Don't be too confident this will be successful. The ability to allow gay characters to inspire kids is insignificant, next to the power of the force

Strange World

Strange World details the story of a family of explorers journeying to an unknown world to save a plant that's pivotal to their world.

The visuals shown here are lush and vibrant, and it brings an array of creatures that are different but familiar. The voice acting is also fitting.

Strange World brings a story that features themes of Acceptance, the family unit, representation and environmentalism. Although Strange World is hinged on great themes, the story ultimately becomes stuffed. The characters could have gotten more development, and most resolves in the movie are achieved without effort, making them feel very opportunistic and watered down. The strange world this flick portrays is also not realised properly, as most of these creatures feel lazily sketched.

Strange World may not be one of Disney's best, but it's still enjoyable.

The faces looks to made out of clay and the world itself is bland and uninteresting. The world-building is also bad, and reality itself isn't established enough. So, as I viewer I don't care about the world and the characters. All men in the movie are stupid (of course), silly or cowards. The women are brave, physically strong and based (of course). There is a same-sex relation, that isn't made the centre of the movie, which is good, but still feels as a part of the studio checklist. The movie is not so discrete metaphor for our worlds need for fossil fuel and energy, which destroys the world. I might have laughed once during the movie, that's how not on point the humour is. Otra decepción de Disney, argumento retorcido hasta el extremo para que encajase con el discurso político que han querido incluir. Ecologismo barato, resiliencia, inclusión forzosa de minorías... Dejen de adoctrinar a nuestros hijos.

Before I actually dive into the negatives however, I will say the movie looks visually great just like past Disney films and the performances are pretty good and that's pretty much all the good I have to say. Without diving into spoilers, the main character's son has a certain trait that supposedly makes him unique but the problem I have with this isn't the trait (although I have zero doubt plenty of people will) but more so how this movie doesn't explore that trait as it just feels there and that's pretty much all it goes to the point where the son could pretty much not have this trait and it wouldn't have made a difference since that trait genuanlly did not make that difference for me. Another problem for me is that the stakes pretty much don't make sense since they become firstly introduced early on and we initially don't think much about them but then the movie fasts forward into the future and when you reach the end, instead of thinking, "Wow, I can't believe that plot twist" you're instead thinking "Wait, if those stakes were there in the first place, how have they not already been a much bigger deal so much longer into the future?" it genuanelly becomes impossible to take this movies stakes seriously because if they were a threat, they would've already lost to them a long time ago. Speaking of the plot twist, it would've been a good one if we fast forwarded much LESS into the future since it simply doesn't work with how much time has passed. The movies characters are also hard to take seriously because some side characters are just there and one certain main character is initially just there and is all of a sudden the main villain without realizing it and then they sympathize with the main characters in the end pretty much making me lose all interest in this film. Overall, this movie is pretty much a good looking movie with a unique plot that is simply bad at best and is so much worse when you try to rewatch it and I do not want to see a sequel to this film. I found myself hungry for some of the featured food, but the movie itself gives me a bitter taste. Honestly it could have been grittier, I get they were going for some kind of deep meaning but like most of my home dishes, this movie feels like stuff was just thrown together in hopes it would turn out good.

Largely overlooked, and not that I think this Strange World has anything outstanding to present that people may have missed, but it's hardly the film that many critics said it was.

And it's absolutely understandable that within the Disney brand it feels like a minor work, and while that might be debatable, I also honestly have a hard time saying that this is a bad film.

I reiterate, it may not seem to have the broad appeal of the studio's best animated films, but it is essentially entertaining and, for kids, even better.

At almost every creative stage the original concept became morphed into a series of checkboxes. Yes it looks and sounds nice on my 4k TV / surround system - but I felt nothing for the characters or scenario or the world they created. Has Disney forgotten the basics of how to tell a compelling storyline? It's tiring to see the entertainment behemoth throwing money into a furnace on projects like this when for a fraction of its budget there is a team out there (somewhere safe from the suits and execs) with a real story to tell. The 3/10 is for the artists who worked on this mess. Expand

Out of all the Disney animated movies I've seen this takes the award for the worst.

