When a real human bravery wasn't appreciated till the computers confirmed it.

Another excellent biographical drama for Tom Hanks in the title role. He has transformed from captain Phillips to captain Sully. Another great addition to Clint Eastwood's filmography as well, he never disappoints us. This film was based on the real event of the January 15, 2009. When a US passenger plane got hit by birds just after the take off, losing both the engines, landed on the New York's Hudson river. So the film reveals the heroic event, as well as followed by the investigation of the crash landing.

As it is a Hollywood film what should I expect, another American bravery? Yep, but still a good film, very engaging plot. It's not all about the plane event, because I thought one of the film poster is a spoiler. So the film covers more story, about the drama surrounding the main event. Especially saving the lives, that inspires even for the outside Americans. The entire narration is about two-three day affair, but most of the film was about the crash landing. From the actors to the visuals, all were top class. One of the best biopic that's not based on one's whole life, but one heroic attempt which will be remembered him and this film for forever.

Sully is tremendously tense and truly demonstrates just how miraculous Chesley Sullenberger's successful Hudson river landing was. The combination between Tom Hanks' and Aaron Eckhart's characters work brilliantly with extreme realism.

These based on real dramas are so easy to mess up, dropping into the same cliched scenes and dialogue. Clint Eastwood is a talented director who knows when to use less, and who is better at communicating through so little dialogue like Tom Hanks? His best roles focus on seeing situations through his eyes and this is no exception. Aaron Eckhart, as always, does a fantastic job holding that second strong role. The non linear approach was also critical to keeping the story from falling flat, by giving us scattered bits and pieces of a disaster that was over in less than three minutes throughout the film. I thought there were a few too many could-have-been flashbacks that took away from the narrative, but that's my only real gripe. Expand

Terrifically detailed work directed by a living legend, and starring one too!
This is based on a true incident from a few years ago, where a veteran pilot actually was able to land his plane in the Hudson river in NYC and with all on board surviving. It is a terrifically detailed but slow moving work by 86 year old living legend Clint Eastwood starring the Jimmy Stewart/everyman of our era, in two time - should have been three time -Oscar winner Tom Hanks as the quietly unheroic hero pilot. (You were robbed of the statuette in 2000 for "Cast Away", Tom. Who else could play opposite a volleyball for two hours and make it work?).

I'm reminded of Eastwood's 2003 Academy Award winning "Mystic River" in that he deliberately takes his time in adapting the book, as he does here as well. The script is a little odd, shifting back and forth between the events of the day itself and the hearing to decide whether the pilot and co-pilot were at fault for not heading to one of the nearby airports. This leads to a little awkwardness during the first third of the film, but then works out just fine. We see the big event twice - The epic landing of the jet is more than worth seeing in and of itself.

Aaron Eckhart, for once, gets to play a good guy, the co-pilot. How nice to see Delphi Harrington, a much underused actress, as the passenger in the wheelchair. She was marvelous as an intelligent, sophisticated woman in the long-gone soap opera Where the Heart Is and was also believable as a trashy Southern murderess on Guiding Light and as a trashy Southern prostitute on All My Children. Here she plays a somewhat stereotypical New York Jewish mother. As a daughter she gets Valerie Mehaffey of Desperate Housewives.

Sully shows something rarely seen in movies these days, the simple heroism of ordinary people, like the ferry boat crew members who rescue the passengers from the plane.

Be sure to stay for the credits, where you will see a reunion of many of the actual passengers and crew from the flight. And as Columbo would say, just one more thing - The last line of the movie is a hoot and got a big laugh! Highly recommended.

'Sully' is great. Tom Hanks absolutely nails it as the titular character, he is undoubtedly the perfect cast for the role. An outstanding actor, as we all know. The plot is told in a way that I personally enjoyed, I liked seeing the different snippets of time.

Though no-one is on the same level as Hanks in this, there are a few other good performers. Aaron Eckhart (Jeff) does well, while there are less important roles for people like Anna Gunn (Elizabeth) and Michael Rapaport (Pete). I have no issues with the casting, that's for sure.

It's a crazy true story, mad that it happened way back in 2009 - feels more recent, strangely. I assume it uses the usual creative license that practically every film does, which I'm fine with. It delivers as a quality film, which is all I truly care about.

Much like Eastwood's AMERICAN SNIPER, this isn't told in a straight narrative line, it jumps around. At times this works for context, at other points it feels disjointed. Overall, however, this is solid work as a fine start to the 2016 awards season.

This is a big incident being told in a small time frame for the most part. Therefore, once the birds have done there damage and the plane crash lands there is nowhere much else for the film to go. Sure, we have endless 'what if' reconstructions and the inevitable investigation into the cause of the plane's downing, but this is all filler even if the recreations of the crash are well realised. The investigation by officials into Sully's actions are a bit on the ploddy side, only sparking any interest very occasionally. The scenes with Laura Linney are just impossible. The actress plays the part of the rather selfishly concerned wife in a dreary and tiresome manner. Her scenes add nothing to the drama, but add much to the film's descent into the average. Thankfully, the film is mercifully short. Expand

