's gross out aesthetics which is quite refreshing and I'm sure that I'd love it as a kid even more than now.

Why would anyone make a movie about zany cartoon turtles getting into hijinks for a demographic cohort that are now in their 30s and 40s? Of course this movie was retooled for members of Gen Z and younger! It’s a movie for kids! I’m old enough to have played with the action figures and to have watched the cartoons in the 90s and now I am at an age where this intellectual property is no longer relevant to me. It’s kind of sad, in a way, but I think that’s just part of growing up. I’m giving this an obligatory 5 but, full disclosure, I didn’t actually watch this movie— I am in my 30s and have a life full of responsibilities and passions and meaningful relationships and carving out time to watch a movie very obviously not made for me would be short-changing myself.

Started off good. I was impressed by the animation style but it got really cheezy and bad shortly after. Donatello sounds like a young girl child. Tough one to get over. The movie is kinda cool but there are just weird things that make it lame. Im very mixed on it. Its another crappy remake that confirms there is no creativity in Hollywood anymore. They steal ideas from a past generation and ruin it. Its a really bad movie if you're a fan of old school TMNT. Expand

If you've ever thought to yourself, 'Gee, I wish Seth Rogen would get blitzed out of his skull and make a Ninja Turtles movie whose plot is primarily based on that line!' then this is the movie for you.

Would have rated 0/10, but Ice Cube's voice acting was incredible. However, Maya Rudolph's talents were completely wasted.

The humour is unequal, but at least the energy of the dialogues is really decent. The action scenes are strong and well done. Even if very fast at times, it is not hidden by the animation. The animation is really great to look at. I prefer it to the Spiderverse. Cleaner and less seizure inducing. The music is dynamic. The choices of them can be debatable, because some fits more into the action then others. The journalist girl could be seen as a woke agenda here, but really, I though it was acceptable in this New York environment. I give it 75%. I though it was a good looking, action pack anime. Expand
