Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci play 20-year partners who take a road trip across England. It’s an especially poignant journey, because one of them is facing the escalating symptoms from his fatal disorder. Obviously, such intense circumstances demand potent performances and this duo captures their trying complexities with subtle grace that leads to genuine emotional impact. Writer/director Harry Macqueen tells the story with understated, yet effective sensitivity. This universally important medical dilemma is faced with modest grace in an intimate and affecting love story. Expand

An elegant and sober drama about illness, relationship, love, acceptance, letting go, and saying goodbye.

Perhaps it doesn't expose so much, nor does it propose much in terms of everything that a drama of this kind entails, but it's also appreciated that it's not a merciless whirlwind of tears and pain.

I mean, the situation the protagonists face is really painful, but that doesn't imply that the same situation should become a miserable affair, like many other films tend to do in order to emotionally manipulate their viewers.

Very good performances by its two leads, although I think they will be left out of any mention in the next awards season.

Admittedly, it's a somewhat tried and true formula, though it has some new life infused into it here with its same-sex couple protagonists and its gorgeously filmed road trip backdrop. To be sure, the film's heartwarming and heartbreaking narrative feels a bit too restrained at times and somewhat stretched out in the final act, but it always comes across as sincere and eminently moving. What stands out most, though, are the stellar performances of Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, who deliver magnificent portrayals and exhibit a remarkable, heartfelt, amazingly genuine chemistry throughout. It's also refreshing to see a gay-themed film that addresses the kinds of everyday issues that the rest of the world deals with and not just relying on storylines drawn from a handful of familiar subjects that have been endlessly overdone. "Supernova" may not be everything that it could have been, but it certainly is an engaging, heart string-tugging offering that's well worth the time. Expand

Here in this film, what is most appreciated is that the story transmits emotion without resorting to simpleton or tear-jerking sentimentality; that and through outstanding performances by Firth and Tucci. To see a weekend evening, stress free.

There was something rich and organic about this picture that I really appreciated. It didn't look scripted or rehearsed at all - in a GOOD way. However, it was a little bit too slow for my liking, and I found the ending dragged quite a bit. There was something rich and organic about this picture that I really appreciated. I never really tear upThis is some of the heaviest stuff I've watched so far this year. Sam and Tusker - the protagonist couple - just have this brilliant dynamic and the whole movie turns from a fun field trip into a melancholic drama. I never really tear up while watching films, but I was bloody close during the last 20 or so minutes. It's only 90 minutes long, but it felt like 3 hours, I don't know whether that was a good or a bad thing, maybe I just wanted to escape this carnage mentally, but also felt tied to the screen at the same time. The characters just feel so real, when Tusker throws a party for him and Sam, everything involved just feels as if someone had filmed a - surely tragic - gathering and Tusker and Sam can just be who they are, an old couple with its regular problems, no corny dialogue needed.
If you're in a good mood and want to change this, I definitely recommend watching this.

It's a thought provoking film - it'd be hard not to feel sorry for both of the main characters. I would definitely recommend this poignant film, yes. Expand