The film stars Tom Hanks, Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhart and was directed by Clint Eastwood who, like rare wine, seems to get better with each passing year. Told via flashbacks and background events, the audience is made an integral part of the fateful events that the passengers on the New York to Charleston flight experienced that cold winter morning as their plane departed from Laguardia Airport and ended up in the icy waters of the Hudson. The film is indeed a testament to the expertise of the pilot whose split second performance is later evaluated and scrutinized by the investigating agencies using the benefit of hindsight with their self-serving 20/20 vision. It’s always impressive to see a film where everyone knows the outcome yet a feeling of tension and anxiety can be so effectively created in spite of that. Kudos to Mr. Eastwood whose directorial skills show themselves in each frame and scene and make this a truly positive movie to see. A Washington Post article jokingly said that one should never travel with Mr. Hanks for as "Captain Phillips", the Federal Express employee in "Cast Away" and the commander of "Apollo 13", his trips almost always seem to encounter problems. That being said, I urge all to travel this time with Mr. Hanks as Captain Sullenberger on his 280 second flight from land to water, It is a quality venture that the movie traveler most certainly will enjoy. I give the film a 9 for no matter what seat you are in, it will truly be a "first class" experience. Expand

It is named after Captain Sullenberger, or "Sully" for short. The movie is based on a book 'Highest Duty' that Sully co-wrote.

I am a big fan of Clint Eastwood as a director, and my expectations were high, especially considering Tom Hanks starring in this movie, and high ratings from both critics and audience.

Hanks's performance was as good as I was hoping for. I enjoyed cinematography for the most part, even though sometimes computer-generated graphics were too obvious.

Directing for me was not very impressive, however. People in some episodes did not look authentic or believable. Additionally, Eastwood over-dramatized National Transportation commission's incident investigation, making them look like bad guys trying find fault in Captain Sully's actions. A quick look at Wikipedia proved that it was not the case. I understand the importance of artistic license, and that the movie is not a documentary, but the event was too recent, and Hollywood should not re-invent history to destroy real peoples' reputation.

Overall the movie is not bad and is worth watching but it is definitely not one of Eastwood's best.

He would be on every talk show, in every newspaper, on the cover of every magazine, an all around media darling.

Now 7 and ½ years later, director Clint Eastwood has made a movie simply called “Sully”, starring America’s nice guy Tom Hanks. Though the crash is the center of the movie the screenwriter, Todd Komamicki, has the movie revolve around Sully, the man before and after the crash, especially when he is being questioned as to whether he could have gotten back to LaGuardia airport, or had made it to Teterboro airport in New Jersey, by the National Transportation Safety Board as if trying to blame Sully for ‘pilot error’. (The NTSB claims that the movie is inaccurate regarding the hearings.)

Director Eastwood handles Sully’s nightmares following the landing, his life before and after the near disaster and telephone talks with his wife, Lorrie, who is at home. He shows the media surrounding Sully in New York and Lorrie at home. He and his cinematographer Tom Stern recreate the crash a couple of times and make each time harrowing even though you know the ending. From the moment the birds causing both engines to burn out the 208 seconds that Sully will always been known for will have you tensing up.

Kudos to Eastwood for keeping the film down to a sharp, fast moving 96 minutes and picking, directing a perfect cast. Tom Hanks delivers an Oscar nominating worthy performance just as Aaron Eckhart, as his co-pilot Jeff Skiles, deserves a best supporting nomination. Laura Linney, who has most of her scenes on the phone, as Lorrie Sully's wife, gives a moving performance while Anna Gunn is a standout on the NSTB.

For a change Eastwood has the music in the background almost unnoticeable taking nothing away from the movie though the Marriott hotels are sure noticeable in any scenes showing New York!

“Sully” is a good movie, certainly worth seeing not only for the story of Sullenberger but for Hanks best performance in awhile!

Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood have done a really good job, and the non-linear structure makes it a worthwhile watch. I'm sure this movie will be in the running for multiple gongs during awards season. Aaron Eckhart has performed his role well, too. I can't say for one moment that I didn't feel like watching the movie throughout, it kept me immersed (no pun intended)

However, I have a few complaints.
(**Slight spoilers ahead**)
Firstly, I think opportunities for character development were cut or otherwise lost. Sully's experience with the military, his struggles at home and his 'hallucinations' could all have been expanded upon, to give us a greater insight into his character.
While we do sympathize with and root for him, his character is a paddling pool when it should have been an ocean.
Also, I think the NTSB is unnecessarily demonized. They are only doing their job, after all, which is to check all angles of the story to properly investigate it. The film is somewhat short in length.

Despite all these petty niggles, I think Sully is a worthwhile watch and a biographical film done right.

The film spends a ridiculous amount of time on the investigation of Sully and that entire part of the film feels like it was ripped straight out of the script from Denzel Washington's similar film, "Flight". Other than Hanks' performance, the effects do help keep the movie from being a complete bore. All in all, it's a fictionalized biopic with drama of a situation we already know the resolution to and manufactured "drama" for the sake of creating artificial suspense.

"Sully" is a solid Blu-ray rent or buy but not worth paying the inflated theater costs to see.

Remember when a plane flew into the Hudson Bay? Remember all 155 passengers on board who miraculously survived the impact? Remember the pilot responsible for making the quick move that prevented this delay from becoming a disaster?

Now, seven and a half years after these events shook the world, the story of Captain Chesley Sullenberger is brought to the screen by director Clint Eastwood and actor Tom Hanks. Based on the autobiography, “Highest Duty,” Sully expresses how the passengers’ fear was vanquished by their pilot’s risky and controversial thinking in a fashion that will inspire dads and business professionals across the nation.

