Ms Morton's performance, ranks up there with B. Keaton. I loved it. Way to go Sam. You too Sean.

I loved the acting. I loved the music. I loved the aesthetic. I loved the feel. Simply sweet. This is one of my favorite movies ever.

Not a pleasant or particularly riveting show, but again we see how Woody Allen can bring a photoplay into a sharply focused and breathtakingly concise conclusion - in this case explaining how Penn's character was finally able to become one with his art. So inevitably the movie gets better upon later reflection. Expand

A rewarding and satisfying drama, that satirizes biopics while embodying Allen's love for jazz into a great character, brought to life with a terrific performance by Sean Penn. Sweet and Lowdown is Allen's finest dramatic work.

I enjoyed it as a period drama, even though it is decidedly cheesy at times and the comedy is mostly visual, somewhat slapstick in nature. Samantha Morton is quite charming too as the very facially expressive mute lady, Hattie. Of course a film like this is very much centered on music and I enjoyed the 'bright and breezy' style of jazz music played in the background of some scenes. I prefer this to some other Woody Allen films, certainly. I quite enjoyed this film and so I'd recommend it to others, yes. Expand

Sweet and lowdown is a brilliant film, the jazz music is great the cinematography is stunning Sean Penn is very good and his mute girlfriend (Samantha Morton) is a scene stealer, a throwback to the Silent days of Cinema. One of Woody Allen's best.