How this is possible is beyond me, where is the fun, where are the unique animation styles and design, where is the plot, even Frozen 2 a movie which I highly dislike I was able to finish in one session.

Strange world is not a movie this is a checklist of a film, before you say anything like "oh you just don't like the diversity" etc. understand this I don't care about any of that, I want to watch a well-structured, fun inducing, plot mesmerizing animated film, that's all. Firstly I couldn't finish this movie in one session, yes it's boring, the characters are bland, and the world while it looks colourful and the hair and particles look amazing for an animation it is ultimately uninteresting. I would have stuck with the animation style they started with when introducing the film, that would have been impressive and unique.

The story is a basic example of a knock-knock joke, you tell the joke but it sucks all the way through. The pacing of the film is bad. The characters are not generic at all they are just empty. I honestly don't know who this is for, it's like it was meant to not offend anyone in any way, for any reason...wait.

This animated film makes me want to erase the 1h30m I've lost in my life from my mind, how in the hell with the number of writers, animaters, designers, concept designers, quality controllers, producers, executives etc. was this film made and approved? Anyway ratings, deploy:

Visuals: 7/10, yes it is pretty, but not unique. Plot: 3/10, do you like to be bored, I definitely don't.
Characters: 2/10, No Depth, no reason to like them.
Story and Plot: 3/10, there is a story but it sucks hard.
Quality: 1/10, Clearly nothing was done to improve the plot, story, characters, and animation, it's a mess.

Ok Disney I will now tell you exactly what to do, You know the sequels that we've been waiting for a long time. Yeah make them and don't just make them, make them with passion, give it everything you got, the budget, the writing, the story, EVERYTHING. I will even name some of them for you:
ZooTropilis 2
Big Hero 6 Sequal
Treasure Planet 2 (what do you think I forgot about this masterpiece) Ratatouille 2
The Incredibles 3

I would say Good luck, but Disney already has everything. You probably own luck by now, at least use it properly.

I found the living planet, bonding with dad, accepting your son, and get along with your environment tropes unbearable. And sorry guys, there are monsters and villains and killing them is fun and exciting. The story kind of sucks, the plot is convoluted and over the head of any younger children and it is so sappy. It does not help that I recognized the sources for the ideas like “Journey to the Center of Earth” and “Fantastic Voyage” which are better. Also the character developments, a lot of twists and outcomes are foreseeable. I would describe Strange World as adventure and family movie with focus on political correctness and diversity. If this is a good or bad thing I will not specify as I will get hate either way. The story is set in a country of Avalonia which is surrounded by incredible high mountains which no one ever manged to cross to see what is behind. Jaeger Clade is a famous adventurer who wants to find a way through the mountains with friends and his teenage son names Searcher. However after finding a strange plant that radiates energy a fallout happened and Jaeger continues while his son and rest of the team return home. Approx 25 years later the plant changed the society but Jaeger never returned. I stop here to avoid spoilers but you should already make assumptions what will happen. While I liked the story and characters a lot is so predictable and foreseen from miles away. I was not that much invested because of this and the immersion could be higher. Again I repeat it is not garbage but the sources for the ideas were better. This might drag down my rating a bit. The characters aka voice actors were really good and I praise the whole cast. There is no misstep in the whole movie. Animation wist it is a beautiful and colorful movie. If the rest was as good as the animations and voice actors this would be a hit. Overall I think it is a 5/10. I see this as a potential hit with a better story approach. In this state it is too generic for my taste of movies. Compare it to the gold standards of the last years like “Zootopia” or “Inside Out” to recognize the differences. Expand

The world itself is very vibrant and the creature designs are lovable yet creepy. However, it doesn't matter how good it looks if the story itself is mediocre. Unfortunately, Strange World has a bland and forgettable story that has a meaningful message with poor execution. It doesn't help that the characters aren't super memorable or even likeable at times. Ethan (the grandson) is such an annoying character who does dumb reckless things yet is never punished in any way for his choices. It's ridiculous as other characters who are flawed, learn from it and grow to be better. Ethan never learns anything and is just rewarded for being an absolute nuisance!