It begins with a nightmare by the infamous pilot of his airplane flying uncontrollably into the city, the sounds of the plane booming real enough to rattle you the right way. He wakes up to yet another news report of his catastrophic Flight 1549 landing from January 15, 2009. This reality is simply too overwhelming for him to handle, so much so, that he can’t even go jogging without facing a near-hit by a taxi cab. Neither he nor his family can escape from the reporters, talk shows, and high city court who won’t shut up about the controversy. It’s almost as if 911 is happening all over again, except consequentially by one of America’s own heroes.

He explains in flashback precisely why he allowed the landing in spite of claims that the left engine could still have been idling. It all follows a nonlinear storytelling structure similar to what Stanley Kubrick or Quentin Tarantino have popularized. Maybe this flashback structure wasn’t necessary in the telling of the story, or maybe it just wasn’t edited properly. But either way, it got frustratingly confusing as to where or when I was in time, especially when it returns me to a scene that if left off of a half hour earlier.

If you were to go ask anyone who was there on that day of the Hudson Bay landing, they would go on to say from backed up evidence that these events are true to what happened; but this retelling doesn’t feel quite true enough. Even right from the release of the first trailer, I knew that Tom Hanks wasn’t going to fit the part, particularly because he does not look the part at all. Basically all the makeup artists do to make him look authentic is spray-paint his hair white and glue a moustache onto his face, which looks completely unconvincing that he is representing the real flight hero. Then if you look everywhere else around him, there is an excessive amount of branding for New York’s culture. The words “New York” are everywhere within the overused wide-shots of the city, something that not even the fake-looking CGI planes can distract us from.

Yet I still wouldn’t say that it makes this a horrible viewing experience. Far from it, in fact. Sully is backed up with plenty of satisfactory performances by the whole cast, particularly Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight, Thank You for Smoking), who plays Captain Sullenberger’s first officer and best friend. There’s also Laura Linney (Mystic River, The Truman Show) who plays the captain’s stay-at-home wife. She’s not the most well-developed or memorable of characters, but her love for her husband still comes out satisfactorily well.

Yeah, that’s a good word to sum up this movie. It’s satisfactory. It’s certainly better than average, but not the best thing ever like I hoped it would. It’s just plain satisfactory as good, wholesome, inspirational entertainment. It’s not that bad for tributing a man who was so big he had an alcoholic beverage named after him (it’s made with a shot of Grey Goose Vodka and a splash of water, so feel free to make it at home!)

It’s also worth noting that the end credits feature some special guest appearances who will make this entire movie truly worth the trip.

This film is more about the investigation into Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) after he saved 155 people by landing his plane on the river. The structure alternates between his struggles with the sudden attention, the inquiry itself and the fateful flight. The flight is staged several times in a very rational manner, never wildly tense but more procedural (not surprising considering director straightforward Clint Eastwood's style). However, the visual effects are stunningly real. While the behind-the-scenes story is fascinating and Hanks maintains his steely resolve, this is more an examination than an experience. The result is a well-acted and often times informative and compelling, albeit straightforward and somewhat uneven-feeling retelling. Like I said, the acting was exceptional. Hanks is as reliable as always, as is Aaron Eckhart by his side. The story itself also provided some interesting insight into the event. However, it also ultimately felt a little rushed, straightforward, and a bit too short, running at only a little over an hour and a half. It also felt as though the retelling was a little disjointed and uneven at times, as it jumped back and forth between the landing incident and real time a bit too much and I felt as though a better balance could've been found. Overall, I certainly wouldn't consider it a perfect or flawless biopic by any means, but it still hits enough marks with Hanks' and Eckhart's performances, as well as the overall intriguing and impressive true story. What's it like?: It's like watching the TV show, Air Crash Investigation, interspread with the dramatisation of the stress that the captain went through as the investigation (into whether he could have avoided landing the plane in the Hudson River) went on for a few weeks.

Pros: I liked how the film presented the story in the form of flashbacks - it had to, else it would have been a very short film or a a film that climaxed at the beginning and went downhill from there - so as to keep us interested in it all the wall.

Cons: I think this could a characteristic of Eastwood's film - the ending is too perfect. In American Sniper, (spoiler) the film showed the titular character shoot dead the main antagonist of the story when, in reality, he didn't. Due to American Sniper, I am just a bit wary whether the actual events in Sully are as protrayed in the film. My gripe here is that the director need to make it that perfect. The story is already great as it is.

Who would think the film is great? Older adults, as they would appreciate the story telling better.
Who would think the film is only so-so? The rest, as it's a drama, not an action film.
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worth it to watch it in the cinemas.

It was amazing how this movie naturally creates a hero vs villain scenario. So many of us don't trust our government agencies anymore as is, and this movie helps solidify our beliefs without even trying. Plus, the fact we know it was based on a true story makes the outcome even more emotional. I wanted to stand up and clap for Sully at the end. When a movie evokes this sort of emotion, I find it truly worth my money. Bravo for Sully. Expand

TheVery well crafted and acted, smart non-linear structure unfortunately suffers from the key inherent problem of it being a sensational true story we all know the ending to, but even more problematic for a Hollywood movie: nobody dies. The story is sorely missing what all drama and comedy, anything must have: conflict. It attempts to manufacture this by way of the insurance/NTSB investigation, but somehow though no doubt true this comes off as phony and highly contrived for effect and filler.
The flashbacks of Sully's earlier flying days are not delved into and wind up pointless. With that kind of thing you can't go just partially into it.
It's a good old fashioned heroic tale yeah, but compared to the superb "Captain Phillips" (10 rating) also with Tom Hanks playing real captain in harrowing true story and the fictional "Flight" (9) which is very, very close story wise in its post flight investigation plot (and in fact its screenwriter was inspired by the miracle on the Hudson to conceive his similar story), this movie does not have nearly the gripping emotional pull of either of those films.

A fan of aviation disaster movies going all the way back to the seminal experience of seeing "Airport 1975" at the movies, I was fully onboard for this and was riveted for the first half. The second half dragged and I was very glad when it ended at a normal running time and not the well over two hours as is the stupid trend for any kind of big or substantive pictures these days.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen, rivaling only Pixels. I honestly thought Sully would lose his pilot's license at the hearing until they added the 35 second thing and it showed in the simulation going back to LaGuardia would be a bridge crash and going to Tudorborough would put the plane into a tenement. That was slightly fun when the chubbyish bald guy from the NTSB was like
"Um.... okay then. Apparently Sully did what he should have."
That's what I got from the look on his face....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Leaves one wanting to understand how much leeway the movie takes from reality. Successfully tackles the problem of getting a 96 minute movie out of a 30 second event, clearly not allowing a minute to of respite for a bathroom break. Left with too many questions, however, regarding a rather black and white approach of the FAA vs Sully dispute - with the FAA coming off as highly incompetent. The reality must have been somewhere in the middle, is it so heroic to do what you are trained for, when you see that you have no other options. Movie does a decent job at polarization for the sake of a pretty good movie, but unlikely for reality. Expand

It is a biographical film that tells the story of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger who manage to deter US Flight 1549 from an impending crash and instead made an emergency landing to the Hudson River. He becomes an overnight hero saving the lives of all 155 passengers and suddenly all eyes are on him. The NTSB and few media outlets don't believe in his decision and a thorough investigation ensues leaving his career on a hanging thread. Sully must prove that his quick move to land on the Hudson was the best choice. Sully is portrayed by Tom Hanks, who is brilliant and every role he plays, he is fully committed. Like last years award winning film, Bridge of Spies, Tom Hanks played a character trying to prove ones worth. In Bridge of Spies, playing James Donovan, he proved that we can't easily judge a person by their nationality and where they came from. In Sully, he prove that humanity is the biggest factor in what makes us human. It is humanity that we can make rational judgement. What makes Hanks performance differ from the two films, is the way he portrays the characters. You believe in the role he plays and that is what makes him an incredible actor. Clint Eastwood did an amazing job directing the film by focusing on the main story and ignored the spectacles, just letting the script come to play. Expand

Dear Tom Hanks,
I first saw you during the documentary about the time you almost landed on the moon during the Apollo 13 space mission, you barely made it back to earth. Years later I saw you try to deliver some packages and get stranded on an island with a cute volleyball, I am so glad you managed to return safely and make a new volleyball friend but it was very dangerous. For your next job you insisted on going onto a train to take little kids to see Santa Claus, which i admire, but the tracks were very slippery so you and the children's safety was very much at risk. Many years went by and I thought you had finally smartened up but then you go on a boat this time and guess what, you go and get yourself kidnapped by Somali pirates. I thought this would have been the final straw for you but this year (only a short time after your Somali incident) i saw a trailer of the news that you flew a plane into the Hudson River to make an emergency landing. I am really worried about you Tom Hanks, please stop taking forms of transportation I dont want to see anymore documentaries about you that make me scared.

Sincerely,
A worried citizen

An excellent bio-pic of the events of Nov. 14, 2014, “Sully” employs the back-story of the hearings by the FAA and the NTSB with both real-life footage and re-enactments of those same events. Director Clint Eastwood weaves an interesting story where one stays focused and involved. Very fine acting by Tom Hanks (Capt. Chesely “Sully” Sullenberger), Aaron Eckhart (as first officer Jeff Skiles), Laura Linney (Lorrie Sullenberger, the pilot’s wife) and a good supporting cast helps immensely to make “Sully” an engaging 96 minutes.
On a brisk Winter’s day of Jan. 15, 2009 at 3:27 PM EST, a US Airways Airbus A320 took off from Newark, NJ headed for Charlotte, NC with 155 souls aboard. The plane had barely lifted off when a flight of Canada geese struck the aircraft and both engines shut down. Unable to return to Newark or land at nearby Teeterborough NJ airport due to low altitude, Capt. Sullenberger made the decision to attempt a water landing in the Hudson River. The rest is history.
Critically acclaimed and a huge box office success, Sully is rated PG-13 for some gritty language, but is certainly appropriate for the 12 years + crowd. In fact, Eastwood places emphasis on the human spirit and courage portrayed by the crew, passengers and first responders.
Currently in theaters, Sully is worth seeking out now or when it is released in DVD, Blue Ray (expected to be in December, 2016) or later on-demand on cable.