Kids might like this but it's definitely not going to be remembered. What a let down...

Very disappointing to be honest, I was looking forward to this given the pulp serial theme and advertising and there ARE some nice ideas here struggling to shine though the quagmire of nonsensical (and actively contradictory) BS.
The acting is pretty good however, even if the script isn't. The main family has decent characterisation, but given how short the runtime is it would be nice to have seen a little more character depth to the ancillary team instead we get another case of "here's a character we introduce.... 5 mins before killing them off because one of our main characters can do it better" and that's the main problem with this movie as while it looks lush (and it really does) it's not got much more going on then a script written by trawling TV Tropes.

It may be that fear of the reviewer’s young ones seeing something that they don’t approve of is leading to lower review scores. That’s okay. At some point their young ones won’t be young anymore and will have to deal with situations and difficulties that this movie presented. In all it doesn’t peach anything and has a strong sense of what is right in terms of killing things that you have dominion over. It shows the expense that struggling over energy resources can take on your environment when you are only focusing on how you want to live your life no matter how wasteful your energy consumption can be. It is very whimsical, thrilling and sci-if/fantasy packed. I love how original it is. The characters are somewhat one dimensional, but overall they suit the story. It’s not perfect, but I think that there is something fun and enjoyable from the excellent performances given by the cast. A lot of the humor falls flat, but if you like sci-if I’d recommend giving this a shot. Expand

The tale was good, and I mostly bought into it; as always, it was wonderful to have diverse cultural representation. I would not classify it as a classic, but some of the characters and soundtrack did strongly remind me of Star Wars. Will undoubtedly irritate individuals and occasionally referred to as boring. The animation itself, in my opinion, is entertaining. They did make a decent, if not amazing, movie in the form of Strange World. I don't think this will have a sequel, and I don't think it will end up being a Disney classic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm watching many films with my kids, so I am used to the most cheesy kid films (most are bad, by adult standards). Strange World. My daughter asked if Strange World was made by the Avatar creator... And I guess that this is its biggest weakness: The story is not unique enough, too much "Pando" with Pandorian tropes in it. Also, the main story between the son and the father... Am I suppose to tell my kids that being a farmer is as exciting as being an explorer and scientist? And that the father is bad because he was captured underground for 25 years? The latter surprised me in particular on how selfish and ignorant the son was. One would imagine if your (however difficult) father disappears for 25 years, that you would search for him (which he didn't), at least worry about him (which apparently, was not a topic at all), and then when you find him and he tells you that he was kept underground that the father would be at least disappointed that the son gave up on him, like all of us. Yet, in this film... The father is bad, and it is the father's fault that the son did not find the courage or interest to search for him, in 25 years? Disney, please. Not okay. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

There's a lot I disliked about this movie, but - overall - I actually liked it.

CONS
1. The kid is annoying. Not because he's gay. He'd be equally annoying if he was straight. He's just annoying. Think the teenage John Conner in T2, only a total misfire. The way he is animated is annoying. His voice is annoying... but I knew all that from the trailer.

2. The grandfather is one dimensional and totally forgettable.

3. They try way too hard to be "diverse" with the characters. The main character is an openly gay biracial teenager with a three legged dog and the president of the world is a Native American woman with beads in her hair. I'm not anti-diversity, it just seems to be progressing from exhausting to absurd now.

4. I feel like I've seen Splat a bunch of times before. Like they've just taken a bunch of other Disney characters and removed all recognizable features leaving just the blueprint. I have long since learnt to look past the comic relief characters in these films. They're almost always awful. Splat isn't awful, but it doesn't have much room for personality either... so, I guess it's hard to get it wrong? I don't know. It's not much of a character.