The industry is sadly saturated with action-action-action Hollywood films. Sully suffers mildly from post-traumatic stress after he successfully lands his crippled plane in the Hudson River, amazingly saving all 155 of its passengers. After the landing, he is made a hero in the public's eyes, but begins to doubt himself when the aviation panel believes he could have successfully landed the plane in the LaGuardia runway. The story that unfolds is realistic, intelligent, and moving. Do we really need car chase scenes or explosions to hold our interest? A humorous line of the movie was when the hotel maid hugged Sully, and he asked, "What just happened?" The crash was not overplayed, thus, more tragic. The rescue scene was brutally realistic. The aviation panel's witch hunt was ugly and unfounded, and the fact that this story was based on true event made it even more harrowing. What was needed was for people to stand up and salute at the end of the final hearing. Amazing movie. Expand

Sully is by far one of his best films, featuring an exceptional central performance from Tom Hanks, near-perfect pacing, and the most jaw-dropping, realistic and emotionally intenseWhen Clint Eastwood gets it right, he gets it spot-on. Sully is by far one of his best films, featuring an exceptional central performance from Tom Hanks, near-perfect pacing, and the most jaw-dropping, realistic and emotionally intense depiction of a plane crash I’ve ever seen on the big screen, sitting right at the centre of this spectacular film.

First off, I want to talk about Tom Hanks’ performance. Over the last few years, Hanks has gone up yet another level in his acting prowess, taking on some incredibly mature and intense roles in films like Captain Phillips and Bridge Of Spies. Sully, however, might just be his best-ever performance. On the one hand, he’s always as cool and charismatic as the Tom Hanks we all love, however this is one of those great performances where you don’t see the actor on screen.

From the moment the film opens, Hanks disappears into the role, giving this incredibly calm and collected yet incredibly emotional performance as the real-life hero Chesley Sullenberger. By far one of the most likable main characters you’ll ever see, Sully is humble, kind and brilliantly experienced, and the film brilliantly mirrors the feelings of strangers who meet him throughout by making you feel simply honoured to be in his company, something that both Hanks and director Clint Eastwood deserve huge credit for.

Tom Hanks is definitely the main man in this movie, however there are a good few supporting performances too. Most of all, Aaron Eckhart is fantastic as co-pilot Jeff Skiles. Clearly paying great tribute to the real-life hero, Eckhart contently sits on the side with Sully, always maturely playing as a team when the going gets tough after the miraculous water landing, but it’s that that makes him yet another hugely impressive and supportable presence, and his growing role towards the end of the film has a lot more meaning because of that.

The performances are definitely the most consistent part of this movie, but the single thing that I loved most about Sully was the depiction of the water landing. Although split up into two or three flashback sequences (albeit quite long ones), every second of those scenes is truly exceptional.

It’s not just the stunning use of CGI to achieve the recreation of the event, but the way that Clint Eastwood injects so much emotional power and tension into the scene. A plane going down is one of everyone’s worst nightmares, and there’s never been a film where I myself have felt so scared just sitting in my seat. As the tension and uncertainty builds around how the pilots need to act, shivers went down my spine, just heightening the emotional power at every moment.

Even going into this film knowing the outcome of the water landing (given it only happened 7 years ago), I was stunned to see that I was so emotionally invested in that scene. Altogether, that part of Sully is the best half an hour of a movie I’ve spent in ages, and I will undoubtedly remember the feelings of watching that scene for a long time to come.

It’s not all about that one scene, however, as most of the film revolves around the media frenzy and corporate investigation that follows in the immediate aftermath of the crash. With hauntingly evocative images of 9/11 still lingering, the investigation is tense and intriguing, thanks yet again to expert performances, directing and writing. Although the film does take a couple of missteps with a few flashbacks, ineffective emphasis on the moral ambiguity of Sully’s actions, and the surprisingly abrupt ending, there’s a lot more to learn and think about in this movie.

Overall, I loved Sully. It’s not only a film with a powerfully memorable and visually spectacular main sequence, but one with some of the best performances of the year, yet more incredible directing from Clint Eastwood, and some brilliant writing throughout, and one that you won’t forget in a hurry.

Based on the true-life events surrounding the improbable 'Miracle on the Hudson,' Eastwood does a good job of making a story we already think we know interesting. Hanks, for his part, creates a flesh-and-blood character while clearly the film sees Sully as a heroic figure. That they do their jobs well in making a credible film -- even a sometimes suspenseful one -- from a story of which we know the outcome is an accomplishment in itself. Yet the film never quite soars in the way that --say-- "Apollo 13" did twenty years ago. It is a well-made tribute to the efforts of Captain Sullenberger and his crew, a document of a crisis handled well by professional people. It is entertaining and intelligently written, but not a masterpiece. Expand

As ever with these fictionalised versions of real life events opinion differs as to just how accurate it is, and certain elements have certainly be dramatized. That being said, the incredible events of that day in 2009 are always going to make for a compelling movie, and the ever reliable Tom Hanks is as good as ever in the lead role. The movie follows the story of the emergency water landing in Hudson River, as we all know it, focused in the struggle of Captain Sullenberger and his First Officer while facing the proper investigations. The story is short and simple, just what you need to know, little personal life and family drama; although the objective is clear, establish the basis of the human character and the value that has on its own. Similar to the message from Trouble with the Curve, we as society are hypnotized by technology, we worship it. We seek all the answers in google when we don’t understand something, questioning our lawyers, doctors, employees and bosses, and if the internet says something different we assume that the error is the human. Examples like these are many, however, Sully doesn’t discredit technology, it highlights the value as a tool and how it can enrich human life. So the equilibrium is the key, don’t blind yourself to the alternatives. With a long consolidated direction Clint Eastwood once more astonished the audience, Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart did fine jobs, very committed to the part. Expand

In a film such as this, a real life tale of heroism, Clint Eastwood just shoves Sully's life into being a rehash of every inspirational biopic ever made. In the process, the extraordinary becomes typical and loses its power. He tries to change the formula a bit and turns the film into an occasionally flashback look at the Miracle on the Hudson and the impact it had on Chesley Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and all those on-board, but the film just never really sticks the landing. Its real power is found on the plane, but Eastwood seems reluctant to go to the plane at all and instead tells uninteresting side stories.

One of the main culprits in the crash of Sully is the inclusion of the NTSB investigation. Cliched, annoying, and unfair to the NTSB who did not interrogate Sully or make him out to be a villain, these portions of the film are included to add stakes and tension to non-flight scenes. However, they just feel like inclusions from every cliched feel good biopic of the past century. The scenes do not add tension, rather they merely annoy and distract from the true story: the landing of the plane on the Hudson. They do not add greater understanding to the story and merely exist to add the false tension that the film could find on the plane, but refuses to do so for a long stretch. Worse yet, the NTSB investigation is greatly predictable. As it is not true, it is clear it will always come back positive for Sully after he is persecuted for much of the film. Eastwood tries to strike an anti-bureaucracy tone here as they try to tear down this great American hero. Unfortunately, he misses the mark. Throughout the film, we see nothing but evidence he could have made it back and an over-eager Sully taking a nosedive into the Hudson. The way the film paints it, it seems like he wanted to land in the Hudson regardless of the options available to him. By the end, he is cleared and we all celebrate that he has been vindicated, but this does not excuse the scattershot approach to the treatment of Sully's decision or the actions of the NTSB.

The film also tacks on Sully's wife Lorraine (Laura Linney). Watching a talented actress get stuck in a somebody's wife role is always tough, just as it is watching Linney struggle for air in a film that strips her of any role in the film. Randomly popping up to further add pathos and power with Sully's family, the scenes are flat, dull, and useless. Linney tries her best, but the scenes feel scripted and nonsensical. Perhaps they are real, but they never feel authentic and are akin to the flight simulations run throughout the film. The scenes simply miss the mark and do not add emotional depth to the film, especially since it did not need any more stakes or suspense. The scenes are all shown in the aftermath of the accident, so we know Sully survived. Thus, Eastwood is forced into showing delayed reaction on the part of Lorraine or her first seeing it on the news, but even then it lacks the suspense of her not knowing about Sully's safety, since he was the one who told her to see the television. In other words, the scenes are useless.

The only scenes that work are the ones in the plane. Unfortunately, Eastwood even strips these of tension by showing them out of order. The film could have been 24 minutes and 208 seconds long without missing any of the good parts. The only successful parts of this film come as a result of the natural pathos, tension, and thrills aboard this plane that is coming down on the Hudson. Fluff added via the control tower and the guy who thinks the plane crashed, the rescue teams, and otherwise, are unnecessary additions of hero worship or suspense. The plane hitting the birds, them landing the plane, the flight crew preparing the passengers, the passengers telling one another they love each other, the landing, and then the rescue. That is it. That should be the whole film. End credits. Fin. In these scenes, Tom Hanks is in full control and Aaron Eckhart is equally terrific. Eastwood's direction is reserved, relying upon the scene to provide the tension with no artificial additions to try and make it even more suspenseful. The scenes just play out to perfection, but are sadly chopped up and strewn throughout the film. It seems as if Eastwood knew they were the only scenes that worked, so he tried to make it last longer as he built a film from scraps around these top-notch sequences. Unfortunately, the film suffers under this bloat and the excess scenes feel so much worse in comparison to the scenes that do work. In essence, Sully is a film with a great core - the acting and the flight sequences - but it refuses to use them, in favor of peripheral element that suck the life out of the entire picture.

A mixed bag, Sully would be a great short film. As a feature length film, it is not.

A poor imitation of GroundHogs Day. A tiresome movie made by veterans who sleep in Confederate Flag bed sheets. The movie tagline shoulda been "Remember the good ol time... when we knew what service really means. No? Then, GET OFF MY LAWN!"

It's a flashy and realistic adoption of the famous event, that might lack a deeper characteristic inside -- but the film breaks multiple barriers with the stunning accident. All thanks to Tom Hanks and his performance as 'Sully'. We feel his emotional fight -- but the film still lack a greater background to characters and more development. The film just 'is', it needs to 'become' something more than a one man's fight. It's not a film for everybody, because the story can be very slow for some -- but a wow for the aviator (myself). + Great directing, clever editing and a great cast!

To make an arresting movie, which is substantially focused on events after the fact of the incident, is another accomplishment. Now I have something better to celebrate from Clint Eastwood than his bizarro performance with an empty chair at the second to last RNC convention. Once again Tom Hanks brings nuance and heart to the portrayal of a seeming "everyman," who is far and away above that. As he did, btw, in "Captain Phillips." This is probably not the best movie for people who hope that movies always have to mimic the pace of video games to be entertaining. But, occasionally, life is about more than entertainment. Expand

The story of "Sully" may not be an exiting one on paper, but it's take on heroism and false judgment is quite compelling. Tom Hanks & Aaron Eckhart both deliver a powerful performance that was so down to earth. I don't think the movie would've worked without those two. They literally carry this movie and the best scenes come from them.

Clint Eastwood manages to take a basic story and make into something effectively thrilling. Even if I don't agree with everything decision (film making wise) Eastwood made in this movie, but his heart and mind was in the right place.

The movie has it's flaws. Like the 9/11 imagery and dream sequences wasn't really needed. It felt force and kinda thrown in at the least minute, because of how short the movie is. And that's really it for issues.

I think it's worth checking out for Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart outstanding performances, which might be their best.