5. The gay thing felt a little creepy somehow. I like aspects of what they did. I like that the grandfather (who a tough guy) doesn't even hesitate when he finds out his grandson is gay. Not sure I've ever seen that in a film, let alone a Disney cartoon... but I didn't like the totally unnecessary scene with the gay teen romance. The haircut of the kid he loves is cringe enough on it's own.

PROS
1. This film is less likely to kill you if you're epileptic. Too much children's animation these days is over-stimulating. Strange World has enough space to breather. You might say it has inner space.

2. The world building is good enough - alone - to justify the ticket price. I love creatures and weird alien planets, so this is right up my alley. I got a sense of childlike wonder watching it and I'm usually pretty jaded to that sort of stuff. It's not earth shattering or anything, but it's all very well done.

3. Love the ending. Dennis Quaid goes back in after 35 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was written with the sole purpose to stuff as many far-left and radical concepts into one film as possible, for consumption by children. The story line was secondary. I never thought I would have to research a kids' movie before taking my kids, but I should have apparently. First there is the obvious always-in-your-face LGBTQ agenda, replete with the even more Blatant de-masculinization of boys and de-feminization of women. Worse even than in Red Panda, but at least there was no twerking this time. The attempted normalization of it all - you really want me to believe Grandpa was ok with this? Please. Oh, and who could miss the blatant CRT vibe. Then there was the eco-terrorism aspect complete with energy scarcity, food scarcity, and anti-farming. Fear porn isn't just for MSM anymore, folks. Honestly though, I was surprised they didn't have the characters eating bugs in this movie, just sayin'. Missed opportunity for sure. Then throw in the perceived necessity to tamper with the innate immune system, a little cameo roll for fake science. Top it off with a dash of flat earth theory, for giggles. Parents, it is far time we boycott Disney. The lunatics have taken over the asylum, and there's no going back. Attempting to normalize what is not normal, is not normal. Neither is bowing down to it, under the guise of "inclusivity" and "tolerance". Wake up and take a stand, parents. This is a battle for your child's mind. Go back to purer and simpler times, people were happier then. We don't need this nonsense anymore. Expand

How did this pass quality control at Disney?
Kids will be bored. Every kid in the theatre was bored and talking over the movie.
The only thing this film will challenge is your patience. The movie seeks to demonstrate that a story can work without conflict or villains, and that perhaps we must overcome ourselves to find deeper meaning. I'll get to this.

The inclusivity messaging (which I have no problem with) is all consuming at the expense of any depth. The characters were designed - seemingly clinically - to be diverse and inclusive to perfection, but the film fails to assign any significance or struggle specific to their identity. They are merely set dressing and either a token attempt at representation or a pathetically shallow one. Everyone just gets along fine, which is ironically enough, a classic trope in the sitcoms of post war America where everything was hunky dory.

The reason I found this to be ironic is it seeks to overturn and poke fun at tropes such as the need for villains, conflict, and masculine protagonists as storytelling devices from classic movies that the majority of the adult audience remember fondly from their own childhood. However it lacks both the emotional clout and the intellectual depth to achieve anything except bore young audiences. It fails to offer an effective motivation for the plot despite eschewing traditional storytelling. Nothing is challenged, and the deeper message is abnormally shallow and weak even for a children's film. Wall E achieved a similar message with far more emotional impact and entertainment value and the main characters weren't even gendered in a conventional sense.

Carries on the new attempts by Disney to be more inclusive and add natural diversity by matter-of-factly including a gay teen lead. Way to go Disney. I completely support this new, more realistic representation of the world. The problem is that the main story of the "strange world" is partially a recycled story from a 60's sci-fi movie (too spoiler-y to reveal here) and this connection causes the "big twist" at the end to be immediately obvious about 10 minutes in. If you haven't seen that 60's movie, you'll probably think the big twist was brilliant, but for me it was a big disappointment to see the "truth" about the world much too early. Great voice casting and animation. Good side-story about parents learning to let kids be whoever they are. Expand