Clint Eastwood Synthesizes His Ambitions With "Sully"

Great feat or miracle on the Hudson took place on January 15, 2009, in extensive waters (503 km) of the river (national heritage), which serves as the borderline between New York and Jersey City. US Airways Flight 1549 (AWE1549) to Charlotte Airport - CLT (North Carolina); which would go to Seattle Airport (SEA) - SeaTac, took off from New York City exactly at local time 3:11 p.m. EST with 150 passengers and 5 crew members aboard. The huge aircraft ditched safely in the icy waters after a Canada geese flock struck on aircraft engines. Without any relation to terrorism events, the domestic commercial passenger flight was floated near Circle Line at local time 4:00 p.m. EST, where were numerous ferries and tugboats of the NY Waterway, which took part in the rescue. The expertise of the pair of pilots was honored and praised around the globe as "the water landing most successful in the history of aeronautic", a prevented misadventure, which become engraved in mostly American heads forever. Knowledgeable (and retired) airline captain Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger was socially deified—and rightly—for his heroic and unique wonder in Yankee history. It was a matter of time for a dramatization on the big screen was released in worldwide movie theaters, the trouble seemed to be the final amount of material for building a solid narrative (and homage) for the blessed survivors and demanding audience. As Sully argues, the answer is “yes,” although just barely.

With a surprisingly measured budget, keeping in mind that it is director's first motion picture shooted with IMAX cameras in its entirety and there is big visual responsibility, 60 million dollars of production were swiftly recovered—notably, American spectators dominated sale of movie tickets due to it was a shocking event into the country and besides, it is no secret that U.S.A presents the highest commercial demand in the industry—in its first days in movie listings, earning a whopping $26,820,803 DD in its second day of American projections. Although its highest grossing was thanks to Yankees' billfolds, multiplex cinemas beyond its borders providing—still producing money at the box office and it is necessary to deposit the gross from its digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release—a considerable sum of money ($94,000,000 DD), which added with American numbers generate nearly $218,779,510 DD, a resounding success in economic reception. As movie itself, the powerful alliance between Aaron Eckhart & Tom Hanks, crew of writers, Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros. is a simple and reflexive tribute for that brave action, with a usual powerful performance by the main leads, realistic special effects, and a correct direction. This one will portray through the passaging of years what happened exactly on January 15, 2009, and in its later hours.

Based on the autobiographical book "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters", director Eastwood and his team focus more on the nature of the character than in the event itself, even so, this is the major attraction of the full-length film. Rather than presenting events of early 2009 in a chronological order, they decided to employ an anachronistic narrative that relies—in large part—on layered, prolonged, and captivating flashbacks. While it tells the story in three periods interspersed with the reinterpretation of the water landing, which concludes with suffocating (and sometimes laughable) investigation by NTSB.

Tom Hanks as Sully is a fervent proof of the complicated control that the veteran actor has for portraying masterfully to ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and precisely that is what we wished, and for better or for worse, the decision to discern of giving more theatricality to the accident and limit themselves to psychology of characters gave more opportunities to shine.

As I mentioned previously, fragmented (and occasionally repetitive) water landing scenes are the ring of film. Projected from three different perspectives: outside of the passenger airplane, with passengers, and with pilots, their efficacy and efficiency around the reconstruction of events are visually stunning and CGI quality is almost complete. Perhaps, many would prefer giving more prominence to that moment, nevertheless, directors as Eastwood decide to put visual excitement aside to emphasize and delve into the life of their heroes: heroes and tragic facts will always be present in their films.

Simplicity and modesty in "Sully" by Clint Eastwood affect to the motion picture, comparing it with the most iconic works of the director, however, it delivers a correct level of solvency, a spectacular performance by Tom Hanks and an emotional, satisfying and faithful homage for rescued crew members and passengers.

The pacing for this movie is all over the place, there is no smooth transition from scene to scene from dream to flashback to dream and so on. As a result the movie suffers from a lack of build-up and loses some dramatic effect. As for the references to a plane crashing into buildings in New York that was simply unnecessary. Seriously Clint Eastwood if you wanted to make a 9/11 movie then you should have made one. Aside from all that Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart were perfect together, and there are some truly intense moments that really capture "the miracle on the Hudson." Sully is still a tense, emotional, "feel good" drama that suffers from occasional choppiness because of some awkward inter-cut flashbacks. Hanks doesn't star so much as he adds "presence." Eckhart and Linney are excellent, and while the rest of the cast is equally good, they are definitely on the periphery. I'm all for fun, cheesy action movies, but sometimes, a film needs to be made to honor and remember great achievements. Sully does that, simply and without fuss. Expand

The movie also does a terrific job at pulling you in, and there isn't really a single moment where you are disengaged, which is an achievement considering how boring the story sounds on paper, and part of that is due to the phenomonal acting. There are however parts to the film that just feel unneccessary. Chesley's wife, who didn't do or add anything to the movie, and some scenes in general that don't slow down the pacing, but still feel like filler. But my biggest gripe would be the flashbacks to the Hudson River Plane Landing. I think the movie would've been more compelling without them, but my main issue with them is how long they're. Flashbacks should be short, but the flashbacks here, instead take their time. The result is 10-15 minute long flashbacks that disrupt the flow of the movie. When the flashbacks end and we come back to the present, it feels like we've just changed the channel. They negatively affect the structure, making it all feel messy and not like a complete whole. Despite these problems, i still very highly recommend seeing this movie. Overall, i think Sully is a surprisingly very entertaining and fun flick, but it won't leave you wanting more.
Sully is a good-movie gets a 7 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have watched plenty of movies this year. Sully is one of the best. It will stand out for a long time.
I am not a person who gets overly emotional while watching movies. Well, most of the time. But I did have to wipe the one or the other tear surreptitiously away while watching Sully - Miracle on the Hudson.
We all saw the TV footage and we all read the news stories about the US Airways plane that landed on the Hudson River in New York on January 15, 2009. But we were never told the story around the incident, from what went wrong to what happened in the aftermath of the emergency landing.
The captain of US Airways Flight 1549 was being hailed a hero for saving all 155 lives on board the plane. We read the newspaper articles, applauded the captain and then we moved on. At least I did. Until the movie brought that heroic act back to me. It made me think about the people on the plane, about the crew and the passengers.
Who ever took a moment to think of the rescue teams that were out there on that fateful day, helping to get everyone to safety? It was a icy cold January day. Without the help of the coast guard and all the other helpers, people may have died of hypothermia. Yet, thanks to the heroic efforts of every single person out there, everybody made it out alive. All of a sudden all these people were not an article in the newspaper, they were real people. What made them real? Their story. Why? Because it is a very powerful story.

Sully - Miracle on the Hudson tells the events around the emergency landing from the perspective of the pilot, Captain Chesley Sullenberger. The crash is re-enacted as is the rescue operation that ensued afterwards. As a nice touch the rescue crews in the movie are portrayed by the real life heroes who were actually on duty when the plane came down. From the captain of the boat to the frog man who jumped into the water - these guys are the real deal. Its nice to have a face to them.
The movie deals with the emotional trauma that comes from such an experience. Not many people would have stopped to think how this near tragedy affected those onboard afterwards. We are witness to the nightmares and the PST symptoms that the pilot suffered from in the days after the crash. The stress must have been immense.
Also part of the aftermath was the investigation in the crash that followed. Such investigations are a crucial part of the process, as things learned will hopefully aid the prevention of future disasters. The investigator in the movie are portrayed as heartless and cold people, devoid of compassion. They were sent by the corporation to find out why the plane ended up on the Hudson River and not on an airport runway.
I don’t know if this is exactly how it happened or if some Hollywood screen writing liberties were taken with that part. It certainly made for a lot of drama as the movie progressed. The truth lies probably somewhere in the middle.

Tom Hanks was as usual on top of his game with his portrayal of Sully. He is such a great actor. Although, a few times he reminded me of Forest Gump in his mannerism. I don’t know if that intentional; I would not think so but what do I know.
The very strong supporting cast was lead by Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. Both were just incredible.
As a woman and a wife, I really felt for Laura’s character of Lorraine Sullenberger. Her husband had just been in a place crash. He was far away, both physically and emotionally, and there was no way for her to be there. She had no option to see with her own eyes that he was ok, or to hold him. She had to deal with the sudden hype around his person to an extend she was completely unprepared for. The media parked in front of her house, making such noise that conversations inside were almost impossible.
Sully, her husband, was under pressure and fighting his own demons. He was also far away. It is hard to be there for someone if that someone isn’t there. It is also hard to draw strength from someone how isn’t there. She almost lost her husband and the father of her children. She must have been a very strong woman to be able to deal with all of this on her own.
Aaron Eckhart plays first officer Jeffrey Skiles, who copiloted the plane. His outrage and disbelief at the way the investigation was handled will resonate in many who are watching the movie.

Overall Sully - Miracle on the Hudson is an extraordinary and powerful movie. The courage of the captain and his crew are awe inspiring. It is easy to forget that this is a story about real people. The passengers, the crew, the rescue people, the guys in the control centre in the radio tower at the airport. The movie makes them real to the viewer.
Saving 155 lives is a miracle. It was made possible by many people. One of them is Sully.

Sully

Often biographies takes their time, mostly more than 2 hours or so but this one seems to be to the point and not far fetched, hats off to the editor. Sully brews a soft hearted characters through rough series of events which probably is the only reason why you root for the protagonist from the first frame of the movie; that and of course blend in by excellent execution and Tom Hanks. Clint Eastwood as always justifies each and every character and gives them enough space and range (even the passengers) holding the bits and pieces of the movie with the emotion that comes off it. Tom Hanks is as always magnificent in it and is supported strongly by Aaron through out the course of it. Sully's strength is its runtime which is short and to the point but the problem is that the material isn't sufficient for even that amount of time cornering the feature to rely only upon the performance by the actors and the final act of the interrogation which is the highlight of it.

The biggest gripe I have is the total made up NTSB reviews and the supposed drama. My uncle worked for the NTSB and was flown out to NYC the day after to work the case. Most of whats in the movie about the investigation is completely made up. If you read the transcripts of the interviews and panel its technical boring and frankly deferential to the pilots because by then they were international heroes. And it took nearly a year to complete. If you take that and the made up dream sequences out its probably a fairly boring movie because no one died. People came together to work a problem and no one was the bad guy except some geese. Its a feel good movie well acted by Hanks. I wish they had gone more into his background especially all the years of military flying he did and the fact he was working trying to start a saftery company before the accident. The right man at the right time and that should be good enough Expand

This is a good movie by Eastwood. A fully introspective film where the character is followed in a critical and rational way. Good directing and good editing.

I would have given a 10 if it weren't so dramatic on the character side, especially with the choice of actors.
